For all the people that mention this stupidity:

We have the Alpha slot and just two of its four tiers, at that. It is also the first of ten slots.

If we consider each slot as being "5 levels" of Incarnate, with each tier dividing equally into that "5 levels"... There is no player in the game that is currently higher rank than a level 2.5 Incarnate. We can assume that Statesman at least has up to the final tier of the Judg"e"ment slot through his use of Hammer of Justice and Zeus' Lightning Bolt (based on the powers information you can look up for two of the final tiers for the Judg"e"ment slot powers in-game). With that, we know that Statesman is at least a "level 10" Incarnate versus our puny 2.5.

    ...

And then of course there's the "It's a game. You can't expect to be the pwnzor out of the box" argument.

Not like it's unheard of for them to disallow it.

Just off the top of my head of something that was specifically changed: Lord Recluse in the STF. Yeah, you can still pull him...just not "away" from his Towers. And while it's not exactly pulling in the classically defined sense, the last patch dealt with making Director 11's mine pets less easily bypassed (not to mention the small room they make you fight him in, complete with ambushes).

Another interpretation? Battle Maiden can't be pulled "away" from her swords of doom; additionally, her painfully slow crossbow attack and extremely long range with it also strike me as being another form of anti-pulling. Also, you can consider the fight against Nictus Romulus in the ITF. Yeah, you can separate him from his pets but it does require coordination beyond "hide in the hallway" and isn't completely guaranteed as a tactic.

  5. The average I've been seeing (and when asked, been told by others) is 6-8 shards on a "kill everything in the way" runs.

    Additionally...
    Tier 1 Alpha: 12 Shards
    Tier 2 Alpha: 20 Shards
Tier 3 Alpha: 28? 32? 40? And that's just for one. Based on the way the lines are drawn, you might need both sides of the tree to unlock the Very Rare boosts.
    Final Tier Alpha: 60? 80? 100?

And then if you consider the Judgement (really devs?) slot, we have no knowledge other than what the Alpha's first two tiers cost.

Breakfrees. Ramiel sells them. So does the Combat Medic or whatever it's named in RWZ.

If you have any objection to using Inspirations, I don't care. I really don't. All it would prove is that arguing with you would be like trying to fight shadows with a dirty flashlight.

I don't think anyone underrates Wormhole. It's the general low opinion of Gravity that damns it to some level of obscurity. Hell, a power that lets you move Hamidon in the LGTF? Nobody can think that's lame.

As for the thread topic... Cage powers. Though to be fair, their good uses are absurdly situational as to be meaningless. And this only really refers to the single-target ones slotted with a certain HO.

Actually, just giving it real accuracy instead of a penalty would probably make all the difference it would ever need. As it stands, you have to practically devote yourself to making it worth the time and even then? It's still not a plausible power until you get to SO-level enhancement numbers. For such an early power, it really shouldn't have such drawbacks.
  8. Glad to see Lord Recluse is a fan of Monty Python.
  9. I enjoyed using my Ice/Thermal. Ice Storm and Blizzard (no nuke crash = awesome) combined? Instantaneous death. I only wish I had a toon with Ice Blast/Cold (or Storm) for three at a time.

I never did get the answer from my associate but I'm kind of curious what Oppressive Gloom does to you when it applies its self damage effect. That and I want to use Enforced Morale on someone.

Honestly didn't mean to. The posts kind of blended together in my head due to the great deal of amusement the Morally Justified crowd kept bringing and the cat analogy sort of railroaded where I was aiming; your views are more than reasonable.
That and I was partially annoyed at my original point of "Guys...it's the same ****, just a different pile. Get over it (and yourselves) and let the devs deal with it when they get to it" being attacked under some accusation of trying to hold on to my apparent last bastion of 'sploiting teh xpz.

I would dispute that. Being proud of your fanfiction doesn't make it good. Fanfiction Fridays on Topless Robot can attest to that.

Then again, I find arcs like The Footsteps Initiative extremely irritating because they encompass everything I hate about above-average writers who are making a bad attempt at being funny (it's hard to describe...but if I were to try... the arc makes me feel like the author is reading over my shoulder, laughing at their own jokes). As such, my views on quality in the AE system are probably very separate from most.

