Grind: An MMO without grinding would be a dead MMO. Think about this for a second if you are getting all huffy. An MMO is designed to sustain subscribers for the longest period of time, the way you do that is by artificially padding out content to make it last longer. In my opinion CoX is one of the most grindy MMOs on the market. It is litteraly 50 levels of doing the same thing over and over again until you reach 50 in which case you either continue doing the same things or reroll and do the same thing with a new character. Task Force are the divergence from this in that sometimes you get a mission in the TF that gives you something to do other than one of the three mission arc types in this game (Kill, Glowy, Escot.) People love to grind, it just has to be more involving than hitting the same button over and over again, hence why a LOT of people hate the low levels in this game.
End Game Content: I am surprised it took them this long to release it honestly. From what I have seen of i20, even though it is a little sparse, it is enough to keep me entertained for a couple of weeks at least. Apex and Tin Mage are STILL fun to me because there is a CHANCE of failure unlike any other task in the game thus far.
PvP: Yeah good luck with this, the majority of people in this game would rather see all the PvPers chased out than see it ever get attention again. If the devs DO work on it it will be to a bunch of whines that their time could be spent better elsewhere, for example look at the new end game content and all the detractors whinning about it.
Mid Game: Ehh this one I just say needs more TFs which we have coming down the line in i20 so...maybe eliminate TOs and DOs at this point just so it isnt like pulling teeth playing a low level character? As for rewards...well what do you want? All recipe drops to be 50? I just save merits on my characters until they reach 50 then buy what I need for their build.
Age: I have played a LOT of MMOs in my time and you are right, most games do start to fade away a little before 10 years but this game has the special rights to being the king of a very small genre so it will probably last longer. But you are right that more and more people will leave every month and it will get smaller and smaller but it will be years before it has to worry....Unless the devs pull another i13 or ED and drive away a chunk of their player base, cause that may do the game in at this point.
As far as everyone laughing at Champions, why do you have to mock another game to make you feel better about the one you play? Are you so worried about CoX that you have to constantly pat it on the back and tell it how great it is so it can keep on trucking? I just don't get it but I see it all the time in this game. -
Quote:This, again.Like OZ said, it mostly worked the same as pve and made sense. Most all types of toons were viable and they each had a role in the team dynamics. Now? Not so much....
When support actually supported, when debuffs debuffed, when buffs buffed, when there was more to do than trow sharks or roll a blaster. I miss playing my support /therm and actually being useful to my group. -
Quote:Have you not been around here for awhile? It is EXACTLY like the Devs to send someone to placate us then do absolutely nothing for a couple of years. This is not the first time this has happened so I really don't expect anything to be different.Wow PC Guy, how'd you get to be such an optimist? Your half-capacity glass must be OVERFLOWING! =D
I mean look, the Devs/management didn't HAVE to tell Z to open up to us. They wouldn't do that just to get people talking and then NOT take some action. Granted, the changes people are asking for might be out of the Devs scope to give us immediately. Maybe they were looking for ideas for a quick-fix or whatnot. But it's not like Z said "well I'm bored, i'm gonna go ask the PvPers some mindless questions and stir up the hornet's nest!"
Now, I realize you'd rather expect NOTHING and then get a little something, than expect a lot and get nothing or next to it. But really, dial it back a bit, you sound nutty!
Z if you really do care, and I hope you do, most of us really don't care if you do or you don't because in the end we know that nothing is going to change. Hope is gone at this point...
I personally feel that if you guys do revamp PvP it would actually help, I know for a fact that a few of the guys I used to run with would come back if i13 was reverted. If the Devs actually do take another pass at PvP please don't just drop the changes on us, ask for feedback, then ignore it. Or you know...tell us that, "lol these changes aren't for you, so suck it up!" -
You know ever since i13 I have had a hard time even finding a place to fit in in this game and have been SGless since I gave up on PvP and Renegades. I even quit recently with the intention of never coming back until my family in their infinite wisdom bought me a time card for a game I stopped playing...
But it is nice to see that even avid anti-PvPers have been coming out and speaking on behalf of the PvP community.
