    A Question

    What's a "defender"?

Oh, you mean those healers that gimp themselves by skipping their heals?

I tell you, I see so many Force Field healers that skipped their heals, Sonic healers too. It makes me sad that people don't realize that a healer's job is to stand there and crank out as many green numbers as they can. They think they can skip their heal powers and call themselves a "defender", but I'm on to em! They're just trying to leech XP by putting all these useless bubbles around me and dropping toys all over the ground! And then they have the nerve to attack, like they can actually hurt anything!

Don't these people realize their only purpose in the game is to heal the tank?!
  2. Invuln or Shield.

I'd give the edge to Shield because it's taunt aura is also a damage boost for you. Only downside is you can't use Spines with Shield, so Electric becomes your best choice for AoE.

I'll be happy if they just get rid of the damn multi-zone hunt mission.

No, they won't. Elude has only been rendered redundant by extensive use of IO sets, which are not necessary to play the game.

Like I said before, if they change Elude just because it becomes pointless when you slot a bunch of set IOs, it is the same as saying IOs are required to play the game. I don't see the devs suddenly making a complete 180 degree reversal of the stance they have held since IOs were introduced. They are optional and will remain so for the foreseeable future.

One of the things that has kept me playing is the fact that I don't have to spend all my time getting the best equipment in order to make my characters any good. It's the main reason I don't play WoW, and I imagine there are a significant number of players here that feel the same about it.

I have several heavily IOed characters that I enjoy playing. I also have a much larger number of characters that have very few IOs or none at all that are just as much fun to play. I like the fact that my spot on teams isn't determined by how many set bonuses I have. I really don't want to see this game go the way of having a gearscore that you have to meet in order to do anything.
  5. You know what breaks my immersion in the game?

The fact that I'm sitting in a chair looking at a computer screen. Then, just when I start to feel like I'm really a superhero, a cat jumps into my lap and ruins the whole thing by bringing me back to reality.

Actually, that would work pretty good. Half of Sonic's damage is energy damage, so it would light your oil slick as well.
  7. The rarest stalker combo probably is Martial Arts/Dark Armor now that I think about it.

The rarest primary and the rarest secondary, so it stands to reason that it would be the rarest combo.
  8. I wouldn't have a problem displaying my first name.

I would have a serious issue displaying my full name though. There would be some identity theft concerns that I'm sure a lot of other people would have issue with as well.

Until such a time as a real name is required, Claws will be fine.

Umm, could it be because IOs weren't even on the drawing board when they designed the set?

I very much doubt the devs will ever change anything about a powerset just because IOs make it redundant. If they DID, it would be the same thing as saying "Yes, you need IOs to play the game", which is very much the opposite of the stance they have kept since issue 8.
  10. With a full fury bar Eviscerate hits like a Mack truck. And it can hit 5 enemies at once like a Mack truck. Does it really matter that it has a long animation when nothing is going to be getting up after you use it?

Shockwave....I'm torn on this one. I like it, but I don't like it. I've gone through numerous builds on my Claws/Regen scrapper both, with and without it, and I really can't say it's made a whole lot of difference. I would skip it on a WP brute, simply because knocking things away from you is somewhat counterproductive if you want to keep your regen rate high. (I'd skip it on a Claws/Invuln as well for similar reasons)

Yeah, you'll have that when you get into the game. Welcome aboard!

I got City of Heroes/Villains last week and finally decided on a character I liked. I made a DW/SR Brute. I like being able to run up and hit stuff and I am enjoying the mechanics of the game. Downside is running out of endurance and running low on health when doing missions solo.

What I am trying to get is some insight in tactics for a Brute so I can fix some of the problems I am having.
I'm guessing you're still pretty low level (under 20). After you get to 22 and slots Single Origin enhancements, and hopefully have Stamina most of those problems should get better.

    Quote:
For Primary power I was doing good with accuracy/endurance enhancements. I didn't even know DW had combos until an hour ago so I might have to find some way to respec so I can get nimble strike. Are there powers I should avoid like taunt?
Honestly, you can get by without the combos. That said, I DO like the Attack Vitals combo. Blinding Feint + Attack Vitals is a pretty standard attack string for Dual Blades characters. I wouldn't go out of your way to respec into Nimble Slash.

You don't need Taunt to be a brute, but you'll want to take it if you want to fill a tanking role on teams. If you're planning on soloing most of the time it is very skipable.

