  1. I don't *think* there is a way right now. Don't recall if mention of breaking it down was "something coming" or just a suggestion.

I really shouldn't get into this argument....

No, none of them lack the ability to solo. The person making this (flawed) description isn't satisfied with the speed at which they do so. Going through what they said:

    Quote:
    and low hitpoints/survivability.
    Starting with this.

Low hit points - Yes, defenders have low hit points. Nobody will argue this. They also have a wide variety of tools at their disposal to avoid losing those hit points, and/or recover them quickly.

Low hit points, however, is NOT the same as low survivability. Do they have armor? Not as in tank/stalker/scrapper/brute armor, no. However, they do have a wide variety of tools to help them stay alive, from boosting their regen rate, to actual defense (in more than just force field) or resistance, to stealth, to lowering the enemy's tohit or damage resistance, to direct holds, knockdown/back powers and pets.

And that ignores the debuffs in the secondary attack powers.

When a defender - *pre IOs* - can tank (D3,) they do not have "low survivability." They have less of a margin when things go very wrong due to the lower hitpoints, yes... but low survivability, I'd argue with.

    Quote:
    lack of status protection
    As mentioned, breakfrees.

That aside, some sets DO offer status protection (FF, Sonic) to the Defender. Others - well, if they can't hit you, they can't mez you. Plus, you do have other tools (available to all ATs) in the power pools - from some defense from Hover or Combat Jumping (also providing immob protection) to a degree of actual mez protection in the form of Acrobatics.

This, as most of my replies, ignores IOs completely - which, given they're seen as a completely legitimate "answer" for other ATs, should not be dismissed here for providing extra defense (to not get mezzed in the first place) to resistance to mez effects - as well as your other complaints, higher HP and higher damage.

    Quote:
    low damage
You may have missed the change to Vigilance recently. When solo, the Defender gains more global damage (30%.) When teamed, that starts going down... but you've got teammates contributing there, as well.

In addition, you have powers that let you hit more often (-def,) harder (-res, +dmg,) and more accurately in most sets, both primary and secondary. The most obvious one (to me) is Sonic. If you roll a Sonic/Sonic, for instance, you get:

    - Status Protection (Sonic Dispersion, providing resistance to *all* damage as well as holds and immobilizes,)

    - Means of reducing incoming damage, both directly, again, with sonic dispersion as well as semi-indirectly using the the KB/KD of Liquefy and Shockwave, the sleep of Siren's Song, and disorient of Screech, and Sonic cage.)

    - Means of increasing your OWN damage. Every attack does a -res to the enemy, and they stack. Just watch Scream - you'll usually see you're doing higher damage halfway through (say, making up numbers, 17 17 17 17 18 18 18 18) JUST on its own. Even without sonic *attack,* the very first power a Sonic resonance user can get is Sonic Siphon, a -res power. (And Liquefy does -def, as well.)

Add to that the better numbers a Defender gets from leadership (go ahead, take Assault) and I really dont' see the complaint. Is anyone going to confuse you for a Scrapper? No. But you're not doing unnoticable damage.
  3. Biting down the "What, you want an AE change? Ha!" which is more borne of disillusionment...

Yeah, I wouldn't mind seeing it. Or LL's suggestion. I could see a lot of use for either one.
  4. Great reason to leave. Congrats, and may the little one be born healthy and happy.
  5. Eh, I don't know. It's directed at bugs (and yeah, the SG base being "in a mission" - or missions saying "supergroup base!") I'd say qualify as bugs.

If he were looking at adjustments, adding/changing functionality, a new UI, that sort of thing, then it'd be S&I. (Though that last paragraph does do that, most of it is "Why is this still broken?" Which is a legitimate question.)

Nothing in the one you mentioned, or any of the others, is designed to be insulting. There's a little tongue in cheek (such as the "We are Spartacus!" "No, you're now generic supergroup #089475927!") meant to help get the points across.

Insulting would be, oh... gohan-whatever-the-number saying "People that have any medical issues with power effects should just GTFO." Or "You don't like the iTrials, you're obviously an antisocial loner who doesn't want to have to work for anything." Or "Sonic bubbles (old ones) don't cause problems, everyone who complains is a whining, lying hypochondriac who just wants attention." All of which have been pointed at people on the forum.