On topic my favorite PvP moments are from early in this game pre-i13 running around doing kick ball on Freedom/Liberty/Test and just messing around in zones. Just every match and every night was just awesome playing PvP in this game with the speed and precision it required. But even then the game still had its problems and as a lot of other people have said it was goals. Planetside was a completely generic FPS but it was so awesome because of the fact that there were hundreds of players fighting over control of something as simple as a tower in the middle of nowhere, it was awesome!
The reason that it is so frustrating in this game, aside from being ignored constantly, is that there is so much potential! Look at the Terra Volta respec and tell me that something like that is not the PERFECT example of how PvP could be done better. One group trying to defend the core while the others try and destroy it? Simple and fun. But that goes for a LOT in this game, look at Mayhem/Safeguard missions. How is that not the perfect setting for heroes and villains to square off against one another? -
Quote:No where do I make the case that the devs or this game are "ebil" in that post. I have grown to hate this game, that does NOT mean it is a bad game. I spent five years playing this game and I SHOULD have left a year ago but I kept playing because my wife played. After a year of focring myself to do something I don't enjoy I have come to loath it. You can not argue with me about my opinion and frankly that is what you seem to be doing.ORLY?
I mean, you might be able to sneak that nonsense past someone who hasn't read your posts in this thread, but unfortunately for you I have.
well except that it's your stated reason for quitting.
You're doing worse than making no sense here, you're flatly contradicting your own posts in the thread.
Enjoy your (short?) stay on my ignore list, and good luck finding the magic game that gives you unlimited content (as defined by you) for free!
I stand by the statement that anyone who would play this game without recieving ANY new content and continue paying for the service would be a fanboy. Unlike most people though I don't see fanboys as sub-human so take that for whatever it matters. I will freely admit that I am a fan of the Alien and Predator series and payed to see Alien vs Predator three times in theaters even though I didn't think it was that great of a movie. There, perfect example.
The ONE thing I will grant you that might be confrontational in my post was my saying that the community has become insular. So if you take offense to that I apologize. That is, like everything else I have posted, my opinion.
I do not need to quantify the drop in content as my reason for leaving because it is personal to ME. To ME it seems like there has been a drop in content and so I am taking MY business elsewhere. If you disagree with me that is your right but it is overstepping things to say I am wrong to unsubsribe when I feel I am not getting my monies worth out of a game. Unless you feel like paying for my account then by all means you can tell me what is a valid reason to stop playing or not.
Nethergoat I have seen your post across the forums and frankly you are just in it for the flames, you rarely post anything relevant to the topic at hand and attack anyone for what ever reason feels valid to you that day. I will take your ignore as a badge of honor because I don't feel I have been offensive in anyway and have tried to talk with civility. -
Quote:I'll assume you are responding to GG for this which I can't see....for pvp, agreed(which, if you follow arbie's posts, is generally his complaint, the costumes thing..i smell concern trolling), but for costumes, it was pretty good, and people who play a significant number of alts really have to appreciate patrol exp. rotate my roster every night i play, and run it at full speed for a level...then go craft/market. the badges were pretty too.
Anyhow, yes PvP is a big deal breaker for me but I enjoyed this game enough to stick around after it was....I'll be nice and say changed.
Alright, I want to make my position on costume bits clear as clear can be. I don't care. Really I don't care at all boust costume pieces. I bought all of the boosters except the Wedding and Party Pack. I am just trying to show how many pieces have been released for free as opposed to in boosters. I am not pushing an agenda of doom or gloom or saying that this game is going to die. It will be around a good long time longer, of this I have no doubt....Well a little because NCSoft did kill Tabula Rasa but this game isn't in that kind of danger zone. If you can prove me wrong? Good for you and I have no issue against that, but I am trying to put out that there has been a lot of development time going towards the booster packs and wether you see that as a good or bad thing is really what the crux of the argument is. I don't like microtransactions. I can ignore them but in this game they are becoming rather prevelant and that bothers me.
