Or something is up with your network provider. Or, even more likely, you've got the same antivirus/firewall software on both machines and you've configured them to work properly with the live servers but not the test server.
  2. Another tidbit that might help performance on your machine is to edit your CoH desktop shortcut and add the following bit to the end of the target:

    -maxinactivefps 1

    It will then look like:
    "C:\Program Files\City of Heroes\CohUpdater.exe" -maxinactivefps 1
if you installed to the default location. The 1 is interchangable with any number except for zero (which removes the cap), and simply tells the game that, if it's not the primary window, it should limit the amount of graphics processing to that many frames per second maximum.

It's great for AFK farming and dual boxing or if you just want to run other stuff without CoH eating all of your system resources.
  3. I'll be rolling two: a Demon/Thermal MM that will remain a Villain, and when GR releases I'll start a Demon/Dark MM in Praetoria with the goal of making him a Hero.

I'm pretty sure the nerf to Blessing of the Zephyr was in preparation for City of Sidekicks. The only thing they'll be able slot their many dodge powers with is Universal Travel sets.

Wouldn't it have been crueler (maybe not to you personally, but to players in general) to continue keeping us in the dark about a feature we already know is coming and haven't seen more than preliminary artwork for in the past?

Oh look, you answered your own question...
    Quote:
Also note that I understand that Ultra-Mode is a significant addition and may cause this CB to take longer than most; however, looking over the additions in I17, it appears (to me at least) that Ultra-mode is the vast majority of new content for this Issue other than DS (for prepurchasers).
I may not be a coder anymore, but I can assure you that testing graphics updates is a lot more intensive than database stuff... and the last real 3D graphics application I wrote was a crappy modular minigolf program back in '03.

I can't even imagine how much guess-and-check the Paragon Studios programming crew are having to do to add new functionality to the graphics engine. (They've already stated--and it should be obvious even if they hadn't--that they don't have a box with every type of graphics card available to test settings on... it took what, 3 months after Posi created his GR Graphics Card thread before he had any real data on ATI cards?) For that matter, who knows what the new adjustments are going to do to compatibility on older machines? There's a pretty sizeable and vocal minority of players on minimum or barely higher specs that would be beyoned P.O.ed if the game was broken for them.

And there ARE a significant amount of other features being added in Issue 17 on top of Ultra Mode and the Demon Summoning powerset (which is still part of Going Rogue, just released early for the pre-purchasers), including:
    • new missions and updates to the Posi TF (which almost always have issues when they're first integrated into the game, or did you not beta test the 5th Column TF/SF in the beta last year?),
    • new exploration badges for every zone,
    • the ability to email inf/items to yourself and others (which has been highly requested since... the launch of the game),
    • new Mission Architect features,
    • a new freaking Defender inherent,
    • plenty of other user interface and quality-of-life upgrades
Just based on that last list alone, there's more going into Issue 17 than there was in Issue 15, which required 33 days of what they were technically calling a closed beta (even though it was available to all subscribers).

And has been pointed out in other threads, they're either concurrently running the start of the Going Rogue closed beta or just about to begin it (this past weekend at PAX East, they announced it would start this week), which is probably eating up a lot of their support time as well.

Like Je_saist said, I wouldn't expect open beta for Issue 17 to start until at least next week, if not the week thereafter...

Though it needs to freakin' get here so I can get mah whip on!!!
  7. Yes, you can simply burn your entire CoH directory to a DVD and have him copy the files directly into his CoH directory. (I generally do this with every issue release to minimize the time required to reinstall if I suffer a hard drive failure.) A USB jump drive or hard drive would work just as well.

Going Rogue WILL have a box version for sale in stores in the United States. If you live outside of the US, then you'll have to order a box from an online retailer (like Amazon.com) and have it shipped to you.

But they won't be in Atlas Park until after Going Rogue. Mercy Island, Sharkshead, Nerva, Grandville, etc sure, but they'll only be able to access Atlas via a mayhem mission.

It all depends on what sort of comics you read, really. I haven't read the series myself, but I've got a good friend who loves the series Fables, which as I understand it is about fairy tale creatures living in a modern day big city. And even in mainstream comics, there are plenty of infamous witches and wizards, like Marvel's Doctor Strange or DC's Doctor Fate. Wonder Woman is what, the daughter of a greek god and bestowed with magic armor?

And not that there's a lot in the CoH universe with references to manga, but the whole magic powers thing is pretty big in eastern comics. Many of those comics are set in either modern, near future or recent history settings.

Edit: I forgot to say I'm totally stoked and ready to have a demon summoning Belmont descendant whipping the crap out of stuff in Praetoria.
  10. As you progress through the game, you can earn up to 5 total costume slots (counting the one you start with)--1 at level 20, 1 at level 30, 1 at level 40, and one for turning in Halloween salvage to a special contact in either Croatoa or Nerva Archipelago.