Giving a list of reasons that come up each and every time with a dead horse discussion? That's not insulting. And if you think it is, perhaps you should work on learning how to read and work with criticism. (And just so you don't read that wrong, that is "Learn to read criticism" and "Learn to work with criticism," not "You need to learn to read.") Every single point in there is directed at the ideas, not the poster. The closest thing to ANYTHING getting pointed at the poster is contrasts - IE, "YOU may like playing on Freedom. I don't."

    Do you call that insulting?

Here, go ahead and read through it again:

Why server consolidation is not a good idea.

Welcome to the forum. You have posted one of the oft repeated suggestions, "Consolidate the servers."

    Disclaimer

Yes. This is a cut and paste reply that I keep handy. It isn't meant to cause fights or to be insulting.

The body of the cut and paste reply is the way it is because we've seen these arguments numerous times before. They're a summary of the salient points that come up each time. They are not here to insult you, make you feel stupid or otherwise "bring you down a peg." Instead, they are meant as instruction and information. Please read through the points and the explanation behind them to see the issues that are commonly brought up in response. They may not always match your suggestion 100% - in fact, you may have explained around one or two of them - but they're there for consideration and refinement of your idea.

Yes, I do look forward to the time, with some of these suggestions, that someone not only addresses all the points, but does so exceptionally well. It'll probably be added to the end of the cut/paste reply, with credit. For now, though, read and consider the points. They really are just there to help you, and move discussion along to help ideas evolve.

If you're going to see this and say an "evil forum vet is just shooting down your idea," or "You think you're the last word because of your post count," you're wrong. Heck, if you say the second, you've just worried more about my post count than I have in the last four plus years. Tongue-in-cheek comments in here are meant as hummor, not put downs.

    TL,DR section.
First, my stock answer, one which I stand by and repeat with all due fervor. HELL NO.

    Now, why:
    1. Just because YOU like living in New York City doesn't mean I can't like Kansas.

Yay, you love having huge lag spikes as you get near the black market/wentworths and a busy broadcast. Congrats. Enjoy Freedom. Some of us - many of which you will get replies from with this subject - like *low population* servers. If we *wanted* to be on Freedom, we'd *be* on Freedom.

I have characters on Freedom. I rarely play them (and actually moved a character OFF of Freedom to finish leveling it to 50) because *I DON'T LIKE FREEDOM.* I dislike the banality of broadcast, the high percentage of *horrid* teams I've come across there, the lag around any gathering point- and I've got a decent connection and system. For much the same reason, I typically startin Galaxy City instead of Atlas Park - I don't *want* to log in to a costume contest with several 50s spamming powers and nonsense arguments in broadcast.

Some of us *like* nice, quiet servers.

    2, Kansas, part 2.

In addition, servers have their own personalities. No, I don't mean that literally, there's no AI to worry about if you start hearing "Daisy, Daisy" over your speakers or headset. Freedom's a crowded mess. Virtue is the RP server. Pinnacle is the "Drunk" server. Others have specific communities, such as those from Australia/NZ, Europe, etc.

    3. "I only saw one other person. World of Conancraft has eleventy billion!"

    So what?

We don't run around camping spawn points in this game. People are in missions. People are spread across many zones. Search on a map or do a /whoall and you'll miss those in missions, as well as those who are, for whatever reason, on /hide. Your "search" there didn't give you a full picture, not in the least.

I understand the "feel" of things being "not very populated," but take a good look around when you're in game. Typically, you don't really have a lot of visibility. Standing in steel canyon, there could be multiple, full 8 person groups surrounding you, and it's likely you'd never see them. We have buildings, walls, architecture, trees and more limiting our visibility. Yes, it can make you feel more alone... but that's rarely the case. Add to that that the population is spread between many, MANY zones, most quite large, and among two sides... well...

    4. "I put up my LFT flag and nothing happened!"

Learn to search. Don't just wait. Form a team yourself.

