Justice Blues, since the Archives are not yet back up, I will send you the review file for Future Skulls. However, the new forums doesn't actually list your e-mail, instead it opens up it's own window to send you the message directly, and I'm not seeing the "Attach File" option. If you could PM me your e-mail Address, I'll get the file to you.
Wow - mine got reviewed, cool. Any idea if/when the archives of past shows will be back online? (I just saw this post tonight and am interested in hearing the actual review based on the comments you two left in the arc 'comment's section. Thanks fior taking the time.

    The AE arguement

As a person who was part of the closed beta test for the original CoH (was invited in December of 2003 - when about 500 peope total were part of the closed test group); considering that, by your logic, the 'original base design' was:

    - Level Cap of 40
    - No capes, no auras
    - 5 Task Forces total
    - No badges
    - No PvP
    - No Villains
    - 7 City Zones (including the Hazard zones)
    - No SG bases

(and I'm sure there was other stuff added early on that I'm forgetting to list, which WAS NOT part of CoH on public 'opening day' back in April of 2004)

Sorry, but your logic falls flat. CoH changed DRASTICALLY with each early issue, and had these changes not come, many people (including myself) would have left long ago abd not looked back.

Okay, if you want to be technical:

"Normally is does" is now incorrect as that won't be the case for any future closed beta sessions; as it gives the impression character creator access will be back. Going what by what the Devs had sid, it will not.

    ^^^
That's incorrect. In the last posts from Castle and Babs on this subject, the Devs always wanted to complete restrict the closed beta to the players invited to them; but they were unable to figure out how to block the character creator until recently. So, from this CoX closed beta forward, I would expect the character creator to be blocked until you're either:

    1) Invited to the given closed beta
    or
    2) The open beta phase starts

I completely disagree, i'm throwing rocks at people mismanaging a very large software project, furthermore, I more than completely disagree, 1 Week is abysmal, a couple of them were more like 2 weeks, 1 day is reasonable, 2 days is unreasonable, for all of it, the fixes and punishment.

They need to apply immediate pot bellied stove to any punishments, waiting a week is abusive and confusing to players.

There are many strategies they could have employed to handle the exploits in a timely manner, yes they could have instantly temporarily disabled Mito's then applied a comprehensive fix later, that would be OK, waiting 2 weeks to do anything at all isn't.
Where you throw out UNSUPPORTED DATA - ie the percentage of 'nerfs' caused by PLers and Farmers. Youneed to provide a SOURCE (aka a link to a Dev post or other info) that SUBSTANCIATES your claim. You have YET to do so in any post in this thread. At best you present some anecdotal evidence as substanciated fact; but, sorry, it doesn't work like that in a reasoned debate structure. It's not what you 'believe', it's what you can 'prove' are facts, and anecdotal evidence and personal opinion do not qualify.

Here you showo your igniorance of this situation as AE ALREADY give less XP than normal in game missions. Normal in game missions give a completeion XP bonus. AE missions DO NOT. Also normal missions give you a little extra XP bomus per kill in a mission, takem from your 'PatrolXP' pool (of course if you have no PatrolXP left on that character, you do not get that; buut OTHER THAN DEBT, the AE makes no use of PatrolXP.

    2. Removed auto SK,
Yes, I'd still use it and craete for it. Never understood myself why they have an auto SK up to mission level in the AE.

[quote3. Limited the spawn sizes and amount of bosses per map?[/quote]

Again, this shows you've never created anything in AE as all maps and opjectives DO have spawn size limits and Boss objective limits - they're the same limits imposed on the Devs who create real missions. If you're suggesting some further limitations, then yes, I probably would, but I'd be upset that I could no longer create missions that have the same spawn sizes as Dev missions.

    4. Finally, Made maps only available to zones of that lvl?
I must be mis-reading something here as this to me makes no sense. The only level locked maps and content in the game currently are Hazard onees, and certain SF's and TF's. You can be level one and STILL zone into PI (and hell, that was the big PL deal before AE hit.

Again I find it interesting that the AE currently HAS to of the 4 changes you propose and ask about, yet you didn't realize this when coming up with your post. It would probably be good for people who post change suggestions fpr the AE to KNOW how the systems works in the first place (imo).

