Quote:1. You should head over to the scrapper forums for some help rebuilding that EM/Shield. Mine is softcapped to all positions and has more HP (without OWtS) than my Ill/FF/Stone (with EE). Also OWtS doesn't give defense.*/FF/Stone. My EM/Shields scrapper feels absolutely squishy in comparison. The controller has better HP and better defense vs _everything_ than the scrapper outside of "One With The Shield". And the controller has it 100% of the time with no crash.
As to the primary, Fire makes a good melee toon. Illusion/FF/Stone is the granite tanker of controllers. Plant and Mind both give you an AoE confuse power to shorten the time it takes to kill stuff.
And with all due respect to those folks suggesting Kin or Rad, you will never fully understand the definition of "squishy" until you play one of those two sets or empath.
If you want controller melee, check out this video and see for yourself: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nml5LEtyjig
2. Why anyone would bother playing Ill/FF/Stone in melee continually is beyond me. You have, at most, two melee attacks (both from the Epic) and no defense debuff resistance. It's not like jousting is hard.
3. All controllers have access to Earth's Embrace and softcapping is absurdly easy these days. One controller set calling another squishy is silly.
Edit: To the OP's question - Fire, Ice, Elec, Plant / Kin, Rad, Time -
Looks good so far, thank you for not obliterating my AT forums.

Go to FBZ Sierra/Xray for Fakes. Very easy to get the badge solo.

Quote:I could not agree more strongly. Most MMO's have class specific forums; f2pers looking for info will expect it (and so do I - it is the only section of the forums that I regularly browse). This one is not your typical MMO - free players are going to need AT specific guidance. Please don't make it harder to find what they need. Here's my suggestion:
DO NOT MERGE THE ARCHETYPE FORUMS.
I'm sorry, but your pigeonholing archetypes and merging these forums together will just create an unreadable mess where we, as forum posters and readers, CANNOT find the information we're looking for.
Seriously. "I'm playing a Dominator. I should look for the Dominator forum" is not a hard thing to grasp.
Quote:While I certainly appreciate your viewpoint:
What if we provided guidelines so that posts were easily identifiable within each forum?
I don't particularly view it as pigeonholing, simply as...well...simplifying. There's a rather large amount of forums to sift through here on our boards, and to a new, or even veteran player who hasn't spent time on the forums, it's a bit confusing.
Forums should be easy to understand at a glance.
@Zwillinger: it seems to me that your basic objection is not to the forums themselves so much as to the way in which they are presented. Perhaps the best fix would be to focus on improved presentation rather than changing the actual forums. -
On a side note - this issue seems to be recurring for me every time the game servers are down. I can't log into the forums until the game servers are back up.
-
traditional main reason: perma-PA. (which these days is achievable w/out kin, so not that motivating).
-
So two men are standing in a room: one about 22, the other 50 years old. A woman walks in and says to the young man, "Boxers or briefs?" "Briefs" he replies. She turns to the older man and asks the same question. After a moment spent considering he says, "Depends."
-
Quote:That is exactly why controllers were my first favorite AT (my 'shade was the second as soon as the 'troller hit 50). Lately I have been feeling like the end game has passed them by though. Options are nice, but when there are characters that wade into an 8-man spawn and walk away 5 seconds later leaving behind a pile of corpses I feel like my options are kinda wasted. To me, Controllers are more strategic than any other AT, and that's why I like them. All the other ATs have a powerset specifically designed for damage . . . and then ends up as some kind of set up leading to the same attack chain over and over. Controllers have to do more to adjust to the circumstances, adjust to the team, adjust to the terrain and adjust to the objectives.

Quote:Blah. I wish I could call that bad advice. The fact that I can't is why I say the core stalker mechanics (AS/Hide/Placate/Crits) need to be improved. What I recommend is that where a Stalker and Scrapper share a powerset combo, go with the scrapper version.
More damage, more HP, and you can mimic hide with an IO...
The lack of AoE doesn't bother me - you're right that it's more desirable in teams, but that doesn't make good ST damage useless. Not every AT/powerset is designed to do the same thing and Stalkers have been designed for ST from the beginning. Want AoE? Play a different AT. I'll probably incite the ElM+Waterspout fanboys by saying that but it's true for the AT as a whole, regardless.
Is that no one is actually doing so [Edit: except the OP, my bad. Don't know how I missed that]. The problem is practical usability not DPA, especially on teams. -
I know a number of experienced melee players who have said on the forums that they dropped AS. EvilGeko is the one that I remember off the top of my head. I'd say it depends what you're playing. I wouldn't drop it from my Spines/Nin because I want the ST damage for soloing. On the DM/Nin that I'm leveling now... it's certainly a possibility once I'm up to 50.
Edit: I agree that given the fast-paced way the gameplay has evolved AS is clunky at best and worse than useless at worst. -
@CoH Management - This is just absurd. I'm not ragequitting and I'm glad the servers are back up ahead of schedule, but: the past two months have seen a ridiculous amount of downtime both planned and unplanned. I'm in a similar business, so I understand that these things happen... and that they don't have to be repeated recurring issues if you get your **** together. Kindly do.

