Okay, this is bothering me.

Why oh why does my list of characters on any given server keep rearranging itself? I'd like to be able to choose the order in which my characters appear in that list, but moving them around is pointless if they just move to random new places the next time I log in. Is there any rhyme or reason to this at all?

That used to happen to me all the time, but after the "big fix" (as I recall it took several tries) it's been stable as carved stone for me. That fix was a long time ago -- many issues. I'm surprised it's still happening to anybody.

I can't seem to change my order. If I do, the next time I come back to the screen, it's back to where it was before. Very irritating.

1) Arrange your characters on each server in the exact order you want them. Make sure to move each character at least once.

2) Go into your CoH folder, find the subfolder with your account name on it.

3) Find playerslot.txt. (This may be tricky, what with the folder having one file for every player you've ever exchanged /tells with.)

4) Right-click, "proprieties", check "Read Only", "Apply".

Tadah! Your characters will never move around again.

Mine had been fine since the fix years ago, then about two months ago, my character lists started to shuffle themselves. However, unlike prior to the fix where every server's character list gets shuffled almost daily, this time only one server's list gets shuffled occasionally. I don't know what triggers the shuffling.

Isn't that going to cause a problem if you start a new character?

Nope. IIRC it just tags them at the end.

Thx. This was still happening to me and I just kind of shake my head when I have to go fix it since it was suppose to have been fixed already. It actually wasn't happening for some time, so I wonder if somehow it gets triggered.

This would happen to me if I adjust it from one computer, then log on from a different computer some time later. The second computer obviously doesn't remember what I did from the first one.

The order in which the characters appear on the server lists is saved locally, not on the servers.

New story arcs coming soon (ARC IDs will be aded when I finish the arc):
So, you want to join the Hellions? (level 1-14 Villainous arc)

I know. Its been indirectly mentioned several times. I am not ocd enough for it to bother me, just mentioning when/why it would happen to me.

About two months ago, maybe less, the character list on both of my servers got randomly shuffled, I think into the order I created them. I fixed both and a few days later Justice was shuffled again. Hasn't happened again since then.

I thought the problem was fixed until then because it had been so long. Of course, it was never very common for me... maybe 5 or 6 times (counting those two) since I started playing the game.

I just went into the playerslot.txt file, deleted the content, saved the (empty) text file, and let the game rewrite it when I logged in and arranged my characters as desired. Seems to do the trick without changing the file to read only.

The information in the playslot.txt file is case sensitive and the server name used comes directly from the login edit box without modification. Always type your account name in exactly the same way when you log in if you want to maintain character order.

In more detail, pretending that my account name is "feefaj", if I log on by typing FEEFAJ in the box, rearrange my characters and then log off and log on again but this time type my user id as FeefaJ then I get my characters in a different order.

The good news is that if I log off again and log back in as FEEFAJ then the original order is restored. Logging in as FeefaJ again gives me the order associated with that version. I can effectively maintain multiple character orders by varying the way I type the account name.
