Opengl type games are much more stressful on cards than directx types, and CoH is one of the worst offenders. So it is possible for an opengl game to heat a card to the danger point while a more graphically intense directx game won't bother it.

Of course the air coming from your case feels cool to you, the whole intent of cooling fans is to pull cool air through the case and cool everything down. The cool air situation is like setting a space heater in front of a pile of tissue then setting a box fan in the doorway of your apartment. The fact that the air blowing out of the apartment feels cool doesn't mean that the paper isn't being heated to the combustion point.

The only way to be sure that the temperature of the gpu is in the safe zone is to use a temperature monitoring program while playing the game. Get into a graphically intense situation and alt-tab out to see the temperature.
  3. Morality is not a constant. It is an arbitrary value assigned by a society. It varies by a huge amount based on the global location and the time period in which is it defined.

So in the current time period and in the society which uses them the answer is yes, the use of DVRs is moral.

Of course in any society which has a large population there will be subsets of that population who don't believe in the same moral values. They are the ones who will argue that the morals are outdated and that society needs to catch up with reality. They then will use this argument to justify their immoral or sometimes even illegal behavior. And they may actually be correct that society has not caught up with reality. That doesn't however change the fact that they are violating the morals and laws of the society which they are a part of currently.

So back to the original post. Use of DVRs is neither immoral nor illegal by the standards of the society in which they are being used. Pirating is considered both illegal and immoral by the society in which those same DVRs are being used. Yes there are many people who use bittorrent to pirate movies and music but as I said before. They are a part of that subset who believes that the rules of society don't apply to them.

And the great majority of that subset who defies the current trends consists of teens. It is a virtual guarantee that every generation of teens believe that theirs is a new morality and a new visionary way of thinking. And then when they reach their mid twenties they look back at their teen self and say "Man I was a *******."

It is there for a reason. People wanted the ability to just get in a queue and wind up on a team. The same sort of mechanism that other MMOs have. The reason it's used successfully in the other MMOs is that the alternative to it is to form up a team and then trek across a couple zones to get to the entrance. You can't form up a team and then use the queue to join.

If the queue were restricted to individuals then it would work as advertised and the wait times displayed would be accurate. Plus it would help if there were an incentive for joining a PUG in the trial. There is another MMO for instance that has a pet pug that you can get by teaming up with 100 other people in random heroic dungeons. Of course they are limited by a team size of 4 so that means you have to randomly join 34 teams.

This thread sounds once again like the classic "My Scrapper is suddenly facing one of the very few things I can't kill in 0.002 seconds" syndrome. It's funny how players who are used to instantly mowing down 99.9% of their opponents get when they stumble over something that actually challenges them.
Personally I enjoy the challenges. That's why I set up specific targeting, to counter them. That's the secret to challenges, find out how to overcome them. And I'll have you know that it actually takes me 0.007 seconds to kill things with my scrappers. So that 0.002 figure you came up with must be for frankenslotted and incarnate scrappers.

    Computer Crashes

Your symptoms of crashing in and out of game plus having to reboot the system multiple times are just screaming hardware failure. It could be a drive, video card, motherboard or even power supply.

Describe exactly what the crash is like. In other words complete shutdown? Reboots itself? Blue Screen?

Does the computer make strange noises that it didn't used to make? Have you opened the case and looked inside?

Need all this information and any thing else you can think to add.
  7. Can you trigger the power without a target? If not then it's targeted.

Now personally I think that Spinning Strike should have been a PBAOE. That is after all what it's effects are. But there is probably something in the combo mechanism that only allows the buffs to be put on targeted attacks.

Well, technically players can do this by eating a bunch of yellows. Or using any number of powers which give them huge to hit buffs. Which is why a defense based powerset isn't very useful in pvp. Elude might as well not even exist against another player.

But when coming up against mobs like this you have to remember that purples are no longer your friend. Instead increase your resistance, to hit, and damage and take out the offenders as quickly as possible. Set up a targeting macro specifically for them. I haven't run a def based character in a while but I used to have macros set up for quartz and observers so I could make sure I had them targeted well before entering combat.