Let's talk about strategy for the final boss, Avatar.
Problem 1: Will of the Earth (WotE) - whoever is targeted by this attack has a big yellow disc around them. When it goes off after a few seconds, it heals the Avatar for every player in range. Basically, if targeted, you have to run off to the corner by yourself. Not hard, but it means no one can be indispensable. There must be redundancy - if particular buffs/heals/abilities are required then several people must have them.
Problem 2: Confuse - this affects everyone on the map randomly, even out of line-of-sight. It happens a lot, to multiple players at once - without extra mez protection, you may be mezzed as much as 50% of the time. Essentially T3 Clarion is required; since deaths and WotE will happen we need lots of players to have it for redundancy. And to stay buffed, players will have to remain grouped up (possibly several groups).
Problem 3: Cripple - cone attack, end drain and -recovery are the biggest problems here. If this is weak enough to be overcome by SB/Heat Loss/Transference then maybe it could be ignored with enough buffing. I rather doubt it, in which case we cannot afford to have everyone hit. That means we need an 'Aggro Group' of several tanks (who all have T3 Clarion); they would take aggro one or two at a time and keep the Avatar facing into a corner or against a wall. After one tank is debuffed another would jump in to take aggro, continually swapping out as needed. Everyone else will stay behind the Avatar.
Problem 4: Infection - pbaoe stacking debuff to resistance and defense. I've only done the trial with ranged characters so far - I don't have personal experience with it, but based on the description, we can't afford to have most of the League in melee. We'll need the Aggro group, a Melee group behind the Avatar and a Ranged group further back behind the Avatar. If so, melee is pretty well screwed because all the heals/buffs will be in the ranged group. Maybe with enough defense buffing this debuff can be ignored? Need more input here - I'm not sure how the exact mechanics will work out.
Problem 5: Corruption - Avatar drains Desdemona's life. The effect worsens when her allies are close to her. I have no experience seeing this in action so more information on the exact mechanics would help. She can be healed, so keeping her with the Ranged group and letting her soak up aoe heals may be sufficient. If not, things are likely to get complex.
Problem 6: Damage: there's several attacks here, some dealt to random targets, some in pbaoe, some random ranged aoe and some that hits everyone in the chamber regardless of range. Simply put: stay grouped, have aoe heals. Of course we'll need multiple people with aoe healing since WotE could remove any one of them at any time. The Aggro group will likely need dedicated ranged healing. Desdemona does have a short range aoe buff to help with Seedling damage, but how we use it will depend on our solution to Corruption above.
That's all I have so far. Looks like we need lots of people to farm T3 Clarion and leagues will need good tanking/healing with ranged damage preferred. Hopefully someone can come up with ways to simplify this for PuG leagues; I really hate encounters that are so choosy that leaders get anal about who they invite. I have several unpleasant LRSF memories. -
Was on Virtue, second to last mission of Numina, mapserved. Can't log back into the game.
Edit: Nevermind, back in now. Apparently half my team d/c as well at the same time, so not just me. -
@OP:
Melee in general takes a while to mature. All those great defensive powers have to have enough slots and (at least) SOs before they begin to shine. And yes, Invul is awesome. -
-
I've had the same problem on this account for days. I was able to log in once last night (no apparent reason). Today unable to log in. Tried the work-around suggested above and it didn't work immediately; I didn't know to give it 15 min. Obviously I'm able to get in now, so hopefully it is fixed.