    Really, REALLY annoying...
Yep, I'll agree with that. I do wish the devs would state when they add or remove options and items from the AE ediotor (they sure as heck did not when the removed the Crey Hero Lab map - although that was a few patches ago).

They don't need to say WHY something is removed (and I would agree with that only because it might give an exploter clues on where to look for other MA exploits); just that it was indeed removed/changed, etc; so that people who do care about keeping yjeir arcs up and running have a chance to KNOW there is a change that affects one or more of their arcs.

The fact that you would favor a stupid player that doesnt take breaks over a skilled player that does have to pee or other stuff is foolish. As soon as I see a level 50 without the three month vet badge I ask for the star and I kick them out off the team.

I hold a vey stong policy on AE PL'd toons on my teams, that policy is that if they like to gains levels fast they can go with their own kind and stay in that ugly building (and not figurative...that building is physically ugly)
Umm, you DO realize that there were and still are MANY players who do what you've described - yet have NEVER used AE - and they focus on the more 'social' aspects of the game and in all honesty, while they do missions and level, it's not their main focus in game. As someone who's seen this type of behavior since vlosed beta (December 2003); I amazed at the posts like this which try to claim that before AE we NEVER had players who:

    - Picked powers more on a whim then for either playability in groups.

    - Didn't slot powers optimally.

    - Reached level 50 but still didn't really know how to play their character in groups or use tactics in a TF or SF.

etc. All the above existed in about the same proportion as the 'Post AE' game. It just seems now that anyone who dislikes the current enviroment of the game (and AE has changed it, but honestly not that much), points the AE as the cause of ALL the game's current issues.

Farming and explotive farming have been around in CoH since beta, and will (unfortunately for exploitive farming) will continue until the day the servers are shut down for good (and no, I'm not at all impling that this is coming anytime soon, just making an observation).

From what my friend tells me about the beta for CO, we have nothing to worry about that game is a hotter piece of poo than warm manure.

I personally do not like the cartoon comic book look, reminds me of color by the numbers for the blind. It is too reminiscent of WoW and w/o the WoW standards.

I saw an interview where good ol' statesman is mentioning all of the things that "This" superhero MMO would have, he makes comments bout how "This" MMO will have detailed character creation, where you can place blasts locations or any of that.

As for DCUO, their base premise is the fan base and physics object...I hate that term...Physics Object...everything in physics can be an object...stoopid DC, instead they should call it interactables...sounds better.

But yea, DCUO is going for previous decades worth of integrity and intractables. CO is going for customization that we already have a heavy foothold on and by stating that they are the first to offer such details is a joke seeing as it was Jack Emert himself that made so many problem from what I recall.

If NCSoft really feels like they are in trouble and have to rush issues to compete then they are personally looking at it from the wrong point of view. If they want to compete they must add more content and enough in-game events to keep the consumer base active. Going Rogue will be step in the right direction but in general, the Devs need to add more content, lore, stories. Giving us a few zone revamps, Fixing PvP in the future will help, adding new non-proliferated powersets.

In the long run, CoX has legitimate competition from DCUO and only for the large consumer pool of resources like movies, comics and a consumer base that is multi-demographical.
I tend to think Champions Online will take a while to get going. Hell, they have Open beta ONLY if you've pre-ordwered; and a special limited (until 9/1/09 - CO 'go live' date) Lifetime Supscription off to CO for $200.00 (and as an 'added' perk, you get into the Star Trek Online closed beta later this year).

Now some folks might see this as 'Wow, what a deal'; BUT, honestly, if you fealt the game was really stellar; why offer a 'lifetime' subscription in the first place, and why limit open beta ONLY to re-orders? Sounds like the Crytic folks are praying they get a quick infusion of cash before the game ships and the non fanbois get a real crack at it. Why would I want a lifetime subscription to a game I might find unfun to actually play?

The bolded part is how to interpret Castle's statement. The code that was supposed to block non-I16 beta testers isn't working so they took the servers down to make it work.

What does that matter, as long as they are having fun in game, honestly? Everytime someone starts one of these 'AE is....' threads in all the agnst over what it's doing to new players; people forget one thing the Devs themselves stated about the AE:

"It's an alternate (yet valid) method to get from level 1 to level 50 should a player so choose."

(And no, I DON'T condone 'exploitive' farming or power-leveling and neither do the Devs, so that's not what I'm talking about or implying at all when I'm talking about AE as an alternate leveling method).

