If you are looking at the CM 690 II Advance at NewEgg, the loop can be found in the last picture that displays the case, shipping box and all the miscellaneous screws and accessories. The angle isn't all that good, it's above the case/mb speaker, looks like a black rectangle with only a bit of the curve loop visible.
You can see a better picture of it in this review of the case (2nd picture, right hand side, bellow the two rubber fan mounts). The manual lists both the loop and the screw for it in the parts list but fails to show you where and how to install it (probably because all the diagrams already has it installed), but it's pretty obvious if you look closely at the case. -
Quote:Since I don't count rebates or NewEgg "savings" it's still very close to my target price which includes a 5% hardware cost buffer.Hey all,
Since this hell semester is finally winding down, I've decided it's time to replace the desktop that was stolen from me back in january. And, surprise surprise, there's a new set of processors just out to boot.
I was planning on doing something along the lines of Father Xmas' 1350$ build, which in the time since its last update has fallen to around 1200$. Toss out the 100$ for a copy of windows since I still have the copy from the last computer and it's around 1100$, which, once I add a monitor and keyboard, will be around what I want to pay.
Quote:The question comes with the new processors and associated parts. I'm knowledgeable enough to assemble a computer, install windows, etc, but I don't really feel confident on the picking out hardware side of things, and I *really* haven't had any time lately to pay attention to that sort of thing.
The processor on the old list is an i5-2500k, which goes for 220$ at the moment. Of the 7 ivy bridge processors available at newegg, the i5-3550 seems to be the closest equivalent, as far as I can tell. What I'm wondering, though, is what's the significance of the letters after the number? I *think* it has something to do with integrated graphics; correct me if I'm wrong, but that shouldn't be important for a build with a discrete graphics card, right (although then I'd wonder why it was in the last build)? Also, the main difference between i5 and i7 is the hyperthreading that gets two threads going per core, right? Am I correct in thinking that that doesn't make much difference if I'm not running a million programs at once, and therefore that I don't really need an i7? Basically, I don't really know the reasoning behind the choice of the original processor, so I'm not sure choosing the nearest equivalent ivy bridge version is correct.
Quote:I believe I'm supposed to be looking for Z77 chipset/socket LGA 1155 motherboards for ivy bridge. The old motherboard was an ASRock Z68 Extreme4 LGA 1155 board for about 180$. This seems to be the nearest equivalent Z77 motherboard - even somewhat cheaper. Again, though, I don't know what the reasoning for the original choice was, so I'm not sure if simply looking for the nearest equivalent is the right thing to do.
There's been some reviews on Z77 chipset based motherboards. The Z77 gives you access to more "knobs" for overclocking and native USB 3.0 support. Even though there's been a few reviews of Z77 motherboards at the usual trusted review sites, they've all used a Sandy Bridge or an Ivy Bridge engineering sample for the review. Now that Ivy Bridge is available, I suspect we'll see more reviews soon but paired with actual production Ivy Bridge CPUs.
EDIT: Speak of the devil.
Quote:As for graphics, I was thinking of simply sticking with the EVGA GTX 560 that's in the old list. Is this still a good card? I notice it says it's a 'PCI express 2.0' card, while the motherboard lists 'PCI express 3.0' slots; will it actually work in that motherboard?
Quote:Will the cooler master 212 CPU cooler work with the new processor? I see that it says it works with the intel 1155 sockets; does that mean that it'll still fit the new processor? Also, a review for that particular motherboard mentioned that a similar cooler blocked the first memory slot and that they had to put their ram into slots 2 and 4 - they said it worked, but that seems like a really weird thing to me; I thought the first slot always had to be filled. Could this be a problem?
Quote:Finally, the case. I assume that the cooler master 690 case in the old list is a perfectly good case. Unfortunately, as near as I can tell, it doesn't seem to include any provision for locking the case shut (at least it doesn't look like it in the pictures). Given what happened to my last machine, I fully plan to lock this one shut and then bike lock the case itself to some holes drilled through the side of my heavy wooden desk (won't stop a persistent enough burglar, but ought to defeat the sort of smash and grab jerk who took the last one). I need an appropriate case, though, and it doesn't seem that case manufacturers think that locking provisions are important enough to note in their descriptions. I suppose I can drill holes in the thing for that purpose if I have to, but it seems simpler to just get one that already has a place to put a lock. Does anyone have any suggestions about how to go about finding such a case, or whether it'd just be simpler to just get this one and drill some holes (I can do that, especially since I'm guessing I'll have to drill holes for the bike cable anyway)?
Quote:Apart from all that, is there anything else on that list of parts that's out of date and should be updated? I'd rather not spend extra money, but if better stuff's now available for equivalent prices I'm all ears.
Thanks in advance!
Right now SSDs are "big". I'm still a fan of the concept of using a small one as a drive cache (Intel's SRT) and avoid the hard decisions when it comes what to put on it rather than your main hard drive. But I'm in the minority. Plus reasonably good 120GB drives have come down in price.
I currently have a 850 watt power supply on my parts list. It is much larger than the needs of a single 560Ti and a non overclocked i5-2500K. I chose it over a smaller PSU because I didn't want an enthusiast who wanted to OC the CPU and add a second video card to also need to upgrade the PSU. If you are looking to save a little money, a 650 watt PSU is more than enough. -
I actually rewatched GL a couple of days ago and it's still better than a number of superhero films. I just think the current Batman is just to hard of an act to follow.

