  1. IE9 was the version that got me to switch to a different browser.

Admittedly, it was 50% because I don't like the way Microsoft is changing the user interfaces for everything (I run absolutely everything that will give me the option in "classic" mode) and 50% because it was rendering webpages incorrectly on my second monitor while I played CoH on my primary screen--every time I switched back to the game, it would suddenly display what I was viewing 2-3 pages prior.

I'm now using Chrome. The user interface still bugs me, but at least it bugs me less than the IE9 interface AND it shows me what I want to be looking at on my second monitor.

Actually, I re-read that, and it was said the other way around--they may proliferate Empathy to Masterminds.

Masterminds getting Kinetics? Eventually. They still have Cold Domination, Kinetics, and Radiation and some other stuff. Maybe Empathy. Zwill thinks that would be pretty cool.

    Ohhh, also, INSPIRATIONS.

Inspirations are like potions from other RPGs... they can heal you, recover your "energy" (endurance, in City of Heroes), temporarily increase your damage, defense, resistance or accuracy stats, or give you temporary protection from enemies' mez (control) powers.

They drop from defeated enemies like crazy. Don't feel the need to hoard them.

This was my first real MMORPG--I've been playing for over seven years, and prior to that I only ever played console RPGs, where you often have limited availability to such items, and they tend to be expensive. I STILL have trouble with hoarding inspirations when I play CoH, even though you can buy them from readily-accessible vendors very cheaply.

Short version, a socket is how one computer connects to another to make the internet work. His problem seems to have something to do with a necessary connection not being made, hence the socket error.

After you said your mom-in-law's laptop did the same thing, I think that's a safe bet. You may also want to see if you can borrow her laptop and try it at a Starbucks or somewhere with free Wi-Fi. If it works there, you know it's something to do with your internet specifically. If it doesn't work there, then it's something to do with some other piece of software that's common to both your computers (probably antivirus, anti-malware or firewall software).

Remember that you need to reboot the modem completely in order to switch the device it's connected to... So power off both your computer and the modem, then plug the computer directly into the modem, then boot the modem back up, and once it's going turn the computer back on. (You'll need to power it down again to plug the router back in after testing.)

I do want to add that the trinity of other MMOs--healer, tank, and DPS--doesn't really exist here. I mean, you can play City of Heroes that way if you really want to, but it's not necessary by any means. In fact, if you want to play as a "healer," you'll find that your teammates would rather you use your buff and debuff powers than your heals.

So, if you're getting a team together and there's no tank or no healer, don't be worried... just get ready to start punching/blasting bad guys in the face.

Also: don't worry about dying. After level 10, you get "experience debt," which means you only earn half the XP until you've paid it all off... but you can pay back one death's worth of debt after just one or two groups of baddies. Even if you die a hundred times, debt is capped after like 8 deaths. It won't noticeably prohibit you from levelling up.
  7. Hrm, actually... now that I re-read it for the 5th time or so...

Are you asking to be automatically granted Flight with Hover/Air Superiority, Super Speed with Hasten/Flurry, Super Jump with Jump Kick/Combat Jumping and Teleport with Recall Friend/Teleport Foe? Are you basically just asking to save yourself a power pick?

It's an interesting idea at least, but I'm not sure it's necessary with the way the game is set up currently. It would also make it triflingly easy to have multiple travel powers on one build--take Air Superiority, Hasten, Combat Jumping and Recall Friend, and suddenly you've got 8 powers for the price of 4.

So, if that is what you're asking for, I'm going to have to say /unsigned.

The Vet period was identified by Positron as being three years in the first post on this very thread. I'm torn, because it seems more than fair to people who bought the game via download or jumped on with Good Vs Evil or the like... but not to people who actually paid $50-60 for one of the game boxes at their respective launches.

I'm not affected either way; I don't intend to cease my subscription, and even my secondary account now has 5 years of Vet status behind it. I do identify and commiserate with those have issue with this decision, but the developers' decision also seems pretty fair to probably 95% or more of those who will become Premium accounts under the launch of CoH Freedom. It's the edge cases like Bloodwynd--those who have put significant investment into the game in the past, but not quite enough to reach that three year mark--that make this somewhat confusing.
  11. This works for the Croatoa arcs and Katie Hannon as well.

In fact, since Ouroboros arcs are treated as TFs instead of just regular arcs, you can get a team together, do the missions for the contact who introduces you to Ernesto Hess or Katie Hannon, and everyone on the team will be able to speak with the corresponding TF contact afterwards. (If you do the arcs the normal way, only the mission holder will get that ability.)
  12. As TerraDraconis said for #2, you really DO want the people who actually are elitists out of the way when the free players show up. There are fewer than you think, and the community will be better as a whole once they've locked themselves away.

But as for #1 and #3, I and many others agree with you to some extent. I'm completely okay with locking out Controllers and MMs to brand new Free players, but I do feel that grandfathering in a way for pre-existing accounts who have purchased a box of either CoH or CoV to keep access to the corresponding AT(s) would be a good sign of faith on the developers part--these people were the early adopters, and they no doubt have characters using these ATs that they're attached to.