I'm sorry to hear you're having problems with it. I've created and leveled 3 different pacts since head start began. I've deliberately broken 2 around level 20, and the third hasn't gotten that high yet; I don't seem to have the patience for half xp, but they all seemed to be working correctly.
You can give them some time on the petition, but headstart is limited and I'm sure they are swamped. Deleting and recreating the bugged character might be faster (although you would never get those 16 levels back). -
Quote:Agreed. The OP's drama notwithstanding, it is entirely rational to object to granting a corporation unlimited snooping privileges in my personal computer. I'm somewhat appalled by the number of people who disagree. All of that is understoood. Edit: By me, at least.
As I mentioned earlier, I want to play their game. By doing so, I ostensibly grant them the rights set forth in the EULA. I do not like some of what's in the EULA that I would now quite explicitly grant them by playing, local law allowing, so I am using this thread to speak about that.
I remember at the launch of another NCSoft title* an anti-cheating utility was required to install/play the game. It required full admin rights and total control of the computer. The fact that it was a third-party outsourced app was almost as disturbing as it's invasiveness.
*Which we will not name, but may have included classic MMO design, pretty wings, and lots of grinding. -
Why not solve the KB problem with an IO? I've always admired the way the Theft of Essence proc neatly solved the painfully high END costs of Dark Regen without actually changing the power or breaking anything else. Add a new IO set to the game, maybe travel (10-50) so anyone can stick it in Sprint. Have one of the enhancements in the set be a Global that reduces KB to KD in all powers the character uses.
Of course, now it occurs to most that F2P players won't have IOs... damnit. Maybe Null the Gull is the better way to do this. -
Quote:This. Except I don't use it as a panic button; I sit on it waiting for a group big enough to be worthwhile that won't be destroyed by the team in the time it takes me to BU/Aim+Nuke.Doesnt work....
Crashing nukes leave you too vulnerable afterwards, kill your dps, and wind up being sat on waiting for a situation desperate enough to need them.
Meanwhile I spam Rain of arrows every time its up, need it or not, just because it costs me nothing to do so.
I've been planning a ranged softcap build for my fire/nrg and realized that I didn't want Inferno because it isn't worth using. Sure the damage is great, but only 16 targets, no end and 20 seconds of -recov? It just doesn't do enough to be worth sitting out the next spawn or two while I recover.
That said, I ended up taking it as a set mule. -
Quote:I had the same problem on my Vista user account. It stopped giving me the prompt after a bit, which would be nice except I didn't change anything.Oh, hey, that might be a viable alternative. I could do that -- I do have an admin account, after all.
I didn't realize that turning it off wasn't just the same thing as disabling security features. I'ma go fix that now! Since my admin account has set things up so that CoH runs without admin privs, I really have no reason to ever have them available.
ETA:
And NCAccess still prompts me to tell me that if UAC were enabled, I'd need to say yes.
>.<
I don't know what the bloody software is doing, but I'm not planning to give it admin access to anything any time soon. The whole issue seems to be a combination of sucky Windows account design with poor NCSoft coding. -
Most days I don't have time to play much. On my day off, sometimes, I do. Except when the servers are down two weeks in a row on my day off. Equal my ***.
I love our dev team and I understand crap happens so I'm not ranting, but the servers are not supposed to be down, and it does suck that they are. On a side note - I'm more than a little concerned by the outages considering that F2P is around the corner. The servers are unstable as hell now - can you imagine adding a couple thousand F2Pers to the load? If I had to guess I'd say this is a big part of why we haven't heard a release date for Freedom. -
My first 50 was a bubbler; I do know what the set offers and I stand by my statement. On a practical level through the vast majority of the game Cold will do just as well as FF for shielding and offer massive debuffs at the same time.
-
You don't see a lot of Bubblers because Cold does the most important part just as well (practically speaking) and has awesome debuffs too. You don't see many Defender primary Bubblers because secondary bubbles are just as effective (practically speaking) and there's no need for the slight edge in +def numbers that being a defender will get you.
-
Really depends on what you're looking for. I've done spines/nin to 50 and was rather unimpressed - trying to play an aoe set on an AT designed around ST damage is not something I prefer. The above poster is correct that you can do interesting things with ELM though.
I started a dm/nin a couple weeks ago (up to 30 now), and I'm finding DM a much better fit for the AT's mechanics than spines was. Oh, and shadow maul is not bad - it's the only attack DM gets that hits more than one target - damn handy even on a ST focused character.
Edit: I took both shadow punch and smite for leveling, as well as shadow maul. I didn't have any problems pre-siphon life.