So please lets see if we can keep this civil enough to have discourse and not devolve into a flame war. If you can find me a list of costume pieces released in i13 I would happily add it to the list. As far as I can find/remember it was a bit but no more than any one booster pack. -
Quote:It is a customization option, just like auras, i reiterate, you are being literal to skew the results, power customization is a cosmetic option to allow you to customize your character's look to your preference, both in color and in some cases, effects. just like costume pieces, power customization, as well as alternate animations are effectively the same as costume pieces. By the way, i followed that thread a bit longer, did you ever get an accurate count of costume pieces in issue 13, i notice Memphis mentioned that later and you admitted you didnt get a accurate list of costume pieces from i13, since that was one of the largest free costume dumps in the game, you really should add it. or is the list also factually inaccurate, as well as a biased sampling?
Okay but how would you classify power customization? Should I just list it as:
1 Power Customization
I am not discounting it but I really can't "list" it in a way to give it a proper quantity. Go ahead and count it, feel free. I honestly can not tell you what quantity it would fall into and even if you DO quantify it then HOW you do it can be easily scewed. One who agrees with your point of view could count EVERY COLOR two times over because of light and dark. So really I just count it as power customization. It is in a realm all its own and it does affect costumes but I don't see it as a "costume option." I am seriously giving it to you so I don't see what the issue is, unless you are just trying to start a fight with me. Not all pieces on the list weigh the same so add what I did above and weigh them independantly of each other.
And no I have not found a list of costume pieces released in i13 and believe me I looked. I can not find a comprehensive list so in line with what I said feel free to correct it. Seriously at this point I am impartial to this argument as I wont be playing the game much longer. In a few weeks I will have forgotten this post and the entire argument on topic. In fact I just looked up at the patch notes for i13 on the official site and it still doesn't have a list so I can not count what isn't there. I will grant you this but when made that list I gave the disclaimer that it wasn't perfect.
I am NOT trying to put out an agenda, this is just the research I did and it is NOT infailable but it gives a general idea. -
Quote:No I stated that I wasn't going to count improved costume pieces because I don't really see them as "new" persay. If you want to go ahead and add the, I think it is 6?, tails to the list and it is still heavily in favor of the boosters. Notice that I didn't count the animated tails that came from the mutant booster either so, fair is fair.ok, no that was ridiculously biased and pretty much worthless, the intensely narrow definition of costume purposely skewed the results. ignoring both improvements to costume pieces(tails) and power customization pretty much rendered that invalid.
As for power customization how would you count that? Seriously? Each color is a new costume piece? Or are you talking about alternate animations? And how are they apart of thier costume?
You can let power customization weigh in for yourself but I took a very explicit meaning of costume pieces and kept to it, for both sides.
If YOU want to count power customization then go right ahead and count it the way you want to. I just personal do not see a reasonable way to count it. It is its own quanitity and so I left it alone.
If you want to get REALLY litteral, then it is NOT part of your costume. It is under a different tab entierly and something that really doesn't affect your actual costume.
EDIT:
Nethergoat I am not trying to make an argument or make a case for this game being so "ebil!!!" I am just adding to the conversation. It really doesn't matter to me what people do or if they keep playing, great go right ahead. I am not even making the argument that there is an REAL and quantifiable drop in content. To me there has been a drop in the release of new playable content. Most of what has been released in the last couple of years has been quality of life updates which are not bad but not what I am looking for in a game.
But why even bother, you are just trying to start a flame war and yell down the oposition and I wont buy into it. It is great you are passionate about the game you play. I don't enjoy it. So I am quiting. There is nothing here to argue, even if you don't like my points perhapes you can take solice in the fact that I will be gone soon? -
Quote:I may have canceled my sub lately but I can still post for a bit so on that...Actually you're not paying for continued development. It's not in the EULA like some have claimed, but it has been in more than one developer statement over the years, that continued development costs are absorbed in order to grow the subscriber base and reduce subscriber churn, not as a figured cost in the game's overhead.
As for the trend you keep trying to maintain is there, you or someone else should really make a concerted effort to go look and count. Because while it's indisputable that they've done more paid for additions to the game over the years, I have serious doubts that there has been a legitimate decline in the number of free things added.
Lemur Lad I really try and keep things sane around here and try to remain neutral even though at this point I have come to loath this game. I did exactly as you asked before and posted the results in another topic, I can't find it right this moment but after combing through patch notes on the official site and Paragon Wiki I came up with a final count of the past two years, roughly when the first booster, the Wedding Pack, was added, and it came out that we have recieved three times as many costume pieces as part of boosters packs as opposed to free releases.