    Quote:
I am really confused with secondary powers because the I was going more passive tank, when it seems the only real way to go is active tank. I didn't know I can have all the toggles for SR on at once. Should I get the passive powers? What about elude/brawler and quickness? Are they any good?
I'll keep this part short: You want ALL of Super Reflexes. Your goal here is to get all 3 positional defenses (melee, ranged, and AoE) to 45% or higher. You need all the toggles and all the passives to help with that. So that's 6 powers you need.

Practiced Brawler is your mez protection. It is absolutely MANDATORY for a brute to take their mez protection. You can't fight if you're sleeping or held, and if you can't fight your team is in trouble. Slot it for recharge and put it on autofire so you don't have to worry about it. (you can put a power on autofire by holding the Ctrl button and clicking on it)

Quickness is a power that gives you a permanent 20% boost to your recharge, and a boost to your running speed. It doesn't need any slots in it at all, just put a single run speed enhancer in it and you're good. You want this power.

Elude is skippable once you get to your goal of 45% defense, but you may want to have it as an "Oh S***!" button until you get there.

I wanted to go leaping as my travel power because I am Ninja and it gives a nice bonus to defense.
Leaping is a good pool to pick. Take Combat Jumping to get to Super Jump. Do NOT take Jump Kick, it is a really pathetic attack that will force you to redraw your swords. Super Jump is my personal favorite travel power. Nice and fast with good upward mobility.

    Quote:
    Is acrobatics worth getting?
No, after you have Practiced Brawler you won't need it at all. Practiced Brawler does everything Acrobatics does and more, and it does it better while costing less endurance.

    Quote:
I am also under the impression that stamina is a must have and that powers you get after level 40 aren't that useful. It also seems like having fighting power pool is good to have.
You don't NEED Stamina, but it is a very nice power to have. It makes your endurance recover faster, so it's value should be apparent to you there. Health is also a plus, it increases your regeneration rate, which will be nice since you have no self heal power in your secondary. I recommend Hurdle to open the pool since you said you wanted to go with leaping.

The Fighting pool is nice. It has a couple attacks (you have to take one to open the pool, but you won't be using it, or at least you shouldn't be). It also has Tough, which gives you some resistance to smashing and lethal damage (the most common types in the game). The last power in the pool is the one you want it for, Weave. Weave will help you get closer to your goal of 45% defense.

Sorry for the wall of text, but any help or insight would be great.
That wasn't a wall of text. You had punctuation and an understanding of grammar

    Always glad to help.

  12. I usually focus on E/Ne defense on WP builds.

With Tough and Mind Over Body and regeneration I don't have to worry so much about S/L (though I do try to get at least some, so I'm not trying to resist everything), Fire and Cold attacks are some of the rarest in the game, so I don't worry about them too much.

I try to get E/Ne above 35%, and S/L to around 30% and call it good there. Between Heightened Senses and Weave my F/C defense usually ends up around 25% or so, which is usually enough.

I can't post any Mid's builds, but I like Eradication in PBAoEs for Willpower characters. It has a couple things that really help: A large chunk of E/Ne defense, and a 2.25% HP bonus (which is one of the larger ones you can get), I fill in the last couple slots with Scirocco's Acc/Rech and Dam/Rech for an extra 10% regen bonus.

Kinetic Combat is nice for S/L, and I like to fill in the last 2 slots with Smashing Haymaker (or whichever one gives an 8% regen bonus for 2 slots) in my ST attacks.

4xMocking Beratement is nice in Taunt for a little more S/L defense.
  13. I love tinkering with Mid's and seeing what kind of numbers I can come up with. I can probably put together a functional build for just about any powerset combo there is....even if I've never played it.

Now, with that said, would you like to guess how many of my live builds have been meticulously planned out?

    2. I have planned out and stuck to exactly 2 builds out of all 25 characters I regularly play. I like to get a general idea of what I want to do in Mid's shortly after I create a character. But it doesn't always work out how Mid's says it should. I frequently revise plans when I realize that I need this other power more than what I had planned to take here, and the whole build just goes sideways from there.

It usually works out in the end, but it very seldom looks like I thought it would when I started.
  14. Thanks.

I'm downloading a driver now. Looks like I downloaded one of their betas last time I updated my driver. The nvoglv.32dll is a new one, and it's been the problem consistently.

I dug around a little bit and found one of the slightly older drivers that I know worked with my system, so I'm going to give that a shot and see what happens.
  15. I keep crashing, and the message that pops up has that file name in it every time as being the source of the problem.

