These are bare facts:
I started playing City of Heroes in April 2005, at the recommendation of a friend. I kept an active subscription up until two months ago, when I left the United States to marry a UK national. I kept up with the game though, and had planned to resume my VIP status on the first of September.
This is what it meant:
I worked a difficult, thankless job, working with teenagers who had hard, cruel lives and few options. I did what I could to help them, but it was never easy, or quick, and I never felt like a hero. I was able to feel like a hero when I logged into Victory, or Virtue, or a villain if I had a bad day and needed to blow off some steam. Or a silly concept character whose powers were granted by extra-caffeine. I could fly, or teleport, or run faster than an automobile, and take down people who abuse their power or got in my way with a lightning bolt, or an army of mechanical minions. I argued with people. I made friends. I raged, I laughed, I bragged about the first time I soloed an Archvillain. It was everyday, ordinary, magic, and it enriched my life in subtle but indelible ways. I'm going to miss playing in that world, and while I have other realms to explore, including the ones in my head, the memory of this one will always remain special to me.
Thank you, Paragon Studios for giving me a world I could retreat to again and again. Thank you for working hard to create stories and images we could inhabit. Thank you for letting us use tools that let us create our own worlds and stories others could share. Thank you for spending your time, and energy, and talents into helping us experience ordinary, everyday magic. -
Quote:I've done a lot of Lambdas with my Bots/Traps, and I haven't had any frustration with the final fight. Yes, I do end up having to do a lot of resummoning. But I haven't seen the artillery barrage every hit me for anything more than negligible damage. I also stay pretty close to Marauder except when he activates Nova Fist. Twice I've been the only significant source of -regen in the league, and that required I stay close to M. If I die in that section of the trial, it's usually due to Marauder's reinforcements, and not the AV or any of his exotic attacks.I take it you've never taken an MM on a Lambda run then, to experience just how frustrating it is?
If anything's frustrating in Lambda, it's the sabotage phase. I am nearly constantly out of bodyguard range while rushing through the corridors for the next crate or chamber, FFG does not keep up, so I'm vulnerable to being mezzed by grumpy seers, and a loud clattering army of mechanical terrors can create a ton of aggro if I'm not careful.
I'm okay with this. I think bots/traps shines in the BAF, particularly. We have a lot of tools at our disposal to deal with the escaped prisoners, and having a small army means that sequestration is less likely to be enforced on us (I've never gotten more than 1 warning). I think that the variety of exotic abilities and tactics means that at some point everyone will be at a disadvantage. -
Quote:A customer support representative restored most of my rewards a little less than 24 hours after my initial petition.Out of my 4 Rares crafted so far, only my Illusion/Rad lost his rewards from the STF. Crafted after LR defeated, then slotted. We then attacked the flier again, right before its defeated, it wiped our team in a mapserve. 5 of the 8 on team lost their Rare, 3 kept them. I did have Phantasm out as well as PA.
I petitioned the loss of all STF rewards, hopefully I will hear back about getting the credit back. -
Quote:Sure. That's a great idea. Even if Support can give me back the rewards I should have had from last nights LRSF and can have my Rare Slot, I then need to NOT use my top two tier pets, making me effectively useless! Genius!

Provided you're a Robotics Mastermind, you should be able to use all of your henchman with a level shift provided that you do not use Upgrade on the Assault Bot or protector bots.
Edited to add: and with a hotfix being applied very shortly, this may no longer be an issue. -
Quote:
I would therefore conclude, initially, that the cause of the mapserver issue is summoned entities by a summoned entity that is level shifted - both Assault Bots (in Missile Patches) and Protector Bots (Seeker Drones) cause a summoned entity with the L32 Upgrade, whereas the Battle Drones do not.
Does this tally with anyone elses experience?
My experiences this morning directly correlate with your findings. Without fail, every time protector bots summoned seeker drones I experienced a mapserver. I also experienced a mapserver every time the assault bot summoned more than one burn patch with incendiary missiles.
I ran missions with level shifted henchmen who were not upgraded and experienced no unusual problems in play. -
Quote:Phantom Army doesn't cause the problem, but Phantasm does. Phantasm casts a Decoy Phantasm. Fulcrum Shift is a pseudopet, and those don't seem to be triggering the problem.
There does seem to be a correlation between pets who summon their own pets and the crashes. I ran through a variety of different scenarios solo this morning in tip and newspaper missions on my Bots/traps MM and these are my results:
Protector Bots summon seeker drones= crashed 100% of the time.
Assault Bot uses incendiary missiles= crash, but only about 50% of the time. If only one burn patch is summoned, or all enemies die quickly after missile usage I did not experience a crash. Multiple burn patches at the beginning of engaging an enemy resulted in crashes.
Acid Mortar=no crashing experienced.
Poison trap=no crashing experienced.
Running missions with all henchman/available traps, but no upgrades on bots=no crashing experienced.
Mastermind summons own seeker drones=no crashing
Hopefully this is helpful. -
Team on Victory completed STF at approximately 12:30pm MST. All received rewards. Crafted the Spiritual Total Core Revamp. Shortly after I attempted to slot it, the entire team got mapservered. When we logged back in, all rewards were gone, but the mission was flagged as completed (still have a "return to contact" message).

