Random PC shutdowns

BayBlast

I recently purchased this power supply and this video card and I also bought 2 gigs of RAM.

For the first week or so I was able to play all day and nothing would shut down, but afterwards my pc just shuts down after playing for a couple hours and it just kept getting worse and worse each time. And when I tried to boot back up, my pc wouldn't start any programs or anything. It would just be on and the screen would show nothing.

A couple of my friends say I need a new motherboard and a new processor, but I thought I would come here before I went out and spent more money than needed.

Not exactly sure on what information you need to help so yeah..

I don't think your video card pulls very much power until it actually starts using it, like when playing a game. If your PC is freaking out before it even gets booted up, it's probably not the video card's fault (unless it has a short circuit or something).

As for what's really going on in there, it's hard to say. Do you still have your old video card and power supply? Could you try putting them back?

Posted

@Zombie - I downloaded the CoH Helper and I wasn't sure on how to use it.

@Zloth - I gave my old power supply to a friend so I wouldn't be able to try that.

After reading the specs on that powersupply and the troubles your having I would guess that the powersupply has failed ( amps on the 12+v rail was kinda low). It is however only a guess. We really need the info from the CoH helper tool in order to get the full stats of your system before we can help any further. You could try using your old vid card or try leaving all non essential components unplugged such as cd / dvd drives or extra hard drives. See if it helps. If so then the powersupply is the issue.

Well so far so good. Was your previous card Nvidia or ATI and if Nvidia did you use a driver cleaner before installing the new card? I know all these tools are getting old, but try running this ( who crashed ) and post the resaults.

My old card was an ATI X1300.

@Zombie - Do you mean the automatic updates for XP? If so, I haven't been able to download the updates. I'm not sure why. It starts to archive the files and after about 15 minutes it says that the updates could not be installed.

Edit - Nevermind. My firewall was blocking it. Updating system now.

!!! Has this been going on for a long time? Maybe your hard drive has filled up or something...

!!!!!! You don't have any hard drives! And yet Windows is booting off your C drive? Oh my, this is serious. You can't have booted up and thus you can't be posting here. Therefore you must be hallucinating this whole thing. Call your doctor and tell him/her what has been happening. I'll call mine and tell him I've been hallucinating that I've been answering you. Hopefully they can work out what's wrong with us.

Er, unless you changed this yourself, it looks like something is messing with your system?

Or maybe I'm hallucinating too...

I noticed that too. I'm a little bit confused as to why it's like that. =/

Also the WhoCrashed program doesn't work because my system shut down while I was trying to update XP and it doesn't show up. he only crashes it shows are from 2007.

In that case something is seriously bjorked on your system, maybe from malware or maybe from something else. Try running an online scan from here.

[Edit]
This looks like the specs for your system. If so, you've done a lot of upgrading.

I'm now thinking it is heat damage to your power supply, motherboard or other internals. Looking at the motherboard specs show it to be a micro ATX, so the case is probably a micro ATX. The 4850 tends to get up to 90°C/194°F during gaming.

If you are indeed running that card in a micro ATX case, I would be surprised if you had enough airflow to keep your components from frying.

I would have to agree with the heat assesment. Have you tried running your pc with the side of thes case open and a fan blowing on it? That should give you a good idea if it is a heat issue.

I also purchased a small fan when I bought the card, ram, and power supply and I hung it to the inside of my case blowing outwards through the side vent. When I looked at it the other day, it looks like it isn't going as fast as it should. Would it be because its a couple inches away from the motherboard fan and that the mb fan is I guess canceling out the other fan?

A good move on purchasing the fan. It should however point the otherway and pull cooler air into the case so as to help force the hot air out via the powersupllys fans.

All the same try running the computer without the side and or with a fan blowing on it....... that will tell you if it is indeed a heat issue.

Ah okay. My friend told me to have it point outward to pull the hot air out, but I'll try it without the side or just flip it around because I don't have an available fan to blow into it.

For proper cooling you need adequate airflow, and that can be a tricky thing. A fan's effectiveness is best rated by it's CFM rating (cubic feet per minute). The other consideration is whether the orientation of the fans are configured for negative or positive pressure.

Negative pressure would be say 80 cfm total directed out and 60 cfm total directed in, while positive pressure would be the opposite. Personally, I use negative pressure at around 70 out/40 in, but your configuration would need far more than that.

Odds are you be left with doing just as Doublehelix suggested and pull the hot air out. If you do, I would try to use a 'cylone' design like this one.

A good utility you can try for seeing what your internal temperatures are is Speedfan http://www.almico.com/speedfan.php

This will let you access your computer's thermal sensors and even control your fan speeds based on temperature. It helped me solve some airflow problems I had with my system.

Give it a try. Post your temperature results (system, processor core, hard drive) here and maybe you can get some more targeted advice.

I was able to play for over an hour with my case open and fan blowing into it. I think that might've been the problem. I'll try playing tomorrow with the case closed and fan blowing inward and see how that fares.

That is great to hear. Sounds like we have the problem nailed down....... Now we have it fix it. In most computer cases you are able to mount a fan in the bottom front of the case. See if you have a fan there and if so is it working?
If it is not or there is just an empty space or bracket, I would highly sugest getting a fan for it. Make sure that the fan is pulling air into the case so you get proper airflow thru the system. There are several makes of fans out there. some have three pin connectors for your motherboard, and there are some that have a 4 pin molex connector that can plug directly off you powersupply. Get the one that you can use.

There is no room in my case for a fan in the front. I currently have it mounted on the side where the vents are and it seems to be working better since I turned it around. I'm not really going to worry about the fan issue too much because I'm going to buy this beautiful case in a week or so. =]

I also need to get a new mb because I'm buying a new processor and my current one doesn't support it. Thing is, I have no idea where to begin on mb's.
