Lol. Well actually... I 'stealthed' a mission yesterday on a fm/shield with ninja run. She only had 24% def to all but I just turned the taunt aura off (regen doesn't have one anyway) and ran past mobs, took some shots on the way jumping over mobs but a scrapper can survive that, so only recall friend is needed .

    Ice Melee?

I agree with dave_p, although I have issues with Ice Melee (cmon, give GIS Clobber numbers for dmg, end and rech, and Frozen Aura 'deserves' Footstomp radius).

It would be a great AoE set with mitigation in Ice Patch and the only scrapper set with a hold (Right? Or is there another? I can only recall fear in Touch of Fear, Stuns in MA and Thunderstrike and KD in other sets). Hey you could hav two holds with the epic one!

    Lets Talk /ELA

I won't analyze your build because you didn't post the data chunk (and the formatting is all messed up), but I have a DB/Elec planned (lvl 24 atm) - she's a scrapper but numbers are basically the same for resists and all, although the power order is a bit different for scrappers (basically they switched Energize with LReflexes).

35% melee def with 30% s/l (which helps against lots of ranged, and my energy res is capped anyway since DOs lol) and 20% ranged / nrg / neg defenses. Plus 67.5% recharge.

I had to gut regeneration for that, but I'm happy with all the extra maxhp I managed to get:

Ooooo that'd be awesome. Unlimited end, capped defs with a few IOs, double damage auras, taunt aura, I bet it would be a great farmer too. I'd love a fire/ice scrapper because my Ice Armor/Fire tanker is the only one I find the damage acceptable.. Now on a scrapper, wow...

When the set got ported to tanks, the set really didn't work. The mez effects that bought scrappers time to launch attacks would break aggro trains and make mob control difficult on tanks.
Wrong. I have pseudo tanked countless times on my DM/DA an Spines/DA scrappers with no defense, never kept jumping in and out of mobs. A DA Tanker also does this just fine, better than fire. Mez auras don't get in the way of aggro control in Tankers, they have a taunt component. A DA Tanker is the only one that can have THREE permanent auras with a taunt component, +13.5s Taunt (mag 4) PvE only - according to CoD. Add end drain protection, very high psi resistance, the huge heal and +perception and you can tank better than a Fire/Elec Armor. Mobs wandering because of Oppressive Gloom will still be taunted, and the other auras cause no scatter. CoFear makes mobs freeze, it helps aggro control more than a damage aura.

    Quote:
Although, as mentioned, Oppressive Gloom and Cloak of Fear's mez effects tend to work against Taunt.
Wrong again. CoF doesn't work against taunt because mobs stand still and OG only causes a bit of scattering while mobs are still suffering from the 13.5s mag 4 taunt. The taunt effect lasts almost double the mez effect, and mez only work on minions.

    Quote:
To compensate for this massive amount of aggro holding power, Ice Armor is one of the only sets that can reach soft-cap to smashing lethal on it's own: [url]http://zerias.blogspot.com/2008/04/coh-ice-mace-build.html
Ice can soft cap to s/l/e/ne with just SOs (assuming weave and CJ and EA from 5 mobs). But besides /SR scrappers which can almost cap everything with SOs too (43.9% with CJ/Weave/Maneuvers), what's the problem with scrapper ice armor? They'd have the same aggro holding potential as shields and invul who have one taunt aura on scraps (since an Ice armor scrapper wouldn't have a taunt component in icicles), and shields has no dull pain/hoarfrost.

    Quote:
There's a very good reason why the Defense Only Scrapper / Brute Set, Super Reflexes, gets elude, scaling resists as HP drops, and no taunt aura. The Brute Defense Only set Energy Aura also lacks any taunt aura, although Energy Drain contains a taunt component.
Partially wrong. Brutes' SR have a Taunt aura in Evasion.

    Quote:
It's also generally accepted by the Brute Players that I talk to that the defense only sets Energy Aura and Super Reflexes need IO help.
SR scraps/brutes can easily reach 40% def to all with SOs without making unusual power picks (meaning the 'basics' CJ and Weave) - and if you add maneuvers you're at 43.9% def to all. A 40% defense scrapper is damn fine to play. Shields don't come close to that with SOs and they have a taunt aura just like Ice, plus Chilling Embrace would help a scrapper more than shield's AAO in suvivability because of the -rech component, both have -dam (and the -dam buff is double on CI compared to AAO even on tankers, -7% vs -14%). Also, shield have low defenses compared to other defensive armors on all ATs, Ice would have better def values on a scrapper than shields.