Quote:Please note that at no point in my post did I invoke the Meyers-Briggs Type indicator. Nearly every modern theory of personality includes extroversion/introversion as key traits whether as a single continuum, or as dominant and secondary traits (as in Jungian theory). I am personally uncomfortable with the MBTI as an assessment because of it relies solely on self-report. My point was to define introversion as it exists in every theory of personality that I am aware of and not as some sort of social disorder. However, to be fair, the age of 3 remark is more of when stuff get's set in motion, more so than the same personality you'll have at 12 and 18. I've known a plurality of folks who have changed between intj and intp which are admittedly fairly close to begin with . I knew only one person who did test away from introvert to extrovert, and that is an oddity, and most likely has to do more with the testing and the 16 personality traits being more of scales than necessarily hard definitions .
Quote:It is important to realize differences in terms as well. However, if someone is finding it repugnant to interact with other people, I believe that goes a bit beyond the simple personality difference. At the very least, it doesn't seem like a game genre based on being massively multiplayer is the best idea for them. I imagine, however, that was more a case of hyperbole, and it's more an issue that the party in question finds it enjoyable to group in smaller amounts than they perceive the 'other' content requiring. It's pretty important to realize that both extreme ends of the scale have bad consequences, introvert is perhaps the easier to see since we are social creatures.
Please also note that I never argued for solo content, or dismissed the WST and whatever's coming in I20. I defined a term that was being used incorrectly and pointed out some differences in introverts that are did not seem to be readily apparent to some extroverts. I personally, am thrilled about the WST, and eagerly awaiting the next morsel of information about I20. But as a fairly strongly expressed introvert, I can certainly see where others may not be so thrilled, and I think it's important to note that those people are not necessarily suffering from any sort of psychological disorder. -
Quote:I apologize in advance for taking the thread slightly off-topic, but I feel it imperative that I correct some misconceptions that people have propagated in this thread. You are not nearly the only person doing so, but you are the most recent, and I find it easiest to address some problematic thinking by directly addressing you. There are, however, people claiming that being shy or being an introvert (I was very introverted, but I got over it to a large degree. It's not permanent unless you allow it to be) is some sort of hindrance to getting what they want, and are trying to garner pity for themselves. If they can manage to post on a forum regularly (and be quite vocal and verbose while doing so), they can deal with teaming with strangers for as long as it takes to gain a reward. Many of them seem to have found a Super Group, so they've already taken steps to get out of their self-imposed shell.
Introversion is not synonymous with social anxiety. An introvert is not necessarily shy, socially maladroit, a social outcast, or a shrinking violet. Introversion is a personality trait; by its very nature more likely to be "permanent" than not, since most personality traits are fixed by the age of three. An introvert is a person who tends to prefer solitary activities and introspection to group activities; in general, introverts tend to feel energized by reflection and drained by interaction. This does not mean that they cannot enjoy social interaction, nor does it mean that introverts are afraid of other people, or incapable of "teaming with strangers." It does mean that some introverts may find the prospect of teaming with strangers tiring, or even deeply unpleasant. If one plays a game as source of enjoyment, why do something one finds repugnant?
I find it baffling that you would think think that personality traits are something to "get over." I also find it unfortunate that you seem to think extroversion is always preferable to introversion. Most of the writers I know are introverts, and I'm quite happy that they're able to use their introspective thought processes to create beautiful and luminous fiction.
Most importantly, I think it's important to dispel the notion that introverts are people who really want to break out of their shell, and be the center of attention, and talk to everyone all the time. People who desire such a thing are most likely extroverts, albeit socially awkward ones. Just as socially adept introverts exist, so do socially inept extroverts. It's an important distinction that introversion/extroversion in no way quantifies ability; they're a matter of preference and comfort. Introverts tend to prefer and feel energized by solitary activities and tend to feel drained by social situations. Extroverts tend towards the exact opposite. -
Quote:This hasn't been my experience. I've done multiple Apex, Tin Mage, Lord Recluse, Lady Gray, Statesman, Kahn, and Imperious Task Forces with my mastermind. I've soloed most of Maria Jenkins' arc, Viridian's arc, and Mender Remiel's arc without much difficulty (I did need another person to defeat Siege because of his auto-heal power).Level 50 content is highly biased against masterminds. Level 50 tip missions still work, but the TFs, and upper level missions are designed with bosses and AVs that wipe out all the pets within 10 seconds.
Most of the higher level content doesn't seem to penalize Masterminds excessively. Exceptions would be Apex and Tin Mage (because of how poorly the lower tier pets fair against enemies 5 and 6 levels higher) and the ITF (where the AV seems to heal more with henchies and around and spawn more nictus). While this content does require an additional challenge, it hasn't been at all insurmountable in my case. -

