We've never met, but Kegan vouches for you, so you're okay by me ^_~
Happy birthday! -
Urk. I've been dealing with this bug for the last two days. Either my pets don't show up in my pet window when I leave a mission, resulting in my not being able to dismiss the idiots until they get into combat (which snaps them back in - it literally tells me I have no summoned pets. They're like fire imps disguised as mercs
), or they're playing on the blasted elevators for ten minutes.
I tried Assemble the Team as well. That resulted in them running through the walls back to the last floor >_>
I agree, I'd rather have to resummon my pets every mission than have this headache. Twice now I've run gung-ho from an elevator into a spawn, only to discover that not only am I alone (a bad place to be), but even my FFG is playing on the elevators.
It's tedious, but I'm going to try dismissing them all before I leave missions and see if that helps. There used to be a command to dismiss all your pets at once, but I can't for the life of me remember what it was now.
Edit: Found it! /release_pets - just be careful as this kills everything, including stuff like FFG
Second edit: Well, I feel like a dunce now. The proper command - the one exclusively for Masterminds anyway - is a petcom command (Petcom_all dismiss) which is a little embarassing because I've been relying on Sandolphan's petcom binds since they were first written, so I should know this >_>
Right, anyway. Back to DXPing.

Quote:*just has to laugh* That summed up my first D&D experience right there. There were seven of us, and a bigger drama bomb, I have never seen.I've never been in a campaign or adventure worth being in that had more the... 7 people, tops, and even that was pretty directionless.
I like to have at least two different storylines going with different characters in case one stalls out due to RL invasion (which happens a lot >_> Can't be helped, though), but I try to avoid super-massive stuff in terms of the number of people involved.
This reminded me of the time I did try to run a big story. It was an absolude disaster because everyone (like, 20 people) had their own ideas of how to handle the situation, and were stepping on each others' toes to try and be the hero.
It just... Yeah. Herding cats is an apt phrase, if said cats are also rabid. -
I've been involved in quite a lot of meaningful RP. For me the trick is finding people I trust out-of-character to not just be in it for their own characters exclusively, or for other reasons (Cybersex, attention woman-of-ill-repute-ing, etc).
That said I did kind of just drop out of a group of really good RPers awhile ago due to major personality clashes out of character as well :/ Our characters got along famously, but as players, not so well. But enough about that.
Some of the best RP I've ever experienced was completely impromptu with all involved totally shooting from the hip, but some of the worst has come from the same, so it is sort of a mixed bag, and I'll agree with what's already been said about having someone to kind of help direct the flow.
The key to really great RP is, to my mind, understanding that characters are like plans - they never survive the opening conflict, and as such should be open to change except under certain circumstances.
My DM said it best recently when we were discussing an upcoming D&D campaign. "I never try to plan too far ahead. Instead I focus on rounding out where I want the characters to be at the start, then I let RP decide where they go from there."
To give an example, I've finally made a character I'm happy enough to keep the "Emerald Phase" name with. She has two very distinct, very different personalities right now. One is a hardened, almost robotic ruthless killing machine, when she's under Arachnos' control. The second is her "normal" self. It's sort of a forced split personality thing, where neither has any knowledge of the other courtesy of supplanted false memories and a psionic trap to keep anyone tampering with Arachnos' well-laid plans ... Yet.
Freeing her won't be as simple as just flipping a switch, and even when she is freed, there will be Serious Consequences. Ultimately I'd like to take her blue-side after GR, but if I find a group I enjoy RPing with that find a way to convincingly turn her one way or the other, so be it.
Half the fun, at least for players like me, is in not knowing just where our own characters' lives are going to take us.
*ahem* Sorry for the long-winded rambling. I do tend to get carried away when it comes to my creations. ^_~
TLDR version: Yes, I've been involved in quite a lot of epic, overarching RP. The two secrets for me have been to have a small group of regular, trustworthy players to RP with, and to be willing to go with the flow sometimes, but alsoo to remember to have fun. If you're not having fun, then there's just no point in trying
Edit:
Quote:Seriously? That is a little annoying >_> I don't mind long bios as much as I used to, if there's something about the character in there, but then, I tend to break bio lengths myself these days :PYaaaaaaargh. Okay, one week on I have an incredibly burning question to ask:
What is with all the purple bloody prose in character descriptions? People seem to have an incredible habit of rambling on for about five paragraphs talking about war, suffering, loss, etc etc, without telling you anything about the character. It bugs the living goolies out of me, and smacks of pretentiousness - even if some of these folk are really quite lovely.
I'll have to start paying more attention though. Now I'm kinda curious.

