Crashing at Character Selection Screen

Hello, I'm returning to the game from a long hiatus (over a year!) and after installing the game I found that my CoH program crashes after selecting a server that has characters of mine on it. I am able to get to the character selection screen of a server that doesn't have any of my characters on it, but not either of the servers that do. I am also able to go through the character creation ritual, name my character and click on the finish/create and it will crash (as I assume it goes to the character selection screen at that point, it seems to be the same issue).

I reinstalled the game, using the online download option.
I "Verified All Files".
I tried starting the game in the safe mode option.
I updated my video card drivers.
I ran a defrag on the HDD the game is on.
Nothing has changed... =(

My computer specs are:
Windows XP
2x GeForce 8800 GT 512MB 256-bit GDDR3 PCI 2.0 x16 video cards (SLI'ed)
2.3Ghz Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600 processor
3.0G of G.Skill DDR2 SDRAM (2 gig sticks and 2 halves)
ABS Tagan ITZ800-V2 800W PSU
ASUS P5N-D LGA 775 NVIDIA nForce 750i SLI ATX Intel Motherboard

I've had this PC for almost a year, played quite a lot of games on it and I this is the first issue I've had. If you have any suggestions or need more information, please let me know. I've spent a while digging through google trying to find an answer and I'm afraid I can't find anyone with a similar issue.

Thanks in advance! =D

This sounds familiar but I can't remember how to fix the problem. Try turning SLI off first to see if that helps. If that doesn't work, start a ticket with support via the website. (Just go to www.coh.com and follow the links.)

Let's say your login name is 'SupaPlayer' and CoH is in the directory C:/Programs/City of Heroes.

Go to C:/Programs/City of Heroes/SupaPlayer/ and delete the file playerslot.txt if it exists and see if that fixes it.

If that file doesn't exist, then I don't know what's the problem and it would be best to contact Customer Support.

I tried disabling SLI, same issue. I also don't have a folder for any characters or that file name anywhere.

I'll get with support and put in a ticket. I'll let everyone know what happens. Thanks again for trying!

Found the issue on the support boards... I feel foolish for not digging deeper there...

For Nvidia cards that use dual monitors(or more), there's a quick fix for this issue:

1. Open the NVIDIA Control Panel (right-click on any area of the desktop, then click on "NVIDIA Control Panel"

2. Under "3D Settings" click "Manage 3D Settings"

3. Under "Global Settings" find the option titled "Multi-display/Mixed GPU acceleration" (you'll see this entire segment in the middle of the screen)

4. Set that option to "Single Display Performance Mode"

5. Click "Apply" (lower right corner of the Nvidia Control Panel)

6. Re-launch the game client

7. Enjoy the friggin game.

Thanks all!
