Game download ridiculously slow
This happens during events and other times of high-traffic - double xp, anniversary, etc since everybody has to download the patch from a single server.

I was not going to mention that other patcher but it's apparent where the superior technology is here.
Thanks CoH for inviting me to play even though I can't get your game fast enough to play.
I think NCSoft is trying to make sure what you get is what you expect. I can take any program, call it a new patch for City of Heroes, and put it on BitTorrent. Still, this is the only game I know that doesn't have some official mirrors to download from. Even if NCSoft's download server has a monster-sized pipe to the internet, it's not going to matter if there's a bottleneck somewhere between them and their customers.
Once more from the top.
You can try changing what port the game updater is using to connect to the update servers. The default port happens to fall into the default range that many bittorrent clients use and who knows if some switch between you and the update servers are shaping traffic in that port range.
This article from the PlayNC support area shows you how to change the port. You can stop the updater at any time, it is smart enough to pick up where it left off.

6 and a half hours to update this? You have to be kidding. I'm on a high-speed cable connection and the download didn't get above 140k a second.
Also, what's with the amateur message board design from the 90's?

Did you even bother to try the above link from FatherXmas, or were you too busy complaining?
The majority of players get their downloads in a timely manner. This means that more than likely, your download problems are due to problems either between your ISP and CoX, or on your end.

Let's try a little math shall we.
The vast bulk of the game is saved in the PIGGS folder, these files are already compressed to a substantial degree.
Currently the PIGGS folder is about 2,992,003 KB in size.
At 140KB/s that would be about 20,772 seconds or around 5 hours and 48 minutes.
Seems to me that 6 and a half hours isn't that much out of line with your reported connection speed.
Feel free to come back and ask any other questions.

I understand that all these games are ridiculously large - which is why they tend to be distributed on dvd's and when there are downloads, they are usually bit-torrented or run from several mirror sites.
My issue is that the download speed seems to capped at a low enough level that people like me who want to do the 14 day trial are facing 6 hours minimum of downloading to do so.
I've opened the right ports in my firewall and I don't experience slow download speeds like this in general so after checking all the tech advice here it seems my problem comes down to capped download rates.
I download upwards of 200kb/s when patching or installing fresh, so download rate cap on City of Heroes' end is not the problem.

hell I have a slow connection compared to you lot and I still get it in just a couple of hours.

[/ QUOTE ]Yeah, until one of the seeders has an infected system that causes a corrupted system file on your end and requires a complete reinstall of Windows. And yes, it does happen, I downloaded the trial of that game and ended up having to use my laptop's restore disk.

Oops, sorry. I thought your 140KB/s was your normal rate.

Just for numbers sake, I tested using Speeguide.net/hostkitty.net and got a download speed of 15586 kbps down (~15.59 Mbps, 1903 KB/s)
Now, I run a gutted Co* install, no piggs whatsoever, basically just the updater and it says I'll have to wait 1.75 hours to get 2.7G at around 570K/sec, give or take 12K/sec.
I dunno what that means except that I have teh AWESOME cable modem and that's about all I got. It also appears that, unless I'm totally reading things wrong (and it's kinda likely) that even though I *could* get 1903K/s, I'm only allowed 1/4 that from the game hosting server.
So... I dunno what else to say about it, but I'm being stifled by NCSoft. *shakes fist*
/sorry if that sounded like I wuz rubbin' it in... I mean no harm... but I loves me mah Comcast in Houston.
//it settled down to about 470K/sec now and 1.5 hours to go.
///then I canceled it and restarted and it's around 22M downloaded, 1:50 to go, 433K/sec.
////bounces around a little, doesn't it.?

Few people understand that everyone is at the mercy of the slowest link between them and the site they are downloading from, it could easily be 20 hops from the OP to the game download location and for all he knows hop 11 is the slow one.
Ever since fast broadband connections became common its been rare that the endpoint was the bottleneck, its most likely somewhere out there on the intarwebs, and its also possible that the ISP is throttling.
I also get near 500K/sec downloads for this game most of the time.
Well, yeah, I grok that. Perhaps a pingplotter to the server where the files are hosted might be in order to find the spikey server causing the hiccups. Anyone know the IP address?
/I'm a little lazy... it's late or I'd go look it up somehow.
//Probably with with a network tracing utility I have, watch the packets.

The final connection to the updaters is through a Limelight Network server, Limelight does practice throttling and handles a lot of financial transactions which of course have higher priority than our traffic.
I checked again right now, and some are through LAX (the airport) and some through Limelight.

Hi, I started playing CoH a month after it came out and I stopped playing about 2-3 years ago and now I'm coming back for a short time. Now I am installing it from scratch and I have the original installation discs and installed fine but when I go into the updater and wait awhile it says it's going at 5k/sec and gets lower and the time remaining says it needs 3.1G to finish, and 250 hours till completion. I reset the router a few times, made sure no anti virus, download programs, etc. are off and reset the computer and it won't go faster. Anyone got an idea on how to fix this?
Hey folks, please create a new thread if you are experiencing issues like this. Digging up a year and a half old thread to reply to just confuses issues because if we don't pay attention we can conflate issues that are possibly unrelated.
Thanks,

I came back for the anniversary to check out the new mission creator but I can't get above 40K/s on my download of the game using the CoHUpdater.
Whenever I've downloaded the game in the past I'd get my regular 1.8MB/s but for some reason now it's really really slow.
What's the point of checking things out if I can't get into the game? You really need to change the way you deliver the game and patches.
