I can take a stab at that -
I go through phases in playing this game. There have been a few months where I'm on perhaps a total of 4-5 hours - not per day, for the whole month.
So for the purposes of seeing people in-game, I'm not there. I am there for the purposes of your concern, however, BillZ, because I am paying my $15 to NCSoft by keeping my subscription active.
Why do I continue to pay a sub for a game I might not play very much if at all in any given mont? Frankly, the subscription fee is pretty minimal (even back when I was unemployed) in the overall scheme of household expenses. I cut out movies and going out, but kept the subscription because as we have had people point out numerous times - even if I only play those 4 - 5 hours, I have gotten my money's worth out of the game in comparison to the costs of alternate forms of entertainment.
Plus I can't be bothered to go into my account to shut off billing, since there's always the chance that I may decide to spend an evening playing.
And I still get to post here.
Fifteen dollars gets me access to occasional entertainment should the mood strike me, in-game, and certainly here in the forums.
Another change to my situation is that now that I am back to work, I spend less time in-game. Typically, I may be on an hour or so on a weekday evening or a Satuday/Sunday afternoon. Highly unlikely that I would run into many Oceanic players at those times as their playtimes run about opposite mine - so our subscriptions (mine vs. the Oceanic player's) will not be concurrent online. Even gamers have to sleep sometimes. I think you may be adding in a factor to take this into consideration, but I'm not sure. -
Quote:Well, at level 8, lots of the powers seem to take forever to recharge. It's because you're a lowbie. It was more the speed of the fights then anything else. I'm only level 8, and none of the secondary Psychic powers have very short cooldowns. So I seem to spend a lot of time just sitting there.
It gets faster, though.
That being said, Defenders do solo a bit slower in general (don't yell at me, defender fans, I have several of them myself) because their attack powers are in their secondary powerset. Controllers also solo a bit slower at lower levels because their powers are more about control than they are about damage. Blasters deal loads of damage, but staying alive can be a challenge (slowing down your levelling) - maybe not so much for an experienced computer gamer.
So far, I see that no one else has mentioned is that you will soon be able to create a character that starts out as a villain and then reforms (by purchasing the upcoming Going Rogue expansion) - so if you see a Dominator or Corruptor set of powers that fits better, you can use that option to recreate your character. -
Just look at all the pretty pictures!
I really have nothing else to add except "welcome to IOs, ioshie!"
I just wanted to say "IOs, ioshie" because it sounded kinda poetic. -
This is another soda thru the nose phrase, isn't it? Plus it's a tongue twister - go on, try to say it three times very fast.
Quote:I find it funny that some folks are complaining about being expected to show manners in a game. Yeah, it's a game. It's a virtual experience that doesn't do anything to directly improve the real world, so it doesn't matter....
Except it does. This isn't just a game. It's an MMO, a social setting, where there are multiple people interacting with each other. It also indirectly affects the real world in that a positive or negative experience can affect a person's mood, which can result in various effects to other people outside of the game.
Single Player games are the type of situation where you can do whatever you want, because when you are done, only you are affected by your actions. Being inside an MMO world is kinda like being inside a Dance Club. You pay your cover charge, you go in, you have a good time interacting with other people who have payed their cover charge. If you do annoying things, you'll get called out on it, and if you are offensive enough, you can be asked to leave (in the game, a temporary suspension) and even banned from entering ever again. While this may not be intentionally rude behavior, it can still bother people and being polite is key to any social interaction. You wouldn't go screaming through a library, because it would upset people trying to study, would you?
You can't escape rules and regulations in an MMO. If you want to do whatever you want, just so you can relax, without rules and regulations, go play Super Mario Bros. If you choose to play in an MMO, accept that you have to take other folks into consideration. -
Sounds like you inadvertantly stepped in the spawning of the mass of Clockwork that bring about a Paladin.
Though I thought those were higher level than something that would con gray to a level 11 Tanker. -
I can be there.
I'm bringing either Agoniste, a level 39 Fire/Rad Troller (if we need the debuffs) or Brighid Frost, a level 41 Fire/Ice/Electric Blaster, to bring the pain.
Brighid doesn't have the badge, but Agoniste could use the XP, so either would be fine. -
Quote:No really - tell us how you really feel, BillZ.All names are changed to @global - character name
EDIT: Which would suck, be dumb, break immersion, be distasteful, be annoying and generally be a rotten idea. Did I mention I'd hate this option?
I agree with you.
But isn't that "changing the naming system"? At least how they display? -
Quote:Frosticus - just curious, but what third option would you see? It's a fact that there are lots of duplicated names on different servers. In order to accommodate that, either someones name has to change or the naming scheme itself has to change. EITHER of those methods would cause SOMEONE to quit. It's just a question of how many and would the benefits outweigh the costs.

