Tantamount to merging all the servers into one, yes.

Tantamount to the common usage of "merge all the smaller servers so they're all as busy as Freedom and Virtue" no.

That is, if what I think is being announced is still being announced and has not been replaced by an announcement of an announcement to be announced at a later date.
You're finally going to make Blaster Frozen Aura work like the Tanker version? And make Dark Servant stop expiring?

2: +Defense builds are a lot easier if you only focus on Rng and maybe AoE, so it makes more sense now to actually use range as a defense.

Those two reasons together kind of work against Blapping nowadays, which means that the strong secondary attacks don't have as much use as they did some issues ago when doing Moar Damage Now was the Blaster's main defense. Now a Blaster can actually get defense at range, fire from range when mezzed, and get a complete attack chain at range.

However, the secondary design was valid for quite a long time, and while I think future secondaries are going to be a little more tilted towards utility and range than as melee-heavy as Fire, Electric, and Energy, I doubt that they are going to go too far away from normal "several melee powers" design.
Well, I don't know that they balance around people who are IO'ed to the gills. I think its probably a minority of overall players who have builds like that.

I mean, sure, my AR Blaster is moderately IO'ed because being able to slot five sets of Positron's Blast is a walk in the park with that Primary, but I don't think Castle is going to re-balance the set based on that possibility.

It is kind of hard to predict any design trends with Blaster secondaries, since we've only ever had one added, in Mental Manip. And I think most of us were a little baffled that it included a ranged cone.

Yes, people sometimes have reasons for just wanting to respec, but it's not a bad thing to inform them of the alternatives.
These are all reasonable things to do when offering advice.

After you've answered the original question.

  6. Blaster secondaries aren't that hard to understand. They give you a little control, some attacks, and a self buff.
  7. Blasters have a problem?

I hadn't noticed. Seriously, since Castle fixed Defiance, the AT is pretty great.

Sadly, this is way too true.

The one thing I was a bit disappointed in with Going Rogue is that the old zones didn't get the "ultra mode" treatment. I would absolutely love it if, over the next year or so, they spend at least one or even two issues focusing on revamping existing art and content instead of adding new stuff. I'd love to see Boomtown starting to be rebuilt, Faultline progressing even further (maybe even a big push to officially rename the zone back to "Overbrook"), new ultra mode textures rolled out to at least the starting hero and villain zones, etc.
During my hiatus from CoH, I played another game for a while, which re-did all the content in their old starting zones, and it made the new player experience so much nicer.

That's a little different than a graphics re-vamp for the old zones, but I think both are essential future projects for the game.

The missions in Praetoria and the Tip Missions are just so much better designed than much of the old content, that transitioning out of Praetoria may come as a nasty shock to new CoH players who start out there and then come over to Paragon.

PS: I think we can leave Faultline alone until we do something with Perez Park, Boomtown, Dark Astoria, Creys Folly and the other zones that are essentially Big Boxes of Monsters right now.
  10. Malta has a company policy against excessive twirling.
  11. Over the years, just about everything has been proposed as potential new powersets. I think an MA based secondary has a lot of possibilities.

If you want to go with a first power immob, then there's all kinds of ways to do it. You could go with a something mystic like "Rooting Chi" or for the more natural approach, say "Paralytic Dart" and borrow one of the origin power animations.

Alternatively, copy Energy Manip and give it a Power Thrust clone. Hell, just copy power thrust and remove the glow.

The rest of a set would be pretty easy to fill out with various MA powers.

  13. At one point, my SG on Virtue had an alt night on Victory, this was back before we got more slots, so we went to another server to help out the people with most of their slots full.

So, with the free transfers, I moved over my two highest level characters from Victory, an MA/DA Scrapper and a Plant/Ice Dom to Virtue. And punted a level 12 blaster I may not keep to Victory.

So tell me (keeping in mind the thread), what's new that I can expect when I log in?
Gregor Robertson has mandated a bike lane down the middle of Steel Canyon.

Edit: Also, Quatchi is now a giant monster wandering through the city.
  15. The correct answer is Bots/Storm MM.

    Well then.

    Bots/Storm. Good times.

    AR and what?

Energy is always good. Boost Range + lots of cones should be a fun time. I have a 50 AR/Ice that I enjoy, it gives you many tools for safety and control, and build up, which Devices lacks.
  18. Fortunately for me, I pre-purchased online. But a fellow Canadian in my SG reports that no local stores of any kind (Gamestop, BestBuy, Future Shop, etc) have the GR boxes available.

I will do a check myself this week to see if thats true. I suspect this is the same situation as when GvE launched, where the boxes won't show up in Canadian stores for weeks or months after they do in the US.

If that does turn out to be the case, it is pretty sad for a game being lead by a Canadian at the moment.

Come on War Witch, time to cross-check your marketing people into shape.

  20. All this hand wringing does seem poorly timed An expansion is launching in two days and the population is going to spike up dramatically. My SG alone has seen about ten re-subs in the last couple of days, and it isn't showing signs of slowing down.

Many players are going to come back to check out GR, when CoV launched the population went up by something like 30,000 players, back in the day when we got a subscriber number info. So, there is going to be a significant influx of revenue to the game over the next two to three months at a minimum.

Granted, many people will come back for a short amount of time, but that's life, and its not like the money they already spent on the game goes away with them. GR is going to keep CoH going for a while yet, and the incarnate system coming in the future will people back as well. The short term 1-2 year future of the game seems pretty bright.

Yeah, CoH is a small part of the overall revenue picture for NCSoft, but that has always been the case. If the game becomes a money loser, NCSoft will kill it eventually, as they did with Auto Assault, Tabula Rasa, and other games. The odds of that happening in the next 48 months seem extremely low.

    FF needs love

Whether it is sounding like the rath of 1000 angry whales, or having a bunch of useless powers, it seems to be a constant in CoH that something has to be screwed up with FF.
  22. Going after the hyper-saturated fantasy MMO niche seems like it would be a huge waste of time.

To be honest, I'm not that enthusiastic about CoH2. Sequels tend to want to fix what was wrong with the first game. That's going to require a very careful understanding of what was fun (even if it didn't work) and what wasn't. Everquest, IMO, did OK on that score, from all accounts FFXIV sucks, so I'm not hopeful.
I think the developers here have shown a pretty good understanding at what was and wasn't fun in CoH with the changes over the last few years. I'd be really interested in what Castle and Co could do if they got to design a powers and AT system from the ground up.

A new version of CoH with all the improvements to content and play built in from the ground up would be worth playing.