It already exists with the series on the movie channels. Game of Thrones, True Blood and others that are on networks like Showtime, HBO etc... But for channels available on basic or expanded basic I don't see that happening. Sure people can fast forward through commercials but human nature is to be impatient. There are plenty of people who aren't willing to wait to watch a program on their dvr. They have to watch it live. So long as that demographic is substantial commercials will continue to exist.

EDIT: And I forgot to mention a scary aspect. It is possible for DVRs to be triggered to not fast forward through commercials. You can actually see this function used in some VOD selections. Most of the VODs that include commercials allow you to fast forward but some of them the commercials are unskippable. So the technology is available to make all commercials work that way.
  10. I got no virus warnings there. But I have adblock enabled and I suspect that the code is in one of the ads on the site, which most likely rotate.

Still, for people who don't take advanced protection steps that's a good warning.

I should point out that in real life we shouldn't be able to hear the explosions from that spaceship, either, since there's no air in space for sound to travel through.

In short, just repeat to yourself, "It's just a show, I should really just relax."
In the 22nd century as space flight and combat became common it was discovered that without the visceral impact of sound and vibration, humans tended not to take explosions seriously. As a result they would pilot their own combat craft close to or even through explosions causing severe damage or destruction of their own ships. When survivors were questioned about this behavior the response was always the same. The silent explosion didn't seem severe, or even quite real.

After some basic research on the subject it was decided that the most simple solution would be to pipe artificial explosion sounds through the communication systems of the ship. The greater the explosion the louder and deeper the artificial sound.

So although sound does not travel through a vacuum anybody in a ship or even a space suit will hear the sounds of any nearby explosion.
  12. Getting a copy of something for free is not pirating. Pirating is the action of making copies.

If somebody hands you a copy which they have made of a dvd or cd or game it is not you who has pirated, it is the person handing the copy to you.

The reason bittorrenting is pirating is because while downloading content you are simultaneously uploading that same content to other users. Since you are uploading you are pirating.

So far as I know nobody has a dvr that broadcasts its programs to other people so the whole concept behind the OP has zero bearing on reality. And just to head off a potential argument, recording a broadcast that you are entitled to receive falls under fair use and it doesn't matter if you zip through the commercials or not. Advertisers do not pay for a guarantee that somebody will watch their commercial. They pay for the possibility that somebody will.

But the lack of loss of temperature has nothing to do with heat radiating out from your body and then just forming a room temperature pocket around you. Nothing even remotely like that occurs. It's just that a vacuum is the worse possible conductor of heat because there is no substance touching your body that can absorb the heat energy. So the only loss is direct thermal radiation.
  14. Well there is one thing to look forward as far as Twilight goes. It is the movie that will be so terrible that it will end the world, or at least dramatically change it.

The movie is being released in December 2012 just as the Mayans foretold.

The reason you don't freeze to death like people think is that there is nothing out in space so your body heat radiates out and then pretty much just sits there as long as you don't move... So the heat around you is a comfortable room temperature ^.^
Wow, you couldn't be more wrong if capatain wrong hit you with the wronghammer of wrongness. But since it's pointless arguing with you I'll just say, try doing the research again. And actually read it this time.

    New to the game

The typical MMO is like a movie. Driving to the theatre, finding a parking place, waiting in line for the ticket, waiting in line for snacks... and then at the end of all that annoying wait you finally get to the good part, the movie. It's great to be able to skip a lot of that through methods like having friends buy the tickets and the snacks and save you a seat. After all, you are there for the movie, not the wait.

CoX is like a museum of stuff you like. You can travel through the museum seeing neat things like a spacesuit that actually walked on the moon or the dress Anne Francis wore in Forbidden Planet (dang that woman was tiny) or maybe a telescope owned by a famous astronomer. And then at the end you can see an entertaining cartoon featuring Marvin the Martian.

What you are doing is treating the museum like it's a movie. You are jumping barriers, ducking under ropes, and sneaking through a maintenance door just so you can see the cartoon at the end without having to bother with the museum.

    Xmas Geek Swag?

