    Been playing the game about five months now and really loving it. Never played a defender before, as I like my toons to be able to solo when I want to, and also do decent damage. But I've been looking over Mids and suddenly Defenders seem to fit that build more than I thought they did.

    I have three corruptors (all Fire/ ) that I love, but as I started to look at Defender damage (solo) it looked very similar to Corruptor. But the resistances they got were outrageously higher and their defense was even better also.

    (snipped out a bunch of extraneous yack yack) What I'm really looking for is a non Fire toon that can do pretty decent damage, especially AOE, as well as be pretty darn safe. Be able to solo about two thirds of the time, team the other third. Not looking to solo take down AVs, GMs, etc.

    I decided to go with Dark Miasma as my primary as I already have enough stormies (I love the set) and DM looks like it would keep me very safe. But what to pair it with? I want ranged aoe, and ice and archery seemed to both fit that.

    Ice seems to give even more mitigation, one of the least resisted damage types in the game (?). and quite a powerful nuke.

    Archery's big seller for me is a penalty free nuke available very very often.

    I think I'm leaning toward Ice, but have concepts for both of them, has anyone played both sets and really liked one more than the other?

    Here are my potential builds: Both are soft capped ranged def and have decent (ie not quite perma Hasten) recharge.

  2. I have to make this another vote for Fire/Traps. Even if you have another fire corruptor, you won't regret it! Depending what defenses you softcap, you can play it from range and lets the npcs run into your traps, or jump right into melee, toebombing with the best of them.
  3. Our builds are similar in a lot of ways, and since I just posted it for someone else, I thought I would post it here also to throw some ideas out to you. I still twiddle with her, but right now she has:

    Soft cap Melee and Ranged Def, Aoe def at 43.5%

    Perma Mind Link, and Hasten about a half second from perma, with only two purple sets

    Three high damage single target ranged attacks

    Five ranged aoe cones, one ranged radius aoe, and one PBaoe

    A decent mix of Maneuvers, Assault and Tactics, as well as Total Domination and Aura of Confusion

    I know this is not perfect but maybe it will give some ideas, I want the toon to be master of ranged aoe destruction lol

  5. Here is my build to give you some other thoughts. It has about 36%+ ranged def after subtracting some of Stealth, but if I could add the 3% Gladiator you have, it would bring it to 39%+, about five percent more than yours.

    It does not quite have perma Hasten but I only have the confuse purple set, so with your other purple sets in it, it probably would be perma.

    You could probably get two additional slots if you desperately needed them from Stamina, as with the Drain Psyche power slotted plus perma Dom, Endurance shouldn't really be an issue.

    The three procs in Creepers are the three best damaging ones, though one of them is fairly expensive. Guessing that's not an issue with you having the Gladiator 3%.

  6. Hi Laughing Man,

    You will love your Fire/Dark, if two power sets were ever meant to be together, these are it!

    Here is my build. Highlights include:
    Decent haste: My hasten is at 1.34 compared to your 1.26, though my
    build doesn't have any Purple Sets yet.
    Strong Defense: My Ranged defense is at 41%
    Strong Resists: My S/L Resist is at 50%+

    I also tried to really remain 'true' to the powers. For example, I could have gotten another 2 and a half % ranged defense from Blaze, but wanted the extra range in the power instead.

    I went with the Dark APP which works thematically, and also gives me Oppressive Gloom if any minions do get close to me, and a self rez.

    Another highlight is the increased perception IO in Aim, it's really nice when fighting Night Widows with their blackout bombs.

    One downside is Ninja Run as the travel power, but I like Ninja Run so it's not a downside for me. Also, I gain full invisibility from Sprint when I want it with a Stealth IO in it.

    Lastly Black Hole is a really skipable power if you do have others you are interested in.

    This build is endurance intensive so you need Cardiac with it, I don't have that version of Mids on this computer but it's also nice as it increases your range, and your Resists from 50% to closer to 60% if I remember correctly.

  7. The ice pool so drives me bonkers because I want all five powers! At first, mine was like yours on my Plant/Storm, then everyone said, oh no, you've got to have Hibernate, especially if you want to do task forces! And like you, I really wanted the two AOEs, so I've about decided to drop the single target. It's a Sophie's Choice for sure with the Ice APP.

    Your thoughts on Choking Cloud were an eye opener, I wish I had the slots for it on my Ill/Rad. Wouldn't the Lockdown 2 mag hold be extra good on it also? If you can find one slot to take from something else since you do have the space for it.

  8. I think your build is a good job. Just so you are aware, I hear the Gladiator 3% def IO is running about 3 billion inf so I hope that is in your budget.

