I've been on most of the maps in this game often enough to have subconsciously memorized them, and I keep the map window open, and I still regularly get lost when I'm on a team. Last time I did the ITF, I somehow ended up on the complete opposite side of a map from the rest of the team.
I also tend to forget to use my Ouroboros portal when I'm on teams. I never forget that it's there when I'm solo, but as soon as there's a team window, my mind goes into "get to the tram!" mode and I don't remember that I have access to the portal until someone else uses one.
I do a lot of moderately embarrassing things on teams. It's normal for me. -
Quote:Nope. It's not luck. I've never been kicked from a team for any reason. Most of my characters have no travel power. I have a Kin defender who only uses melee attacks and didn't take Speed Boost until level 30. I have a petless mastermind. I played TA when TA was regarded as completely ineffective, useless and broken. I don't even make "team builds", I design every character to be effective solo and play them exactly the same way on teams.Maybe I'm just lucky, or perhaps Triumph is just a better server than the others, but in my experience, you are not going to get booted from a team based on your power selections.
And in over four years of playing, with some of the most ridiculous builds I can find ways to make and play, I've never been kicked from a team. I've never been asked to leave a team. I've never even met anyone in the game who claimed to have been kicked from another team, or seen someone complaining about it in /broadcast. I've rarely left a team without someone asking if they can add me to their friends or global friends list (which still surprises me, to this day). In all of that time, not one of these people with their raging Emmertudes has ever crossed my path... except, of course, here on the forums.
The reality is that these people are in such an extreme minority that they're irrelevant. I have no doubt that they behave like fascists in the game, but they're also restricting themselves to SG teams, small groups of close-knit friends or global lists where people are aware of their behavior, so they don't actually affect the vast majority players in any way.
Bunch of hot air and chest thumping, that's all it is. Build nazis don't matter. They never have, they never will, no matter how much their egos say otherwise. -
Quote:Do you have a developer comment indicating that they "intend" for us to play any specific powerset in any specific way, or that they disapprove of any "unintended" power or powerset usage that isn't directly related to an exploit? I'd like to see it, please. However you should look as if you're making the effort to use the set in the way that it was intended
Before you answer that, I've broached this subject with Castle on more than one occasion, and I know that he thinks it's absolutely wonderful to see players turning the game on it's head this way and doing things he never expected, as long as they aren't exploits. And Castle's sentiment is pretty much standard for the entire team. So you might want to re-examine your determination to kick other players based on what you think the developers "intend".
That "play the way you're told" crap went out the door with Jack Emmert. And you don't get to reinstate it, mister. If you want to be a build nazi, you go right ahead, but don't try to justify it by claiming that you're just following the rules.
And for anyone else claiming to be entitled to kick other players for not having your idea of an acceptable build, the only person you're really hurting is yourself. A good player with a "gimp" build is a better player, and person, than you, because that player is willing to take a chance on something different, isn't afraid to deviate from the cookie cutter mentality and can actually teach you more about the game than you'll ever learn from reading the wiki and copying someone else's build on the forums. Nor will a new player with a "gimp" build learn anything by being kicked, except that you're a selfish ****** who can't even be bothered to talk to someone and help them improve their experience in this game. -

Elation! Excitement!
I just switched monitor input over to the other computer (been using my old Win98 box for the last few days, plugged into the second port on my LCD) to check Testdisk's progress, and saw that it had located one named copy of the partition. This is significant because every other tool I've used which has been able to display the partition did so with no name attached.
It's a step in the right direction. Now, if I'm really lucky, Testdisk will be able to repair or restore the MFT. If I'm lucky, but not that lucky, the partition itself will at least still be intact and contain valid data, rather than be empty. I'll settle for that, it'll make recovering from this fiasco much less onerous.
Amusing side-thought: only a Co* player would be this excited over getting a name. -
Quote:I can't do that. As I said, the OS won't even begin to load and WinPE can't locate the SATA devices (HDD or optical).I think that the HDD issue might be cleared up by booting and doing a CHKDSK.
