  1. Malice Johansson

    Street Justice/Willpower

I loved the way she played. I felt unbelievably capable. Anyway, here's her bio, cribbed from a story I'd been working on before I put her into CoX:

Malice's career fighting crime began as a drunken bet. She played soccer for the university in Paragon City and was part of an athletically-themed sorority that had crashed a nearby frat party. They determined to out-do the boys, and in the process, the smack-talk started. It escalated and threatened to turn dangerous when Maylis stepped in and beat down the fraternity's loudmouth, a loudmouth that also happened to be super-powered.

She and her sisters gloated, but were told that there was no way Maylis - then known by her alias Malice for her playstyle on the soccer field - could have beaten him when he was sober. She took the bet.

The next day, she realized what she'd done and nearly panicked. Sadly, the bruiser and his friends didn't. They trashed the dormitories in the confrontation, but Maylis beat him. Again. And suddenly she got an incredibly stupid idea: if she could beat a sober super while hung over, maybe she could make a real go of it and put her ethics major to use.

I know there's some vitriol around here about the game, but Guild Wars 2 does that. People are generally responsible for their own healing. Support characters, while often featuring healing above and beyond that, are there more for control, buffing and debuffing. Just thought I'd mention it.

Though playing support there is in no wise as satisfying as it has been here.
  3. While the timing looks bad, I'm not convinced that there is any nefarious intent in it. A lot of management teams have ongoing analysis of the operations they run, and some of those operations are battlegrounds. Sometimes unrelated decisions collide. Maybe there are NCSoft factions that love CoX and others that hate it. This game may have been on its death-bed a lot longer than we know, living on borrowed time. Freedom could have been an experiment that just didn't impress the execs enough to keep around and maybe they had a year or 9 months or whatever to make a case for it - and couldn't. Maybe subs and other purchases have just finally dropped too low and are trending lower.

I won't say they didn't do what you're suggesting, but I will say that I doubt it. So far as I know we just don't have enough detail, and are likely to never have it. All we'll ever know is what we're told and what we suppose. But those things don't always intersect at the truth.

I will miss this game a LOT. I loved it. I still do. I still can't believe how sad I am. To paraphrase Louis L'Amour (I think): "There'll never be its like again. Not in our time or any other."

Sith Rose makes a great point, too.

Well, we don't yet have one made from an axe-blade do we? So I'm gonna have to say we haven't fully explored the permutations of the 'hawk.

    Don't judge me.
  11. Y'know, I don't have numbers, all I have is observation. Yes, I know how flawed that is, but no matter who or what I'm attacking, I seem to be hitting dead things a lot more often than with any other set. I thought a little self-deprecating humor might be in order since others among you are far better at articulating the issues than I am but I still wanted to weigh in.

I'm new to EM. I have an SS brute and an StJ brute and I love love love both of them (StJ more than SS right now). I want to love my EM too. I'll see about paying extra attention to when I use my slower attacks. That's probably the best I can do for now.

BTW, you guys are all too excited about picking paper bond and notebook color for this meeting about a discussion over a conversation regarding idle speculation around potential ideas for...well...stuff. Possibly concerning EM. But equally possible is that it may be about the design of the doilies for committee members' cakes.

Anyway, if you see poor little Shockpoint running around on Protector, try to save her something to punch, will you? Try not to roll your eyes when I start screaming with joy at landing a solid hit.

Toreador are no slouches in a fight. Celerity was one of their three main Disciplines. I'd make a Toreador into a DB/SR Scrapper. That's a valid combintation, right?

    And I'd make main-line Brujah WP over SR...but that's just me. =P

I have nothing else to contribute.
  13. There is actually far more Redside content than Blueside. It's a little-known secret. Unfortunately, all the villain players keep stealing it and hoarding it for themselves. You'd think they'd at least try to ransom it.

I must be doing something wrong then, because my controls seem largely superfluous with as much as I have to stack them in there on anything but the ninjas and monkeys.
    • Confusion? Can remove ninjas and monkeys from the badge kill-pool. Can adversely affect herding them. Also they come in small enough clusters that the use of Confuse effects is dubious to begin with (it works much better during the Heist ambushes).
    • Holds? Worthless on the minions, must be stacked so heavily on other targets I can only get to one of them effectively, and I have a LOT of holds with my particular powersets. Granted, sometimes I can lock down a really hard target with some concentrated effort so there is that.
    • Immobilize? Minions only, and not always helpful.
    • Slows? Hmmm...I can't quite tell if they're doing much or not.
    • Debuffs? Again, can't quite tell.
    • GFT? Well, I can't complain about him. He swallows monkeys whole.
    • Buffs? These are good. No complaints.
    • Healing? Mostly good but also tad anemic at times. I even use the crap outta my Spirit Tree.

I really *wish* I felt more worthwhile in there. Don't get me wrong: I know I'm not worthless to the team, but the difficulty of applying controls and the dearth of damage I contribute sometimes makes it seem like I'm more a promotional standee than an asset. I don't feel that way during the Heist ambushes (where I think I make a HUGE difference), only the Arena. Usually I end up just vomiting control effects until my Endurance bar is screaming for mercy, only to look up and see my target still running amok. I feel like I contribute a lot more doing it on my L40 Brute (the only other character I do the event on regularly).