Also, it just seem to be more true then not that those who complain about not being able to fimnds teams; are the same ones used to logging in, getting a blind invite, and going from there. Those days are numbered, and will be numbered even moreso when I16 hits. Those days are gone and are never coming back; so adjust or /ragequit, makes no difference.

I also want to chime in and say I've been in CoX off and on since December 2003 (early closed beta); and like many of the folks above I had burned out and was 'off and on' with CoH from Issue 5 on. Issue 9 held my interest (with the Invention system) a bit longer than most of the other post I5 issues, but I still burned out and when to my off and on here and there mode; until I14 and the AE. Now I'm back with more new alts (although I don't farm or PL because this game is so incredibly easy compared to any other MMO out there, there's no point; not to mention the fact CoX has NEVER had an 'endgame' - all the 'raiding' (via TF/SF) is don AS you level up, so PLing is a waste IMO; unless you PvP hardcore I guess); and I've re-upped for longer so far than with any post I5 issue.

That said, nothing will EVER stop Farming (exploitive of otherwise) completely in any MMO, ever; no matter what a Dev team does. Compared to the Playerbase, a Dev Team is a small but focused group always jumping to the next deadline; so 150K+ players are ALWAYS going to find the exploits and holes a Dev Team misses; and use them as long as possible. The balance that has to be struck, is making sure Farming is reigned in enough WITHOUT totally gutting some new content or feature that the VAST majority of the regular playerbase (aka the non min-maxing power gamers; you know those that just play with their frieds to have fun and don't worry about level speed, efficient enhancement slotting, etc. - and that IS the majority of Players in ANY MMO).

Anything that 99% stops Farming and PLing in the AE would also gut the functionality of the AE; so while the Devs will be sure to plug major holes and exploits, I would not expect the AE XP gain/reward structure to change drastically. If the Devs go that route, it will most likely kill this new, innovative feature, and cost them just as many subs as PL burnout.

This is the jist of farming, as I understand things.

I do farm, I have so many alts that I want to play and I am tired of the low level grind, but my missions are some serious high risk.

In fact, no one has managed to live through one of my farm runs (excpet my farmer of course). That makes my mission high risk...right?

OK, my real question is: What risk is there?

There is no debt in AE so if you die...er...well, whoop-dee do!!

Seriously...what risk is there in any AE missions?

Perhaps if XP were removed from AE (hold up: fire proof underwear is around here somewhere).

    What I purpose is:

    Remove XP from AE missions.
    Leave Tickets in AE missions.
Add regular salavage/enhancement/recipe drops to AE missions.

Could this be abused? Sure...but ANYTHING in this game can be abused. Think about how many farms there were before AE. This isn't anything new, it's just easier.

    Anyways...that's my thought. Agree? Disagree?
Um, there is debt im AE missions. You're probably not seeing any these days because the new 'Patrol XP' is used and subtracted from before any real debt is applied eiter in the 'real' CoX or AE arcs. Its been like this since patrol XP was added to the game.

Sorry, but I would like to see your hard data that backs up that the above is 'universally agreed upon'; as I don't think you speak for the entire, or even a mojority of the CoX playerbase.

The system is as good as the people that use it; and as long as they are consistent with their ratings, it at least gives other people some guage to go by. Is the system perfect? No, but no rating system ever has been.

It IS a game - not a job, not an important matter of real life - it should be about unwinding, relaxing, having fun and chumming with other people socially, not dumping on people just because you can.

To be fair, pretty much the only thing I said was outright wrong was that the arc never explains where Mako fits into it (It's mentioned twice on mandatory objectives in the first mission, and once again later). The rest of the time, anything I mentioned was either a clue/dialog snipped/mission info they missed or ignored, or I was explaining my rationale behind the choices I made, and why I felt they made sense to me, where their 'plot hole' had precidence in actual canon missions already, or why I felt a particular piece of criticism was too nitpicky in a game where you strap on spandex and punch incorporeal undead to death somehow.

It's entirely possible for a person to 'not get an arc' if they missed/ignored some dialog, or they had a different interpretation from the author; and I don't see why it's seen as bad for the author to say 'this is what I intended when it was written, I feel you've interpreted this incorrectly from what was presented'. They did write it after all, so presuming to tell -them- what they were thinking when they wrote it seems a little silly.

