    GM Can't see me

    [ QUOTE ]
I still think those chat options should be defaulted to on... or off... they seem to be really inconsistant on which ones are "Enable to allow messages" and "disable to stop hiding messages"... -.-

And every time they put in a double-negative option, I threw a fit in beta. No change. You want to really go nuts? Look at the save/load buttons for the options. Sometimes save is on the right, sometimes it's on the left!

I wish I had a special version of the Propel power that shot out a Windows User Experience Guide.
  2. This sounds familiar but I can't remember how to fix the problem. Try turning SLI off first to see if that helps. If that doesn't work, start a ticket with support via the website. (Just go to www.coh.com and follow the links.)
  3. City of Heroes is pretty picky about it's timings. Satelite users run into this problem a lot. When web surfing, the system will just wait for the connection to get itself figured out over a slow internet. City of Heroes will bail out.

@Zombie - Do you mean the automatic updates for XP? If so, I haven't been able to download the updates. I'm not sure why. It starts to archive the files and after about 15 minutes it says that the updates could not be installed.

!!! Has this been going on for a long time? Maybe your hard drive has filled up or something...

!!!!!! You don't have any hard drives! And yet Windows is booting off your C drive? Oh my, this is serious. You can't have booted up and thus you can't be posting here. Therefore you must be hallucinating this whole thing. Call your doctor and tell him/her what has been happening. I'll call mine and tell him I've been hallucinating that I've been answering you. Hopefully they can work out what's wrong with us.
  5. Would they put Windows 7 out as a release candidate right when they are pushing Vista SP2 out? SP2 has got to be mighty close. Heck, I just downloaded an 'installation helper' as an 'important' update.

I wonder what we should do with this topic once it comes out? The past 20 pages are going to be mostly irrelevant.

Amazing that W7 is moving along so fast. Somebody needs to get a warrant to search Microsoft's campus to look for whips. After Windows 7 is released, of course.
  6. Are you sure the firewall isn't turned on? They can be sneaky about stuff like that. Also, have you done a virus check recently?

I doubt its anything on your end. My computer has had the exact same issues that just started after I14, game worked flawlessly before that.

Something in I14 is causing these problems and they need to fix it.

<sigh> Every time we get an update, somebody comes to this conclusion. Nevermind the fact that 80,000 people are playing just fine, if it happened about the time an issue came out, it MUST be the issue's fault. We've even had people claim that the pre-update download is causing their problems!
  8. I don't think your video card pulls very much power until it actually starts using it, like when playing a game. If your PC is freaking out before it even gets booted up, it's probably not the video card's fault (unless it has a short circuit or something).

As for what's really going on in there, it's hard to say. Do you still have your old video card and power supply? Could you try putting them back?
  9. ?? I thought the 9800 was about one year old? Yep, Wikipedia says it was released April 1, 2008, so it's just 13 months old. The GTX250 is pretty much the same thing, though it should use less power to run.

Though honestly, the 8800s are pretty good cards, too. Unless you are willing to spend more like $200, I wouldn't expect a big difference. Or maybe ATI made a big breakthrough? Have you seen the stats on this card compared to your current video card?
  10. This is most likely a case of an ATI graphics card trying to use Anti-aliasing along with advanced effects.
  11. Use the Force, Brian!

Have you got the -compatiblecursors flag set in your shortcut? If so, turn it off. If not, turn it on. (Though this 'long series of crashes' sounds pretty ominous.)
  12. You might try getting more up to date sound drivers. Creative updates them fairly often. Also, unless you use Steam every day, set it so it doesn't start every time. (Open up Steam, look under view, select Settings, go to the Interface tab, and clear the checkbox toward the bottom.)
  13. Really? That's very interesting. I would have thought that 11 had all the latest for 9 and... HEY! You have Vista SP2 already? Oh man!! I want my service pack!
  14. Errr, I don't think you can point it except when you first install the game. The only other way to "point" it is to get into the Windows registry.

Have you heard back from support yet?
  15. CoH doesn't work very well with dual-anything-video. It CAN work but, honestly, I wouldn't push it. Honestly, I haven't been real impressed with dual cards in any game system. They just don't seem to help enough to be worth the extra hassel or cash. It's getting better but I think I would still rather spend that extra money on a different component.

Regarding the graphics settings - let's see, you can get an nVidia card that works with all the options or you can get an ATI card that works with some of the options. Seems an easy choice to me.
  16. No, it's supposed to work all the time. However, if it goes down, it's a pretty low priority thing. It will probably get rebooted on Monday sometime. (Anyway, there IS something going on - there's a new test version out right now.)
  17. <shrug> It's Windows 7. nVidia is fooling around with the drivers quite a bit trying to get them working right.
  18. Yep, the trainer is the person who you train at.

The dual builds thing is a neat feature, actually. It's one of the many options at the trainer. You can switch between builds once every 15 minutes, I think. The link gives you a lot more details.
  19. It's not a problem with your machine, it's probably what your machine is doing. SOMETHING else is running. A virus scanner, a backup program, some nasty malware, Boinc... something. The HiJack will tell us what's running on your system. See the 'common solutions' thread for where to get it.
  20. ?? That shouldn't have happened. There are no permissions to get, as far as I know this isn't something ever done on purpose.

Wait a second - did you accidentally switch builds? Go to the trainer and check to see if you can switch. You shouldn't be able to do that until level 10 but it's my best guess.

    Vista Issue....

Seriously? Jeez, that's nasty. SP1 took something like half an hour with its three reboots.

    Vista Issue....

That's weird, it looks like your sound devices have been doubled. You might need to uninstall them completely in the Device Manager then reboot and let Windows rediscover them. It thinks you have two monitors, too, but that might well be true.

The BIG thing you are missing is Vista SP1. Not having that is like begging hackers to destroy your system. And if that hasn't been refreshed, heaven only knows how many other important updates you've skipped. Your video drivers are also badly out of date and the sound drivers look like they have never been updated at all. You need to spend some serious time updating. Turn automatic updates on and let Vista update whatever it wants. Then go to ATIs website and get the latest video driver. Then go hunt down the latest for your sound.

(You could save some time with Vista SP1 by waiting for SP2, which should be out in a few days. I really wouldn't suggest it, though.)
  23. Great guns - that says something right there. Your PC is doing something else besides running the Helper (or playing the game) if it's timing out. Maybe we should skip right over to the HiJackThis log? (See the "common solutions" sticky topic at the top of this forum for what that is.)

Or heck, just open Task Manager (control-shift-escape), switch to the Processes tab, then sort by CPU.
  24. Well, what you want to do first is delete the coh.checksum file. But... if you can barely navigate around in the file system, I'm going to have to spend half an hour just describing how to do that.

Wait a sec, maybe there's a shortcut! Literally! Right click on the shortcut on your desktop that you use to play the game and select properties. There should be a button about 2/3rds of the way down that says something along the lines of "Open File Location". Click that and you should be taken right to the folder with the game in it. Somewhere in there you'll see a file called "Coh.Checksum". Delete that file. The game will download it again and try again.

(I'm assuming you have a PC and not a Macintosh.)
  25. I think NCSoft is trying to make sure what you get is what you expect. I can take any program, call it a new patch for City of Heroes, and put it on BitTorrent. Still, this is the only game I know that doesn't have some official mirrors to download from. Even if NCSoft's download server has a monster-sized pipe to the internet, it's not going to matter if there's a bottleneck somewhere between them and their customers.
