Windows 7 and readyBoost

I'm thinking of picking up a flash drive (like 16-32 gb in size) to use readyBoost - but I was wondering if it actually helps at all for gaming ?

To be quite honest, from my personal experience...

No.

What are your specs as of now?

ReadyBoost simply provide a read cache for your hard drive and when you are running on a platform with a small amount of actual system memory (512MB) and/or an old slow hard drive (5400 RPM or slower ie laptops) and a fast USB flash drive.

However once you have 1GB or more of system memory, there is almost no measurable improvement.

That sums it up nicely.

Basically it was a quick and dirty solution to the high system requirements for Vista. The assumption being is every Tom, suit and Grandma can plug a USB drive into their computer and get Vista running less like a dog.

well my specs so far are: an i5 eg750 2.66 ghz with 4 gigs of ram, a gigabyte geforce 260 gtx with 896 mb ram, 650 watt power supply. I have yet to pick up a HD setup but the plan is to use 2 HDs at some size 250-500 gb each one as a boot drive one one as a data drive.

I was wondering if I should use readyBoost or upgrade to 8 gigs of ram, but I figured RB would be cheaper by far.

In all honesty, given your current specs, you wouldn't notice a big difference either way.

But if you REALLY wish to spend money, go with the extra RAM. It's a better choice in both long run and short run.

If I were you, I'd spend the extra money on extra storage, or dual monitors!!!

I'm not much of a storage hog - I'm doing fine on an 80 gig HD with like 15 gigs left after 5 years of throwing stuff on it.

Well then I'd suggest keeping that extra money, saving it, and buying something more worthwhile later on to enhance your PC-usage experience.

Forget ReadyBoost as your target system specs would pretty much render it useless. As mentioned in an earlier post, ReadyBoost was concocted by Microsoft to offer some help to those who migrated from anemic XP boxes to Vista. ReadyBoost had its own set of problems and I am happy that it is being relegated to history. More memory and faster drives are now the norm... especially at their low price points.

That would be girlfriend/wife/boyfriend/husband/thing from outer space.

Yes, it certainly *does* enhance your PC usage experience to make them not feel neglected. As well as other things.
