Magnet Releasing has unveiled a brand new theatrical poster for the highly-anticipated indie film Monsters, which will be released in theaters on October 29. Click on the new poster image below to access our poster gallery for this new film, directed by Gareth Edwards, and you can read the full synopsis below.

The breakout hit of this years SXSW, Gareth Edwards' groundbreaking new film is as much a poignant contemporary romance as it is an epic science fiction adventure. Shot with just a five person crew and a cast of two, Gareth Edwards' team traveled through Guatemala, Belize and Mexico, finding and utilizing their locations and supporting actors as they went. The result is a film as cutting edge as it is classically composed, as emotionally satisfying as it is visually stunning, and the bold announcement of a major new talent.

Six years ago NASA discovered the possibility of alien life within our solar system. A probe was launched to collect samples, but crashed upon re-entry over Central America. Soon after, new life forms began to appear and grow. In an effort to stem the destruction that resulted, half of Mexico was quarantined as an INFECTED ZONE. Today, the American and Mexican military still struggle to contain the massive creatures... Our story begins when a jaded US journalist (Scoot McNairy) begrudgingly agrees to find his bosses daughter, a shaken American tourist (Whitney Able) and escort her through the infected zone to the safety of the US border.

Monsters comes to theaters October 29th, 2010 and stars Whitney Able, Scoot McNairy. The film is directed by Gareth Edwards.

Didn't they make something similar to this years ago? Though to be fair Evolution was probably one of the worst comedies ever made by man so maybe that's a bad example lol

Terrific news to report from the land of common-sense television programming commissioning: the BBC's fresh take on Sherlock has been renewed, with fresh adventures set to arrive next year.

The news was broken by the show's co-creator, Steven Moffat, and producer, Sue Vertue, appearing on BBC Breakfast yesterday morning. "There will be more," Vertue revealed, although exactly how many had yet to be determined. As she told the show, "We're having a meeting to talk about how many and when."

Given the ratings, and the critical success that Sherlock has enjoyed, a fresh run was surely a no-brainer, although given Steven Moffat's work schedule in the coming year with a new series of Doctor Who to oversee, it's not clear how involved he could be this time. Sherlock was conceived over two years ago, when he didn't, at that time, have 14 episodes a year of Who to manage.

Not that the show's other co-creator, Mark Gatiss, seems to have too much more time on his hands, although it's been suggested that he's going to be taking more of a hands-on role than Moffat.

It was also confirmed by Moffat that future episodes of Sherlock would keep the 90 minute format. We'd also hope that they keep Paul McGuigan on board to direct them. You might have guessed by now, but we were big fans of what he did with the show.

More news on Sherlock as we get it, and hopefully we can have a handful of new adventures for next summer. That'd be just champion.

That's awesome news. I've been watching this new programme since it started and so far I'm loving it. Once again the Grand Moff has proven just how awesome he is. But it proves the point even more though that he's FAR better at WRITING stories (in my opinion) then overseeing the whole production. I really think for instance the next series of Who he should hire someone to basically take over helping him run the day to day operations of producing Who and concentrate more on writing for the show where his true talent lies.

Former "Lost" stars Michael Emerson and Terry O'Quinn are shopping around for ideas for a TV show together.

According to The Associated Press, Emerson says they both want something more lighthearted and that the show can acknowledge their "age and frailty." Emerson says he envisions a show where, if their characters get hit in the face, they "don't get up for a month."

The 55-year-old Emerson and 58-year-old O'Quinn are both up for best supporting actor Emmy Awards.

Heat Vision has confirmed rumors that Blake Lively and Scarlett Johansson are the frontrunners for the lead role in director Alfonso Cuaron's Gravity. Lively, who stars opposite Ryan Reynolds in Green Lantern, and Johansson, who is married to Reynolds, would be joining Robert Downey Jr. in the sci-fi drama.

The trade says that Johansson and Lively has both tested for the role of a female astronaut lost in space and a decision is expected to be made within the next week or two.