    5. "I AM SPARTACUS!" No, not any more.

Remember logging in and seeing all those slots? Everyone has those - some buy more than the base 12, you get an extra one each year, you could have a total of 36 on any server. Everyone does. Every one has a character with a unique name. Maybe not a *good* name, but a unique one. Every one has a character with a unique name. Maybe not a *good* name, but a unique one.

Now merge servers. Suddenly, CoolBlasterDude from server 1 is getting merged with CoolBlasterDude from Server 2. Who gets to keep their name? Nobody has been able to answer this with any degree of satisfaction. Add a number? But I am NOT CoolBlasterGuy1. And what if the name's too long? Does the older character keep it? What if they're not as active?

People are *VERY* attached to their names. They are, quite obviously, part of their character.

    6. "This Is SPARTA!" Sorry, Sparta exists already. You are GenericSG 8734 287 9798.

What else has a name? Supergroups. And I can *guarandamntee* that the same name is in use on multiple servers. Sometimes it's 'branches' of the same SG, sometimes it's coincidence. But with *everything* involved in an SG - from its identity and reputation on the server, to everything stored in the database about what it owns, what its base is like and such, this would be a disaster in the making. And no, auto merging them when the servers merge, even if they have room to, is not an option.

This, of course, assumes that they *CAN* move supergroups as a unit. More than likely, it'd just be a mass character move, with bases, prestige, anything stored in bases and all SG affiliations just gone forever.

    7. "I am... where'd Spartacus go?"

Remember all those slots? Well, you start with 1/3 of the available ones. You can buy up to 36 total (24 on top of the ones you get initially.) Now, what do you suppose would happen if you merged two servers, and someone has, say, 20 characters on each? Not unusual. In fact, before those extra slots, I had *filled up* several servers. Do those characters just disappear? Do they move? Free move to another server sounds great, right... well, except you now kick them from their supergroup, remove them from their friends lists and more. This makes for angry and unhappy customers. Or rather, ex customers.

    8. I will play where I damn well want to. And you can too.

And that should be blunt enough. If I want a crowded server, I'll go to Freedom. If I want an RP server, I'll go to Virtue. I do NOT want to be shoved onto another server I *don't* like. If I wanted to go there, *I'd be there.*

If the server you're on isn't "busy" enough for you, you have two options that won't bother anyone else.
    (A) If it's low enough, reroll. You have a ton of character slots for a reason.
    (B) If you don't want to reroll, server transfers are available, and relatively cheap. They also finish fast - you should be up and running and being spammed to join someone's SG on the new server in a few minutes, in most instances. So YOU can go to the server of YOUR choice without screwing ME over.

    9. "It'll free up server hardware for Freedom!" No, no it won't.

Freedom, because of the load it tends to have, already has more resources dedicated to it than other servers. And ALL of the servers have been upgraded multiple times. The servers are not allocated exactly the same. The servers that handle less of a load have less dedicated to them. So this argument doesn't fly.

    10. DOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOM!

Last but not least (at least until better points come along to be added,) server consolidation is widely viewed in the industry as an MMO going on life support. No, we don't have WoWs numbers (and you should actually pay attention to when and how they got those.) They're an abberation in the MMO industry. COH has had and does have a very successful, sustainable population even at its lowest points, so there's no economic need to combine anything. The flip side of that, of course, has been suggested above - you crowd people together, break up their SGs and friends lists, cause characters to go missing and poeple definitely *will* quit, both out of annoyance and a sense of "The game is almost dead!"

    In conclusion....

As stated before, when it comes to server consolidation... HELL NO.
Now. Your turn. Point out the insults. Disagreement is not insulting. We'll wait. (And I invite anyone else who thinks any part of that is insulting to point it out, as well.)

Oh, by the way, if you want insults - look at your own post:
    Quote:
Fact is, people who post a lot do so because they haven't anything better to do. A rule of thumb that has never failed me on any internet forums is that anyone with 1,000 posts or above shouldn't be trusted too much to be representative of the community or sensible in his posting, and the more posts the more likely is that person to care way too much about his online persona and to bring his own agenda in every topic.
Three insults in one paragraph... against people you know nothing about. You do know the saying about glass houses, yes?

