I can honestly say that I have never had an issue with the method the devs use to communicate planned outages. Also, being as I am capable of basic addition and subtraction, I don't need any links to a website to tell me what PST is in my local time zone.

Bought times two, thank you for kicking so much ***, guys!

An excellent choice, and by far the best arc I've ever played in the MA, storywise.
-
Ohh, you just need to argue. I got it now. Ok, you win! I was wrong. Ten points for Gryffindor!
-
Certainly didn't mean to imply it had no negative effects, just that despite those effects it's not likely to go anywhere. Hope that helps clear up the difficulty you had understanding my post.

Log into one of them 50s, ought to sort you out. I think it sometimes forgets you have the L50 character and gets a little crosscocked.

I have a feeling the rep system will remain in effect and also remain anonymous. Why? Because it serves a couple different functions: 1. It allows for people to get their yayas out on you without cluttering the forums, and 2. It does not allow for retaliation, which precludes long and drawn out internet slapfights. Now, rather than have illiterate leetspeak rants posted on the forums, which are then responded to and derail threads and need endless moderation, the illiterate leetspeakers can just send a -rep saying "lol ur stupid stop psoting" and it never taints the thread in question. Heck, you can't even reply or engage in a -rep vendetta, because you have no idea who sent the -rep. From a mod's point of view, this is a great thing.
You can report, and I guess the mods will do something, but you won't ever know who wronged you or what punishment they received. Report for sure, but as far as dealing with it on the forum goes, the best tactic is to ignore it completely. Making a thread or a reply to a thread commenting on the -rep comment just feeds the ******* and makes him or her more likely to do it again. Why? Because whereas before they had to assume they got under your skin, by posting, you confirm it. I guarantee that whoever -repped you and make the remarks in question has the biggest nerd boner right now if they saw that they got to you to the point that you posted about it. -
Here's my advice, gleaned from quite literally decades of networked gaming/MMOs/MUDs/God knows what else.
- Be polite. People like that and remember it.
- To the best of your ability, use proper grammar and punctuation. It's sadly less common than it ought to be, and you will stand out. Judging from your posts, this won't be an issue.
- Assume that when someone gives you advice, they mean well and are not insulting you, your build, your playing skills, or your family. After almost five years in this game, I am still learning new tricks from fellow players.
- It's a game, so have a good time and do your best to help others have a good time.
- When someone decides to be a ********, don't respond in kind. Put them on ignore, report them if they are abusive, but don't give them the pleasure of goading you into a response.
- This one is CoX specific: you don't need any specific team makeup for any of the game content. When someone says they need a tank or a kin or a healer, they are incorrect. Some of the best times in this game are found when you form up a Faathim TF with three scrappers, four tankers and one terrified blaster, and proceed to finish it in two hours.
- This one is CoX specific: Don't do "boss farms" or "AE farms," at least not for your first characters. The game is big and filled with stories and stuff; enjoy it.
- Nothing of value is said in zonewide chat channels. This one is occasionally untrue, but those times are few and far between. When you read something in broadcast that sounds completely idiotic, it doesn't need a response.
There's plenty more but I think this will get you rolling and help you have a good time. -
Thanks for the clear and concise answer!

Does my damage resistance reduce the total damage shared or only the portion I receive? Like if I get hit with a 100 point attack and I have 50% resistance, do we all share 100 points and I resist 50% of my share, or do we all share 50 points?
-
Why would WoW raising their level cap in any way affect CoX? Nobody looks at CoX and thinks "Oh my God, the level cap is thirty less than WoW, this game is a piece of ****." Other games and their level caps are meaningless to this game. Is your next question about how TF2 adding hats will affect CoX enhancements?

So can we change our handle even if we are not affected by the suffix issue?
edit:
Sweet!
edit the second: What's stopping people from emailing and claiming to be someone they are not to change people's forum handles without their consent? In other words, I email in claiming to be, for example, BillZBubba and ask to be changed to NancyDrewFan (please don't kill me). Are you checking against email addresses on the account info? -
My very first ITF (very recent like around January, I had a bit of a break) I got two purples. The second one, I got one purple, the third, another one. I assumed that everyone got one on the ITF, and was a bit miffed when my luck ran out

Wow, what a thread. It's confirmed a few of my beliefs about City of Heroes:
- Our devs are awesome and genuinely listen to the majority of the playerbase
- Our devs are awesome and come up with kick-*** new things for us to enjoy
- No matter how awesome some thing is, some whiners will complain
This is a great thing, Positron et al. Thanks so much! -
Quote:Hilariously incorrect. Masterminds are alpha soakers and buffers and debuffers and tanks and damage dealers all at once. My MM is an in-your-face spawn-aggroing bad-*** ************. You can play an MM as a pantywaisted backline coward, but it's a waste.1. Mastermind are controllers not Brutes or Stalkers; therefore, you should not run up to enemy groups to attack them. There are some exceptions which I wil go over, but as run you should you mindless minions to do you dirty work.
Quote:2. Your minions cannot protect you from 50 feet away. If you are being attacked, your pets cannot attack your attackers if they are attacking someone else. More importantly, they cannot shield you from attack and are not empowered (Inherient Mastermind ability) to fight faster and better.
Quote:3. You pets should be your primary powers. This is not say that you should not have any powers to protect yourself, but you should seek to add enhancements and powers to your pets first. Any powers for your character should be considered secondary.