Anyway, I do like smaller team content, but one of this game's signature and best features is the way it scales content to team size. I'd hate for them to just ignore that.

I suppose my opening comments are part of my concern with smaller-scope content: I need to feel useful, but I can't be allowed to neuter the opposition so badly there is no challenge. Then again, that's kinda the Controller's life, that balancing act.

edit: I think I should add: the smaller team content DOES make each character feel more important to the team and I do like that...I just don't want to ever lose the innate scaling CoX does for team size as a core feature. Outside the Arena, I do feel my contributions are more important than they are in most other team situations.

And while I was Preemie, it really was appreciated. I came back in as a T6 Preemie. I'm not sure I would have re-subbed if I hadn't been treated so well by the people responsible for the system. The game recognized that I've been loyal in the past and rewarded me for it. I was encouraged and rewarded the game right back.

I spend less now that I'm re-subbed than I did as a Preemie, ironically. It wasn't a LOT more, I don't think, but it was definitely more. But I got things I wanted and I was happy. And yes, if the game had been significantly hobbled, I probably wouldn't have done so. Though I'm still trying to figure out if I would have spent as much if I'd started from a fresh account, or if I'd have subbed or remained F2P.

Extra character slots, free xfers, the stipend, free-to-VIP and Incarnate content all combined to convince me to re-subscribe. I have to admit that the Incarnate content is likely the best carrot to offer, though for me the other stuff outweighed it. I think if I'm completely honest it was also that the majority of those I play with regularly are VIP and I was tired of not being able to do VIP content with them (they're so wonderful they'd drop whatever VIP stuff they were doing to invite me along - they'd been making sacrifices for me and I wanted to let them know I appreciated it).

I've just started down the Incarnate rabbit-hole and maybe I'll be more addicted to it than I suspect.
  18. I started on Justice when the game launched, and I still have a lot of fun with the characters I have there. The community has usually been good there. But after some time away, I tried Virtue since I'd heard it was the unofficial RP server and in my mind that meant better names, not...the other stuff. And it did generally have heroes with better names. It's busy and easy to PUG which is what I tend to do.

But to spend some time with friends, I made characters on Protector, too. Now, those friends are rarely around, but I've made a bunch of new friends in-game there, friends that I just love hanging out with no matter what we're doing.

So while I'd love for more of my Virtue characters to get more play time (that's where my absolute favorite character lives), I am only there when my friends aren't around or if they're in the middle of a TF when I log in. Most other times, it's Protector: not because it's easy to find a team (it's really easy or really hard with very little rhyme or reason I can see), but because that's where my real supergroup of friends are.

We function like an SG, even though there are at least 4 or 5 SGs between us.

Once you've got stone fists, both hammers, and seismic smash, there is nothing more satisfying than walking up to a boss and unloading a giant can of BOOM WHAM SLAM BAM WHRAKOOM whoopass on him, complete with screen shake, knockdown, knockup, massive damage, and a boss-grade hold. And fault and tremor (even if tremor is only an average AoE, mechanically) both have the same satisfying smashiness paired with gobs of AoE knockdown (IMO an extremely powerful-feeling effect). It's not as strong overall as titan weapons, but it's no slouch either, and it's personally my favorite melee set.
You are a player after my own heart.
  20. If you make a character you can check out the animations and any alternate animations during creation. What one person thinks is really cool may not be the case for someone else. For instance, I like the animations for Street Justice the best. Coupled with the snapping, crunching sounds it's extremely visceral and - I think - relatively showy. I'm a huge fan of Spinning Strike for showiness. There's even some footwork animated into the set. But I've heard other people comment that they find it pedestrian. *shrug*

I'd look at Earth Melee myself, given how much I love Earth Assault...but it doesn't have Stone Spears. Boo.

So I'd check out the power customization screen during creation and maybe just watch people on your teams with the sets you're considering to see what looks fun.
  21. I would like a pool with a rain in it for my Defender (Rain Dancer who focuses on...you guessed it). Ice Blast gives me two, Storm gives me one...I want an EPP that gives me another. Though I imagine I can't since the EPPs with rains just duplicate existing rain powers that are already available to a Defender.

    I can dream, though.

I know I'm late to the party but...

...as a player who was Premium and used both temporary IO licenses and the Tier 7 unlock (permanent) later, I used any and all IOs at will, set or non-set, and got the bonuses. I only lost them (and all IO benefits) during the occasional pre-Tier 7 window when the monthly license would expire before I renewed it.

Just thought some firsthand experience might help cement the responses.

Really, though, you're right. You play in melee but you don't have the same sort of durability as a true melee AT so you have to be quick on the controls. All the knocking people around sure helps though.
  24. I'm a little embarrassed to post this but I want to try to make the best use of my Alpha slot I can. I'm including my live build (the reason for my embarrassment, as you'll soon see) on the chance that it will help. I must admit to sometimes being a little overwhelmed by Mid's, but I do try to use it.

I suppose what I'm curious about is what Alpha ability would help me the most as a Plant/Time Controller, though that may be a consideration independent of my horribad build.

Anyway, here goes, and thanks ahead of time!
