Can You Overwrite a Published Arc With A Local One
[ QUOTE ]
The subject line says it all. As a result of some constructive conversations with my wife and several reviewers, I'm about to make some major changes to my arcs. These changes will take some time, and will be very difficult to do in one sitting. Therefore, I really don't want to do them on the published arc.
Unfortunately, I haven't found a way to overwrite a published arc with a locally-stored version of the same arc. So, my only choices as I see them are:
1. Change the status of my published arcs to "Work in Progress" and live with the fact they'll be a little off until I'm done, or...
2. Make all my changes locally, unpublish the published arc and re-publish the new version - thus losing all my ratings and plays.
I've already done that once, losing a 4.something star rating and 23 plays in the process, so that's not a happy option for me.
Are those my only two options, or am I missing something?
Thanks...

Answer: No (And believe me I wish there was too).
You have two options:
1) Unpublish the existing arc, and then republish the arc using your 'fixed' local file (you'll of course loose all ratings and the curren arc ID number).
2) Carefully cut and paste all changes into your Published arc from you local file by hand; and them hit Republish. (And I've actually don e this once, and it was a big PITA).
Good luck.
Yeah, that's what I thought. I've done both options before, and they're both PITAs. They really need an "Overwrite Published Arc" option for locally stored arcs so you can make all the changes at once and publish it without losing all your hard-earned plays and ratings.
Well, I guess it's "Work in Progress" time, since there's no way I'm doing the cut and paste route again.
Thanks.

It's a feature that's been requested since i14 beta, I really don't know why we didn't get that option right from the start.
And yeah, the cut-n-paste thing is annoying when you're adding a whole new mission to the middle of an arc.

I don't think that feture will ever be put in because the Devs are probably worried about people exploiting by taking a high rated arc and wholesale replacing it with a COMPLETELY different arc with just a few keystrokes.
Yes, you can actually do the exact same thing via a manual cut and paste; but as we've all expressed on here; that's a major PITA; but the Devs want it to be a PITA so people won't just wholesale swap in new arcs that retain a previous arc's ratings.
The best way to minimize the PITA-ness of copy-and-paste is to open the published arc, open the text file of the local arc, and then tab back and forth. But that's about as 'easy' as it currently gets.

Actually you can. If you go to the published arc, hit edit. Make the changes you want to and then the 2nd to last button will say Republish and save (I think that's what it says). The changes will be put into effect on the published arc.

But that publishes the edits you've made in that editing session, which is to an in-memory copy of the published arc.
To my knowledge, there is no way to take an existing local arc and use it to overlay an already published one. This distinction matters, because as soon as you save a published arc to a local copy, even in that editing session you begin working on the off-line copy and stop working on the published copy. (It tells you this will happen.)

The same thing can be accomplished with a few edits directly to the published arc; in particular, changing the initial dialog or description to be objectionable.
My guess is that it's more complex than that. There would need to be some kind of command that accepts the name of a new file. The compilation process would have to occur and then there'd be two copies of the arc around -- the original and the new one. There must be some limitation that makes swapping the new file for the old file non-trivial. Maybe the file produced by the arc compiler has a name that is the arc number, and changing that is not possible without major gyrations.
It may also be complicated by the fact that someone may be running the arc you're republishing (they may be currently logged in, or they might be logged out), and that has a lot of odd implications in and of itself.
