It also surprises me how the discussions often seem to revolve mostly around the language itself, as if that was somehow the source of ill will between players.

I always felt it's far worse to kindly inform a player that "you sir, are an idiot", than it is to have a character use the phrase "eat ****, ************" in RP. In pretty much all games I've even been on though, I've seen people banned for using the f-word carelessly - and at the same time, I've seen others escape without even a slap on the wrist, despite repeatedly going out of their way to hurt and insult other players in an OOC fashion, albeit using posh language to do so. It all feels extremely foreign to me.

Anyone else playing the EU servers, who is noticing a difference in attitudes towards language and intentions?

Calling a player a smeghead... I'd consider it offensive to no end. Far worse than using "profanity" in character. The intentions, and the intended target, matter so little. "Euphemisms and invented vulgarities" just strike me as odd, and again, very american. Someone comes up to me and writes "What the frack are you doing?!", to me it's little more than a way to circumvent the profanity filter. We all know the meaning of frack is equivalent of ****, don't we?

    Mac
What can we say. America was founded by a bunch of religious nut-jobs that got kicked out of Europe and we've always had screwy intolerances to language and sexuality. Sure we've come a long way but we still have plenty of uptight factions.

I myself got smacked with the generic bat because someone got offended over a character I had named Phart the Dispersing.

Another problem is the method in which we have to communicate in this games and forum. The written word lacks so much vital subtext it's easy to assume the worst meaning is intended. We have no way of hearing the tone of voice, of seeing the body language. Things that normally tell us if a person is angry or joking around. It's also easy to forget that we don't know who's on the other end of the computer. That same anonymity also makes some individuals think they can get away with acting like jerks.

(and some of us like me are jerks to begin with. )

It doesn't matter how many times you want to suggest this idea or how many ways you reword it to try to make it sound different, the fact remains that every single time the devs have responded to the respec suggestions it has always been the same answer. They are not going to let us respec into new powersets.

The only people that get hostile in these threads are the people that don't want to accept that the devs aren't going to implement this idea.
  3. If a ZPM was powerful enough to reach the Destiny they could have dialed from Atlantis. Furthermore they can't just use the power from the core of any planet to establish a wormhole to the Destiny. The Ancients facility was built into the planet Icarus which had a unique naquadria core which provided sufficient power to dial a 9th chevron address. This world was the only world ever discovered to naturally produce Naquadria.

The Lucien Alliance had discovered another Icarus type planet with a naturally occurring naquadria core and set up a base so they could attack the Destiny. Both planets blew up so unless Earth can find a third planet Icarus type planet they can't dial the Destiny.

Personally Dump I think it's more a sign that the individuals in question lack maturity when they feel they need to express themselves constantly with profuse amounts of profanity.

(I say this because when I see the words "intellectual inadequacy" I'm thinking it refers to people with lower IQ's. If I'm wrong I apologize.)

I believe there are appropriate times when vulgarity is ok. For example if someone were to come up to you and say, "Hey how would you like to go to the local prison, get naked, and play some soap soccer with the inmates?"

    Sure you could say,

    a. "I'm sorry but I won't be joining you. Thanks so much for asking. I appreciate the invitation, but I've checked my schedule and it turns out, unfortunately that I'm unavailable."

    Or you could say,

    b. "F*** off!"

Sure the first response is more polite but it lacks the visceral impact the second response expresses.

While you and I might think of doing that, we have rarely seen anyone do that on the SG shows. Everyone blindly assumes the other side has a non toxic breathable atmosphere, the inhabitants speak English, and everyone lives within walking distance of a gate.

Oh and even tho they are billions of light years from earth with no hope of being resupplied, their guns never run out of ammunition. They may run out of food, water, even air but they always got plenty of bullets.

That a load of bull. I've seen several SG's where the thief was one of the leaders. Someone that was a long standing trusted member who got in an argument with the other leaders and decided to plunder everything and quit. And a year or two ago there was a big stink over how an SG leader of a large SG, who had been playing for years suddenly decided to quit the game but first kicked everyone from the SG (it may have been more than one SG) before quitting the SG himself.

The other side of my opinion is that we do have a profanity filter in this game and those offended by such language should be using it. Parents should make sure that it's enabled before allowing their kids to play. None of us should ever hear from a GM that we were reported for foul language.

But it happens because this is America, Land of the Offended.
Just like to point out something Bill, Parents can't keep their kids from going into options and turning the filter off.

