Quote:High resolution computer monitor vs 10 year old crt television. For me at least the computer IS the proper medium.I believe it actually premieres on TV next week. I usually like to watch the premiere of a show on TV to get it in its "proper" medium.
Unfortunately, I will be in Europe next week and will miss it and I don't really feel motivated to watch it now, so I will catch up when I get back. -
It's coming in issue 20 and it will be Cole invading with giant robots.
Chicks dig giant robots. -
Tony Stark takes out his little personal computer thingy. Wires it into a digital camera he buys from a photographer at the event. He wires the two together and uses the resulting scanner to see through the hostesses dress zooming in on and scanning the tattoo then enhancing the image till it is perfect. He then uses the same device to contact the website and enter the password while simultaneously analyzing the radio frequency of the bombs trigger. He backtracks the carrier wave from the bomb and pinpoints the location of the terrorist and passes the coordinates on to war machine. Then he completely disables the bomb remotely.
Now that the 60 seconds since he found out about the problem have passed he goes over and hits on the hostess just so he can see the tattoo live since he was intrigued by what else he saw when scanning it. -
Foamerang said it first but definitely Robin Williams speech in Good Will Hunting. And if this happens to be for a class of young people there is no better monologue to touch them. Absolutely none.

I still want the pie pool. Yes I realize that it would be overpowered but it would also be oh so tasty.

Actually I swear that in two of those Misty Woods missions (hunt Fir Bolg/hunt Redcaps) the game deliberately spawns the opposite of what you need. While hunting the Fir Bolg all you can find is Redcaps. Then finally defeat the Fir Bolg you need and take the hunt Red Caps mission. Suddenly every Redcap spawn point is filled with Fir Bolg.
However I'm pretty sure that the mission the OP was talking about was the Gordon Bower push back the Fir Bolg mission. The real pain in the rear hunts don't come until Kelly Nemmers in the Misty Woods. -
It is an overheating and dying video card. The reason it's fine if you restart the computer is because restarting the computer turns off the power supply to the video card and allows it to cool down. The GPU after all is only a tiny little chip with a large heat sink and fan attached to it. It is only at high temperatures during the times it is under stress.
And incidentally if it is the drivers that caused this problem then it is the 1.9621 drivers. These were the bad ones that were causing cards to overheat. In which case yes it is the drivers but only in that they caused the card to overheat and become damaged. Now there is a very small chance that if you are using these drivers and change them immediately then the card has little enough damage that it could survive for quite some time yet. But like I said it's a small chance especially when you play the most GPU stressful game on the market. Yes there are more graphically intensive games out there but for some reason CoH overworks the card more than anything else I've seen.
Did you tab out and check the temperatures while you were actually in game or did you shut down the game and then check the temperatures? Trust me on this, just the few seconds that it takes to boot up a temperature monitoring program is enough for the temperature of the unit to drop down into normal range.
I am now going to explain exactly what is going to happen. The card is dying. At first you will only see this problem happening at the higher temperatures. It will be when you have been playing for a long time or are in a particularly graphics stressful situation. Then it will start happening after playing for less time. When it starts happening at lower temperatures the entire screen won't explode into planes like in your screenshot but you will see one or two planes coming off of some objects. The temperature at which this happens will gradually drop until the card dies entirely.
You can delay how long it takes for the card to die by using speedfan or a similar program to set your fan speed to 100% when you are playing but I guarantee that you need to start saving up for a new card. -
Are you sure the GD wasn't being affected by a quartz crystal at the time? I don't know if the bonus would be added into his reading or not but that would certainly explain it.
I really hate eminators of all types. -
Ok, the drivers look good. Stereoscopic is set to manual but it is still running so go in and turn it off for now. Lastly go to your game directory and right click on both cityofheroes.exe and cohupdater.exe. Then under properties select the compatability tab and put a check in disable visual themes and disable desktop composition.
When all that is done try running the game again and see what happens. If it still won't load then try checking the safe mode box in the updater startup screen and seeing if the game will load that way. -
Most of these I see I wind up voting for the other guy because honestly when somebody tries to promote their friend or family the promotee usually isn't very good at all. But this one I laughed out loud several times and immediately voted for it without even bothering to check out the competition.
Edit: It looks like the competition only has about one fifth of the number of views too so I'd say there is some cheating going on. -
Well my favorites were already mentioned so I'll second both Dark City and Forbidden Planet. I just picked up the FP blue ray but haven't watched it yet.
Unfortunately I tend to also love shallow cornball type movies such as The Last Dragon and there isn't much to review in that one.
You could try Freaky Friday and show that Lindsay Lohan was an actress sort of once upon a time.
Duets
Doctor Horrible
Support Your Local Sheriff
Shaolin Soccer
True Lies
The Court Jester (The pellet with the poison's in the vessel with the pestle.)
I would suggest Spartacus, Ben Hur or Ten Commandments but they somewhat stomp heavily on your time constraints. -
I would suggest the complete new system. In most of their computers Dell makes it an absolute ***** to replace the power supply. I speak from the experience of having two Dell computers in the past. They have really good prices for complete systems but they don't seem to want you to tamper with them other than to replace cards and drives.
In fact at one point (and I hope they don't do this any more) they had some sort of system setup where your boot drive could only be read by a dell computer unless you reformatted it. It made transferring data from my completely crashed dell a pain in the backside and is the reason I switched over to building my own. -
Now on to the rest. If that really is your complete hijackthislog it is the cleanest one I have ever seen. However two things still stand out.
First, try turning off Steam and launching the game through the updater. There have been some problems reported with launching through Steam.
Second, unless you actually have the Nvidia stereoscopic glasses and are using them you will want to turn off that service. For some reason with the normal Nvidia installation it is an autostart program. And it is known to suck up a lot of processor time in some situations. The way you turn it off is in your start box type services.msc and run that. Scroll down and look for the Nvidia Stereoscopic services. Right click on it and stop the service. Then right click on it and and choose properties. Under startup type set it to manual. -
WARNING WARNING WARNING
Update your drivers immediately without doing anything else on your computer. Don't surf the net, don't watch a video and definitely don't play a game. Those particular drivers are bad. Nvidia recalled them about a week after they were released. They cause video cards to overheat badly. Again, do this immediately as in right now. If you don't then you will be buying a new video card very soon. -
Post the results of these two programs CoHHelper and Hijackthis and we'll see what's up.
Incidentally with 2 gigs of ram and only a Geforce 9500 you won't be blazing through the game. You'll be able to run it just fine on mid range settings with a couple of the graphically challenging settings like ambient occlusion and shadows set to low but do not expect to be able to run the game at high settings. That particular machine would have been able to run at highest settings a couple of years ago but not any more. -
Your drivers are fine and I don't see any background programs that would be causing trouble. CoH just happens to place a huge amount of stress on video cards so if the card is already failing or if the fan is dirty or not running well then it's very easy for the card to overheat.