And except SR, all defensive armors on Brutes/Tankers/Stalkers need IO help to softcap (well even SR with CJ+Weave+Maneuvers need an extra 1.1%), it's not like Ice Armor would be gimped because it would need some IOs to sofcap a scrapper.

So while I understand the devs may want to keep Ice Armor to Tankers like they may want to keep Ninjitsu exclusive to Stalkers, I fail to see why it wouldn't work.

  7. Xhacker, try that, worked for some ppl with Intel GPUs, I had no crashes on my Intel 945 card, but my shader option is still greyed out, as many other users even after the patch, but this solved some people's crashing issues:

    1. right click on CoH/Cov shortcut
    2. click on properties
    3. click on shortcut tab at top
    4. go to target window "C:\Program Files\City of Heroes\CohUpdater.exe"
    5. after the last " press space bar once
    6. enter following code exactly -useTexEnvCombine
    7. click on apply then ok.

What intel chipset do you guys use? I use a 945. You can check it here: http://www.intel.com/support/graphics/detect.htm
  9. I've been soloing at 0/x3/bosses with my fm/shield since 22 (SOs) and now at +1/x3 or +2/x3 (level 31) depending on enemy group. The reason I do fine with the low defs (I think around 24% at now with the steadfast unique and PF, unfortunately CJ will be my 49 power pick because fm/sd/blaze is tight as hell) is that when you solo in this setting (more players) inspirations rain.

Since you're elec/shield it may be a good idea to try that but with no bosses.
  10. Working ok here, the last time Mids really bugged for me, I reinstalled it, but I uninstalled it before. Did you uninstall before reinstalling?
  11. One way to check if your Intel driver is up to date for you system and OS is by using the Intel web utility:

I'd also just very speculatively wonder if maybe the fact you're running on a Mac has something to do with it. Yes I see you're doing the Bootcamp deal but perhaps that has some impact. I'm no Mac expert but I have to wonder. But I wish you luck. If I knew a fix I'd be happy to offer it.
Well back there is an 'family' of Intel cards, the ones with the most issues seem to be the 965 and 945. The 965 so far seems to have the shadows option enabled after the patch and no shader still, but that's it (from what I've read here and ingame), so I know the fix hasn't worked 'perfectly'.

The 945 (mine) seems to be in almost the same boat as pre-patch (I have the impression the world gfx are better but the toons/npcs/enemies are still very plain looking), although surprisingly I haven't crashed once in the game since i17 (not that I crashed a lot before). All I can say is that I go to other macintosh forums and have never seen complaints about software, games or not, that are problematic just because of Bootcamp. I have run many trials of games that are supported by my card via bootcamp with no issues (windows clients of LoTRO, Perfect World International, several other non-MMORPGs I don't remember because it's been a while).

Of course I don't run the CoX Mac OS X client because the card is specifically not supported there, but even in Macs with supported GPUs people report lots of various bugs in the forums over there.

And there's no 'complicated fix' to update stuff on macs, Apple does it all via software update, Macs are really simple that way.

You're right, I should wait and contact. I was too p... off yesterday because I spent the day trying 'everything' and as you know it gets on one's nerves (like when you have to reinstall Windows on a PC then it fails, then you have to defrag or format the hd, maybe configure BIOS, then try again, these technical stuff that always take long).

Thank for wishing me luck, it's sad to play a game for so long (2 years is very long for me for a game) and have it completely change for you overnight.

Anyway, there also seem to be a lot of people with all kinds of crash, not all video-related. I have been told there were buggier issue releases, it's just that since i9 when I started I never had a single problem, so it kinda got me by surprise .

The issue that got my goat was asking for a refund. My BF is a restaurant manager, and is constantly regailing me with stories about snotty customers demanding refunds and such. And, frankly, I find it disgusting. We have had long discussions about how attitudes like that would never fly in any other market.