Now personally swearing and cussing doesn't bother me in the least, but I do understand that everyone doesn't share my tolerances so I respect my fellow players enough to keep it to a minimum on the public channels when playing. When I'm on the private channels where I know everyone and they know me then it's okay to relax and let loose with the vulgarity.

The same goes with the ERP chat. I don't give a rat's *** what people say in private channels, but it doesn't belong on the open channels where minors or the overly sensitive can read it.
  8. On a starship the easiest way to defend a gate is to put it in a cargo bay like room and vent the atmosphere if an unfamiliar wormhole is incoming.
  9. My personal preference is to start as early as possible because I can buy them dirt cheap at the AH from the people working on their crafting badges. I know the powers and slots I'm going to need so I place my bids and just wait for them to get filled. I then save all my inf from the drops I sell for my big purchases at level 27.

Also I only use generic IO's, don't care about the sets unless I'm planning ahead to stockpile and sell them when the prices spike. (Like I do with Winter's Gift)
  10. Here's some quick advice if the Op comes back to the thread cuz I can't promise to be online at the requested time. (and we don't have his global name either)

If the Op is doing Going Rogue please be aware that when you get sent to a new contact you need to go thru the introduction first and then click on the contact a second time and get a mission to make sure it is added to your contact list.

There was some confusion and frustration from new players that didn't realize this in the beginning.

Oh and welcome to the game Atom, hope you like what you see and stick around for a long long time.

I didn't say we have a flood of dueling trolls, I said the people that want open world PvP are the ones who would make pests of themselves. "Dueling trolls" would not limit themselves to simply spamming someone with demands to duel, they'd also go out of their way to disrupt costume contests and social events. They'd fight in Wentworth's/Black Market, around trainers, Icon/Facemakers, University, npc stores, Pocket D.

Now it's remotely possible that some of the open world PvPers wouldn't act like this but I'm not betting on it.

This is actually the 1st time I haven't wanted DXP to accompany a reactivation weekend.

This and theres also the fact that people unfamiliar with the difference in how contacts work in Praetoria (how many people assumed that contacts were automatically added to their contact list) will easily find themselves outleveling their initial contacts and have no idea how to get new contacts, which will create a lot of bad impresions about GR.

It's nice to know that their are aliens that exceed the technology of the ancients. While the ancients may have been able to panspermia entire galaxies, even they couldn't Genesis solar systems.

I'm waiting for Eli to make a ST: Voyager joke now they have a group of Lucian Alliance members on board.

Chloe suddenly gets turned into Wolverine. Sudden mutation in space never ends well.

The result of the two part episode was eliminate the baby and adding more permanent cast members on the ship.

I agree with you about the results of part two, and I'm not surprised that there are races more advanced than the Ancients. Once they discovered ascension they gave up on advancing their technology.

This show seems too similar to Voyager, but Voyager nerfed the Maquis too quickly while that might not be the case for the Lucian Alliance that work well with others. Only saw two in the entire crew, the women that shot the acting leader and the guy that was marooned with his followers.
That's why I said they could have lowered the atmosphere to the point where the Lucian's passed out upon arriving as one of their options. Once the gate shut off they could have turned the air back on and disarmed and captured the unconscious invaders. Then they could have taken the prisoners and put each in separate rooms, sealed the doors and vented the air in the corridors outside the "prison cells" which would make any attempt to escape impossible. Then they could have safely dumped the prisoners on the next habitable planet using the shuttle. I say shuttle because common sense says not to put them anywhere on a continent with a stargate because that would remove the possibility of them figuring out how to use the gate to leave and somehow figure out how to follow the Destiny like Eli and the useless lovers did.

Of course it was stupid since the whole "invasion" could have been resolved simply by either closing off the gate room and evacuating the atmosphere to the point that the invaders would have passed out from lack of oxygen shortly after arriving, or totally venting the atmosphere and letting them die upon arrival.

Better yet have the default setting for PvP turned off so people interested in PvPing will have to go into their options menu and turn on PvP, That way new players won't be harrassed by PvP because they didn't know to set their flag to block PvP.

Still don't want more PvP zones tho.

Oh it's going to be like that is it? Okay. I haven't seen any evidence that people use PvP in over 3 years. By that I mean that I haven't seen anybody actually PvPing in front of me, If I haven't witnessed them actually PvPing I can't count them as PvPers. That means using your own logic there are no PvPers in the game to my knowledge, and if there are no actual PvPers then there is no reason to waste any resources on PvP content.