It's driving me absolutely nuts, and preventing me from even finishing a mission. I only get about 20 minutes of play time before I crash, so I can't do anything but short radio missions. I've been working on the same mission with my brute now for 3 days because I have crashed trying to finish it every time.

Any help or advice would be appreciated.

Yes, they have control over the percentage chance that something will drop.

No, they do NOT have control over whether or not something will drop for just your character alone. Any change to a percentage chance they make changes it for everyone equally.

They are not out to get you, I can assure you of that.

But if you want to be paranoid and insist that the devs have a vendetta against you and ONLY you.....well.....bye then.

It is RANDOM. The probability is NOT a guarantee. The probability of a purple drop is something like 1 in 5000. that means you have that percentage of a chance of getting one. It does NOT mean you a guaranteed a purple after every 5000 kills.

I played my DM/SR brute for weeks, running missions at +0/x8, and got nothing, no purples, barely any rares. I filled up my recipe inventory with Common IO recipes and temp powers.

I logged my Claws/Regen scrapper in and killed a Night Widow in RV that dropped an Armageddon. It was the first and only thing I had attacked since I logged in.

You went through a streak where the random number generator was not being kind to you, that's all.

Yes, you can move around and do whatever you like, as long as it doesn't involve attacking. It's also a toggle, so you can shut it off whenever you want, but it has a 30 second limit so you can't stay phased all the time (probably to prevent exploitation in escort missions, among other things)

You can phase, hit IH, wait until your health is full and any debuffs have worn off, then drop the phase and go to town on em. It's a nice power that I never considered taking until I did my PvP build, and now I'm considering it for my other regens too.

Well, it occurred to me when I was in a Council mission being shot by at least 8 Marksmen, that I was going to die.....because that's what regens do when they get slowed that much.

Then I remembered that I actually have Phase Shift on this build and popped it. The 30 seconds it lasts is plenty of time for all those slows to wear off and get back into fighting shape.

It is kind of an interesting way around Regen's complete lack of any debuff resistance. Just phase until they wear off. It won't work on all the debuffs in the game, but if you find you're going to die because your heals have been slowed into tiny dots on your tray it's a pretty good solution
  19. Actually, I looked into it and there's not a whole lot I can do that's appreciably better than what you have.

I can do an insanely good level 50 build, but I can't improve much on a build meant to exemp in the 20s. Lack of the Fighting pool is leading to somewhat anemic defense, but it can't really be helped without completely redoing your build.

If you already have the purples, and the character is already level 50, you should be okay with the build you have there. I upped the defense on it, and got a nice chunk more regen, but I did it using sets that start in the 30's (Numina's mostly)

Sorry, I can't improve on it enough to where I'd call it definitively "better".

The experiment was to run merit generating content, freeze at 30, and then IO out all the powers I had at 30 using the merits earned for random rolls and the market, once all powers had their recipies set aside, then unfreeze, go to level 35, and repeat, again at 40, then again at 45, and finally arrive at 50 fully IO'd.

I was doing that with a Plant/Thorn Dom and a Plant/TA controller since the builds would be comparable just to check and see how the speeds compared. Lack of teaming opportunities on red side, lack of TF content in the appropriate level ranges, and an anemic black market have pretty much made the experiment an exercise in frustration and I'm bringing it to a close without completing it.

The Plant/TA has been a fully IOd out level 50 for months, so I started an Earth/TA controller and it's a fully IOd 50 as well, I then started a Kin/Ice defender which is a fully IOd out 50 and the Sonic/Ice I started after that is a level 47 that has all the IOs waiting for when he hits 50. I started a Rad/Fire that's a level 35 now and will be unfreezing and moving on in 2 more pool C recipes.

The Dom is still level locked at 30 and has been for months. I got a Miracle +, and an Oblit Quad today after a Silver Mantis SF, and I'm still 9 Pool C recipes off of being able to switch to AE to generate the Pool As I need.

I'd like to say I spent the exact same amount of time playing on blue side as I have red side in this experiment, but that would be a lie. I've spent about 25% more time red side and am much less than 25% along on the build.

So when GR comes out all my villians, but especially my doms, are saying toodles permanently to the black market and the isles.

With the upcoming market merge....your dillema is going to become a thing of the past. There will be no need to move your Dominators blueside to get around lack of recipe availability, because everything will be available to everyone. So if you like playing redside, you won't have to move them unless you want to do so for other reasons.