I got the ultimate geek gift. A bottle of tequila. It is capable of altering reality if you consume enough of it.
  18. There once was a villain named Clockwork Queen. She was a powerful psychic in her own right with the ability to control machinery. But she was overshadowed by the hero known as Yin-Tin-Tin. He had his hero monicker due to his ability to control all canines. And by all I mean all as in he could form a hive mind with every single dog, wolf, coyote and lycanthrope on the planet. Villains didn't mess with him because of the ubiquitous nature of dogs. Even the invulnerable ones could never be sure that the next pug they passed wouldn't run into an alleyway and emerge with a chunk of (insert deadly mineral here)ite in its jaws.

Then came the fateful day that Clockwork Queen and Yin-Tin-Tin entered into combat. Her machines and his dogs were fighting to a standstill. Everything from tiny gears fighting chihuahuas to huge robots fighting warwolves. Knowing that she would run out of robots before Yin ran out of dogs, the Clockwork Queen surged into direct mind to mind combat with Yin. To the shock of both her and Yin they found that their minds were so alike and so closely intertwined that there could no longer be anything but love between the two of them.

Yin and the queen chose to make love not war from that point on. They kept their romance a secret because although she had given up her life of villainy the Clockwork Queen's true identity was well known and being seen with her would destroy the heroic reputation of Yin-Tin-Tin. The two had a child and named her Penelope. For a while the three of them were happy together but Clockwork Queen found herself longing for the old days and began to commit crimes again.

They were just petty little crimes at first. An animated watch scampering out of a jewelry store with an expensive diamond necklace. An ATM running off with all it's cash. But eventually the desire for world domination began to work it's way into Clockwork Queen's mind again. At that point she knew that she would never be able to resist and that eventually her needs would destroy the lives of her lover and their child.

But the Clockwork Queen knew a secret. That a device had recently come into existence. One that could allow her to rule the world if she so chose. She did not choose that path however since a victory won too easily was no victory at all. Reaching out with her mind she found the PsychoChronoMetron and gave it the essential commands. She would become young and at the peak of her powers again but with the knowledge and skills gained thorough many years of experience. And she would change her form to that of a male. The Clockwork King would be taken oh so much more seriously than the Queen. A second tweak of the PsychoChronoMetron erased all knowledge of the super hero Yin-Tin-Tin. Memories of his heroic past locked deep within his mind Yin fully embraced his identity of a shopkeeper. Living in peace and raising his daughter Penelope Yin felt no longing for the life he did not recall. And although he sometimes dreamed of Penelope's mother she was just a glimpsed face and whispered name lost in the past.

The Clockwork King's final use of the PsychoChronoMetron was to cause himself to forget about the device and his family. But nothing can fully destroy the bond of a mother's love. So even now the ruthless Clockwork King still finds himself rendered helpless by the smile of a child named Penelope. Though he knows not why he also knows that he would change reality itself to keep her safe.

As for the new entry to DA. I'm guessing glowing portals with some nifty new special effects will open up both red and blue side. There will be new contacts there straining with all their magical might to keep the inhabitants of DA from escaping. And of course recruiting folks to venture through and save the day. The portals will not be placed in one of the already existing co-op zones so as to avoid incarnates hanging around in the zone all day broadcasting for teams. Instead DA itself will be the meeting place where they team up. Much like the RWZ is now but higher level.
  19. As for the lighthearted silliness, expect more of it. Moffat has said that he believes that Doctor Who has been getting too adult and although it should be entertaining to adults it should be aimed at children.

And didn't he call the space suit an impact suit at one point? Could have sworn I heard that. If so it would imply it was designed to survive reentry.

  21. I've always been disappointed by the Christmas episodes. Except for Voyage of the Damned but they killed Astrid in that one so it was a downer. This one was my favorite by a huge margin.

Something that may factor in is that I love the Narnia stories and movies and had watched Dawn Treader earlier today.

  23. I thought it's pretty obvious what the apocalypse is going to be. The final Twilight movie will be released in November 2012. The horsemen of the apocalypse were a reference to the first four movies in the series.
  24. There is a slight possibility that your new system won't ever be able to see the old drive. I build my own systems all the time, I swap components around and install new ones. However one old Dell I owned somehow formatted the drives in a non standard way. That motherboard could recognize and access them but all other systems saw the drives as being unformatted. There might be a way around it but I didn't find one.

If you can connect the drive inside the computer even though it won't fit inside the docking station do that. If the computer can recognize it that way you can just leave it hanging loose long enough to transfer all the data you want across.