In the film, co-written by Alfonso and his brother Jonas, astronauts repairing the Hubble telescope are hit with an avalanche of satellite junk. The surviving astronaut must fight her way back to Earth, where she hopes to reunite with her daughter.

The project was originally set up at Universal as a vehicle for Angelina Jolie, but when it moved to Warner Bros., Jolie left the project.

Johansson starred with Downey Jr. in Iron Man 2 earlier this year.

With Green Lantern now completed and Deadpool on its way, Mr. Ryan Johansson has his plate full with new and upcoming projects. Looks as if Ryan is going to be filling his house up with even more comic books as Dark Horse's R.I.P.D. is on the fast track to feature filming.

LA Times has the newsie news:

The Dark Horse comic R.I.P.D. would seem like perfect movie fodder: It's popular, it involves juicy crimes and concerns people long dead who are still able to dole out justice. Oh, and Ryan Reynolds, he of rapidly growing fanboy credibility, is attached to star in it.

Universal, which has a deal with the publisher, thinks it's a good idea too, and has been trying fervently to get the movie going. The film, whose title stands for Rest In Peace Department, centers on two dead cops with dark secrets who patrol the underworld.

Will MGM ever get to roar again? That's a big question in Hollywood. My former employer is looking to find someone, anyone to help with its huge debt and get its Bond and Hobbit movies back on track.

The Wall Street Journal has the latest on who the next potential buyer could be. I'm copying the entire article here because you have to be a suibscriber to read the entire thing:

Spyglass Entertainment is nearing a deal to run Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Inc. once the beleaguered film studio finishes restructuring a roughly $4 billion debt load later this summer, said people familiar with the matter.

MGM's creditors have hammered out financial details with Spyglass co-heads Gary Barber and Roger Birnbaum and the two sides have been negotiating the makeup of MGM's new board, they said.

Messrs. Barber and Birnbaum would run MGM as co-CEOS when the studio exits a streamlined bankruptcy later this year under the plan. A group of hedge funds that now control MGM's fate have identified the pair as their best choice for reversing the ailing studio's fortunes.

Under the plan, Spyglass—which co-financed recent releases including "Dinner for Schmucks" and "Invictus"— would merge older parts of its film library with the MGM library. The Spyglass founders would receive a 4% ownership stake in the reorganized MGM and creditors would forgive all of MGM's debt for the bulk of the restructured studio's new equity.

A deal could be done as soon as this week, the people said. MGM plans to peg the value of the reorganized company at $1.9 billion.

Once in bankruptcy, MGM could entertain other deals under an obligation to maximize its value for all creditors. MGM's creditors have left open pairing with other studio rivals, including Summit Entertainment and Lions Gate Entertainment Corp. Both have made recent overtures, the people said.

MGM, Summit and Lions Gate declined to comment. Spyglass couldn't be reached for comment.

A merger with Summit, the studio behind the profitable "Twilight" franchise, has appeal because the company is flush with cash and MGM needs funds for new movies. MGM's coming "Hobbit" films, prequels to the "Lord of the Rings" trilogy, are budgeted at more than $500 million combined.

Hedge-fund creditors also see promise in a deal with Lions Gate but are wary of potential complications from the studio's activist investor, Carl Icahn.

MGM's creditors would have to relinquish anywhere from a quarter to half of the new studio's equity in deals with Summit or Lions Gate. The hedge funds invested heavily in MGM's debt have resisted getting too diluted in any deal. Creditors holding two-thirds of MGM's debt must sign off on a deal for a bankruptcy judge to approve it. MGM hopes to limit its stay in bankruptcy court to about two months.Once exiting bankruptcy, MGM would try to raise a new credit line of about $400 million to $500 million to finance new movies.

Spyglass executives are negotiating a "break-up" fee should the creditors choose another partner, suggesting a deal is imminent.

MGM hopes to file the "prepackaged" bankruptcy sometime in mid-September, when its latest waiver on debt payments expires, the people said. J.P. Morgan Chase & Co., a major MGM creditor, is working on providing between $150 million and $200 million in debtor-in-possession financing to steer the studio through bankruptcy, one of these people said.

