Yeah...as said, that's the GR CB info. We're talking about I17 CB. 2 different things.
-edit- But as I said, there's no such thing as precedent when it comes to CB selections. You might find yourself a "welcome to i17 CB" email in your inbox tomorrow. They very well could just go "what the heck! all you folks waitin for GR CB, c'mon in here and help us test I17!" That still doesn't make the current CB (I17) into GR CB. -
Quote:This is one of those "learn to read" things. From the OP:
So no, he and I are not saying the same thing.
Yeah...you're saying they'll be released at the same time, and he's saying they'll be released around the same time. He then goes on to say that DS, at that time, (if it drops at the same time as I17 or around the time I17 drops, really irrelevant either way) will be only available to those that PRE PURCHASED GR. The main point of that snippet isn't if DS early releases with I17 or a bit before/after it. The main point is that it's NOT a part of I17, but a perk for prepurchasing GR.
So um, yeah. You're saying the same thing. The early release of DS is only available to those that prepurchased GR. If that early release is the same exact time as I17 or a little before or a little after isn't the point. Just that it's earlier than the release of GR. -
Quote:Um...that's *exactly* what he said. He simply put it in the form of a conversation...could be formatted better...maybe like this:Absolutely and completely incorrect. DS will be pushed onto the servers at the same time as I17, but it will only be available if you pre-purchase GR. From the GR pre-purchase announcement:
poster 1: "Hey, I heard rumors that DS is part of I17"
Poster 2: "THAT IS A FLAT OUT LIE" etc etc"
he continues from there with almost word for word what you posted. -
Exactly. The *only* way to use DP or DS powersets is to buy GR, either now for early access or when it goes live. They are part of GR, just like Praetoria. Without buying GR, you don't get access to any of the 3.
Now, they did open up the DP CB to Vet/Loyalty/Comicon qualified folks, *or* there was simply a lot of overlap between those people and whatever criteria they used to pick people for DP CB. I don't know. Doesn't really matter, as there's no such thing a setting a precedent when it comes to Devs deciding who gets into a CB. They can pick whomever they want for whatever reasons they see fit. Unless they outright say "Do XYZ and you'll get into the CB for XXX", there's nothing guaranteeing a way into any CB.
And in this case there's nothing stating that they have to open I17's CB to Vet/Loyal/Comicon folks. -
Quote:You mis-understood his statement. He's saying that, even if this *was* a beta that Loyalty program, Vet badges etc, would allow you access to (which I don't believe it is, as this is I17 CB, not GR CB), it wouldn't automatically mean that you get in on day one of that beta.day one would be when the dev's put DS on test that day one and yes that will be the next time the above people will be able to get into a GR test.
will everyone get in i dont know im not a dev i hope that answers your question thx
In other words, when GR goes into CB, your Loyalty prog/Vet Badge/Comicon status would gaurantee that you get in....at some point. It doesn't mean that you will definetely get access the moment the CB starts. -
Really, there's only one feature of GR being tested now, Demon Summoning. UM, as has been linked, has been moved out of GR into I17. DS will be *available* around the time I17 goes live, but only with a GR pre-purchase, making it still an exclusive part of GR.
So even using that twisting of words, this current CB is still *not* GR's closed beta...especially since it's explicitly being called "Issue 17 Closed Beta". Therefore, the Loyalty program, Vet badges and whatever else they said would get you into the Closed Beta for Going Rogue does not apply for what is currently on test. Since it's *not* the Closed Beta for Going Rouge. -
DXP weekends are scheduled pretty far in advance. Don't think there was anything they coulda done with out an uproar from all the people that make plans around the posted dates of em....though I spose they could have done the reactivation later.

Quote:Completely agree here...tho I do find it odd that JB has no problem using comics as examples of how he feels things in this game should be. It's been said before....this game's in a superhero setting, but it's not a comic book simulation. They had to make various concessions/adjustments/what have you in order to make a game that would work, get people to keep playing and sustain their business.I agree that my suggestion of 'proliferatiing' a (probably much weaker) version of Grant Defense over to Gauntlet is unlikely...but no more unlikely than many other ideas I have seen proferred. Mine has an advantage in that a version of it is already in the game.
As far as
I am not doing anything of the sort. I was just making an observation; feel free to not have observed the same thing.
However, since you brought up the Taunt mechanic: I have always felt that in THIS game, it was as close as they felt they could get to simulating a Tanker character jumping in front of blows meant for his comrades without having the game engine move your character around the field for you. It's basically the same thing as programming the AI to prefer to shoot at the Tanker (which they also sort of did; Tanker attacks generate more aggro than that of most characters).
Sure, comic book tanks don't do that sort of thing all the time. But they aren't controlled by player characters, either. If a PC wants to spam taunt, I'm not going to say him nay.
I agree with you that many things about how the game engine works are illogical, oversimplified, and outdated. I think the devs know that, too and are moving forward with the speed of programming to correct it.
Actually, I agree with a lot of your expressed feelings about the game, but in many cases, you seem to undermine your message with how you say them. Although you've been better lately. -

Quote:You've been here long enough to know that what's announced this early is just a teaser. That's like saying the previews before the movie are gonna need to be a lot longer to justify paying 10 bucks to see em.In my eyes it's just gonna need alot more than whats announced to justify an expansion. The hardcore crowd will buy it no doubt. But I have a feeling GR is aimed more toward introducing/getting back players. Not retaining the players who would never leave in the first place. For that, it's gonna need abit more.
-
The thing is, JB has *always* looked at this game as if it were intended to be a simulation of existing comic books. It's not. It's a game first and formost, and that means the devs, while inspired by superhero comics, had to depart from what works in that medium (where the writers never have to worry about a character feeling useful) when they felt necessary in order to make a game that worked, and actually get it out the door.