More importantly - there's also a big difference between constructive criticism, and just being rude. It's perfectly possible to help an author, make them receptive to your ideas, and improve an arc, but it goes both ways. If you're not willing to admit you made a mistake in your review, if you want to give comments such as 'I with this could be deleted from the game', 'I wish I could give this -5 stars', 'your arc committed a litany of sins too long to list', and so on, well, no author should be told to just quietly sit there and take abuse heaped on them, often without actual merit - that helps nobody. That just creates an atmosphere toxic to writers and it gives people inclined to spread misery the run of the farm. If you want to give negative criticism, there are ways to do it politely and constructively. If you can't be bothered to do at least that, don't be suprised when people are justifiably frustrated with what you're trying to tell them. Acting like a jerk does nothing positive for the game, but a little bit of kindness, receptiveness and politeness goes a long way towards increasing the quality of the community of the game.
Belive it or not, I'm not trying to come down on you; but, what you have to understand is that when you piut something out for public consumption; the public WILL comment on it, and if you honestly can't handle all types of criticism, then perhaps you shopuld put stuff out for public consumption. I honestly still haven't played the Blight arc; but I did read a portion of the thread; and I AGREE that many of the posters were being overly n egative and downright rude; BUT, the fact is, you're going to get that EVERY TIME when you put something out. That's why it's said if you're going to be a 'writer' (and AE Arc creation is writing to a degree); you really do need to grow a very thick skin, and discriminate the feedback you get, ingoring the crap feekback AS crap feedback, and taking and analyzing what you perceive as 'good' feedback and coming up with a response by either changing something, or deciding that (whether or not you agree), the issue that garnetred some feedback is fine to you as is.

Lastly, you're right and in the end this is a game. AE Arc creation is fun for some (regardless of the feedback; and believe me, I've gotten the gamut of feedback myself, but I've also written other stuff and I have developed a method of handling feedback that works for me and doesn't ruin my enjoyment of creating an AE Arc for public use). If negative and rude feedback destroys any enjoyment you might get from craeting an AE Arc; then I'd say that CoH MA arc writing isn't for you. That in NO WAY infers that there is anything 'wrong' with you; I just agree that when playing a game you should stick with what you find enjoyable in the myriad of options available in game.

But, complaing about the type of feedback you receive isn't going to change what you receive; and those who do the overly rude feedback do it for the sole purpose of seeing a person react. Thus, that's where learning to disregard and completely ignore certain types of feedback comes in handy, as once they see they can't get a rise out of you, they move on and don't come back.

Now, if when I get to the top of Police_Woman's queue she absolutely hates my arc and I throw a hissy fit? Then that comment would make some sense.
It DOESN'T MATTER wether or not the Arc's writer asked for a review; he PUBLISHED the Arc, and there are PLENTY of people who review random published arcs on their own; and as soon as there were some negative comments the author came out and started stating reviewers were 'wrong'; 'didn't get the arc', etc.

If you CAN'T take criticism (good or bad); DON'T put your stuff out there for public consumption. Period. (And yes, you can publish, play an arc with your SG and friends, and Unpublish immediately; so NOT putting an Arc out publically, but still playing for 'rewards' is definitely possible.)
  20. Just thopught of another question: In your group; are some PCs in SG mode while others are not? (Just trying to see if SG status may play a part).

What, running an AE mission, killing a few MOBs then quiting an seeing if the same MOBs in the 'real game' (god, that's a bad term) give more? yep, real hard and time consuming to test this.
  22. I'd also like to reccomend the arc in my sig:

"Is It Live Or Is It Memory-X" (Arc ID: 70210)

    Missions: 5
    Level Range: 40-54
Note: the opening mission IS a 'Defeat All' (You're stoping a bank heist); but it's a smal map.

I do understand if that makes your group want to bypass it, but I do think the other 4 missions in the arc do fit your stated requirements. I did some tweaking post I15, so I'm looking for any feedback you wish to give.