If you haven't been there yet, check out the Icon costume tailor in the northwest corner of Steel Canyon to earn your level 20 costume slot. You can also completely redesign your first costume slot there at any time you choose, but as a new player, it will cost you a fairly significant amount of influence.
  11. I'm a little confused as to how your account lapsed on the 15th while you were earning rewards on the 26th, unless you simply meant that you shut off payment on that date.

It seems like you should have been at 34 months on Oct 26th, then 35 months not on Nov 26th but on Feb 10th. 36 months should then have hit around March 10th.

But Vet Rewards have been bugged for nearly a year now. It's not a Paragon Studios issue, either (it's an NCSoft customer service issue). I've had to petition the last three Vet badges to get them to award, and I've only ever gone without subscribing for a single day when a credit card expired.

Submit a petition in game with the info you posted here and ask them to check your Vet Reward status, and if you are correct with the information you've given, you should have the badge by the end of the week.

It wasn't announced for i19, but they did say it was definitely in the works for an upcoming issue.

Personally, I'm hoping the Mission Computer might actually get some love in Going Rogue, with new SG content!
  13. I started using the OpenGL 4.0 preview drivers this weekend. They fixed all my alt-tabbing issues.

(I also have Aero turned off on my Win 7 system, because I think it's a stupid waste of resources. Furthermore, I've configured my theme to look like Windows 98... because I could.)

I think you should wait a bit before trying to build a solo AV-killer. You're just coming back to the game for the first time in a long while. I'd advise you to ease your way back in and play the field with some of the newer features the game has to offer before you dedicate yourself to min-maxing a single character.

But if you really want to jump in and start smashing AVs, a Bots/Dark or Thugs/Dark Mastermind is probably going to be the best bang for your buck.
  17. A personal favorite of mine:
    http://www.tigerdirect.com/applicati...620&CatId=1859

It doesn't scream "gamer case," but it's roomy, it's easy to work around in (the motherboard attaches to a tray that slides out the back for easy access!), and it keeps things extremely cool with 4 case fans, one of which is specifically designed to increase air flow around your hard drive(s).

So where is this info coming from, PAX East?

Edit: Nevermind, I just used Search-Fu and found that yes, the info IS from PAX East.

Are you on Vista/Win 7 with the game installed in the default directory and not allowing the game to run with administrative privelages?

If that's the case, you won't be able to write out new files, as Vista/Win 7 block non-administrative access to the My Programs directory.

Your best bet to work around this problem would be to run the game from a different directory (like C:\Games\City of Heroes instead of C:\Program Files\City of Heroes). If this is indeed the case, let me know and I'll see if I can't write you a quick guide for changing your install location.
  21. 1) Yes.
    2) Yes.
    3) Huh? You can't "gift" your month of time to another player with an expired account, if that's what you're asking.

My question is, did they actually have a box for the Mac version? I was under the impression that it was online only? The Architect Edition has a box that includes a code to get you a free Cyborg or Magic Super Booster, but it doesn't include the Mac Pack with the Valkyrie costume items or Mission Teleport power.

    PC Advice Needed

So, I'm wondering whether or not this is true. I trust their experience with building computers, but I'm not quite sure that they're right in thinking that problems 1&2 mentioned above are so bad nowadays.
They're full of it. I'm not saying that you won't possibly run into issues with compatibility or parts going defective, but a little time spent on Google can limit the risk of compatibility issues, and individual parts generally have warranties at least as long (if not longer) than the standard warranty that a PC manufacturer would offer you.

The real question is, are you willing to get your hands dirty and follow instructions? It's not hard to put together your own PC these days, but you really need to follow a good guide the first time you do so. A lot of first-time builders do things like forget to put risers in the case (they raise the motherboard from against the back of the case, so it doesn't short out), or forget to put thermal paste between the processor and the heatsink (which causes your processor to overheat and possibly break).

For the most part though, building a modern computer is just plugging things into a slot. The slot will either be obvious, or there will be multiple of the same slot type, so you don't have to worry much about stuffing something in the wrong spot.

And of course, if you ever have any questions about building your own, you've already found a good place to ask for help.
  23. I would really love to see this. My Kheld is supposed to be a 6-7 year old boy, and he sounds exactly the same as my adult Scrapper when he jumps. It's a little ridiculous.
  24. You don't have to physically sign anything, but there is a non-disclosure agreement in the welcome email they send you that you "agree" to simply by logging in to the test server. If you talk about anything going on in the closed beta, you a) have that post erased by a moderator, b) get kicked out of the closed beta and are blacklisted so you can never join a closed beta again. (Technically, this can happen just for telling people you're in the closed beta.)

Depending on the seriousness of your infraction, they could go so far as to ban you from using the forums and I think they can even ban your game account.

There's a 32 bit and 64 bit version, but it's more likely that you've got the 32 bit version. (64 bit had a pretty limited release and was followed by Vista within a matter of months.)

If you don't know which version you have, right click on your "My Computer" icon and select properties. It should show that it's the 64 bit version if that's the case; if it doesn't say 64 bit, then you have the 32 bit version.
