    Fire / Mental?

I love Fire as an ancillary pool choice. Fire Shield is decent S/L/Fire/Cold resistant. Char is a very good hold, and if you're purpling up and hence have plenty of recharge, it stacks with itself nicely to hold bosses. Also, it can be outfitted with either the Unbreakable Constraint purple set, or Lockdown, both super sets. (Add the Lockdown proc to UC for a 15% of a boss hold on the first hit.) Melt Armour only has a 10 foot radius, but a good duration for using on EBs/AVs, and the -res and -def are small but still appreciable. Bonfire is nice mitigation if you're feeling overwhelmed.

But, they're just neat bonuses, really, because the best reason to take Fire is for Rise of the Phoenix. If your character concept is max damage with a glass jaw, this is the power you want. RotF is ungodly awesome, especially once you hit 50 and debt is no longer an issue. Not so much a self rez, more a mini nuke with a good stun and a 25 foot radius. After set bonuses are included I get a shade over 600 points of damage, plus the mag 4 stun. Frankenslot it for damage/recharge, and it's up every couple of minutes. It gets rid of mez effects, it cancels out the end drain of Inferno -- it's awesome! Plus, I love the animation. See .sig for further details.

For purpling, while World of Confusion is a terrible, terrible power, it's a decent place to stick in a purple set. Coercive Persuasion is a) very cheap for a purple, and b) gives 5% ranged defence. Also, the Contagious Confusion proc is actually a better Confuse power on its own that World of Confusion, and thus makes the power somewhat less awful.
  3. I think one of the biggest factors pushing demand towards the level 50 IOs is limited auction slots. I've been trying to outfit a character with mid-level IOs (nothing too fancy --Thunderstrikes, Positron's Blasts, Siroccos' Dervishes, and one set of Gaussian's). It's taken me weeks, partly because I'm cheap and put in lowish bids, but partly because the very poor supply for some pieces has forced me to place spread bids over a wide range of levels. And while those slots are tied up with bids, I can't use them for selling drops or buying salvage. At times it's been very tempting to say, sod it, I'll just buy the sets at 50.

I wouldn't be at all surprised if a lot of people have tried to buy lower-level sets, and just given up and changed to automatically waiting for 50 and slotting then. Time is money, after all :-)
  4. I managed to log in okay about ten minutes ago.

I was logged in before, then logged out and couldn't get back in. Before I logged out, the chat servers seemed to be down, and they're also back now, so it looks like either they're having a few server problems or there's some unscheduled updating happening.
  5. I think another 12 slots with GR would be nice, especially for those of us in the EU. There are only 4 servers over here. Two are English language, while the German- and French-speaking players only have one native language server each.

    (Or merge the server lists!)
  6. Like S_T, I wouldn't personally find it useful, because I have my own arrangement pattern. (Generally grouped by type, but with a stack in the right hand column of rez, breakfree, blue, green.)

OTOH, if a lot of people would use it and it didn't mess with my system, sure. I guess ideally, in the magical world of free programming effort, I'd really like a system where you could lay out your own preferred pattern on the insp grid, and the game would do it's best to fit your insps to that pattern when you clicked the button.

  9. It found it interesting that the TF revamp comes not long after the lead designer post passing from Positron to War Witch. I remember at the anniversary party in Pocket D, Positron was very much against revamping old content, while War Witch seemed more receptive to the idea. Hopefully, we'll see more of the older content getting a make-over in the future.

The "Gotta have it now's" aren't willing to wait patiently 6 or 7 months to get the item. Especially since they know at any time after he places his bid on the market someone else can place a higher bid then he did and knock him down lower on the market queue.
The part I don't understand about your argument is why the seller would go to the trouble of trying to make an off-market sale when he could simply list the item on the market for the price he wants to sell it at. If he can find a buyer off-market willing to pay his asking price, then surely he can find one far more easily on the market? Why would a complicated, time-consuming, server-locked transaction be preferable to taking 10 seconds to list the item on the market for the price he wants, and then waiting for the next buy-it-nao bidder to come along on any one of 15 servers?

Your argument seems to require the assumption that either a) there would be a mechanism in place with prevents the seller listing higher than the current highest bidder, and/or b) no buy-it-nao bidders will come to the market looking for what they want, and/or c) there exists a substantial pool of people will to pay more off-market than they would be for the same item listed on the market.