If this is what you were asking for I could run the numbers again and give you a booster by booster and issue by issue post that gives you the information.
On the argument that we pay $15 a month for content patches and new releases vs access to the servers, well...if you take the side of the later good for you. But you know what? I have played a LOT of MMOs and if any of the stoped releasing new content I would have no problem dropping my sub. Understand that it is NOT unreasonable to expect your $15 a month to go a certain distance. It is a simple case of the free market, I can pay $15 for more elsewhere so why not go? If you really do enjoy this game so much that you will pay the $15 a month no matter what the dev team did then you are a "fanboi." But I seriously doubt that MOST people in this thread would do that, ONE noted example comes to mind...
BUT you can still enjoy this game to tolerate a decrease in content while still paying the same price but not be happy about it. So please don't advise people who are unhappy with the current state of affairs within the game to leave. Some people just want it to be better and complaining IS saying that, "Hey I love the game, but I just don't understand why ____."
Those of us truely unhappy with what the game has become and how insular the community has become, like myself, we have the option of unsubing. Which I did. And I wont be back in the foreseable future.
EDIT:
Found a link to the page where I have the count. It is a little biased I grant you I was angry at the time of writing.
http://boards.cityofheroes.com/showt...63#post3062063
So that gives you a general idea, give or take a few pieces I may have missed. -
People don't really recruit anymore for numerous reasons...
1. Not a lot of new people in the game, most people are well established in a group already and put their alts in the group as well.
2. A lot of people are starting off in Praetoria and thus no SGs. As with one they are usually already apart of a group anway.
3. SGs really have lost a lot of their meaning...I mean really there is no good reason to be apart of one anymore. With teleporters becoming obsolete in i19, what point do they have?
SGs are for friends nowadays and starting one is next to impossible.
I know, my wife and I tried and have recently given up on it as well as deciding to leave the game. SGs really are about friends and I am sure if you went advertising that you are looking for one people will be happy to pick you up. Just don't expect to see broadcast all that often anymore as it is becoming rather pointless. -
Quote:Well the immortal lines also has a way of saying "sure. kill my character! She can comeback!" which fits in well with CoH style RP, as people want to kill kill kill, during those fights a lot of times...with characters that would never hold back the killing blow or the fury would just be to much.
Immortality tends to make it so that common characteristic can be playered out.
Actually I try and AVOID the "I am invulnerable!" take on immortality. To me it means that they do not age, that is all. If I wanted my characters to die I would let them and that would be that. I will never allow myself to be put in the position where I have no choice what happens to my character. That is to say I will never enter a fight unless I know generally what we, the players involved, want to happen. A good example is that my wife and a couple of SG-mates got into an improptu fight in the D and I of course defended her. A Fire/ Dom said something along the lines of, "Engulfs you in flame burning you down to your bones." And I just said more or less, "lol wut?" and ignored it.
I really like to play on the psycological aspects of immortality of someone who has seen the rise and fall of civilizations, seeing everything they know fade away time after time. It is a fun concept. -
I actually thought about this for a long time because most of my characters I play tend to be immortal, because it makes the stagnant world in which games take place easier to explain when my character hasn't aged in the last six years, and to a point they deal greatly with immortality and it's downsides.
My namesake is around 2500 years old born in northren Europe, traveled through ancient Russia/Mid-Asia to China for the Three Kingdom Era and that is much of his character. For comparison I would put him as close to Moon Knight or Taskmaster. Immortality leaves a lot of time to perfect the art of combat and such. Now that I think about it he has a tinge of Sentry in him for the idea of restraining ones self for fear of hurting the ones you love....Really he is a lot of things and I don't think I can pin him to one stereotype.
The character I am focusing on now, Pyrogenic Gore, is totally the troubled wack job along the lines of Deadpool. I don't play him over the top because I feel like it is funny, I do it because he is "Promethean man" given immortality in the form of a fire elemental infused within him. He deals with immortality by ignoring reality. Being alive and outliving everyone you care about makes you less prone to attaching to people and makes you into a smart *** jerk who has a joke for every occasion. But inside you are a pretty screwed up guy. So yeah, I think Deadpool is really an apt comparison for the character and the Troubled Weirdo that is so common in these days. -
Two recently actually...