And it wouldn't have worked anyway. I've managed to figure out what happened. Boot sector and master boot record both corrupt, MFT and MFT mirror bad, the entire partition is essentially lost. chkdsk couldn't repair that because it uses the MFT mirror to correct problems with the MFT.
I have Testdisk running a deep scan now, hoping that it will be able to pull some kind of miracle out of its hat.
Quote:I've always used Spinrite to help out on major HDD errors and the latest version 6 is compatible with NTFS.
There isn't even really that much that I need to recover, I have most of the things I wanted to save stashed on another HDD. I just don't want to deal with the hassle of reinstalling the OS, removing the garbage, updating the OS and drivers again, completely starting over... ugh. -
I was playing Co* Sunday morning (3 or 4 a.m.), hit the ferry to Port Oakes to grab the badges and plaques on my newly minted level 20 Mind/Fire dominator... and never made it past the zone load screen. HDD was at full throttle. I managed to tab out to Mids' after three or four minutes, but that was all it would do. Mids' wasn't responding to anything, neither of the browser windows I had open were responsive, Co* was deadlocked with Port Oakes halfway loaded. Mouse pointer still moved, but clicking got me the same results as using the keyboard, zilch.
After 10-12 minutes of waiting, I decided to risk cycling the power. Got to the welcome screen, never went any further. Waited five or six minutes, rebooted it again, made it to the desktop, but ended up with the same lack of responsiveness. HDD kept churning, system ignored all input.
Rebooted again and tried to go into safe mode, got nailed with a BSOD. Stop 0x7b (boot failure caused by boot virus, corrupted driver or bad MBR).
Another reboot, attempted last known good config, same BSOD.
Next reboot, OS doesn't even start to load. "Error loading OS".
Been pounding my head against this wall for hours now. If this were three years ago, when I was running 2k Server, I would've had it fixed and been back in the game within fifteen minutes, but the tools I used then aren't compatible with 64 bit software or 500GB HDDs. So I'm floundering.
Tried WinPE, can't get it to recognize my HDD (it's recognized by the BIOS and is working, and i can access it with some other utilities), so I can't do a startup repair. Tried UBCD, but the utilities are either too old and don't find the HDD, or not compliant with 64 bit and can't access what's on the HDD, or need information that I can't get, like exactly where my partition tables begin and end (and i'm not going to guess... trying to fix this, not make it worse).
Running out of options and patience. I don't have a 64 bit Vista DVD (was pre-installed on the computer, no x64 media included. A 32 bit recovery disc was included, but I can't use that to fix the problem, only to do a fresh factory install.
Tried a different SATA cable and port, no shiny.
Still scouring the 'net for solutions, but right now, I'm almost to the point of attaching an SATA adapter to an old 80GB IDE drive and trying to install the 32 bit version on that... might be able to transfer everything over to the 500GB drive at some point... Going to try a partition manager (or three... or five, or however many i can find to monkey around with), and keep digging around online, but if anyone has any suggestions, I'm open to them.
The only reason I bought an off-the-shelf computer this time was because it cost me about $100 less than rebuilding my old gaming rig, and buying a brand new one would give me a 64 bit foundation to work with for my next upgrade cycle. Guess I should have started from scratch after all... at least then I would've had a physical copy of Vista x64 to work with and could have tried a repair installation.
Of all of the things I loved about being a tech, dealing with HDD issues wasn't on that list. Part of the reason I was relieved when I quit doing it. Argh. *sigh* -
Quote:SJ is +2780% Jump Height and +249% Jump Speed.Using no teammate based buffs (or Ninja Run), what kinds of enhancements/slotting/IOs would it take to get Combat Jumping to have the roughly the same height/speed as single slotted Super Jump?
CJ is +200% Jump Height and +1% (yes, 1%, not a typo) Jump Speed.