For example, say someone goes to Kohl's and buys a shirt, goes home, wears the shirt for a week and then returns it demanding a refund AND a new shirt. The manager is unlikely to comply, especially when he notices it is stained and hasn't been washed.

I apologize for my somewhat arrogant and flippant reply.
No problem I think I didn't express myself well. I didn't mean to ask for a refund of my purchase of the game nor the time I played, but for the three months I have paid (only in case the bug lasts, but I know I won't get any). In my head I was thinking that, it probably sounded that 'I want all my monies I ever spent back!'. That would be abusive since I played and enjoyed this game for 2 years and some (still do, although I hate my gfx now).

I got refunds for a car and a computer, but those were different cases. Both were defective from the moment I bought, the car mechanics (and techs from the computer store) spent months telling me they had no idea what was wrong, replaced various parts on both products and etc, till I convinced the managers to give me my money back, but then again I suffered with the products flaws for the entire time since the purchase, and for months, particularly aggravating in the car's case since the computer was usable... for half an hour tilll it froze and I had to restart lol. Never asked for a refund in a restaurant tho, never saw a reason

You probably don't know, but we have a great 'consumer defense' code here in Brazil so if I made a scandal on a restaurant I'd get a refund even if the service/food were awesome, same for the shirt case you mentioned, but I never did that unless I found a defect in a piece of clothing for example, but then I didn't wear them for a week or so lol.

I'm much more interested in having my issues fixed (after all I love this game), a free month wouldn't be bad if this issue persist for longer than 1 month, but I know it ain't happening from the answers.

But the way I felt about my game changing so much overnight was like I got a perfectly working product and it suddenly started to function badly, that's why I asked if there was a precedent for free months and refunds. But as I said, the refund thing was only for the pre-paid months (again, in case the bug is still present in 1-2 months, I can wait 2 weeks or so to see how they work it out). But I guess i didn't express that well.

And tbh I want to call attention to my problem (and lots of other ppl, dunno why they don't post about it since I received five PMs after I complained on other thread and ingame buddies who don't come to the forums are having the same issues, I'm not exaggerating to try to sound that I am not the only one having these issues).

Anyway, I think I did enough complaining already, my mood was really bad earlier because I spent so much time installing/uninstalling modded drivers and other stuff and rebooting a lot to try to make things work.

Well off to sleep now. I understand you may have been bothered because when I read my OP it really looks like I wanted all the cash I ever spent in this game back.

I never came here because I never had problems and don't have knowledge to help on things like ATI/nvidia related stuff which are the most common here, or answer if some video card will run Bloom and etc.

Anyway, who knows what's happening. I knew je_saist was rude already so I wasn't surprised, but Thirty_Seven seemed nice from other posts I saw in other forums.

But it's the internets, where people are rude to you for no significant reason, I'm kinda used to it (but not in the CoX forums to be honest, I think it's the first time people are being rude to me here, and as you can see I have a lot of posts lol).

My question about the refund has been answered in a polite manner unlike you did, thank you. Or do you mean people can't ask stuff in the forums like 'omg how does this power work?' or 'Why am I missing my attacks i slotted 6 dmg in fire ball'. What do you answer, 'go read the power description or City of Data nubcake'?. I just try to help, this is a game, people don't read everything related to it. You can see my post history outside of the tech forums, I never said 'DON'T POST THIS HERE' like you did so rudely. If you don't like my thread, don't post on it or ignore me.

Obviously it's my responsibility for a game to work for me. It would be my responsibility if I tried to install Fallout 3 here and found the hardware isn't up to the game, I wouldn't have the right to complain.

Now playing a game for two years smoothly and enjoying it on a supported video card (remember i play on windows), and having its graphics turn to crap because of a patch overnight... How's that my fault? Everything is up to date here, I always update my system and drivers, nothing more I can do.

Sure show your e-peen and all if it helps your self esteem, but I reserve the right to not agree with you since it's not a new game that I've been testing for just a few days.

I think it would be great if they extended support to the GMA 950 as I have a friend who uses it to play when he does. Still, that is definitely caveat emptor.

Also, I think they should offer game time on a per-user basis, but I am not sure your situation calls for it, since you can play on unsupported tech.