Hour of Darkness and Dirge of Malevolence.
Both of which I have on Virtue but still haven't decided on a character. -
Are you ready for this? Bet you would never have seen it coming...
PvP.
That is right, PvP. The scapegoat and red headed step child of this game is what brought me here.
My buddy told me about how fast paced and awsome the PvP was so I gave the game a try and as soon as I set foot in BB I was hooked.
What keeps me around? Eh, my wife plays...that is about it. -
To be honest and reasonable...
1. Base overhauls. Seriously bases need some love as the current options are really just sad. Why do the chairs not fit a single body type? Mostly this can be achieved by adding more items, while a complete overhaul of the entire system would be awsome new items would got a LONG way. This leads me to point two...
2. TRUE PLAYER CREATED CONTENT. Tell me what practicle reason do we have for not being able to build our own maps for AE? The exp gain is already poor enough as is and people will ALWAYS FIND A WAY TO FARM. This may help farming but it will also go a long way in making AE a much better experiences. I mean just use base building as a template and let it roll!
3. I would like them to revist power customization. Why? Because I feel the "dark" option is way to saturated and comes out "muddy." Minor concern really but I just can't get a lot of powers to look right with dark. Plus it would be nice to include PPPs/APPs as well as pool powers.
4. Honest to god PvP changes that take feedback from the community to make it a system worth enjoying with actual rewards. Enough said.
5. Actually storyline improvement in terms of older content, Coming Storm says what? Also PLEASE build more contacts for red side that don't make you the whipping boy/Arachnos. For blue side, give contacts with actual stories! Blue side contacts have a lot of random fluff that really doesn't add to the story or even make sense. Streamline it. Keep building on Praetoria but don't ignore old content for it.
6. More like the CoP. Task that require larger groups are good for the SG dynamic and help to build the need for community. I feel that this games community is far to fractured between the instances, the lack of a reason to play the same characters for long, and the lack of content that requires a decent level of teamwork. Because of it there are very few reasons for SGs in generally and it leaves people using them as alt dumps or just forgetting about it. I want the community to strengthen its bond, not continue to become so insular.
7. More new power sets. Do I need to clarify? I don't care what I give everything that comes out a fair chance but it is always nice to have more.
8. Costume pieces. Seriously....That I don't have to pay for....
9. New Epics. I like the idea of epics. I like how unique they are. I hate the VEAT story arc but I still like the ATs for their flavor. Always a nice touch. -
So now that I am less angry as this game has lately been a lot of stress for me, NOT related to the Devs stupid IG crap, I think I should post a more serious answer.
Hopefully what ever is coming is something of actually substance. Lately we have been getting a LOT of QOL changes added to the game which are nice without a doubt but it is really hard to get excited about issues when I know I will still be doing the same things I have been doing for the past couple of years just with a new shinny layer added to it. I am talking about things like AE, Power Customization, Ultra Mode, etc. It is all just a shinny layer added to the existing content and frankly I really want something new if that makes sense.
Pre-emptive response to someone who says AE is what I was asking for. With the restrictions in place with AE the content you get out of it is much along the lines of playing shinny newspaper/radio missions. AE to me is to restriciting to be truely game changing.
ALSO if it is nothing but weather...yeeeeah that would be the lamest issue ever, usurping I15 for the title. -
QR: I didnt read most of this because I got tired of the anti-PvP people ranting yet again against an already beaten group of individuals...
My theroy for I20? Absolute disapointment yet again. So far they have a great track record of disapointing issues for the past two years and with GR being a big joke to me along with the Party Pack.
Seriously though? I HOPE it isn't CoX 2 because what the hell was the point of making us pay for an expansion for a game that was about to go to the way side?
What I DO hope it is is some more content, an issues that feels like it actually has substance and some costumes we DON'T have to pay for.
Maybe, just MAYBE it is a revisiting of PvP with a giant banner that says, "Sorry about I13." But you know that is a REALLY crazy theroy. -
Without a doubt the Wedding Pack.
Frankly I think you would be better off buying the Taco Bell knowing that later that night you would be paying tribute to the porcelain gods then buying the party pack. At least the Taco Bell would leave you a lasting memory. -
I'm not gonna lie...you just need time and it will come.
