Weekend Superheroics, April 28-29

Dark One

Posted

Thundercats - Kittens Vs Raccoon, Lion-o Vs Pumyra (does the team gain another cat woman?)

Green Lantern - We are introduced to the Star Sapphire Corps with the power of wuv. And Carol does show up.

Young Justice - see other thread. Big news, 5 year time skip, lots of new team members with some old ones now in the JL and the first clue to the missing 16 hours.

DC Nation shorts - Funny as usual. Liked Mad's Teen Titanic.

The Legend of Korra - I think we got our fourth team member, Asami, but she's also a love interest for Mako. Her power is bending money from her wealthy dad.

Father Xmas - Level 50 Ice/Ice Tanker - Victory

Yeah, that's my fault for not watching through the crunched credits last week to see the "This Week..." preview that's actually talking about next week.

Also, you can see the real difference in focus on female form between different animators ostensibly targeting the same age group here. Green Lantern has CGI rendering of some fairly skimpy female costumes, and we get some posterior shots, but they're nowhere near the *ahem* loving detail that has been used for Black Widow's (for example) backside over in Avengers: Earth's Mightiest Heroes.

Of all of these, my only complaints are that Animal Man and Plastic Man might be a bit too similar, Superman of Tokyo hasn't really popped, and the Wallace and Gromit-style ones with the British kids' voices could just stop already, since it's dull and lacks any real charm.

Edit: Added a little commentary on art style and the female form.

Thundercats felt a bit plot-light this week. Pumy-ra's hatred vanished just a little too quickly amongst Panthro and Dobo's past and the Thunderkittens interacting with the Racoon. Lot of little stories happening at once apparently as a setup for the next episode.

However; good that there's animosity from other cats against Lion-O showing a clear difference between the sweetness-and-light of the old series where he was just accepted as leader. I hope that Lynx-O will be one of the prisoners in the next episode.

I LMAO during the Supergirl Vs Superman short. Why hasn't anyone done what Supergirl did to Superman before?

/just caught Thundercats and I really hope Pumyra becomes a permanent cast member. Would actually be funny if Cheetarah got jealous / protective if Pumyrah shows interest in Lion-O. ( Some women are like that though, even though they have no romantic intentions toward a guy in their group, if some other girl shows attention / interest, they feel the need to assert their alpha female status)

Maybe , Maybe not. Lynx-O appeared in the first story arc, and was mentioned in a later episode

Oh, I forgot, Korra does have a glimpse vision of Aang (with a Lincoln beard).

Also caught a brief glimpse of an older Sokka and Toph in that vision, as well.

The Super BFFs are probably the best of the bunch of DC Nation shorts. Teen Titans are running a close second.

I'm really disappointed in Thundercats and the emotional whip-lash writing its using. They're just plowing through this story lines and giving no real progression. Pumyra's sudden change of heart was just the earliest example, they're just not putting any effort into giving reasons for them, it's just like the script says at time mark 20:53 Pumyra isn't angry with Lion-o anymore.

With Korra, I'm liking the progression with this, each episode feels like a step forward. I like how they're chiseling away at Korra's spoiled attitude. Mako's girlfriend isn't going to last, I think he and Korra will end up together as a sorry to the Zutara fans and how bad they got trolled in the last series. Their relationship is just playing out like Aang and Katara. Obvious there's some connection there in the beginning, throw in some random relationships along the way to have the jealous angle, and eventually they get together. I liked Amon's reasoning for not just taking away Korra's bending too, it actually made sense to me, none of this, I will face you at your best nonsense.

Indeed. Rather than it being some ludicrous notion of his own superiority (not to say that he can't have such a superiority complex), it's an intelligent tactical maneuver. It lets him get into her head without provoking the rest of the world's benders before he's ready for them.

Avengers - So Scott Lang is now Ant-Man II. Also enjoyed the guest appearance of Iron Fist and Pow -- er, Luke Cage.

And the Super BFFs is great stuff, but then it IS made by the same woman who makes the My Little Pony series, so it is bound to be entertaining.
