Int32 error

Posted

So i'm still unable to get the new launcher to work. When i click play, I get the following.

So I looked up INT32, and aparently it has something to do with windows. As many of you know, Me trying to do anything with the computer is like a monkey making nasty with a football, so I've come to you all once again. What can I do to resolve this issue?

Int32 is a datatype in programming, specifically a 32-bit integer. Depending on whether it is signed or unsigned (i.e. positive and negative or only positive) then it has minimum/maximum values of -2,147,483,647->2,147,483,647 or 0->4,294,967,295 respectively.

The error you're getting implies that something that the launcher is recieving as part of the patching or checking process is outside of that bound, as to what, probably only the developers can tell you unless the "View Log" button provides any more detail as to the cause.

Any chance you can post the relevant chunk of the logs here? Or upload them somewhere we can get to if they're too big to post.

Also, what OS are you running? What Service Pack level and is it 32 or 64-bit?

What version(s) of the .Net Framework do you have installed?

According to this support page, you need .Net Framework 3.0 and MSXML 6.0 installed for Windows XP.

If the game spit out 20 dollar bills people would complain that they weren't sequentially numbered. If they were sequentially numbered people would complain that they weren't random enough.

I've been trying to help Jawbreaker with this, and I can consolidate some of the information here.

Jawbreaker is/has:

Using Windows XP (I have no idea of Service Pack)
Updated the .xml file as in this post.
Uninstalled and updated to .net 3 and msmxl 6 according to this post.

Personally, I was hoping for Win 7 and a UAC related error that could be worked around... But it does seem Jawbreaker is the "worst case scenario" for the NCSoft Launcher.

@Jawbreaker: Do you defrag your hard drive? Do you run any computer cleaners/registry cleaners? And most importantly, do you have your XP install disks?

I see data errors like this and my initial reaction is to think you have a bad stick of RAM. I would try memtest. Memtest is a small downloadable CD that runs automatically and can test your RAM for you.

Here is a link to another post with the logfile http://boards.cityofheroes.com/showthread.php?t=265997

I have service pack 3 installed

i Defrag regularly with Defraggler

the uninstaller I use is Revo uninstaller

Will try the memtest thing next

also, I just attempted an install on my mother-in-law's laptop, which runs Vista. I get the same Int32 error message.

I wonder if I should plug my computer directly into the modem, maybe it's a router issue?

After you said your mom-in-law's laptop did the same thing, I think that's a safe bet. You may also want to see if you can borrow her laptop and try it at a Starbucks or somewhere with free Wi-Fi. If it works there, you know it's something to do with your internet specifically. If it doesn't work there, then it's something to do with some other piece of software that's common to both your computers (probably antivirus, anti-malware or firewall software).

Remember that you need to reboot the modem completely in order to switch the device it's connected to... So power off both your computer and the modem, then plug the computer directly into the modem, then boot the modem back up, and once it's going turn the computer back on. (You'll need to power it down again to plug the router back in after testing.)

Short version, a socket is how one computer connects to another to make the internet work. His problem seems to have something to do with a necessary connection not being made, hence the socket error.

Who is your ISP? Is it a cable connection? DSL? Something else?

Maybe post a HiJackThis log. It's possible someone will spot something dealing with the other software on the computer that might be causing this.

EDIT: One thing I'd recommend before that. With the computer connected directly to the modem, open a command prompt and type "ipconfig /flushdns" without the quotes and then click OK. Then try again to connect.

Jawbreaker's ISP is CoX cable, in Phoenix Arizona.

Jawbreaker, you never did answer if you have your OS install disks (XP). I don't mean "restore disks" that most places give people when they buy a computer with Windows preinstalled. But an actual XP install disk.

Well, reconnected directly to the modem, ran the ipconfig/flushdns command. Still getting the int32 error.

Here's the hijackthis log. I ran it while still connected directly to the modem, if that matters.

Stupid question, but have you tried doing without SuperAntiSpyware and/or AVG to see if it helps? It's possible that one or both of them have poorly written IDS components that are causing the Launcher connection issues (Almost all IDS' are poorly written, consumer-grade doubly so).

Jawbreaker, the problem you need to focus on is not the Int32 error. That is happening because you are trying to run an old game client and the server is sending data which is not compatible with the old game client.

The problem you need to focus on is that the Launcher is not updating the game. The red icon next to your game in the Launcher means that either the game is not up-to-date, or the Launcher can't figure out what the current version of the game should be. You need to resolve the Launcher issues so that you see a green icon next to your game in the Launcher.

Ahh. Well, um. Dunno what to do. This install is from the Architect edition box, should I uninstal and try a fresh install from..somewhere? Does CoH have an install page?

You can get it by logging into your NCSoft account and specifically selecting your City of Heroes account.

Or, someone else (like me) could do that and paste the link here for you.

http://download.cityofheroes.com/cli..._Installer.exe

I HIGHLY recommend installing the game somewhere other than the default location (C:\Program Files\City of Heroes). Personally, I installed to a different physical hard drive, but you could just as easily reinstall to "C:\Games\City of Heroes" or wherever else you'd prefer.

I do not have access to the launcher code, so I have to ask:

Could these two problems be interrelated? Could the launcher be having trouble identifying the version of the game because of the Int32 error?

I mean, based on Jawbreaker's posts, he/she:

  • Opened port 80
  • Gave NCLauncher.exe and NCAccess.exe firewall permissions
  • Uninstalled and installed the .NET 3 framework and MSXML 6 libraries
  • Various other tweaks and checks

In short, everything on this page, and still can't get the launcher to work properly.

Well booger.

I've done some research, and the following might work with a recovery disk (although very unlikely). There are ways of making it work, but they usually involve registry editing - and I'm not even going to start you down that potentially dangerous and painful path.

  1. Insert your recovery disk into your drive.
  2. If any windows pop up (autoplay, recovery, etc.) just close, or cancel out. You do not want the computer keeping the drive active.
  3. Open a command prompt, and type (without quotes) "sfc /scannow" (notice the space between "sfc" and "/scannow") and press Enter.
  4. At this point, you will likely be asked to insert the correct disk, or just to insert your install disk.
    1. If you have multiple optical drives, you can try using a different drive.
    2. If sfc will simply not accept your recovery disk as correct, and won't quit for any other reason, you can hold down the "Ctrl" key and press "c" to quit the program
  5. If it works, proceed immediately to Windows Update and search for new updates to CYA.

I should warn you, if it works this could take a very long time (hours).

What sfc (System File Checker) does is compare your current protected files (almost 4000 files as of XP SP3) against what they should be to make sure they aren't compromised at all. And if they aren't as they should be, it replaces them.

I hope the new install will work for you, and you won't need to work with sfc.