I've never owned or even heard of a cat this stupid. Even the dumbest cats I've had the displeasure of experiencing self-regulated their intake. Either your grandmother was an incompetent caretaker of cats or she was mistaking her cat for what people in the business like to call a dog (that said, if your dog has the above issues, you're doing a poor job of taking care of your dog, too, but most people don't want to accept that accusation).

Your argument is still silly. The people who left because of the--at the time--completely justified claims that there was nothing to do at level 50 would have left regardless of if it took them 2 days to level or 2 months. That's what they do.

I get so tired of reading this here and in bad character descriptions.

You run 46 kph without a second's thought, wearing any manner of goofy CosPlay gear and improper footwear.
You jump 10 meters into the air at any time of your choosing and under any regular conditions.
You take multiple shotgun bursts to the chest before faltering at the first level of power.

No one is "Normal Joe" in CoH. Period. Note: That doesn't mean not "Natural". Just not Angry Regular Man, wearing their duster and trench coat with Assault Rifle/Devices.

Reading that crap just makes me miss the old Blue King (name? something like that, I don't remember) comics that had player-written stories in them towards the end of each issue that were actually all pretty awesome.

I'm not attacking you but for god's sake, lighten up to some level on it. Your tasks at 50 include giving beatings to another dimension's god's BAD MOOD.

    Problem Enemies

The only mobs I have a true hatred for are any that do the periodic phasing crap. Everything else can be countered mechanically by something other than "kill the source before [x] happens". I think I probably would have mutinied if the introduction of Ghost Widow to the game as a mob would have meant a second Diabolique. I'm cool with powered phasing (Barracuda's Reichsman, CoP aspect, etc.) but the periodic on-off crap? Bleagh.
  16. I never really run into the issue since I've always been picky on details of what I'm using but I have explained some of the more... "interesting" aspects of powers such as using Benumb on Minotaurs/Cyclops..es/other-similar-mobs before they use their uberShield powers.

    AE Removal?

    <QR>

Largely indifferent at this point. I was extremely enthusiastic about the system. It was a nice step away from some of the tired content out there and allowed me to express my own creativity and interests.

And then badge collectors "of meretritious intent and method" (Hi Beefcake, yeah, I totally believe you played my challenge map, I believe it so much I re-posted it to remove your pestilent touch just out of principle), farming whiners (both sides), "challenge" whiners (oh, Venture, how I miss your reviews making everyone bandwagon hate anything that remotely made a point of trying to best the player), maps that get pulled...then never return because of [insert alleged problem here], and then just the relative lack of development interest shown the system ever since Positron made his PR screw-up finger wagging, all of which added up to make me absurdly uninterested in something that had originally held such enthusiasm from myself.

Sadly, I just don't see myself getting interested in it again for more than a chance meeting (e.g., global friend forcing me into running Footsteps, again...god that's boring and juvenile) without the system's capabilities getting a major upgrade to improve the conveyance of my and others' stories. I'm not Stephen King (and based on what I've seen of AE, most people don't seem to be 8th grade English graduates) nor do I expect others to be but the wasted potential in the system just leaves me feeling distraught. There's just so much trash and so little gold that I just don't have the energy to seek.

No. The major difference is that it is far easier to build for defense than resistance (Weave? Defense +all. Combat Jumping? Defense +all. Tough? Resist +smashing & lethal.) so we end up seeing defense being the general source of patching up a character's shortcomings. If the set bonuses for resistance didn't suck so badly, you might see alternative builds.

    Quote:
    2. Do you believe there is an issue with the lack of effective hard limit on the amount of available defense for each AT?
There are counters being put in place more and more often. While you're obviously not going to self-Soft Cap in Praetoria, a lot of what those mobs do and are capable of are clearly a sign of things to come. So no, I don't see a problem.

    Quote:
    3. Do you believe that there is an issue with the lack of inherent protection to secondary effects within the damage resistance mechanic?
Huh? Well, if you're talking about protection against resistance debuffs (which are incredibly rare for mobs to have, sadly), that's a part of the mechanics behind resistance in that it protects itself against debuffs. Yeah, I suppose it's not the same as outright avoiding the debuff but oh well. In general, the resist sets do have additional debuff protection (Dark Armor's Murky Cloud) but it tends to be centralized with their mez protection (Rooted, Static Shield, etc.). Though it does occur in auto resistance powers as well (Temperature Protection, Invuln's entire set, etc.).

