Failure to Sense

  1. So according to my forum join date, I've been playing CoX off and on for about 3 years now. In that time, I've managed to make two 50s. One a blaster that I still have now and another a Kin Corruptor I leveled purely to unlock the epic ATs for Arachnos Soldiers.

Issue 19 will be coming out in a few months (we hope) and as a result end game content is going to be a pretty big deal for this game. With that in mind, I want to create a character that I can level up to 50 and use for some of the new missions and TFs we'll be getting. As well, I want this new character to be able to do flashback missions I may have missed before. Basically, I want to make a completionist-capable toon, with a strong focus on solo ability (in the event that I can't find a full team of 8 who want to run Faultline again).

With side switching enabled, I feel that a Brute can offer the best bang for the buck in the departments of surviability, and damage dealing. Willpower was the first thought I had for a secondary simply because of how well it performs, even at early levels compared to other, late-blooming sets. So given all these variables, I was able to come up with a concept I really like for a Kinetic Melee/Willpower Brute.

Since then, I have of course, mapped out a build. Having only minor experience with Brutes in general (nothing past 20) and also not having a strong idea of what to expect with late game content, I submit this build for your perusal with the intent of gleaning some wisdom from more experienced veterans.

    tl;dr

2 end per second net gain recovery, 2.44% hp per second, 133.8% recharge and almost softcapped Smashing/Lethal defense at 44.7%. 50% S/L resist

Will these stats suffice for what I have outlined and propose to use this character for?

Are there obvious, glaring improvements I can make at a nominal cost?
(100M is my approximate bank account at this time)

I skipped fitness, purely because WP already has this pool built in, and with issue 19, stamina and health will become integrated. To those who already have experience with this secondary, can you comment if I will be missing those two powers in the interim between now and issue 19?

Can I speed that recharge up a bit with some minor tweaks? I would very much like to get perma-hasten, if for no other reason than I like continuous performance, rather than 'bursty' zeniths and crashes.

Any other thoughts or suggestions you care to make?

In advance, thanks for your time and for looking at this build. I know it's a fairly common thing to find these types of builds. I appreciate your patience. I have done my best to follow advice I have found previously, with perhaps some of my own innovation that I hope will pay off.

EDIT: 60ish views and no replies. So I either got it right, or so abysmally wrong that it's beyond recovery. Giving this thread one last bump before I let it wash away into oblivion.

I HATE this power. Not just for the fact that you can lift a chunk of earth from non-earth surfaces but because once you've ripped up that hunk of rock, there is no pit, or hole or any kind of evidence over what has happened. The ground is still just as smooth and unaltered as it was before you used this power.
  3. I am actually running CoH on an Asus 1201n. It's a 1.6 Atom dual core (though they process independently of each other) with the Nvidia ION chipset. I was able to play around with some modified utilities and can get the core clock speed at 2.0 stable, thought I usually keep it at 1.9. I have also been able to upgrade the ram to 4GB (the maximum the chipset will allow) and while I have to share some with the ION, for day to day browsing and YouTube videos it runs great.

In CoH, Paragon City on lowest settings I can get 25-30 FPS sustained. Sadly in the Rogue Isles or Praetoria that number drops down to a max of 25 with a more realistic number in the 13s for general running/jumping/smashing activities.

It ran reasonably well before Ultra Mode but ever since the implementation, I've noticed that despite hitting the rock bottom on the video settings I still can't quite get what I was once able to. I actually came onto this board to try and see if anyone could recommend software or .ini settings that might garner better performance.

In any event, the netbook is nice and light, easy to carry around and really great for day to day stuff, sans the battery life. Gaming, it will run games, but not very well. Especially if you have a quadcore 5850 at home waiting for you, there's just no comparison.

Netbooks have a way to go yet as far as ultra-portable gaming. It can run many titles well, but they are much older titles (GTA 3: Vice City and prior). So if that's the kind of experience you're looking for I say go for it. However, the middle of the road that this meets makes me wish I had opted out for a stronger CPU, or baring that, a collection of old ROMs/ASCII adventure games and a 12 hour battery.

Good luck with whatever you decide on.

EDIT: I think I may have posted too soon. ION has a new driver revision out. Installed and fired up CoH and at the lowest settings in Praetoria was getting a crisp 20-30 fps again. Going to play around with the settings some more when I have more time and post what I find for any one who might be interested.

  5. As much as I love the My Way parody on him, I think being the Juggernaut would be the worst. If he cannot be stopped once he starts moving, what happens when he trips?
  6. Using a thesaurus seems to be a pretty popular response in this thread, and for good reason. There are many free thesaurus sites available online, and they tend to draw from different word pools, so be sure to check more than just one.

A recent trick I discovered is nationalizing my character, or using a foreign language. Want to make a time-traveler named Chrononaut, but the name is taken? Try Krononaut, now you have a russian time traveler with the same core name. Tank Mage taken or just too generic? Panzer Magier has a nice ring to it, and gives a pretty strong slavic vibe, while still retaining the main concept.