Know why I post so much?
    1. I have experience with the game and enjoy helping people out.

Some of my friends end up shaking their heads at me because I finish work (tech support) where I'm helping people out all day. I then log onto the game and help out in the "Help" channel, and/or have the forums open (sometimes while at work - working from home has benefits) and try to answer questions. Do I get into arguments? Yep. Do I also help out? Yep.

    2. I enjoy the game.

I've played the game since february 2005, without a break. Sometimes I play more, sometimes I play less. I have nearly 300 alts, I've probably rolled every powerset at least once. I am personally invested in this game, making suggestions, commenting, getting into discussions (sometimes heated) over what would be/is good or not - whether by preference or actually *good* or *bad* for the game. Obviously I have to argue from my POV.

    3. I bring up problems.

Just look up the "problems with incarnate power" thread - which has led to a coming fix, thanks to Tunnel Rat seeing it (and which may have wider reaching effects, as really, it touches on customization.) Do the powers affect me? Nope. But because I know full well they hurt others - physically, in this case - I'll bring it up and fight for it.

    4. I have fun.

I've got my share of smartalec comments on the boards. I take part in things like the Photoshop Tennis bit that's going on (stalled at the moment,) and share artwork I've commissioned or otherwise recieved, sometimes sharing writing and the like too. It's a part of enjoying the game.

Does any of this mean I think I'm the only one to do that, or the only one with anything to say that's worthwhile, or the only one that the devs should listen to, or any of the other nonsense that gets thrown at me (or others, generally with "because of your high post count!" thrown in?) Nope. But it doesn't mean I'm not going to say it.

And, unlike you, I take post count for exactly what it's worth when looking at how valid (or not) input is. Nothing at all.

Should we not read authors who have put out a lot of books? Should we ignore scientists who have published multiple papers (such as the late R. Feynman) because they - in terms of their specialty - "post a lot?" Should we ignore what the person who's worked at the company 20 years has to say because they've written a lot of email and done a lot?

    Sounds silly, doesn't it.

  8. yeah, tend to kill some on the way in, clear the doorway, kill what starts coming at me, and start proactively killing groups about halfway through - depending on character.

Really, it's mostly a challenge for "How close can I get to 0 escapes" (which I've done a few times) now for me.

Odd that you say that and then pick and choose your own definition, too. "Grinding levels" for 7 years? Badges and some of the unlockables fit what people would consider "grind," I agree - doing the exact same thing over and over. But if you want to throw that out to "All you do is kill mobs, you grind levels!" well, you're being ridiculous.

Why do people call the Incarnate system (post-Alpha) a grind? Because they *must* do the same 2 (soon three, oooohhhh...) trials over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over again. They have no choice. If they go and decide, hey, I want to run X arc in Ouroboros? No progress toward the Incarnate system. If they want to help a friend take down an AV? No progress.

The Alpha system was non-grind. You have a variety of activities - no, 2-3 is not "variety" - to gather shards and create your alpha ability, and upgrade it. You have a variety of task forces, that change each week, to get "notices," and can still earn components. That's a decent system. Having to run the same thing over and over again, to where you can sleep through not just the encounter but the same comments about the cutscenes because you memorized them 50000 runs ago... that's not so decent.

(And I'm saying this as someone who's *not* running them repeatedly or exclusively - hell, I've had no urge to run them in at least a week and a half, quite honestly probably over two weeks. And I still don't want to go back to the same... two... trials to try to get *any* of my 50s either started or advanced.)
  13. It works fine. You'll get pestered by UAC on occasion ("Are you sure you want this program to run?") but otherwise, generally no problems.

(Running since the win7 beta here.)

Depends on what you mean by "move to the cloud?" I can play it, rather poorly, on an airplane now. (ba-dum.)

COH already "lives" there. We use a client and store *very* little data locally (configuration, screenshots/logs,) while all the stuff that makes COH COH goes on on a server somewhere else. The only way to make it more of a "cloudy" game would be to access it through a web browser... and personally, I think that would suck so badly it'd not just put Hoover out of business, but suck back through time so they never got started.