Oh, I forgot, Korra does have a glimpse vision of Aang (with a Lincoln beard).

Word is some older P67/Z68 motherboards won't overclock them. May be a bios issue. Might only be a problem with GigaByte motherboards.
Personally I would wait a month until we see if there's another whoops like the Sandy Bridge chipset problem.
Biggest advantages from all the reviews Monday include very low power usage, slight IPC (instructions per cycle) improvement, PCIe V3 video card interface and a big but still underwhelming boost in it's internal GPU performance with Dx11 support.
Biggest downside is an overclocking issue with heat transfer from the smaller physical core to the heat spreader. Intel supposedly switched to a different way to attach the heat spreader.
Edit: Just check NewEgg and Ivy Bridge now has a filter for Ivy Bridge under all of the Narrow Results tabs. -
Thundercats - Kittens Vs Raccoon, Lion-o Vs Pumyra (does the team gain another cat woman?)
Green Lantern - We are introduced to the Star Sapphire Corps with the power of wuv. And Carol does show up.
Young Justice - see other thread. Big news, 5 year time skip, lots of new team members with some old ones now in the JL and the first clue to the missing 16 hours.
DC Nation shorts - Funny as usual. Liked Mad's Teen Titanic.
The Legend of Korra - I think we got our fourth team member, Asami, but she's also a love interest for Mako. Her power is bending money from her wealthy dad. -

Upside, Zatanna is all grown up. Downside she's league now so we probably won't see her that much.
Five year time skip was a shock. Obviously "The Light"'s is playing a long game.

It's nice to see they've expanded the team, a lot. -
Sometimes it happens when the Internet burps. Don't worry about it, unless some of your characters have vanished.

The Socket 1155 CPUs have an internal GPU which is a reason that (I'm assuming you have a Z68 or Z77 motherboard) has all those video connectors. The Ivy Bridge top end internal GPU, the Intel HD4000, is finally on par with a nVidia GT 520.

I run Avira active and do a full system scan with it, SUPERAntiSpyware, SpyBot S+D and MalwareBytes once a week.

I think the Johnny Sokko dubs have slipped into public domain so we get an 9th generation tape of the series on Hulu.
Yes Macross was the least rewritten but imagine someone overseas took V, Buck Rodgers and Battlestar Galactica (the original) and merge them into a single series.
Knightsabers, ADPolice, etc are examples of power armor and not piloted mecha or Gundam size robot. -
Quote:Quite literally. Bruce, putting all his fury, speed and power into one kick made the strike superluminal, thus knocking the intruder back in time to a point just before he hopped the fence, where a sudden unexplained sense of impending doom caused him to change his mind. The Chuck Norris incident reminds me of the legend of when Bruce Lee was reported as working or practicing in his backyard and some idiot hopped the fence and challenged him to a fight.
Bruce was rather furious that his home was violated and put all his fury, speed and power into one kick.

Yes but baby chimpanzees are soooo CUTE. Also which film would you take your young children to, the one with slapstick violence or CUTE baby monkey.

Quote:First I seriously dislike the term Japanimation simply because it's too easy to pronounce the word in a way that starts as a racial slur. This happens a lot more frequently than you would expect.Japanimation counts if it was released in America - so Robotech anyway. But not straight anime.
So I assume looking at your examples that it's OK to include anime as long as it's been televised in English in the US or does the plot also need to be severely rewritten like Robotech?
Well don't forget Gigantor. (Bigger than big, Stronger than strong). What little kid wouldn't like a radio controlled, nuclear powered giant robot that smashes it's enemies while getting tacit approval of the adults present?
Johnny Sakko and his Flying Robot - Old yes, circa 1968. And yes it is the original live action Giant Robo. Like Gigantor, a kid controlled nuclear robot of mass destruction. You can watch it on Hulu. -
Last week's episode added another "new" universe. Even though the episode was set in 2036 it's apparent that the team time skipped from a universe that's different still than any of the ones we've seen so far. At least they showed a seemingly young William Bell trapped in Amber.
Also Walter with a fixed brain is very, very scary. Angry Doctor scary.