Still, good luck getting things resolved.
Sermon, bootcamp is just running Windows on an Intel Core duo computer that just happens to be a mac, not running Windows simultaneously with the Mac OS X system (which I can do too via Parallels or VMWare but of course a game won't run well with two systems booted at the same time). To use bootcamp, I have to reboot from Mac OS X to Windows. I can run Linux here too if I want and it performs just the same as any intel core duo PC.

Bootcamp isn't exactly another platform, all the programs I ever ran in my winxp partition worked, never had issues of any kind (Office, games that make heavy use of DirectX like Perfect World International, LoTRO). So it's like I'm on a Windows computer using the windows client.

And G. Falcon affirms: 'Please note that if you are using an Intel GMA 950 video card, that card is not supported by the City of Heroes Macintosh client.
This is noted on the City of Heroes Macintosh Edition product page, as well as on the NCsoft Store.'

I don't use the Macintosh client, I use the windows XP client. I tested the mac client once out of curiosity (because I knew the intel gma wasn't supported from the beginning on the Mac OS X client) and it really does not work with my card. My guess is that the system reqs are higher because unlike the WoW mac client it's emulated via transgaming - so it's a slideshow even on minimum gfx settings, toons' heads and legs missing depending on the costume, several scenario flaws - while on the winXP client, since 2007, I run smoothly with world detail at high, char detail very high, aniso filtering 2x/smooth, shader low with world bumpmaps, etc. Never had to tone down settings on rikti raids or grandville (the usual problematic areas for a lot of people) even when half the team was complaining about framerate dropping a lot.

Partially correct. He wrote a lot of plain stupid stuff and assumed things wrongly.

Basically he agreed with me when I wrote that at least 70% of the problems are solvable because lots of users don't update their drivers properly, ok that's probably correct.

Then saying my card is 'mocked', ok, I don't care, I like how my game looked and it's totally unrelated to the question (which was answered, about possibility of free time and refunds). It's not like I'm asking to play Bioshock 2 and complaining it doesn't support my integrated card, especially since CoX always ran smoothly here since i9 when I started playing.

But... Telling me to shut up because I hadn't filed a bug report without knowing I've been sending all my data to Tex (he asked me for screenies of the game and all the gfx settings, about drivers, card model) since i17 went to test before the patch wasn't exactly correct.

And it was completely rude to call me a liar when I said friends who have Xboxes found my game pretty (btw got a PM from another Intel GPU user who said the same thing, he liked how the game looked on his machine and he owns a PS3, he also added his friends found the game pretty looking but now he'd be embarrassed to show it to anyone).

The troll (je_saist) assumed I was comparing the looks of my Intel board gfx to a PS3 or a Xbox360 (I'm not delusional, and if I wanted to lie and say my game looks like a Xbox360 one I wouldn't have posted a link with my before/after i16/i17 screenies in the OP, as any one with two brain cells would see I'd be making this up) - that was flat out wrong and showed complete lack of reading comprehension, as I made it clear that people with those consoles simply liked how my game looked, nobody said 'OMG it's better than God of War 3'.

He also assumed I thought i17 was released over a month ago when I asked 'what if the bug persists for a month, may they give me a free month or something?'. Lack of reading comprehension #2.

The guy simply decided to insult me with no reason when all I did was ask about refunds/free time because I liked my game's graphics and now I loathe them.

And yeah most of his posts in the archetypes/powers sections I've seen are bad advice or just flat out wrong as Nihili said. I won't elaborate on that because I went back to my usual good mood and I never pick fights over the internet as it's a waste of time, plus it derails the thread.

All in all, I just wanna draw attention to this problem because I know lots of people who play using this specific card (intel 940-965 family) and complained ingame (most of my ingame buddies don't even read the forums) or via PMs to me because they saw my QQing , the GMA950 used to be a very popular vid card in notebooks as you must know, and maybe if possible I can help Tex and company with the data I sent. If I didn't love the game, I'd simply go play another mmo (I tried when I got burned out, but none of them has the fast action this one has - maybe CO, but CO won't run well here and I heard so many bad things about that game, not to mention I didn't like the screenies and videos I saw).
  18. You just need Super speed and a stealth IO for full invisibility, no need to waste power pools (after all on a regen you're getting Hasten anyway right?).

But show your build so we can make suggestions, although I'm not the one to give advice for regen.