"The cloud" isn't going away - but neither is it new. You use email, right? You've seen webmail? Hell, we can probably point all the way back to dumb terminals time-sharing somewhere as "having used the cybermesozoic Cloud." But there's no way I'm living there - no Chromebooks for me, thanks, unless they can access the data I'm storing *locally* for when (not if) the 'net goes down, for instance.

Taking into account all the suggestions that have already been made, how can Cosmic Balance be changed to benefit us solo without making Kheldians OP on teams?
If we're focusing solely on that.. then focus on what's been done with inherents (and related) in the past.

Domination - the most obvious. Damage buff given to all powers (and powers rebalanced) without regard to Domination itself. The reason? Previous "Jeckyll and Hyde" gameplay needing fixing.

Assassination - Maybe not quite so obvious, and this is more than just the inherent, really. It's rather extensive, as Stalkers are more an entire "system."
    1. Hide's END cost reduced. It's such an essential power for the Stalker that having an END cost was unfairly punitive.
    2. Damage buff if teammates are in *close* (30ft?) range.
    3. Chance for AOE fear on successful AS.
    4. Not breaking hide for a missed AS.

There can be a bit of argument there on just what fell into the inherent versus just rebalancing, though. At the very least, 2 and 3. They already had a chance to crit while hidden *and* on held targets.

Vigilance - ever-infamous, from "not having one" to "useless solo, encouraging letting yoru team get hurt for an END discount" (which I don't really *agree* with but can see the point of,) to "30% damage buff solo decreasing as people are added."

Defiance - went from "Die for a damage boost" (which didn't help blaster survivability) to "Some attacks while mezzed, and pseudo-Fury damage buff from prior attacks."

Brutes - Slower fury build, slower fury decay.

    What hasn't been changed?
Tanks - Gauntlet. (perhaps minor tweaks. No, I'm not throwing the taunt -range or T1attack -res in here - power vs inherent.)

    Masterminds - Bodyguard.

Controllers - Containment giving a damage boost.

    Scrappers - crits

    Corruptors - Scourge

    VEATs.

So, what's the problem with CB?
    - Doesn't help solo. Really, that's what it boils down to - we must be teamed to *have* an inherent, essentially.

I don't agree that "It doesn't give anything back to the team" is a valid point. Conditioning, crits, etc. don't, either. That's more a powers issue (in which case, PBs have some team-oriented powers.)

Can we just take the damage out and apply it directly to the powers? It's straightforward, yes, but...

... what do we do with the rest of this?

Simplicity might say replace the damage with, say, defense. Alternately, handle two things - up the damage resistance we have inherently, replace it with defense, and where we have damage now, give a recharge buff.

Is just bumping up damage enough to "fix" (my position on "brokenness" should be rather well known by now, so I'll leave it in quotes) PBs and the inherent? Is that enough for soloability? Should we consider "Start forms with two slots per power" part of the inherent? (I'd say not, really, as it is a separate issue - but would it balance out part of the PB complaints?)
  16. Yeah, I do mean ancient.

Just re-ran one of mine - Tsoo Faced, arc 1120 (no, no numbers missing from that) - to see if anything had broken lately. Fortunately, no - the arc was rather simple to begin with. (And also buried early.)

Mostly looking for suggestions/ways to liven it up a bit without making it overly gimmicky or anything. Re-running it after a good space of time, I don't think it's really presenting the story as well as I'd hoped (or making it quite as obvious.)

And if you had the gall to do anything that you thought was helpful, people would get mad, chastise you to just wait by the entrance, even kick you from the team.

I actually left the game for two or three months in 2005 precisely because I wasn't doing anything and the thought of rolling a burn tanker just to play was nauseating. Had they not fixed the issue like they did, I would be permanently gone. As much as that might please some people, everyone else would have too and there would be no City of Heroes today.

Retro-hate Statesman all you want, but Enhancement Diversification was a very good thing for this game.
Eh... dealing with two different things here.

Yes, ED was good for the game. I remember quite a bit of "stand around, do nothign while the tank herds, then the blasters decide who gets to nuke everything on this floor." Very bad for long term health.

