Help please! Will it be necessary to have a full real life name displayed as a handle to post on these forums in the future?

Thanks in advance for any responses.

No. Because NCSoft is not Blizzard.

A fact I'm thankful for every time I fire up COH.

Ever? I seriously doubt anyone is really clairvoyant, so it's a question that cannot be answered.

Having said that, NCSoft isn't Blizzard. I seriously doubt it'd ever be a consideration.

Is Blizzard really doing that? Why? That makes no sense to me.

yeah, it makes very little sense.

On the one hand, I can see the desire to clean up their community; ours is generally nice and respectful, while theirs... imagine the reputation of freedom ^100.

On the other; a fair number of their less savory members aren't even going to blink at their names being shown. While at the same time a number of their desirable productive forum members will leave due to very real privacy concerns.

Think of the quality of their forums, and what goes on there...and why making people use their real names and such might be of use.

Yes, it's that bad over there. If you are a rampant WoW troll, and a potential employer searches the internet for you--all your flame-bait can turn up.

Hooray for CoX.

There are no words for what this community, and the friends I have made here mean to me. Please know that I care for all of you, yes, even you. If you Twitter, I'm MrThan. If you're Unleashed, I'm dumps. I'll try and get registered on the Titan Forums as well. Peace, and thanks for the best nine years anyone could ever ask for.

As pointed out above, "Never say never" is appropriate here.

But we haven't hear anything.

And yes, they are. They're hoping it will be a resolution to John Gabriel's Greater Internet F-Wad Theory (Warning: Strong language if that bothers you)

Just a thought - it's probably best not to discuss the actions of other MMO developers or their forums, unless you fear not the mighty threadlockhammer...

Yeah, discussing this much further is probably grounds for thread locking.

Personally, I hope they ignore the rage their announcement stirred up and go forward with it. I think it's a horrible horrible idea paved with good intentions. I have absolutely nothing invested in Blizzard's products (At least until SC2), and with that in mind; I think it's a great social experiment that I'd like to see the result of.

I'd imagine that should the staff here contemplate such a move, they'd discuss it with the community, so we wouldn't be blindsided.

I'm not worried.

I wouldn't have a problem displaying my first name.

I would have a serious issue displaying my full name though. There would be some identity theft concerns that I'm sure a lot of other people would have issue with as well.

Until such a time as a real name is required, Claws will be fine.

I personaly see this matter quite a bit larger then just 'talking about some other game'.

This is the 'expected new level of internet&reallife', those who still care somewhat about their privacy i believe should be somewhat free to discuss this. It was NCsoft earlier then made a 'master'account to manage all your NCsoft game accounts, will NCsoft go for the same method or will they provide a 'global accountname' but with a proper privacy friendly system?

(and tbh, this is perfect advertising material for any competitor on the market to 'steal those hopeless little souls of those addicted players' )

Oh, no doubt we should definitely discuss the ISSUE. That's a healthy debate and one worth having. It's just that we need to keep it on a level of not singling out particular developers or games when talking about it, if we want to be able to keep talking about it on these boards.

My opinion? It's a horribly bad idea, for one major reason that was already mentioned - identity theft. Bearing in mind that with someone's name and a little work in checking things like Google, Facebook, Twitter - you can potentially find out someone's appearance, address, email address, phone number, and from there, commit fraud...

I applaud the decision to try and do something about the forum-trolling, but enforced use of real names is not the answer.

It's not an issue you can talk about without talking about Blizzard, since they're the only ones doing it. (AFAIK, Blizzard is applying it to all of their forums, not just WoW.)

Side note guys, there's a multi-page thread about this already in the Comic and Hero/Villain Culture you might want to check out.

I would be strongly against this change. We have not even considered it however.