There are no enhancements which will improve CJ enough to get it up to those numbers, or even in anywhere near those numbers. You can use Hurdle, which, when slotted with three Jump SOs or level 25+ IOs, will increase your jump speed to almost equal unslotted SJ, but no slotting will increase your jump height to equal SJ. If you want height to match SJ without using SJ, your only options are Inertial Reduction, the Zero-G pack (second Safeguard/Mayhem mission, toggles off CJ), Nebulous Form (warshade) or the GvE Jump Pack.
Quote:To my understanding, some defense shields actually aid this and can give speed buffs. -
Quote:Predictability. Warehouse map #17 is always the same, the story behind why you're sent there is always the same, the contact who sends you to it is always the same, the enemies you face on that map, for that story, are always the same... you can look at a mission and know that you'll be sent to a certain map, that you'll be fighting a specific enemy group on that map, you'll know exactly where the objective is and even which "glowie spawn" it's likely to be (safe, desk, wall safe, etc.). You can go in with a different costume, different powers, different team, but it's still Warehouse #17 populated by Enemy Group #8 with Glowie Spawn #11 in Room #9, in Story #41.I see a lot of repeated suggestions and complaints, but I'm curious: What do you think the most important problems with the game are right now?
Randomized maps, randomized story elements (foes populating map, reason for going there, etc.), like newspaper/scanner missions, but more thorough, more all-encompassing, covering every contact and mission, would remove the predictability and improve the replay value of the game.
I also think we need deformable terrain, because it's just not a superhero/villain scenario without walls being destroyed and craters being blasted, but... *shrug* -
Quote:It's not Hurdle. Hurdle has no graphical effects, not even a different jump animation. Piston Boots (crafted costume piece) creates a cloud of steam when you jump or land. Combat Jumping and Super Jump have particle effects. And there was a bug a year or two back which had one of the Safeguard/Mayhem mission temp powers "stealing" Combat Jumping's graphics on characters with both the temp power and CJ, but that was fixed.I know sprint has the dust cloud too, but I have sprint toggled off (for this same reason). I can only assume that it's hurdle since it only appears when I jump and when I land.
This isn't an out of hand dismissal, I was playing my newest character last night, with just Hurdle for getting around (one more level to pick up CJ) and I didn't have any particle effects. You've got something else causing it. -
All of my characters are concept first, but the most important thing I've learned in all of the time that I've been playing is that you really have to put some effort into making a bad character. By "bad", I mean one that simply cannot progress without relying on the generosity of others or piles upon piles of inspirations.
I learned that during I6, when I was leveling up my Kin scrapper, a character I created as a response to all of the cries of ED "killing defenders". Pool melee attacks, no damage SOs, solo nearly the entire way to 50... and it worked. It worked better than I expected. It worked well enough to defeat Terra solo and go toe to toe with Adamastor for ten minutes.
These days, with IOs, Real Numbers, numerous improvements to the game, a rocking wiki and a much more informed, eager-to-help community, I don't think any concept build can be made which can't solo well, contribute to teams and be fun to play. I honestly believe one would have to deliberately build a character with the intention of it being completely incapable of being played at all in order to make it "unplayable", or even "not worth playing".
That said, every player is going to have his or her own determination of what is "unplayable". Some people simply cannot tolerate anything which doesn't obliterate everything in a spawn in less than ten seconds. Some people prefer to take their time and role play every single use of a power. Some people don't like melee, others don't like ranged combat. Some want to blitz spawns, some want to herd, some want to ghost entire missions, some just want to hang out and talk or show off their latest costumes. None of them are "wrong", none of them are "right", none are "better" or "worse". What they all are is what the person playing them enjoys, and that's really all that matters.
"Gimp" is a state of mind. Everything works, it's just a matter of how well it works for the individual in question. -
Quote:The animation times on Snap and Aimed are standard for tier 1 and 2 ranged attacks. 1s for tier 1 attacks, 1.67s for tier 2 attacks. Defenders, in fact, get a bonus with Aimed Shot, it has the same 1s animation time that Snap Shot has.To be honest I haven't noticed it till someone had said the animation time was to slow but now I'm really starting to notice.
Fistful of Arrows' animation is one of the fastest ones for cones, 1.17s. Most cones take 2s or longer to animate.