Don't get me wrong, I love my Illusion Controller and maybe I didn't make myself clear in my meaning. I only have three controllers in my stable the other two being Gravity. These were created in the days of Issue 2 and 3, pre difficulty slider, XP debt to the max, no IOs, the Hollows opposite corner runs and Perez maze runs were standard, no vet powers, leveling was slow and characters were inf poor until level 35.
Compared to damage oriented ATs, controllers as an AT are slow. Yes SW does enormous damage but a significant chunk will get healed back unless you defeat your target within 10 seconds. Both SW and Blind have longer recharges then other Tier 1+2 controller attacks. Again SW and Blind are your only two attacks in the set. If you are use to damage attack chains from your primary this set can be troublesome.
Which is why I emphasis Deceive. Yes it eats a little bit of XP, unless you simply let them defeat each other rather than helping them along. Anecdote: Was on a team doing the trial/TF in the Hollows. Final room, the team leader was porting players to their alcoves and when it got to me he noticed my pillar was rather crowded by spectral everything. Two bosses, a handful of lieutenants and some minions. The leader went back to the front of the alcove and started to port the other players to mine to help the "poor controller" clear his pillar, he didn't ask if I needed help. By the time he was done there was one boss left, badly damaged and just to show off I went down and finished it off with brawl (I was still keeping it deceived). The team wondered aloud why the leader ported everyone there. A combination of SI, extended range SW, Blind, heavily recharged Deceive and one PA to hold initial aggro let me turn them against one another and let me finish most of them in under two minutes with little threat to myself. Deceive was key in this situation since it let me "recruit" lieutenants and bosses to wipe each other enough that a single SW and an occasional Blind was enough to finish them. The minions were mostly one punched by the bosses.
Sorry I misremembered what Flash did, hold not sleep. The only time I had it, I think I was in Steel by then, it was very disappointing. I clearly remember times setting it off in oh **** moments and nobody got held and I was quickly defeated. Long cast time didn't help matters. I was probably still using TOs at that point. Was not impressed and I respec out of it the first chance I got.
On the other hand, getting back on topic, Superior Invis was a Godsend. Getting to a mission door in Perez park maze with large mobs of clocks +3 to you or kitty-corner in the Hollows deep in CoT territory was a breeze. And endurance problems, we all get Stamina now at level 2 and what enhancement other than end reduct are you planning on slotting in it, defense? Since defense is Class B, 3 SOs could give you only 7% defense instead of 4.5%, half once discovered. Not a lot of bang for the buck.
I periodically duo with a D3. We are both mid to high 30s. When I have my Phantasm out its not even fair, we have to crank up the difficulty beyond what he can comfortably solo just to make it interesting. Since neither of us a melee specialists, the knockback from Phantasm isn't a concern.
I end up rarely use PA except on EBs, GMs and AVs. PA may be great for minion cleanup otherwise it's simply to draw aggro. And since I'm not an IO master with deep pockets, a market master or AE farmer, I don't have perma anything on anyone.
I find playing with characters that are limited, by endurance, by recharge, by defense by regen, a lot more interesting than characters that I can simply flail my attack chain from mob to mob without worry. -

Same here.
T, maybe you're playing it wrong. It's a controller, they don't do a lot of damage, it takes a while to defeat. That's the AT. Controllers are agonizingly slow if you've been playing with scrappers, brutes and blasters.
As for the powerset, don't shortchange Deceive, it's the key power for Illusion, make your enemy your pet. You only really have to damage powers and they are slow to recharge. On top of that some of Spectral Wounds damage is temporary (~40%) and if you don't finish off the target in 10 seconds
PA is good for drawing aggro but isn't that useful in defeating mobs due to the illusionary damage they do, similar effect to Spectral Wounds.
Spectral Terror is a good way to lock down a group and Phantasm is obviously your primary controller pet that can do a heck of a lot more damage than you but has a tendency to attack when standing next to you.
Flash isn't all that useful IMO. An AoE sleep mez with very low starting accuracy (you need a +3 SO in Acc just to get it up to the base for SW and Blind). -
The GTX 555 is an OEM card. It appears to be a GTX 560 cut down to only 288SP (from 336) and 48 Texture units (from 56) and 24 raster operators (from 32) with a 192-bit bus (from 256-bit). Should be a bit faster than a GTX 550Ti.