"Don't try and fool me no more, Jimmy; I know what it means! Marcus Cole? Marcus Nasty! You didn't go up there to complete a mission!" -
I play a bots/traps. I've done four Apexes and three Tin Mages thus far. For most of the content of either, I've felt that I was pulling my weight. I focused on control and debuffing, and used my henchies as disposable canon fodder. They still chewed through most of the enemies relatively easily, and I rarely had to resummon my protectors or assault bots outsde of fighting pylons or AVs.
The battle maiden fight causes me to have to resummon constantly, and my bots really don't do that much to her. However, they allow me to get in close to her in bodyguard and drop poison traps on her feet. With a little luck and persistance, I've been able to keep BM in the poison cloud nearly constantly. On one of the teams, we had no other -regen debuff, and weren't able to nick her without the poison trap.
On the whole, my bots/traps seemed to have less trouble with the Apex TF than the average scrapper. -
"Stay means stay. It does not mean run over to Mary McComber and punch her in the face whenever you feel like it. It does not mean run in circles after firing off your lasers. It means STAY."
"Really, Siege? Really? The evil orbital lasers, I get. But do you have to heal yourself for 1/4 of your total health EVERY time you get down to 20%? Why couldn't you just pop Unstoppable like Citadel."
"You miserable piece of junk. The next time you run up and smack anything in the face before it sets off the poison trap and the trip mine I've carefully laid in its path and stand there and brawl three feet away from them, I'm dismissing you and replacing you with a cuisinart!" -
Camelback, shotgun houses, and creole townhouses make up the vast bulk of the architecture in the slums of Neutropolis. All of those buildings look older than all the shiny new stuff. This would support somewhere around New Orleans as a viable hypothesis.

I don't think they ever granted any experience, much like the weakened destroyers in Tami Baker's arc. They're significantly weaker than normal even level enemies. Perhaps underling experience would be appropriate?

During the Assault Neuron's Tower mission from Dark Watcher I was fighting Maelstrom, and he knocked me over the side while he was at approximately 10% health. He jumped after me and, I assume fell to the ground. He no longer appears anywhere on the map that I can target him. I've spent a good thirty minutes looking for him and waiting for a response to my petition. It's possible that he was defeated as a result of falling damage, but mission objective "Defeat Maelstrom at the top of Neuron's Tower," remains.
I'm extremely reticent to restart this mission since it took nearly fifty minutes for me to defeat Noble Savage, and I'm not particularly looking forward to attempting that again. At any rate, it doesn't seem possible to complete the mission given these current circumstances, and I think it might be something that bears looking into, given that Maelstrom does use attacks that have knockback at the top of a very high tower. -
Quote:Yeah...it bugs me. Granted SOME of those people will be CoH players, and I'm OK with that, but many will not. At this point, even if our access started in the next day or two, it would feel pretty "token" assuming GR is going to keep it's 08/17 release date (I'm starting to wonder, at this point). I probably won't mess with it, and just wait for launch. If they'd wanted it to mean a good deal, they'd have had to do it back in June or early July not less than a month before the game goes live, also the fact they mentioned it on the French forums and not ours is fairly telling...but then again, the Euros have always been getting information on features before it was ever posted to us...
I guess my biggest disappointment is the lack of information we've received. As far as I can tell, no one has answered players' questions about the third tier of closed beta access (whether it's granted by pre-order as stated last year, or by pre-purchase which was available earlier this year, or whether it's even still valid). I'm glad that Avatea reassured the Francophile players that the Loyalty Program beta would start soon, but it would have been nice to have the same information in the language spoken by the majority of subscribers.
It doesn't necessarily gall me that non-players who attend Comic-Con may get to preview the game before most Loyalty customers; I hope that it hooks them and we get a new influx of interested subscribers. But it does mildly irritate me that we have received so little information about stuff in Going Rogue. There are two additional powersets being added. Neat! What are they like? We don't really the know the answer. There's a new morality system that's triggered by something called tip missions. What's that like? Well, there's an IGN article sort of talking about it, but that's suspect because its first publication had several errors (including calling Neromancy, a powerset in CoV since its inception "new").
I'm patient. I'm quite happy that fully half of the new powersets have been available months in advance of Going Rogue's launch. I'm happy overall with the direction that the game has taken in the last few years. I just wish that there had been more of a response to the questions of the community at large. Even a "we can't tell you that, but rest assured, you'll know soon" is better than silence. -
Quote:Just FYI, Avatea posted to the french forums that the Loyality Program folks will be getting in "promptly" which I assume is the translator's version of "soon."
My French isn't perfect, but it looks like Avatea said: "Don't worry, The beta for loyalty program participants has not begun, but will happen fairly soon. An email will be sent to each participant and beta forum access will be activated at the same time."
So...
Soon(tm) -
I'm a big fan of running in on bodyguard, and dropping poison trap. While the mob is choking, I usually have enough time to drop at least one trip mine. I very rarely have to re-summon using this method, as it doesn't matter if you're in melee range when everything's dead. Against particularly tough foes, I usually spend more time kiting and using caltrops and web grenade to keep everything at range, but the -regen on poison trap is crucial against tough foes with tons of hp.
Provided that you're not constantly having to re-summon, I don't think you really need to worry about your playstyle. In fact, there are going to be times when you may want to keep your bots in melee range. I try to keep close to anything that uses a lot of AOE attacks when you're at range. -