A Spyglass deal would end a year-long drama over MGM, well known for its roaring lion logo. The studio put itself up for sale last year but failed to garner bids high enough to placate creditors. Time Warner Inc. bid only about $1.5 billion.

Any deal wouldn't likely include MGM's top film executive, Mary Parent, a Hollywood veteran brought aboard in April 2008 to jumpstart the studio's production. She developed 20 high-profile film projects, including a remake of "Robocop" and a planned "Three Stooges" movie, but only four got made.

MGM's film library, which boasts the James Bond franchise, suffered big cash-flow declines amid the dearth in new films. Ms. Parent and other studio executives pushed a plan in which creditors would raise about $1 billion to bankroll new movies, an idea they dismissed.

A committee of MGM's most influential creditors met with Spyglass executives in New York in mid-July to hammer out deal terms, the people said. Talks intensified in recent days.

MGM's new board would have nine members, including Messrs. Barber and Birnbaum, one of the people said. The rest would include a mix of independents and hedge-fund representatives.

Messrs. Barber and Birnbaum of Spyglass would get a slice of MGM's new equity for combining a slate of older films such as "The Sixth Sense" and "Seabiscuit" with MGM's library. The parties agreed to value Spyglass's older films at about $80 million, the people said. Private-equity firm Cerberus Capital Management has a significant stake in Spyglass.

Over time, the Spyglass executives would be able to increase their MGM stake if the studio's performance improves or if the company is sold, the people said.

C'mon MGM, sell this puppy! We want another Bond movie! (I'm over The Hobbit already.)

    Original Article Link
Well I hope SOMETHING happens soon in either case. There are tons of properties that MGM owns that will NEVER see the light of day again unless something is worked out in regards to the studio. MGM would be foolish to sell off these properties because if they ever do get back on their feet they'll need guaranteed money makers to help bolster their revenue and refill their coffers.

Bloody-Disgusting has gotten a hold of the first plot details from Kevin Smith's new horror film, Red State. Take a look at the first logline for the film below.

"In the film a group of kids encounter a crazed preacher (based on Fred Phelps, founder of the Westboro Baptist Church) who gives a whole new meaning to the term 'extreme fundamentalism.'"

Michael Parks will star in the film and, as we reported last week, Dermot Mulroney, Michael Angarano, Kyle Gallner, Stephen Root and Melissa Leo were also in talks to star in the film as well.

The site reports that filming will start sometime later this month, but last week Smith himself revealed on his Twitter account, that filming was scheduled to start on September 22.

When it comes to the timely presentation of movies after they hit video and DVD, the landscape is changing. At one point, it was all about Showtime and HBO, and which channel could negotiate to present movies first in the post-video window? Now Netflix is a major player on the scene, with deals like one with Ryan Cavanaugh’s Relativity Media undercutting the old cable networks’ dominance on post-DVD movie presentation.

Now upstart pay movie channel Epix is working on a deal to give Netflix five-year exclusive online rights to the three studios partnered with Epix: Paramount, Lionsgate and MGM.

OK, sure, rights to MGM might not mean much soon. But what this does mean is that Netflix would take one more step closer to becoming a be-all destination for streaming movies. Or, as the LA Times says, Netflix would be “a potentially formidable competitor to Time Warner’s dominant pay channel Home Box Office, which has movies from Warner Bros., 20th Century Fox and Universal Pictures.”

With this deal, Netflix would have streaming rights for Disney, Sony, Relativity Media, Paramount, Lionsgate and MGM.

Unfortunately, this still doesn’t mean that movies would start streaming right after they hit DVD. That old exclusivity window for DVD availability is going to remain for a while. But what it does mean is that more films will be coming to the Netflix streaming service more quickly. The company’s online catalog has grown exponentially in the last couple years, both in terms of quality and quantity. You could do nothing but stream films from Netflix and at the rate of one per day still have a year or two worth of classics to watch. Frankly, the Netflix streaming service is a bonanza of riches right now. How long will it last at the very low monthly price point it currently holds? ($8.99 per month gets you all-access to streaming media.)