For #3, a group of players has proposed that they make a "free" subsection of the forums, to allow Free and Premium accounts access to communicate. The community rep it was pitched to said they had no plans to do so currently, but that they'd look into it. Of course, if this comes to pass, the free forums will have very limited moderation. You'll see a LOT of people trying to sell in-game items for real world money (the very same reason that in-game Free accounts have so few chat options), and there is a slim chance that there will be any sense of "community" to be gained from it.

Finally, I did want to touch on another point you made: I don't recall having seen anything that says Free/Premium accounts are limited in their ability to PVP. Obviously, they won't have access to the Incarnate abilities at all, and will have limited access to IO sets, but I haven't seen anything that says they won't be able to compete should they choose.
  13. The NCSoft store is down. Paragon Studios can't do anything about that except say "Hey, guys, turn it back on!" Especially on a Sunday.

If I understand what they've been saying about CoH Freedom, though, I think Paragon Studios will be taking full control of all in-game store functionality, meaning that we should never see this problem again after the launch later this year.

    A desperate plea

What does it say when you click "View Log?"
  15. Ah, indeed, I hadn't thought to check that. I was sitting here trying to puzzle out why my Certificates were gone but my regular Global Emails weren't.

    Thanks TJ!!!
  16. http://wiki.cohtitan.com/wiki/Rule_o...e_Law_of_Fives

Any IO bonuses beyond 5 of the same (in this case, +1.5% Max HP) do not count. This is only true of bonuses that have the same name, which Mako and Titanium Coating unfortunately do.

If you're going specifically for Max HP bonuses, you could drop 3 sets of Mako for Crushing Impact... but since I'm guessing you chose Mako primarily for its defense bonuses, I doubt you'd want to do that.
  17. Well, if I try to buy anything new, it comes up with an error message that says "Your account inventory is currently being loaded. Try again in a few moments."

I knew I hadn't bought all the auras, for example, and I'd been working from the top down on the list... so I tried to buy the bottom-most thing (Slime) and see if that worked, and got the above message.

  18. As you can see, the character standing next to Mikey there is wearing the Ascension Emblem, Gloves and Boots (as well as the cape, which you may not be able to see)--yet all those items are showing up again in the store, despite my having purchased them all last week.

Other characters are having their Certifications box under email show up as empty, even though I haven't logged them in in months!

Is anybody else seeing this same behavior, or did I stumble across a bug limited to me?

(EDIT: I've also verified that the costume parts are still available in the tailor on the characters who had cashed in their certificates.)

There are a few problems with this:

    1) CoH doesn't have a development staff large enough to do one paid expansion every year on top of the free issues. And if they quit doing the free content updates altogether in favor of large yearly paid expansions, they'd lose current subscribers--I know they'd lose mine. They also get boosts of traffic when new issues are released, which means income in spurts throughout the year instead of one big pay day at the end of an expansion followed by 11 months of a minimal level of subscribers.

Paragon Studios about 50 people in their development team, and are generally divided working on content for about 2-3 issues at a time. How many people do you suppose Blizzard, who does put out a yearly expansion along with their regular small updates, has at the yoke?

    2) The game was designed for a player level cap of 50. It's not going to change, because that would invalidate all the existing IOs and would require additional powers added to existing sets (which would in turn slow production of new powersets)... otherwise builds would become slot-heavy and there would be no strategy behind building a character, as you'd be able to just dump slots in every power. It might sound like a good idea on paper--even the reasons I gave as detractions might sound good--but there are already plenty of people complaining that the game is too easy... give them an extra couple super-level powers and enough slots to 6-slot everything, and see how long they stick around with the complete lack of a challenge we'd be left with.

Instead, the post-50 progression is the Incarnate system, which will eventually have more options than what are offered now (see the large group of extra Lore pets added in i20.5) and will bring us to a "hypothetical level 60." They've even said that they're keeping their options open in case they want to go beyond 10 Incarnate slots in the future.

    -----
Now, again, I don't mean to insult you, but you are holding steadfast to what is proving to be an archaic design process. Times are changing. "Bigger is better" doesn't work in this economy. Developers are finding that it's easier to sell 1000 things for a dime than it is to sell 100 for a dollar, enabling them to make more money on smaller productions.

Which does lead to one of the other points you made: they need to step up their game and put out more content. I agree that they're just digging themselves a shallow grave with the switchover to CoH Freedom if they don't. But you're wrong in thinking that everything they do needs to be large scale--it's exactly the opposite. Along with the big stuff they do now in 2-3 issues a year, they need to put out a ton of new content that is small, eye-catching and cheap. THAT is how Freedom will thrive. They've already announced a start to this: Signature Story Arcs, missions that have your characters working directly alongside the game's signature characters, will be released every month. That means that subscribers get guaranteed new content in the form of two new story arcs every month (one Hero and one Villain arc), and Free/Premium players can get access to it via the Paragon Points Store.

CoH Freedom is not just an excuse to trick people into doing "7 year old content" as you put it, either. Have you not noticed that they're completely revamping the starting zones for CoH (the new tutorial will be Galaxy City's destruction, and you will either leave to Atlas Park as a Hero or Mercy Isle as a Villain) and adding a ton more content to the level 1 through 20 game?