Very confused as to why anyone would care about negative (or positive) rep. What effect does it have on you?
-
Every team I've been on has beaten him by doing damage that exceeded his available hitpoints, sometimes by a large margin due to regen and resistances.
-
Oh, goodie, a place that I can post that I don't care one bit about PvP and not get chewed out. I think that every second that the devs devote to PvP in this game is a second better devoted to counting ceiling tiles or going out for a nice cup of coffee. I don't miss the CoP at all, don't care that the i13 or whatever PvP revamp gutted the PvP community, and certainly am not fussed that GR might not allow zone PvP in every new zone.
Other things that are blah and can come or go as the devs please:- Powerset respecs
- RP anything, including adding crap like walking or whatever that has no positive ingame effect
- Any changes to drop rates so "casual players" can purple out their warshades

Quote:Well, I learned something today. I figured that was how it worked because the zones fail sometimes without the whole server going down, and also the way the markets are per-faction rather than per-server.You are correct, a "server" is not a single machine, it's usually a cluster of machines/databases.

My wife and I openly refer to ourselves as such on Virtue and the only thing we ever get is "I wish my husband/wife would play with me!" What's awesome is that more often than not I am playing a female character and she's playing some macho looking dude. Virtue is clearly the classy server :monocle:

Quote:MercsIt seems like, looking at the stats, that Mercs would be the best, at least at dishing out damage while still having some CC abilities ... even with a potentially gimpy medic (is it?).
Ranged seems like a good thing, as it should keep them near me and so under my supremacy buff and in range for Twilight Grasp heals moreso than the more melee-focused primaries (necro, ninja)...
Bots seem potentially gimped with their tier 2 pet being a healer? How do they compete with damage?
Anyway ... what are your thoughts on the best? I'll likely mostly solo PvE to level as I can only play at odd times, but love PvP as well.
Suggestions on a secondary would be useful as well, though I think I'm pretty sold on Dark.
Thoughts?
Thanks- -medic closes to engage due to a different max range from the others (at least that's what it seems like to me)
- -cones are extremely narrow (think 5 degrees)
- -Tier 3 pet has long recharges on AoEs and Tier 2 pets have ridiculously long recharges on controls, and they use them at stupid times (tear gas grenade on last minion of spawn at 10% health
)
- +All ranged all the time assuming you keep them there
- +Good resistances
Bots- -More fragile than you expect at first
- -Feels a little weak on damage before you upgrade things to the max
- -CLANK CLANK CLANK CLANK *blocks door*
- +Tons of AoE once upgraded and not on retardedly long timers
- +Prot bots bubble you and your other bots, heal, and do good damage assuming you slot for damage like you should
Necro- -Melee only mainly, ranged attacks are lacking
- -retarded AI really enjoys keeping your grave knights at range, spamming Dark Blast while Headsplitter gathers dust, so some positioning is necessary
- -Lich occasionally mouths off about you being next on his list
- +All kinds of toxic/smashing/lethal/dark damage once upgraded
- +Lich is a control machine and assuming you position him right he pretty much neuters every spawn
I can't address ninjas or thugs, never played them.
Secondaries all offer something but I find FF the most boring and surprisingly not the highest in safety. Dark is hard to go wrong with, same with traps. I'm levelling a necro/pain ATM and things die twice. My wife is levelling a bots/traps (bats/tarps?) and she is loving it. Like Smurphy said, any primary is pretty much a murder machine in PvE.
As far as PvP, I don't know. I've never PvP'd on my mastermind, and the only times I've come across MMs in PvP I've killed them really fast. I'm told this is because they didn't know what they are doing; this is entirely possible because I sure don't know what I am doing in PvP so if I kill you, you must have been asleep or something. -
Quote:Right here! What, what? What are you talking about, -another- double xp weekend?
-
I had an awesome weekend and got a lot accomplished in game (and out
). Just like every other weekend, only I seem to have gained a few extra levels this time.

And yet, here we are, with lots of folks having no issues. Of course, nobody makes a thread to say "hey, no troubles here, aces!" so we don't notice.
The trouble here is really that some folks don't understand that there isn't just two "ends" to talk about. There's the player's end, NCSoft's end, and then there is the entire mess of internets between the two. It's entirely possible that something between the player and the servers is crosscocked and making life miserable. This means that there isn't much that NCSoft or the player can do. It sucks, but that's how it is. Of course, that's not to say all is perfectly well; I'm getting the odd ten-second mapserver problem every few hours during this extremely busy time but certainly not the epic issues some folks report.
tl;dr: If a problem happens for some folks but not for others, all using the same service, that means that it's probably not entirely caused by a problem on the service provider's end.