But this deal isn’t done, and there may be some resistance. The cable providers Epix is partnered with may not want the company licensing films to Netflix, as it would make the Epix channel less attractive to Netflix subscribers.

    Original Article Link
The only thing I'm thinking about is they must have some serious way of stopping the customer from ripping the stream because this would make burning your own DVD's of films that much easier. I'm gonna have to look into this a bit deeper.

Something odd is up at Weta Workshop, that New Zealand special effects and prop company best known for helping Peter Jackson bring his Lord of the Rings trilogy to life. Something that's getting us excited. Could it mean that The Hobbit is finally back on track?

According to The Noldor Blog, the Weta Cave, a mini-museum the company runs, has just closed to the public for its annual refurbishing. But what's the big deal, if this happens every year?

    The big deal is this:

♦ The closing will last five days, rather than the two days it was closed last year.

♦ Lord of the Rings/Hobbit-related sets and props are currently being taken out of storage, and there is "a certain urgency about it."

♦ The Weta Cave will also be closed for a "secret" private function on Aug. 21, a Saturday.

♦ All of the contacts of this Wellington, New Zealand, Lord of The Rings tour guide "seem to think an announcement is imminent."

Now, all of this could be coincidental, and that private function in two weeks could merely be the expensive birthday party of some Rings fan with deep pockets. But it's enough to make us start dreaming that the problems holding up The Hobbit are on the verge of being resolved.

    What do you think?

Starring Jason O'Mara, "Terra Nova" tells a group of scientists from 2149 who travel back 85 million years to prehistoric Earth to try to save the planet that is dying from development and overcrowding.

He was never going to be king and he wished that he could, so all of his stuff comes from wanting to please his father... But it was rooted in that. I found the duality of that, the sort of he's a villain, he has a lot of fun, he's a mischievous prankster but at the same time he's in deep, deep pain."

Then, when it came to properly getting in tune with Loki, Branagh gave Hiddleston some homework.

"... He said to have a look at Peter O'Toole in two specific films: The Lion in Winter and Lawrence of Arabia. I mean, two magnificent performances. What's interesting about The Lion in Winter is he plays King Henry and what's beautiful about his performance is that you see how damaged he is. And there's a rawness. It's almost as if he's living with a layer of skin peeled away. He's grandiose and teary, and in a moment, by turns, hilarious and then terrifying. What we wanted was that kind of emotional volatility. He said, "Just have a look. Don't necessarily..." It's a different acting style. It's not quite the same thing. What's fascinating is to go back and watch an actor as great as O'Toole and head for those high hills."

"Thor", starring Chris Hemsworth, barges into theaters everywhere on May 6th, 2011.

Ehhhh. I've got mixed feelings about this film. On one hand it does look pretty cool and I think Chris Hemsworth looks spot on as Thor. However Portman while a good actress only truly shines when she has the right part. Otherwise she often seems out of place in a film like she's just not the right person cast for the role. I'm hoping that isn't the case for this film.

Oh and btw since I've been gone so long I'm not sure if any of you ever got a chance to see the Comic-Con footage of the Thor movie. If you haven't then I was able to save it to file when it was leaked on the net before the studios came down on the web page and made them take it off. Disney has released the theatrical release dates for two of their upcoming films that will be hitting theaters in 2012.

First up is Tim Burton's big screen version of his Frankenweenie short. That one is expected to drop on March 9, 2012. Be sure to mark that on your calendar now. No getting married on that day, you silly kids!

The second announcement was the release date for the highly anticipated John Carter of Mars, based off of the popular science fiction books about a man who goes to Mars and ends up with a hot martian chick (see pic above). That film is set to launch on June 8th, 2012.

Normally I wouldn't bother posting release date news. Especially since the movies aren't coming out for two years. But I know how you readers like to plan ahead.

Well the Burton film doesn't exactly ring my bells. But the John Carter does sound interesting and I did enjoy the books. Let's just hope the Martian chicks are hot in the film. Course I can't exactly jump for joy since the film is 2 YEARS away from being released lol
