BBC orders more Sherlock

Terrific news to report from the land of common-sense television programming commissioning: the BBC's fresh take on Sherlock has been renewed, with fresh adventures set to arrive next year.

The news was broken by the show's co-creator, Steven Moffat, and producer, Sue Vertue, appearing on BBC Breakfast yesterday morning. "There will be more," Vertue revealed, although exactly how many had yet to be determined. As she told the show, "We're having a meeting to talk about how many and when."

Given the ratings, and the critical success that Sherlock has enjoyed, a fresh run was surely a no-brainer, although given Steven Moffat's work schedule in the coming year with a new series of Doctor Who to oversee, it's not clear how involved he could be this time. Sherlock was conceived over two years ago, when he didn't, at that time, have 14 episodes a year of Who to manage.

Not that the show's other co-creator, Mark Gatiss, seems to have too much more time on his hands, although it's been suggested that he's going to be taking more of a hands-on role than Moffat.

It was also confirmed by Moffat that future episodes of Sherlock would keep the 90 minute format. We'd also hope that they keep Paul McGuigan on board to direct them. You might have guessed by now, but we were big fans of what he did with the show.

More news on Sherlock as we get it, and hopefully we can have a handful of new adventures for next summer. That'd be just champion.

That's awesome news. I've been watching this new programme since it started and so far I'm loving it. Once again the Grand Moff has proven just how awesome he is. But it proves the point even more though that he's FAR better at WRITING stories (in my opinion) then overseeing the whole production. I really think for instance the next series of Who he should hire someone to basically take over helping him run the day to day operations of producing Who and concentrate more on writing for the show where his true talent lies.

BBC One on Sunday nights. Not sure what time since I don't actually watch it since I'm here in the states. I have to procure it via... alternative means

It was on at 9pm on Sundays, and was awesome but ended on an almighty cliffhanger. Great news on it being renewed for a second series.

Always remember, we were Heroes.

I've been watching too, like both of the actors...definitely good to see it come back.

I watched all three episodes (hey, being in the UK does have its advantages) and I love it. To be fair, it's Moffatt and Gatiss who is a far better writer than he is actor IMHO.

There's only two problems with it so far. Watson, apart from being very good in the first episode, really has little to contribute to the drama. Sherlock is always upstaging him, demeaning him and I can't find any good reason for why Sherlock keeps him around.

Secondly... the main bad guy, revealed in the third episode. Why!? Why do that to one of the greatest villains ever!? Why give him The Master treatment? I so much prefer a cruel, calculating villain to the constant flow of 'nutters' we seem to be seeing on TV at the moment. Ooooh, be scared of me because I'M CRAAAAAAAAZZZYYY!!!! No, I'd rather not thanks. You don't scare me in the slightest. Main let down of what so far could be a brilliant series.

Hopefully they'll correct these oversights when the new series rolls around.

Beware! Spoilers in this post:

I utterly hated that they bring Moriarty into it so early. Holmes is a fantastic character in his own right and doesn't need this nemesis in every last adaptation he's in. It's my pet peeve for Holmes adaptations in general, and my only major gripe for the new show. Holmes is an ever-interesting flawed hero, but Moriarty is a dull vanilla villain. He wasn't and isn't needed.

As for the guy who portrayed him, not at all convinced. I definitely think he went too nutty, a shame when Cumberbatch is playing Holmes so well as a believable sociopathic genius. I just don't buy that this Moriarty could reach the position he did in the criminal underworld and be that kooky at the same time. I felt he should've been much more subdued, closer in attitude to the awesome Cumberbatch's Holmes in demeanour. Of course this is not necessarilly the sole fault of the actor, but it felt like a mistake.