Quote:That would be awesome. Especially now that ten paces is walkable instead of "Big clunky slow-motion run" O.OY'know...I had this crazy idea of a duel in the arena. Only one shot is to be taken with Executioner's shot. This will be done between two Colonial era characters as they take 10 paces, turn, and fire. The first one hit loses :P
Good God, it's good to be back.
Also, Dual Pistols totally made me squee. My second character in CoH WAY back when was an AR/Dev ex-cop who signed on with First Strike Security, and between DP and the myriad of other new shinies they've added between then and now, she's finally reached her full concept.
It's just a shame Fox and Roughshod aren't around to see her bad-***-ness in action ^_^

I used to dual-box rather extensively, mostly having my Empathy/Dark defender at my beck and/or call when one of my regular heroes got waaaaaay in over her head (i.e. geting two carnie bosses within proximity of one another on a scrapper >_> That remains my most embarassing beatdown
)
Sometimes it's just fun to turn a blaster into a goddess of pain and destruction too. But FWIW I never, ever teamed while DBing because I'd much, much rather have a human player backing me up in that situation, than to be splitting my focus and probably getting everyone else killed
Edit to add:
Also, being Empathy/Dark made it easy to set up a system where the 'fender was on auto-follow with Tentacles on autocast (Ctrl+click, not "botted" type autocast).
I learned how to position both characters to maximize control/damage from TT while keeping their attention on the main character.
I also vividly remember some pretty epic AE battles with my BS/SD scrapper and 'fender duo before the former was even out of TOs yet. Running Hope taught me just how skeery Emp buffs can be -
-
Okay, seriously.
Should I just dismiss my pets every time I leave a mission? Just had someone whine at me for daring to visit the Black Market after hitting my salvage cap. Best part is I sent them off AWAY from the BM before the smartassery began.
Do people just not read the patch notes, particularly about MM minions persisting?
Grr.
/rant off
Sorry. I just.. dislike obtuse people who think they're being clever.
Edit for clarity -
For me, it was Castlevania 2: Simon's Quest, but in a special way. The game wasn't hard (Except for certain points of precision jumping), so much as hard to follow.
Case in point,
Quote:is supposed to mean something verrry differentHit your head on Deborah Cliff to make a hole
Anyway, actual, Nintendo hard games, I'd have to hand it to Top Gun, as above. I don't think I ever landed the dang plane -
-
Quote:*rimshot*The Kilowatt Kid (elec/sr scrapper) is already rolling on Virtue.
Likely rolling an Elec/Elec or Elec/Shield scrapper on Freedom for a static team as well.
Anyway, right now I'm having ENTIRELY too much fun with power customization. Like with the right shade of light gold I've discovered Gravity Control makes an excellent Light Control -
Pretty much have to agree with the above on finding a good RP VG. I'd offer, but ours is kind of in an ... inactive state right now.
To that end, what kind of RP you prefer might lend a torch to your searchPersonally, I prefer character-driven RP, where the characters are dynamic entities who may or may not have an overarching story going on, but where they're basically growing beyond initial concept.
Some people prefer story-driven RP where the overarcing story is the big focus, and others just want to have fun/light-hearted fluff.
So far as I know there's an abundance of all kinds, but finding it is the challenge. Good luck

Normally I don't post in Rook threads, but I've been reading from the very beginning, and the big difference between Rookery threads and the old fluff-bombers is that y'all aren't trying to derail other threads or going out of your way to boost post count by posting mindless one-liners like a spastic five year old on a sugar rush. It may be silly, but it's the kind of silly that still has some content worth reading. Nobody said the world had to be serious all the time, after all.
So, I totally agree here. The haters need to just get over themselves and stop harassing people over what they disagree with. Don't like it? DON'T READ IT. You have every right not to like something, but you have no right to harass others. Period.
Besides, It's one thread a day! And as has been said, it's not like these forums are exactly teaming with interesting discussion, TF requests, or anything else. Without the Rookery, these forums would be kinda boring.
Also, @Neko, re: your post on that other thread, on a personal note, I actually never knew one of the goals of the new-post-a-day thing was to allow new people an in. I just assumed it was to "start the story fresh", so to speak. That's actually a neat idea.
Anyway... I fully expect to catch negative rep for this, but I don't care. You guys are part of what makes Virtue unique from a lot of MMO communities I've been apart of in the past.
*slinks off to lurk againa*
Edi: And that took a lot longer to write than I anticipated. Apologies if I dropped that wall of text on anyone's toes there -
Quote:Popping back in to say, I couldn't agree more!I only had two goals this 2XP weekend; get a scrapper (19) and a tank (30) to level 35.
I failed both. I only got 'em to 34 and 32 respectively.
But I really don't care. I had a lot of fun helping other people hit their targets instead, and got involved in an impromptu ship raid... I really can't complain at all. Thanks for a great weekend, Virtue!I didn't hit my goal on Psy, but I came close, and had an absolute blast RPing while doing it, so it was totally worth it. This weekend revitalized my love of Cities, and this community
-
Well, I got my re-rolled tank-to-scrapper to 22 which was my main goal with her (Louisiana Rose), aaand the big victory was my Mind/Psi Praetorian answer to my retired mind/FF (TParapsychosis), which I took from 8-33 almost exclusively duoing dev content with her lover
That's, like, huge for me, since it took me two years to get my DDC that far, much as I love Dark
I was going to take said DDC from 40 to 50, but I didn't even log her in except to check the market once or twice.
So, yeah. All in all a pretty productive weekend. Now I just need to work out the kinks and start on a pre-50 IO build, now that I'm not outleveling SOs faster than I can buy 'em. -
I was having this problem, and I don't use AVG. I managed to fix it, so far, by logging in, then immediately hitting the "Log Out" button, and logging *back* in again.
I'm logged in through boards.cityofheroes.com also, if that's important to the cause
Windows Vista Ultimate 64-Bit SP2
Firevox version 3.0.12
Skype Extension for Firefox 3.3.0.3789
.NET Framework assistant 1.1
NoScript 1.9.7.7 (set to allow all CoH),
AdblockPlus 1.1
McAfee SiteAdvisor 1.8
EDIT: Okay, I've done some more checking and I've figured out why I kept getting logged out. My homepage was set default to bring up boards.cityofvillains.com where the new forums default, hero or villain, to boards.cityofheroes.com. I changed my homepage and it seems to be working fine now.
This may be completely unrelated, but hey, if it helps one person it's worth it.
Good luck, everyone -