Or are you talking only about the price-capped IOs? In that case, off-market sales will happen in exactly the same way under either system, and it's also a rather extreme edge case.

I'm not really so bothered about the retail walk-in sales as I am about sales on Amazon, Play.com, etc. That often where I see new things to try, either as new releases, recommendations, or the 'people who bought this often bought...'. Amazon are very good at nudging buyers towards products, but they won't do that if there's no retail box to nudge them towards.
  14. I don't think it's a fundamentally horrible idea. However, I think the global effect of the TF complete would need to be *very* carefully implemented to avoid annoying more people than it pleased.

People are not very tolerant of having their game disrupted by the actions of others. There are already people who grumble about the Rikti and Zombie invasions interfering with hunt missions. Something like a global AE shutdown would inconvenience a lot of players -- and in that exact case, effectively grant AE-hating players like you a mechanism to grief AE players by organizing rolling TFs. You might not do that personally, but I bet some people would.

Even positive effects can annoy people. There's a thread somewhere about drive-by buffing, which demonstrates very clearly that not everyone appreciates even four minutes of buff.

Speaking as a non-PVPer, I do like the idea of a TF including one PVP mission, although I think gating it by PVP rep would be a bad idea. Frankly, anything in this game which is trying to promote PVP wants as few gates as possible :-) I think a lot of people would HATE the idea, though, and there's a question of whether it would be worth the dev time for a TF which a proportion of the players would avoid on principle. But that's a project management decision, so I'm just going to say, interesting idea. Maybe it could be an option for a TF, with a non-PVP version of the TF accessible also, for people who didn't want to PVP, or who couldn't find an opposing team to play with them.

I think you're maybe confusing Romulus Augustus with Caesar Augustus? The historical Romulus Augustus was (somewhat debatably) the last emperor of the western Roman Empire, having a brief reign at the end of the 5th Century A.D. The game's Romulus Augustus is explicitly identified with the historical figure in one of the Midnighter Archivist Badge clues, which refers to him as 'the last Emperor of th Roman Empire'. Although the historical figure was only a boy when he was made emperor, that's still a strong piece of evidence to place the time around the end of the 5th Century.

By the end of the 5th century, the western Roman empire was in complete collapse, and there were plenty of local rulers around, so I don't think the presence of a king is very problematic.

I don't think that you can move the whole of Cimerora back to the pre-Hellenic age without providing more of an explanation as to how all those Roman names, and Roman-styled dress and armour got back there with it. Particularly, I don't find 'the devs picking an easy name' to be a very strong argument. Also, you end up having to hand-wave the wide-spread presence of steel armour in the bronze age (or maybe even Stone Age -- I wasn't exactly sure what you meant by 'a few thousand years BC).

I guess fundamentally I don't see why 'for some mysterious reason, Romans are living in pre-Hellenic times' is clearly preferably to 'for some mysterious, magic is working in the 5th century A.D.' as an explanation for Cimerora.

So surely the time to complain that one is being asked to buy something without sufficient information would be...when one *is* actually being asked to buy something without sufficient information. Either they'll release more information by then or they won't, but getting all teal deer about an entirely hypothetical situation a month ahead seems a little pointless.

That's pretty much my view, too. Once I get up to the mid-30s, then I can usually tell if the character is going to be something I'll want to play for a long time, and then I'll do a 50 build in Mids and start putting in low bids for the nice set recipes. Otherwise, I'm fine with common IOs and cheap sets until I get bored with the character and move on.

    FWIW as anecdata...

As I'm levelling up, I save merits and then roll all I have at 35 -- IOs I want for any toons are slotted, the rest I sell. I'll keep rolling up to around level 40, and after that tend not to do much with my merits. I only put a lot of effort into IOing out toons I'm expecting to want to keep playing at 50, and I try to outfit them with IOs of around level 30-40.

With my 50s, I honestly just tend to forget the merits are there. I already have plenty of inf. The market has a lot of supply at 50, so generating more isn't much of a help for supply problems. If I notice that I've hit the merit cap I do a bunch of random rolls, or if I'm feeling lazy I buy a LotG +rech or two and sell them. And I occasionally use the merits for buying very low level KB protection or Stealth IOs for lowbie characters.

If it were possible to choose the level of random recipes rolls, I'd roll an awful lot more of them. I suppose I should spend more time in AE and roll tickets instead, but I like TFs.

What you need to do it open your recipe window, and drag the recipe directly from that window into an empty WW slot.