Maybe I have just had terrible luck but when I first came to Virtue is was seriously the worst experience I have ever had in an MMO. See in WoW there are so many people that if you don't like one group you can find another. Here you are stuck with the same small group of players and chances are past drama will ALWAYS come back.
True things have been getting better but maybe that is because I am becoming more and more reclusive in game... -
Quote:Oh, okay I get it! You have shown me the light!@Shade...
Yes. Yes they are putting a price tag on that stuff that those people who work at Paragon actually DO all day.
Something wrong with that? Seriously?
If you don't want the emotes included in this pack, don't buy it. Pretty simple. If you just don't want to PAY for it? Don't buy it. Pretty simple. But seriously, don't go saying that the people who work at paragon don't "focus on making people pay for everything" - it's a BUSINESS. That's what businesses DO. Just because we've had such a terrific bunch of FREE STUFF (all 6 years worth of Issues to name JUST A FEW) doesn't mean that their company is interested in giving everything away.
Non-game breaking items like these are PERFECT for pay-as-you-like items. Not so perfect are things like "entire zones of content" or "contact trees you can only get by buying" (and I'm not talking about the EXPANSION set here, as it was long overdue to have a product ON THE SHELVES somewhere). Lots of other games use that very thing, "oh the game's free per month but if you WANT to play, you're going to have to buy this and that and the other thing.
Not so, here. If you want to play, you pay your fees. If you want extra doodads, costumes and such that simply don't impact the way the game is played... then these packs offer a nice extra touch.
Maybe someone should let the other competing MMOs in the business world that it is now acceptable to charge a monthly fee AND charge for any new content no matter how small.... -
Yeah this is just sad, I honestly thought this was a joke at first glance.
You know what makes it even worse? For those of you who have played Guild Wars and watched the trailer...notice something a little similar?
I said it before and I will say it again. The Devs seem to be focused on making us pay for everything they can possibly put a price tag on.
Definately a pass for me as well. -
Favorite hero: Moonknight
Favorite villain: Venom
I know Venom isn't much of a villain in some peoples mind but that is why I argue he is a good villain. -
I agree with most of what you are saying but because it is bad as it is now is not a good reason to let it die. I would argue that because it is so bad they should work on making it better and TRY to get people into it. If they feel that they can draw new customers in with GR then why couldn't they change PvP to try and draw new customers?
I am not saying PvP is crucial for success and I never will say that, but I do think that it is something that would a wise invesment for Paragon Studios if not for this game but for future games. Use this game a spring board for future games in what you want to set up. Obviously they have learned what NOT to do with PvP but there is still plenty of time to learn the right things to do.
CoX wasn't built with PvP in mind is no reason to forget PvP exist.
EDIT: Memphis you are correct but I just don't want to give up on something I used to enjoy so much. My globals friends list quit the day i13 went through and I still have yet to find a place I can really feel welcome in this game. Aion may not be doing as great as it could be but it still goes to show the INTEREST is there for a good PvP game. The problem is finding a good PvP game. -
You know I am getting really tired of this community constantly bad mouthing PvP and PvPers. There is OBVIOUSLY a market for PvP despite all of your outcries that it is a nominal part of any game. Off the top of my head I can not name a single MMO that has not had PvP in some form released in the past year but I can name a few that had a focus on it and guess what? They are doing better than this game.
No one is asking for PvP to become the new focus of the dev team but it is not unreasonable to ask that the devs at least acknowledge it has problems many of which are THEIR faults.
Not everyone wants to see PvP removed. Not everyone hates competition. Just like not everyone likes PvP. So where is this awsome community I always hear about in this game? I have yet to see it.Anti-PvPers who shoot down any idea they feel would change the game in anyway that might affect them with some sort of diservice. You get the same attitude in topics about peoples disatisfaction with Going Rogue. Why does it matter so much to you all that some people feel differently?
NO portion of a game should just be "cut" because it doesn't have that many participants. The goal SHOULD be to build up the smaller communties and overall build the entire community. Not to focus time and resources on keeping those happy with the game...even happier. Happy people will stay longer than those who are unhappy.