But the complaints about States... yeah, legit. He did *technically* tell the truth about it - but he really lawyered it, so to speak (going by the letter instead of the spirit of what he said.) "We won't make any more drastic changes to powers like GDN." What did we get next? ED. No, the powers themselves didn't change... but it was a wholesale change to the way they were slotted - and worked afterward. If anything cemented the image of Jack as dishonest, it was that.

(And, honestly, I'm sitting here watching us grow more powerful in game and wondering when the hammer's going to fall for us being "too powerful" again - the devs have *admitted* some of the things we've done have caught them by surprise... like softcapped blasters.)
  18. One other point (which may have been covered in the skimming) - there's very little here that requires a team, so auto-teaming isn't really as big a deal.

For comparison - GW does have stuff that requires multiple people... but gives you NPC henchmen to use, as well. Aion? Darn well BETTER have a team for a good chunk of the game, even the non PVP stuff. Here? You can walk through spawns with relative ease, adjust the size and difficulty as you like. Here, if I say "I'd better just pull this one guy, I'm going to be working on him for several minutes and don't want interference," I'm talking about a GM or AV, quite possibly. Elsewhere, that's one mob - more than 2v1 (with you being the 1) is rare, if not suicidal, in many games.

Here, teaming's a "why not" for most things. Elsewhere, teaming's a "you really had better, unless you really like donating to the hospital/soul healer/doing corpse runs."

Pistols looks adaptive which is neat.
Demon Summoning looks fun, but I'll have to discern what the demons do.
Electric Control also seems pretty meh.

I could easily be wrong about those, I obviously haven't played any of them. Enlighten me
Kinetic Melee - It "feels" slow to me in the beginning. (Which, given the nascar sound effects...) THe numbers folks say it isn't any more so than other sets, and I do have one in the mid-game, plus it has a few interesting mechanics.

Pistols - Swap Ammo is an interesting mechanic.

Demons - People complain about them making noise all the time. THey do. It's also probably the only MM primary I've heard people say "What do you mean you skipped the attacks? Go back and take them!" They look cool *and* have a good (-res) effect.

Electric Control - is incredible. Maybe some of the descriptions (like the "sleep patch") have you going meh, I don't know, but it's one set I'm having trouble finding anything to skip on. It's a really good control set (IMHO.)
  21. Since not everyone reads the beta boards (open though they are,) Tunnel Rat recently posted this:

Just dropping in to let you know that changes to the Barrier FX, specifically in response to complaints of migraines, will be coming shortly after the Keyes Island launch on the live servers. The “jitteriness” of the continuing effect has been reduced, as well as the initial flash of the original activation effect. Any quick, strong pulse in the effect has also been reduced. Much thanks to the players who described the problematic visual triggers in another thread several weeks ago. I hope the changes allow you to play our game more comfortably.

Here at the studio, we have been discussing a more long-term solution that would let players swap out effects that they find uncomfortable (similar to what some players currently do with sounds). Again, if approved, this will be a long way off, as it would require code time (and I apologize for sounding like a broken record here). In the meantime, we will continue to keep an eye out for outlying effects, like Barrier, that trigger a lot of medical-related complaints.
Great short and long term news!

I'm not sure if that's doable - none of the current status protection powers do that, either, to be fair (IE, you pop a breakfree, you still have the mez there. Toggle Practiced Brawler on, it's still there. Stack more holds and you're held again.)

Of course, none of those (except the breakfree) are "Toggle while held," either.

(Random minor buff idea that just popped up - innate resistance to psy damage. Why? Two minds in one body instead of one. Doesn't come into play a *lot,* I know, but as a flavor thing...)

See, while I don't argue with this... in some cases playing "an" example of an AT doesn't really do it. What if that AT were a defender - you'd have quite the different experience playing Traps versus Force Fields vs Empathy. Controllers are somewhat the same way too (not least because of secondary.)

... that's why you go for one of each powerset.

Joooiiiiinnnnn usssssss .... maaaake the aaalllllttttsssss....
  24. Very nice collection.