    I didn't change anything that would lose you your 45% ranged, but just threw a few ideas out there. I put the Perception IO in Aim, as I find it mega nice to have it when fighting Night Widows, etc. Your mileage may varry.

    I threw a proc into Explosive Arrows for more damage, and several procs into Acid Arrow for lots of damage fun. It could probably still use an Acc IO. Additional -Def isn't needed in the power unless you are missing a lot.

    I added the +to Hit IO into Maneuvers. That adds about ten percent accuracy to all powers. A good deal for one slot.

    I fiddled with Oil Slick just a bit, adding more damage.

    These are just ideas that might help some but feel free to ignore any you don't care for.

  9. I couldn't get your datalink to open, but I agree with anonymoose, try partial bodyguard. Since you state you die way more than the pets, start with four on bodyguard and two attacking, if that works out ok, try three and three. See how that works before you go making massive changes to a spec that seems to be working fine for you solo.

    Also, it might help to find a nice supergroup or friends to play with pretty often so you aren't doing pugs. But even in pugs, I've found this game much friendlier than World of Warcraft.

    Lastly, and I know this might sound silly, but dying can sometimes be a big help to your team, if one or more of them have Vengeance or Fallout from /Rad. You could maybe do a macro or keybind to shout out "Avenge me!" as you die, alerting them to use Vengeance.
  10. I had a question for you guys. I have heard that at endgame, Tactics is pretty much required for MMs right now. But I don't have any power I feel like I can part with other than Petrifying Gaze. Will I be gimping Dark Miasma by not having it? It would sure be nice for Malta Sappers etc.

    But Fearsome Stare/Darkest Night/Tarpit should take care of them I'm hoping. Am I right that Petrifying Gaze is the most skipable of the Dark powers (other than Black Hole)? I like the AOE whip attack for dispensing -res and gaining aggro. Plus the extra perception from Tactics would be nice as well.

    Thoughts?

  11. If you want recharge as king, yours looked pretty good, although I think you have to make sure you either have a provoke to tank, though I will check on this, or a good heal like O2, so you are either a tank for your pets or a healer for them.

    If you are showing more recharge off my build than yours, I think it means you clicked Gale so it's little green circle is lit up. I tried to make sure I didn't, but I might have accidentally left it on. Putting force feedback in a power gives it a green circle so you have to be sure it's off to get the real numbers, otherwise it gives you numbers as if Force Feedback were permanent, which it can't be.

    Maybe mine still gave you some ideas. Having a hold in Thunderstorm is nice for example.

    Also, as you selected Provoke, I thought you might be aiming to tankermind so I aimed for soft cap S/L defenses and managed to make it while still getting decent recharge, not the ultimate recharge you got but hopefully it might give you a few ideas and maybe be more effective?

    I kept all the powers you selected except I swaped out Super Jump (I use Ninja Run) and selected the aoe immobilize from the villain pool you selected. It has a lot of uses with your build. I believe it has minus knockback in it, so your tornados can do tons more damage without knocking the enemies away.

    I moved your Force Feedback from Hurricane to Gale. I don't remember why but I seem to recall it's better in Gale and doesn't work well in Hurricane. Since your aoe immobilize has minus knockback, you can aim Gale at a bunch of immobilized foes and have a lot of chances to proc Force Feedback to gain Perma Hasten.

    I put the chance for build up in the 3 thugs since it gives three times as many chances to proc it, but I believe to bonus still applies to all pets.

    Gale and Freezing Rain aren't usually slotted for damage sets as their damage is so low. Freezing Rain is one of your most important powers, and is often slotted with procs as I have done here. It makes it lots of fun!

  14. Here is a build for an Ice/Storm I just did up real fast. It has 34% ranged, and again will need the Cardiac with all the toggles. Lots and lots of storms if you have thoughts about being a weather control character!

    The AOE hold is nice for keeping mobs in your storms.

    Here is my fire/storm corruptor. I will post the build just to give you some thoughts. I tried to get as much ranged defense as I reasonably could, as the build has Oppressive Gloom, Hurricane and Gale all as options if something gets too close.

    My ranged defense is at 35% but you can easily raise it to forty by completeing the Thunderstrike set on Blaze and Lightning Storm, I just wanted the Range on Blaze and the Hold proc on Lightning Storm.

    This spec definitely needs the Cardiac (endurance) because of the Fighting pool toggles and /storm.

  16. Here is a Robot/Traps I just did up. With the force fields from your Protector Bots, you should be around the 45% cap for most defenses.