I can't offer anything for a stove, sorry.
For a refrigerator, I use white wall cabinets (the short ones of 2 cabinets side-by-side) stacked out from the wall two-deep (using the cubicle wall method to float them out forom the wall). Setting one set on top of another makes what looks kinda like a side-by-side refrigerator.
Here's a picture to show what I am clumsily describing:
Kitchen - Paragon Arcanum
I have also seen folks use stacked floor safes (turn them around so the doors face the wall). They use one of the single wall cables to make a handle. -
Quote:I'm not clear what the "problem" might be of relying on global channels to get teams going?I have to agree with those that feel like too many of the smaller servers are too empty. I know I moved my two mains from Liberty, a moderatley populated server, because even then I felt like there wasn't enough going on. Sure, I could use LB or other global channels for Liberty to find teams, but honestly, I feel like one shouldn't have to entirley rely on global channels to find a team.
I probably would have left CoH if I hadn't moved my characters to Freedom. Despite its reputation and getting the nickname 'Freedumb' I still find it heaps more enjoyable than struggling to get a TF going on Liberty.
What other methods would you rely on instead?
Broadcast "lft"? But you can do that on the global and your message hits all zones/both factions. To me, using the global to hit all the zones in the game, including inside instances at once, is actually the easier way to broadcast.
Send /tells? That skips the whole broadcast step, but you can do that now whether or not you have the globals activated.
The only team recruitment method I can see as different between a busy server and having to "rely" on globals on one of the lower pop servers isthat on Freedom or Virtue, you can possibly run up to total strangers standing around under Atlas or in the marketplace or Pocket D or wherever players are gathering and ask them face-to-face in Local.
And I have to say my experiences on Liberty don't match yours. I have never seen a TF take more than 5-10 minutes to recruit a team (granted that's using one of the global channels you decry having to use).
There's a triple whammy going on here right now on the Live servers. It's right before a major release, so some folks are taking a break waiting for the release. It's summertime - many people go on vacation and not surprisingly don't take their computers along to play their MMO. Afinally, as some others have said, we know that a Closed Beta (for that upcoming major release) is going on right now. I imagine that many of the people who would otherwise be playing on the Live servers are caught up in that CB. -

<this un-lurking is difficult to maintain coherent thoughts in>
edited for color the purple is difficult to read
Pro tip: Use Yellow Orange, and Pale Green are pretty high contrast on both the blue of hero-skin and the red of villain-skin.
Consider your audience before using color for emphasis and effect. -
Quote:^^^I have one rule: Everyone Fights.
Other than that I feel no need to act like a dictator and tell people what to do. I assume that you are a competent sensible player until proven otherwise and that I don't need to tell you how to play. If you're playing poorly and it's hurting the team then I will discuss it with you but otherwise as long as you're helping out and the team isn't struggling I'm not that bothered.
On TFs I will occasionally provide guidance as to what needs to be done in any situation where tactics more complicated than "get 'em" are needed but for the most part I find that simply pointing the team in the general direction of something they can kill and leaving them to it works just fine.
This.
If I join a team with a leader who wants to manage the team in more detail than this, I will finish the mission (unless the leader is a real prat tinpot dictator) before quitting the team. -
Do you want to PL him so you can team?
With Super Side-Kicking, you can team effectively even if you aren't close in levels. They also removed most of the "level gates" to hazard zones, making a large majority of the content available to him as your sidekick.
OTOH, if the aim is just to get him to be HL, the others have aleady given you the answer. -
I will be there with either a blaster or a Rad defender or troller.
I need to see which of four possibles need the TF. -
Quote:When you go to the Trainer at level 10, he/she will try to tell you about a "Second Build". It opens up at level 10.I just realized that. My level 10 tank is running out of stamina pretty fast.
Just wondering, is there a way to repick powers later?
This is a chance to make a second version of this same character, which you can use to make different choices in the same 2 Powersets (for example, choosing attacks over armors). Both versions are the same character, just built with different emphasis. It takes you back to level 1, then you go thru each level choosing powers and pacing enhancement slots.
If you skipped right thru that part when you trained, you can go back to the Trainer at any time to switch between the 2 builds.
The only drawback is that you cannot use the enhancements slotted on one build for the other build (meaning you may have to buy double the enhancements).
Using a second build costs you no Influence (other than buying double enhancements), so it's a good way to determine what works best for you within the same 2 powersets.
Welcome to the City! -
OK - gonna chime in here.
This is my only MMO, and I have never played any FPS games at all. Before City, my game of choice was either something from the arcade games on MSN or Heroes of Might & Magic (not Might & Magic), which is turn-based. Also, never played any console games because I was just a bit too old for the Atari 2600, it belonged to my younger sibs (I was way to sophisticated to play it, besides, I'm a girl and arcade games were a "boy" thing - stereotyped, I know, but that was how it was in small-town West Virginia).
So I developed my own system of moving, etc., which is no doubt very inefficient, but I have tried others and can't really "get" them.
I use a laptop, sometimes with a second keyboard. If I am using the second keyboard, it's on the keyboard tray under the laptop. Movement is on the second keyboard with the left hand, using the arrow keys. Attacks are activated using the mouse pointing to the icons. Jump uses the right hand, moved from the mouse to the laptop keyboard.
If I'm using just the laptop, I still use the arrow keys, but it's a bit more uncomfortable because I have to move my left hand up to the laptop keyboard.
Many people have tried to teach me other methods, but I always come back to this one. -
It's not even that much of a pain with only one other player/member. Of course, it also helps if both those players are altoholics and have a full roster of characters to put into the SG and then play for the Prestige.

You may want to post this up in the Tech Issues and Bugs forum - that's where the tech-heads hang out.
-
I have helped players add alts to SGs/VGs by making a throwaway character on an unused server.
Did you ask for a volunteer to assist you here in this forum? If so, shame on us (basebuilders) for not helping you out for free. -

Have you joined one of the global channels for Infinity? You can usually get the last member or two for a TF or Trial by broadcasting on a global - sometimes more volunteers than you need.
I'm on globals for a few servers, so I forget what the best ones for Infinity are when I'm not in-game, but I'm sure someone else will chime in shortly with the best one to join. -
"Question?"
"It's an interrogatory, usually requiring an answer, but that's not important right now."
Sorry, the thread title made me flash back to Peter Graves (or was it Lloyd Bridges?).
Carry on....