If you are going and you want a code make sure to go to the meet and greet and not just the con or you will get nothing. That's how it was at PAX this year and from the looks of Avatea's post that's how it's going to be at this con.
I'm beginning to think nobody wants CoH at their shows any more. It's like some minor celebrity tweeting "I'm going to be at the premier of the latest James Cameron movie. I'm holding a party just 3 blocks away and you are all invited." "I'm going to be at Beyonce's party for her new release this weekend. She's actually partying in the ballroom but you can join me on the 23rd floor in room 437."
Of course this does have the advantage that if you know it beforehand then you won't actually have to shell out any money to get into the con. You can go to the off site vaguely sorta kinda related and held in the general neighborhood party. -
It doesn't matter what it looks at so long as they have one particular line in the movie.
"I saw it. It's a lion. It's huge!" -
Odds are that there is some kind of reskinning program on your system. A reskinning program is one that alters the look and feel of the standard interface and the most common one is windowblinds by stardock. Check under your programs and see if you have a stardock directory. If you do then tell it not to reskin either cityofheroes.exe or cohupdater.exe.
If you can't find that program then cut and paste the results of these two programs in here. CoHHelper and Hijackthis -
Does the graphic glitch look like parts of the room or mobs are extending all the way across the screen? For instance something that would be a small triangle in the standard image now continues extending all the way across the screen getting wider as it goes? This is why screenshots are better than descriptions. Anyway, if it looks like I said, like various planes in the room now extend all the way across the screen then that is a heat problem and the card is failing.
If it's not a heat problem then the drivers are probably corrupt. -
If you are set up for dual monitors then set your nvidia preferences for single display performance mode. Even if you don't think you are set up for dual monitors check this to make sure.

First as je saist said make sure your drivers are updated. A few drivers back there was one which was causing problems with overheating. It was the 196.75 version of the drivers.
But if you've lost multiple video cards I can almost bet you have a bad power supply. You really should have a higher wattage one. Also the Antec 430 True Power have been known to have unstable voltages. The reason that CoH exclusively would cause this problem is that it is much harder on your CPU and GPU. As a result when playing it their temperatures climb. When that happens the fan speeds ramp up and draw more power. Which could push the power supply into the unstable range.
Or it could just be that something is screwed up in your system so that no power is getting to the GPU fan. Most video cards can run a lot of games without hitting their temperature limits even without the fan operating but in a game that stresses the card the fan absolutely has to be operating or you will burn out the card.
What it all comes down to is I strongly suggest that you replace your power supply no matter what. But definitely check those drivers. -
It is hit or miss just like glowies spawning inside the stairs in that one office map used to be. They just have to figure out what that one particular spawn point is and lock it off.
