Internet port question.

I play on satellite for the most part, but I have a ton of latency. So a couple of times a week, I go over to my parents' place to play on their DSL line. But I've run into a snag. Last week everything was fine. Now, I can connect to CoH, but not the internet. When I ran a diagnostic check, I get a message like this:

There is a problem with your connection. HTTP port 80 HTTPS 443 FTP 21 are suspect.
There may also be a problem with the firewall settings on your computer. ((Which is not on anyway.))

Anyone got any ideas?

Are you sure the firewall isn't turned on? They can be sneaky about stuff like that. Also, have you done a virus check recently?

Well, the only firewall I have on my comp is the Windows one, and I just did an AVG scan earlier today. I'm at a loss.

COX uses ip adresses to get around, if you use actual ip addresses to reach regular websites you just may get there..

Try CNN - http://157.166.226.25/

and Google - http://74.125.45.100/

If you use the above IP's and get there, you have an issue with DNS servers or your local systems HOSTS file.

If the ip's work, you need to post a hijackthis report, and I suggest you try to get a copy of malewarebytes http://www.malwarebytes.org/ installed via cdrom or usb jumpdrive on the troubled system and let it work it's magic.

Thanks, I'll give it a shot.

Okay, quick question: How can my mom use her internet sitting beside me on her desktop, and I can't connect with mine? I can still get to CoH, but not the net. Granted, this happened this past Saturday, and even she was having some trouble connecting to the net. Her comp is older than mine, and not as good, so I'm just curious.

City of Heroes is pretty picky about it's timings. Satelite users run into this problem a lot. When web surfing, the system will just wait for the connection to get itself figured out over a slow internet. City of Heroes will bail out.

Do you have proxy settings while conneted to Sat? Its quite common for Sat providers to use a proxy to reduce the bandwidth use.

A proxy would make sense while you were at your parents using DSL that the game would work but not the web browser etc.

I'm not sure, Hugginator. I just unplug my desktop from my satellite router, drive over to mom's and plug into her Verizon DSL box.

In Firefox you can check for proxy settings under
Tools/Options/Advanced/Connection/Settings, you 'should' have No proxy set.

In IE its Tools/Internet Options/Connections/Lan Settings and the same no checkbox for Proxy Servers.

Oh, I see. I'll check in the morning when I get home. Thanks.

Well, I checked my settings, and I don't have proxy settings checked, but I do have Use Automatic Configuration Script checked, and the default address is:

http://wpad.wildblue.com/wpad.dat

Any other ideas that might explain my problem?

Posted

Thats an automatic proxy, so I would try turning that off as a test while connected to the DSL.

So the next time I'm over there, would I check the second box in the proxy settings area?

Posted

Hmm...

I did a quick test by putting that wpad.wildblue etc in my automatic configuration script area and it didn't block my internet so a proxy setting is not the problem.

Next I would try PING, and I would try Firefox as a couple of examples to see what is and isn't working there.

What's PING? And I don't know anything about Firefox. I'm at a loss as for what could be wrong.

PING is a tool to merely test a connection.

You can ping most anything on the internet via the command line, so you open a Command window via Start/Run/type CMD click OK
then you type in the black window (caps don't matter)

PING www.google.com

And you may get some results similar to this:

Reply from 74.125.45.100: bytes=32 time=95ms TTL=242

OR this:

Request timed out.

1 tells us you have connect to a regular place on the web, the 2nd says you don't.

I expect ping to work.

Firefox is an alternate web browser that will bypass any IE problems you may be having, its just a quick way to see if you have something embedded in your IE that could be blocking your access to the web from the DSL.

get it from http://www.mozilla.com

Lots of other possibilities but its 2 quick things to check.

I appreciate it. I'll do it next time I'm over at my mom's.