    My Spine/elec

Hmm okay you have Power Sink (put a recharge IO in it), but I don't see a goal. Your defenses are negligible till now, I wouldn't bother with slotting boxing right now since your low s/l defense won't make basically any difference and use those slots to get beter values on Lunge (VERY low acc) and L. Field (low end reduction). Then later you can slot boxing if you're going for s/l defense which will only start making a difference after 20%, and really making difference at 25%.

Those Aegis do nothing for you, they only add Fire/Cold def and give some AoE def which should be your last priority.

I added a Kismet +acc in CJ if you can afford it (one trip to dark astoria exemplared to 28 via Ouro should be enough) because you have lowish accuracy in most your attacks, but changed some things around if you like (btw I'd have picked Impale and BU at this level but I didn't change your powers):

Yeah you may be right, I know lot of people who think they know their computers well and when I go check out lots of things are out of date, the computer is full of spyware and viruses.... Even people who work in the field (I'm a health provider, nothing to do with computers).

I always knew how to update stuff and make things run smooth so I never had a problem with this game since I started (i9), even though I'm a mac user since 2000 and use a Windows partition just for this game (CoX Mac client runs badly on my machine, Transgaming emulated crap, not native like WoW's Mac client).

And when I have one it's something the devs don't have a solution yet lol. I spent the day going after those user modded drivers and 'booster' programs.

Still don't feel like playing and crying looking at the game, but at least I'm in a good mood, my football (or as you guys call, soccer) team won in the Libertadores Cup (the South American equivalent to the Uefa Champions League)

    Best Solo combo?

SR has more toggles and higher defenses before you IO to softcap both (and it's easier to softcap Sr of course), and DDR, meaning you won't be affected by defense debuffs which are plentiful in the ITF for example. But /Nin is very cool looking and very survivable because of the heal. I actually only use Blinding Powder out of the ninjitsu 'toys', and only when I remember. /Nin makes for very loose builds compared to /sr.

I like both, I like nin better because I find it's more flexible for building and it looks much cooler. Since my Nin Stalker is EM/Nin, the heal is a wonderful addition.

But as dark melee you will have a heal in your attack chain even as /SR, so it's a great combo. The best for /SR I'd say.

And MG does a full crit, most of its damage is front loaded now after the dark melee buff. The MG crit will double the damage, doing better damage than a crit Total Focus and Energy Transfer in the end since Tf doesn't fully crit and ET's crit is just not losing hp with the attack.

So yeah, AS-Placate-MG will work wonders. As AS-Placate-Siphon in the earlier levels.

I took LONG to lose that habit especially since I barely play melee (except now after my 1yr break, I'm focusing on a scrapper, a brute and a stalker).
  23. BU takes 90 secs to recharge and lasts 10 secs, SD has a 120 sec rech and lasts for 30 seconds, so not much difference. SD is superior for a melee toon (in PvE, because you need mobs around you so... good luck with that in PvP).

It's just that Rage is overpowered. I love it, but it's OP.

Actually Earth, afaik the test server is the same as live now. I didn't file a bug report in test because the minute the Intel patch went to test I logged in there to verify, said my shader options were still greyed out (like Live after i17 and now after the patch) and redname Tex asked me for screenies, my card, driver and I provided him the info (even with a screen of the Intel website checker stating my driver is up to date and showing my card model) and the ingame screens.

    Dear Des,

Thanks Des. I'll keep 1 KB IO. I basically only team except on toons I like soloing (like Stalkers), but even then when I get invites I usually accept them (even on a Stalker you get lots of invites on Freedom, and there's always some teams active in F/Virtue/Justice on Repeat Offenders) except when chasing mayhems for badges (for the vill accolade) because i don't trust doing mayhems with big teams, 3 ppl at most because I can usually handle 3-men spawns if the others screw up.

Reason I'll keep one KB IO on the /DA is, besides the build will be tight even if I end up giving up CoFear, I pseudo tanked a LOT with my DM/DA and the KB was rare. Even on KHTFs, after the others took care of the flying witch spawns who spam Gale I was usually safe handling Mary. Anyhow KHTFs don't matter anymore, maybe I'll do it again once on some of my leveling toons because the 40+ ones have done it several times...