I can't speak to Traps, but I can say I never use Time Bomb on my /Dev blaster, so I sure as heck wouldn 't use it on a Defender >_>
Gun Drone would make a kick-[censored] tier 9 for Defenders though. Also, seconding Triage Beacon getting the Gun Drone/FFG Mobility treatment. As it is I've never seen anyone even use it, short of an EB fight. -

Sounds like some ventured into Pocket D during the late night hours... lol
[/ QUOTE ]
Or the morning or afternoon hours.
I don't think there's a time when you can safely venture there -
Urgh. Y'know that Hardcase mission (Second mission) that has a TON of wailer ambushes, then at the end you have to fight two bosses - both sonic, both rezzers (Freakshow Sonic Tank and a Wailer King)? Yeah, I was on my DDC, I had JUST finished the tank an the wailer king was on his second life. He had, literally, ONE dark blast from death, then *YOINK!* Mapserved >_<;
This had better be important ;_; -
Happy Birthday, AA!

Good to see Dauntless are still active. I don't have any characters appropriate for the group, but I wanted to wish you luck with your recruitment drive anyway
(Well, that's a half-truth. I have my elven princess trapped in a magic longbow, but I don't play her enough to justify taking up an SG slot)
[/ QUOTE ]
Thanks for the well-wishing.
And an elven princess trapped in a long-bow, eh? So, would your alt be the longbow, or the player using it?
[/ QUOTE ]
A little from column A, and a little from column B, actually.
I never did work out all the fine details since she literally began as a joke/play on my retired WoW (Blood Elf) Hunter, but the character is, essentially, Magical Girl meets High Fantasy Kheldian.
The elf's spirit/soul/whatever you want to call it was shattered long ago and trapped inside a simple longbow, intended as an ironic/cruel end. The bow passed into relative indignity for generations, completely forgotten until it came into the hands of the daughter of a couple of MAGI agents.
The spirit, sensing a kindred connection with the girl (Latent magical ability) offered to merge their souls in times of stress or battle in exchange for a chance to shape the events of the world again.
... Though I haven't quite worked out how an elf came to exist in Earth Prime just yet. Normally I don't deal in high fantasy in the CoHVerse, but she was an exception
Every time I think about cannibalizing her SOs/IOs for another alt, I take her out for a spin, Stunning Shot -> Bonesmasher a red/purple boss, and manage to *just* convince myself I might play her again at some point.
I also need to redo her costumes, badly. The sci pack will help that a *lot* because her "elf" form is supposed to be much taller than her human formAnyway, I'm hoping that all made as much sense in text as it did In my head, but I'm posting Before Coffee, so no promises.
Edit: And I just had to remind myself why I don't play her much. Blasters are just waaay too squishy for me (Archery/Energy). My only 50 is a Dark/Regen scrapper who, when all goes well, is the epitome of safe. I've never really hit that "Don't freaking die" stride with Kal. Buildup+Aim+Fistfull+Explosive just results in half-dead, very angry spawns >_>
Aaaaanyway... -

Swear to God, if this turns into another "24 hour Miracle of Birth" channel like TLC, I'm gonna hurt someone in corporate -

"Welcome to Virtue! Where everyone is either a farmer.. or role-playing a farmer's blossoming daughter!"
But.. to give you an idea of the non-agricultural fare available, in the last three hours, there was: a Hamidon raid, at least four Rikti ship-raids, numerous calls in globals for TF/SF's, and some entertaining role-play next to the lav in the Talos tram.
[/ QUOTE ]
And to add to what the always lovely Angel said, for what it's worth, I get non-AE invites in pretty much every level range daily, and that's when I *don't* have my LFT flag up(INcluding one ITF invite on my 47 scrapper night-before-last, but I was feeling sick so I had to sit it out. ANYway)
-
<QR> Same boat here, OP. I don't have time to farm, and literally have zero patience for Wentworth's, so I've dug my own grave for inf. Sitting on about 40-45M right now which is probably going to my Illusion controller once she hits 50.
I have a new scrapper in the works, but I'll never be able to IO her out the way people on the forums do, but for what it's worth, my old standby DM/Regen is still using SOs and gets by fine against anything short of burst damage EBs/AVs (Silver Mantis, I'm looking at you. Spikey-[censored] witch.)