Quote:SWG already had it's mass exodus when they did the NGE. It's players are scattered around in a lot of current games...I think most games will lose a good chunk of active players when TOR comes out. Not saying they'll all quit their current games, but there are a *lot* of SWG refugees out there.I don't think that is a fair statement. I would hazard a guess that a majority of any MMO player base is made up of people who are playing because they like the genre. I'm sure there are a host of folks that will jump ship from their current MMO just because they want to play the latest and greatest but for the most part you won't see a mass exodus for SWTOR from any game except maybe Star Wars Galaxies.

I just want the damned thing to keep me logged in from page to page.

Quote:That would go against the only other thing they've used the phrase "paid time", Vet. Rewards, and I don't see why they would change that...it would just confuse people.60+ months of paid time means exactly that, I think. If you've *paid* for five years of City of Heroes, you get to pop in on the first wave.
I have almost 36 months of time on City of Heroes, and I've paid up for 42. If I bought another 18 months, that's one six month prepaid time non-recurring subscription through paypal, and another 12 month prepaid time non-recurring subscription through paypal, I'd have 62 months paid time (thanks to the additional months free) and would qualify for wave 1 closed beta access.
That's how I read it anyway.
Paid time refers to time that's already past, including free months from codes. -

I don't pretend to be an expert on Masterminds, bit I'm a sworn Scrapper at heart, and if even I can admit Masterminds are as close to tank-mages as we're going to get, trust me that this counts for something.
[/ QUOTE ]
Like you, I'm not an expert MM player by any means. I'm also not saying that MMs don't tread close to Tank Mage territory. What I'm saying is that MMs have issues to deal with that makes them different than having Tanks become Tank Mages (by dealing Scrapper damage or having support like Dark Miasma).
A Tanker is in full control of their abilities, not AI.
A Tanker won't freak out when hit by Burn or Caltrops.
A Tanker doesn't need to worry about mezzes (for the most part).
A Tanker can 'focus' on one target without sacrificing defense.
Etc.
That's what I was trying to say. Sorry if I wasn't clear, it was a short night. :\
[/ QUOTE ]
Also the point I was making....all the fiddly bits inherent with being a MM are the reason the Devs let them flirt with the edges of tankmagery. -
That's the thing though. Yes, certain MM powerset combos can come very close to tank-magery, at times, but all those fiddly bits are there precisely for that reason.
Sure they're durable, but not when they're trying to max their offense..no bodyguard. The longer a fight goes, the more likely a MM is going to lose henches, leading to a decrease in both offense and defense. Sure, they can get close to awesome survivability, and yeah, they can lay out serious hurt, but generally speaking not at the same time, and not for very long.
But then this whole discussion is somewhat moot anyway. It's not like any of this tanker discussion is new, to us or the devs.
Tanks are somewhat a silly concept if you look at them literally, or from a comic standpoint. Just like chesspieces move limitations look silly if you look at them literally.
Just like tanks, they're just pieces in a game that do what they do in order for the game to work as the designers intended.
Would anyone *really* want the AI hatelist prioritized based on actual threat the PCs represent to a given mob, (big damage spike= kill that PC, massive heal delivered= kill that pc) without requisite wholesale changes to all the ATs?
That change, i'd suspect, would end up with a lot of homoginization. We'd loose those extremes of damage and toughness and such that a lot of people enjoy...i know i love big orange numbers -
so.....they've invented flimsy fingerless gloves...very innovative :P
-
They never said they were impossible. Unfeasible for a variety of reasons, (cons outweigh pros of adding them by a lot) but they could theoretically do it. The main con that i didn't see listed in they lengthy reply above is this.
What could they do to differentiate vehicles from current travel powers without turning the game into "City of Jetbikes"?...not a direct quote, but that's essentially one of Posi's concerns. -
[ QUOTE ]
so how are Io's gonna work in this process....???
are all power switches gonna be transferable??
[/ QUOTE ]
Wha? Are you under the impression that powerset proliferation will allow you to change an existing character? That's not the case...proliferation simply means that you can make new characters with powersets that were previously unavailable to a given AT -
Just a minor slightly off topic quibble. African American is the more imprecise of those 2 terms, imo. Yes, Negro is the more offensive, but that's neither here nor there.
You have to go so far back in the family tree with most American descendants of slaves to get to an African connection that it's almost no connection at all, outside of skin tone and facial features. And even then, we're just as much a mixed bag of ethnicities as any other modern day American who can trace their family back a long ways. Save African American for the voluntary immigrants...me, I'm from New Jersey
on topic... yes. more=gooder -
In a slightly related note...was watching a NBA playoff game at a bar the other night....the halftime scoreboard report was brought to me courtesy of WoW.
-
And really, it's not even about RP....near as I can tell in my 5 years here, the devs just want people to enjoy the content (the enemies, the stories in the missions, the environments, the gameplay) that they've worked to put in, and to stay subscribed as long as possible.
I don't think they care if you immerse yourself in your characters or chat about last night's episode of "hit show # 3". They do know that this isn't a game that's focused on what you do once you've maxed out your character, and therefore they try to curtail things that are gonna have you whooshing to the "end"...as that trivializes the work they've put in, and is likely to burn out the average subscriber quicker. -
Also, the Devs all have "civilian" accounts, that are the same as the ones we have, and do play incogneto all the time.
-
I don't remember that either...but generally they don't make promises of what's gonna be in any new issue until they make the complete announcement for that specific issue.