    Quote:
    4. Do you believe there is and issue with the amount of available resistance bonuses that can be stacked vs. the amount of available defense bonuses?
See response to #1. Yes, I believe that the resistance bonuses are pretty awful (just as a comparison point, if the silly conversion is used, the existence of Kinetic Combat's stacking +3.75% smash/lethal defense should imply a stacking +7.5% smash/lethal resistance bonus exists somewhere) and don't really mean anything except in the most extreme cases (someone using Stone Armor wanting to be silly and cap their resist to mostly everything while in Granite).

    Quote:
    5. Do you believe it would be worthwhile to stack resistance bonuses instead of defense bonuses, if the amount of available bonuses were currently comparable?
You won't see me turning down Sonic Resonance or Thermal shield buffs. +Resistance is great.

    Quote:
    6. Do you believe that a change should be made to make the efficiency of resistance and defense more comparable?
In IOs? Yes. In the general game? No. And don't ask leading questions.

The only other grievance I personally have is that Sonic Dispersion doesn't have psionic resistance when it really should.

    Quote:
    7. Do you believe that if a change were made, that defense should be brought more toward resistance or vice versa?
This assumes a problem I haven't acknowledged as existing. No answer.

    Quote:
    8. Am I completely nuts, and resistance is actually more effective than defense?
It's situational. Additionally, having one or the other isn't an advantage. You're best off maximizing both.

    Quote:
    9. Do you have any ideas regarding how changes could be made to close any gap that might exist in performance?
Normalize +resistance set bonuses in IOs (possibly reducing the total number of available bonuses, doing something like making the bonuses into +Lethal/Negative/Cold, +Smash/Fire/Energy, +Toxic/Psychic to reduce the overly dispersed nature of the bonuses).

    Quote:
    10. Did I miss anything that should be addressed relating to the topic?
You should have called DOOOM at least once, possibly including the use of the term "F2P" as well, just to be sure.

Force of habit. The less "wild" aggro, the less likely a squishy gets caught in the crossfire. I have plenty of experience with "strong" Brutes or Scrappers that get too much aggro...then go and hug the squishies (or alternatively, a squishy goes to try and save them) and get said squishies killed in the process because they bit off more than they could handle. That isn't to say all of them do that, but they are out there.

And to be honest, I wouldn't give a flying rat's *** about your bruised ego if it meant one of the other support teammates stayed alive longer.

If you're not aiming for any specific set bonuses with three slots for Stamina, leave it at two slots (assuming two level 50 generic IOs) and put another into Health. With that, you can slot the Numina unique and get a net bonus to your total recovery.

While they're "fan" projects and not official, I'd say the game would be woefully incomplete without their work. When Red Tomax's first solid Hero Designer arrived, the game truly became interesting to me since I could finally quantify progress and not end up with having to rely on the more or less random nature of the in-game information.

Been tempted to supply guides to the various high-level TFs (mainly because the guides that used to be included in the STF/LRSF entries made me want to grind my teeth when I read them--and finding the guides on the forums here can be an annoyance) but other than some minor misinformation, the new "Editor's Notes" are more or less satisfactory.
  23. All AS attacks are going to deal the "same" damage. However, the damage type will make a large difference. Negative energy isn't commonly resisted in the game but when it is, it's a doozy (i.e., ghost-type mobs such as CoT lieutenants). Someone had a breakdown of resistances as they're encountered throughout the game in a handy spreadsheet but I believe that's since been lost to time (I believe the original was by someone named "Culex" or something to that extent). Energy kind of suffers the same effect but overall, you're not really going to notice it in the long run--at least as compared to a pure smashing or lethal AS. After that, it just comes down to what you want out of the primary.

No secondary is going to really "improve" your AS directly (well, technically you could get yourself killed and use the bonus from Resurgence in Willpower but there are obvious drawbacks to that method) but for an indirect advantage, look to Electric Armor or Super Reflexes for their +20% increased recharge auto powers.