    So I went with Soul patron pool since its a res shield, plus most especially the 12 radius low-cost auto stun around you (Oppressive Gloom, auto powers are really nice) and the aoe immobilize.

    Your Assault bot and Droid bots should be soft capped too, but if you want to Tank, you can just take Provoke pool instead of Aid Other pool.

    Since the Endurance usage seems fairly decent, Musculature might be the way to go for more robot damage.

    Your build looks very strong, the one thing that worries me a litttle is the Endurance usage, any way to work a couple more slots into Stamina?

    If you don't care for the look of Ice Armor, what do you think of Scorpion Shield (also Def), though you lose Horefrost by going in that direction.

    What do you think about Demon/Storm? I threw this together real fast just now. It does have Ungodly endurance usage. I only have the newest Mids on my other computer so I can't see if Cardiac would help it enough or not. Dropping fighting pool would probably take care of it but also lose some defense/res. Thoughts?

  19. I've been undecisive about Dark Miasma and Traps as well. If you were to match one of those secondaries with Robots and the other with Demons, how would you guys match them up?

    Since Detonator takes damage, etc IOs maybe it will do even more damage if slotted?
  20. This might seem like a dumb question but I'm still kinda new at this: The only way I know to reset the levels you fight at is to leave the mission, go see a Field Analyst or Fortunata sometimes a mile away, then head back to the mission.

    Is there a different way, maybe one you can do anywhere anytime, to reset the difficulty?

    I wish you could set up two difficulties, one for soloing and one for teaming, or can you and I just don't know how?

    Thank you for your help, can't wait to get Hasten at 14 and Force Field Generator at 16.

    Helina has turned 12 and gotten the acid morter, though she hasn't used it much yet since her caltrops/pull/rain of fire still seems to be working really well. I keep thinking I should have gotten Triage Beacon instead as I know that can be situationally useful, and gotten morter at 22.

    At her level, should she be running at higher than +0/+1 that you start out at?

    Also, do you do AE missions? I'm still somewhat new so I've only ever done regular content but I hear the AE tickets can be nice to have, and was wondering if you had any missions or farms you could recommend until I get to 20 and can do tip missions?
  22. It doesn't take Def Debuff sets or there would be even more procs you could slot in!

    I'm working on this for Madre Nature as well. Here is what seems to be established so far:

    If you only have room for two procs, definitely go Impeded Swiftness and Positron Blast.

    Javelin's Volley is a pvp IO and is VERY expensive. My guess is that if you can afford it, it would proc like Positron, and be worth slotting.

    Word is still out on how good Trap of the Hunter and Explosive Strike are. Are they as limited as they were, or were they 'fixed' also to proc a lot like Posi does? My total guess is that Hunter may be better than Strike if they aren't equal. I hope that someone who knows how much these two currently proc can post here.

    If you decide not to slot Javelin's Volley because of the cost, you could do two Acc/Dmg HOs, one Posi, one Imp Swift, one Trap and one Ex Strike.

    I have to have one recharge IO in mine, so my plan was two Acc/Dmg IO, one recharge, one Posi, one Impeded, and one Trap.

    To the original poster: if you can afford the Javelin, and want to go with all five procs, I would go Acc/Dmg for the sixth slot.

    Maybe we can nail down these mysterious Creepers once and for all!

  23. 1) Controllers and Masterminds can both have /Storm so I could see them both having /Insects.

    2) Gonna work on a set of powers for Water/ or /Water with little or no knockback and see what happens.

    Glad I was able to help a little bit. Per your responses to me, everything sounds good except I would really try hard to keep six slots in Freezing Rain, it is Storm's most important power. The way I did mine would be one example.

    Local Man, who is THE genius of controllers, looks like he found you some other slots you can use such as the extra one in fly. His advice is always worth following.

    Getting Phantom Army Perma is always an illusionist's number one job, if they can, so if you aren't having endurance issues, Spirit sounds awesome.
    (However 'close to perma' still is a joy to play!)

  25. My votes go to:

    1) Illusion/Storm/Leviathan - two tornados and a waterspout all out at the same time for lots of chaotic fun

    2) Plant/Storm/Ice - roots lets your tornados not knockback foes so its more team friendly, and every power in plant is situationally useful. Some skip the sleep but it rocks on hero/villain task forces, some skip the regen tree but its nice for AVs and ambushes

    3) Illusion/Radiation/Fire - smooth, like getting a slice of pie at every meal!

    My three favorite powersets in the game are Illusion, Plant and Storm! And Illusion is Controller only so you can't get it on a Dom.