Sometimes the mild tweak of nationalization can also add a new depth to your character concept you might not have considered before.
  7. Very curious to see how this will pan out. So many things to consider and that will be changed. I hope we can expect more information soon.
  8. This is the only time I wish I still had cable. Well this and the new Futurama that Comedy Central has been pimping out.

Without giving away too many details, can I ask if Sampson is still in the show? The way he left after season 3, is he just out of the show entirely or is he on like a walkabout?
  9. I miss the punk...

Never played Shadowrun tabletop (Only on Genesis) but I did play a lot Cyberpunk 2020 in high school. I miss those games, not the combat so much, but the stylization.
  10. To be fair, this is the type of character I've wanted to play since my inception into CoH as well. In fact, dual pistols is the main reason I came back to try this game out again, I didn't mind pre-ordering, it was something new.

But yes, I would like to see a ranged set that has a little bit of survivability, in the 'stand their and take it' sense. I don't think I'm alone on the sentiment either.
  11. Foxbat takes the cake on that one. In a previous thread, many months ago a similar conversation came up, where I found out that Foxbat is Deadpool but Foxbat was first and is, worse? They used the term expy, can't remember where the final vote on that went as far as who was first.
  12. The new content in GR, while well written, is painfully trivial in regards to difficulty. Leveling a new character in Praetoria purely off of mission arcs is no more complicated than pressing 1, 2, 3, 1 . Spawns are also notably smaller.
  13. Currently working on a DP/Kin in Praetoria I named Redpill.

Got him decked out in white, a leather trench coat with shades, a bandanna face mask all in a pinstripe suit.

    He moves like they do...

Power customization allowed me to tint his Kinetics line to an intense, shockingly bright green. Not unlike what one would see on an old monochrome CRT...

Really digging the flavor this concept brings to Kinetics.
  14. It's already been mentioned, but I'll just reiterate for my own 0.02.

Hasten - Minimal/FX only in PvP would be awesome, and probably pretty easy to implement. Tired of firey hands.

All Ice/Fire Melee weapons - A blast alternative would be great, as the animation is one of the main reasons I've never explored these sets adequately. They are too valuable to pass up for the set, yet force you thematically.

Finally Fire/Ice Breath - I typically play Technology oriented robot/automatons, stuff that does breath. Flamethrower hands or, chest, or... what not would be nice.
  15. Failure to Sense

    Ambushes - FFS

I'll throw my hat in on this one as well. I seem to have a particularly difficult time with Syndicate members. You'll come up on a spawn that is two or three +1/+2 LTs, and with heavy inspiration use, you can succeed by the skin of your teeth.

You attempt to rest before tackling the next spawn when you get ganked from behind by three more Syndicate who just happened to spawn and knows exactly where you are in relation to the building. If you survive that fight, brace yourself, because another spawn is en route.

It is frustrating to say the least, but thankfully we do have the option to skip a mission every 3 days. But when you're soloing them to experience the storyline, you miss out on the clues and dialogue through 'automagic' completion.
  16. He slotted a green in Rest, what a noob.

Certainly not a love letter for City of Heroes, but he did raise some valid points, and gave praise at times when it was appropriate. Not the best review, but not the worst. Take heed of the running and video settings issues, as these have been cited numerous times by your veterans in this thread.

Science isn't infallible. Just because some guy in a lab coat says it, doesn't make it absolute fact. A person who can be controlled so easily that they require no outside influence is broken at such a fundamental level that there is no saving them, better to let them self-destruct so that they can't spread their weakness to others.
    Wow... kinda scary their guy.

I really want to say something here... but I just don't think it's worth it. I've seen others refute your claims and yet still you cling ferociously to the idea that 'the human spirit can conquer all'. While I don't entirely disagree with your notion, I think it takes a healthy mind and body to have a healthy spirit. When either of these is sick or injured, it is quite common for the spirit to fail. Hence why those with an addiction often do need help.

But it's your ferocious stance on this, and the inability to waver, even slightly on your stance despite the bevy of logical arguments and evidence that have been provided for you that truly astonishes me. We're supposed to live in an age of enlightenment and reason, and yet still an argument like this is allowed to persist. It's almost like... you're mentally addicted to the idea that mental addiction is nonsense.
  18. My spandex costume is so awesome, I'm able to carry around 30+ individual pieces of salvage despite not having pockets.

My Assault Rifle/Dual Pistols never run out of ammo... Ever.

That influence/infamy is not currency. Currency is regulated with forced scarcity designed to prevent run away inflation.

The same effects of extensive medical treatment and a solid 8 hours of sleep can be accomplished in all of 10 seconds when you 'take a knee'.

Just because someone has wings doesn't necessarily mean they can fly.

    Flames. Can. Heal?

    Finally...

    Don't click the glowie.

    So, APB...

It looks good, but I'm still kicking myself for getting ripped off with Crimecraft. If it gets great reviews or has some sort of trial/f2p model will give it a whirl.