And this is why, in my opinion, MA will ultimately be nothing more than a PLing tool. Some people really need to take a step back and think about what CoH is. It's a game first and foremost so, the focus for each individual player is what is fun for them and them alone. To be honest, given how much time it takes to write a non-farm MA I'm surprised that any players write them at all. From a purely "in game" economic perspective there is really no reason to do so because you can earn tickets much faster from an MA farm anyway. Given this, the only reason a player would write one is for their friends and, hopefully, other players to enjoy. So, since CoH is about having fun, I would hazard a guess that most players would find negative reviews to fall pretty strongly into the "not fun" category. As a result, getting such negative reinforcement will probably stop your average player from bothering to write another MA in the future. This is why I believe that harsh and unconstructive reviewers (and threads like this) ultimately aren't doing MA any favors and, will ultimately just reduce the number of MA attempts at storytelling, leaving it a farmer's paradise.

The bottom line for me is that if you are looking for the next great American story, joining a writer's group is the way to go about it. Searching for it in a video game is like looking for tickets to the bus at the train station.

haven't played the Arc in question, but I have to say, I find all the controversy fascinating. I saw this, and wanted to respond because the gist of the comment is that he doesn't understand WHY anyone would find creating an Arc 'fun'; and in a smaller sense intinates that if it was for the 'in game' awards (aka MA tickets) its quicker to just run arc and not write them.

I to date have written one arc (working on number two). It took me about 3 weeks to write it to where I thought it was first publishable (average 3 hours a night - and in addition to writing, I did a lot of testing too).

Personally, all that in itself was A LOT of fun because I was attempting t translate a story I'd created for the pen and paper RPG Villains & Vigilantes as a GM. I actually had to modify it a fair bit due to MA constraints, and one aspect was inprossible to do in the MA. That said, I was pretty happy with the end result, and honestly (ratings wise, it's held up pretty well - 4 star average; but I KNOW it's gotten one and two starred too; an some of those folks have commented and some haven't). BUT, for some (like me); being able to just create a story that I like; and have OTHER people I don't know decide to go and experience it (regardless of how they rate it in the end) is a big kick for me (YMMV).

I've also been around long enough to know (and my ego honestly isn't as fragile as some authors that I've seen who unfortunately fall apart at the first negative review; or believe that becuase the player missed/wasn't interested in looking at a Clue, or a piece of dialogue the author feels is SO important; that the player should not be allowed to rate the arc, etc.

A couple of things are just facts that have been known since peope first started letting creating stories for other people:

    1) Some people will LOVE what you did and think it's the best thing ever.

    2) Some people will be totally abivialent about yoyur work and not really care one way or the other.

    3) Some people will HATE your work, and think it's th worst thing eever done, and don't understand why you could put it out for others to see/read/experience.

AND - If you somehow believe what you created is the EXCEPTION to the above, then you'll never be happy about your work; as nothing yet written has been immune to the above from the Bible to Shakesphere.

Also, no matter how much you believe you've made everything SO CRYSTAL CLEAR that there's only one 'right' way to interpret what you created; and EVERYONE who pays attention will see EXACTLY what you meant the way you meant it; it's just NOT the case.

Putting anything out for public consumption is a big risk; and if you don't expect, or cannot take criticism; or worse are unable to digest criticism and let the 'good' critiscism make you feel good; and acn't acknowledge the 'bad' criticism, when it has valid points; then perhaps you shouldn't hit that 'Publish' button until you or your friends want to run an arc; and then immediately unpublish it.

For me, I've managed to wade through the criticisms my Arc's received to date; and as a result of the critical criticism; I think I've managed to improve it in a variety of ways. Does that mean I expect it to become a 5 star HoF, or Dev Choice arc? Nope, I don't think it'll ever happen. But, I'm prretty happy with it as it stands; because it does tell the story I wanted; and does it in a way that most people can understand; and I do get some feeling of satisfaction from that.
    ^^^^
So, all that is why I am continuing to write MA arcs; and find the overall process enjoyable, and am glad this MMO allows me to do it.

    YMMV.

It's a feature that's been requested since i14 beta, I really don't know why we didn't get that option right from the start.

And yeah, the cut-n-paste thing is annoying when you're adding a whole new mission to the middle of an arc.

    [/ QUOTE ]

I don't think that feture will ever be put in because the Devs are probably worried about people exploiting by taking a high rated arc and wholesale replacing it with a COMPLETELY different arc with just a few keystrokes.

Yes, you can actually do the exact same thing via a manual cut and paste; but as we've all expressed on here; that's a major PITA; but the Devs want it to be a PITA so people won't just wholesale swap in new arcs that retain a previous arc's ratings.