The animation times for targeted AoEs, snipes and status effects (Explosive Arrow, Ranged Shot and Stunning Shot) are all over the place on every blast set, so there isn't really a standard to which they can be compared. Archery's are faster than some, slower than some (except Ranged Shot, but since it's not actually slower than some other snipes, it can't be conclusively stated as "too slow").
Rain of Arrows' animation time is one of the longest for the tier 9 powers, but it also draws no aggro until the pet spawns (approximately 3s), and it's ranged (as opposed to PBAoE), AND it can be fired from out of line of sight. Compare that to any other "nuke", which expects a player to stay in line of sight or in the middle of the spawn, completely drains the character's endurance and/or takes six times as long to recharge. An extra 1-2s of animation time isn't a burden when you think about it.
Quote:Burning Arrow seems a bit to long to me idk.

Quote:RoA has three hit checks. One when it spawns, one 0.4s after it spawns and a third 0.8s after it spawns. It despawns at 1s, before it could make a fourth check. Each hit check is separate from the others, and every enemy in the AoE is checked independently. With a 16 target limit, that means it checks 48 times, and even at the accuracy cap, it's going to miss some of those. In terms of what Rain of Arrows hits, it's two pulses of damage to whatever is in the patch, slightly spread out over time (maybe a second or two), so you want to make sure you place it right. I was under the impression that it has a target cap, as I haven't heard of any power being free of that requirement. I suppose that the first pulse could hit up to 16 or whatever, and then the second pulse pick other targets, but I'm not sure. I haven't ever investigated that much. Luminara should chime in... knows more about Archery than is probably healthy, that one. Heh.
No matter what, RoA is great fun to watch and use. Feels so appropos when I use it on an Imperious TF.
Some players do only see two hits from RoA. This is caused by one of two things-- lack of proper slotting for Accuracy (it doesn't actually have an Accuracy bonus, it's 1.0, so it needs to be slotted for Accuracy or you need to have ToHit buffs active when you use it); or mistimed server-client communication (which can, essentially, cause the pet to despawn early, before it makes that third hit check). But by design, it has three hit checks per enemy.
RoA can target up to 16 foes at a time, for each check, so if you do happen to have critters wandering in and out in that 0.8s period, the power does "forget" the old targets and check the new ones. If you have more than 16 in the AoE, then targets are checked randomly, to the best of my knowledge. -
No, it actually doesn't. The build was either effective or ineffective. Since he didn't die and did defeat the spawn, the build was not ineffective. Therefore it must be effective.

A lot of good stuff packed into this update. Especially excited about animated tails, been waiting for that since I started playing.

Quote:Main Entry: 1ef·fec·tiveAnd you did ok for a Mastermind with no pets, I get that it's a challenge and believe me, nobody understands the concept of challenge better than I do. I was simply pointing out that the term "effective" doesn't belong in the thread title
Pronunciation: \i-ˈfek-tiv, e-, ē-, ə-\
Function: adjective
Date: 14th century
1 a : producing a decided, decisive, or desired effect <an effective policy> b : impressive, striking <a gold lamé fabric studded with effective precious stones Stanley Marcus>
2 : ready for service or action <effective manpower>
His build produced a desired effect and is ready for action. And you can see from the responses that several of us did find it impressive. Not meeting your personal definition of the word, or the goals you'd set for yourself, doesn't make it any less acceptable or correct for him to say that his build is effective. -
Quote:The point of a petless mastermind isn't to outshine other ATs, it's to create challenge where little or none exists, to find creative ways to work around limitations, to accomplish what others consider impossible or "too much work".I don't think it's a question of whether a petless Mastermind is capable of soloing. It's a question of the number crunchers squeezing every last bit of effectiveness from a build. For Masterminds, that means pets.
It's a question of pushing your min/max abilities to their limits, and for masterminds, that means no pets.
GuyPerfect, bravo. Well done. I was especially impressed with your +Regen. I may have to re-examine my own petless build in light of how effective it was for you. -
