  1. As said before, buying influence with real money is against the EULA and is very perma-bannable. So when you talk about "whipping out a credit card" to buy influence, that's what I think. There are many reasons why doing this is bad, including that shady overseas businesses now have your credit card information.

Trading influence you acquired in-game for prestige is acceptable, although the exchange rate is not great.

However, my biggest question is... why do you need to be #1?

    Bad Mouthing CoH

I just thought out how to use the reduced xp for boss-only custom critter groups to my advantage!

My evil-evil plan is to include glowie traps in the mission. Players will be warned in the mission briefing, and the glowies will be non-required, and the text when activating will say "It's a Trap! Get away!" or some such. If completed, the glowie will summon a nasty ambush, which I can now arrange to have REDUCED XP on by making them all Custom Critters Bosses!

    Bwa ha ha ha!

Yes, you should read mission descriptions!

This "defeat x" was much less prominent with City of Villains, and also with newly added or revised content, Faultline, for example.

Ask for help in the help channel (/hc Where do I find Outcasts in Steel Canyon?)

Or ask team members or SG members for guidence. The expanded mission text often contains clues.

    On Enhancements:

The level 20 with no enhancements... did he know they exist, and was saving his cash for level 22 SOs/IOs or level 30 or 35 IOs?

    Or was he challenging himself?

I had a friend who decided to slot nothing at all, not even drops, so he could build a cash reserve to splurge on IOs at some high level.

    On Power Choices:

I've often taken powers that I KNEW were not popular or of questionable tactical or DPS value (Call of the Wolf) because I thought they were cool. I don't play for maximum efficiency. I play for maximum fun!

This guy may be more impressed with the "neato!" factor of Whirlwind than any DPS/DPE ratios.

When you meet folks like this, you have the chance to share a bit of your knowledge and experience, but, while do so, don't smack their sense of wonder and excitement.

    On Levels 1-20

I realize some people do not enjoy 1-20 through regular content, but I do.

I did xp farms for a villain for his 5-20.

Although my levels per hour were probably the highest I've done, my fun per hour was below average. So, not my thing.

1-20 is an enjoyable experience for me.

I think Catboys refers to Bobcat's followers, who have cat-like names, and who, IIRC, are all male.

I've gone through a few arcs specifically designed for low level characters.

"HappyCorpse" and "One Hell of a Deal" were for levels 1-10 and they were pretty darn interesting.

I don't think MA should be restricted by level, as a level 1 is currently capable of participating, enjoying, and creating content for it.

I second that the changes in I16 will reduce the incidence of PL'ed noobs, as dedicated farmers won't need fillers to get large spawns.

The xp filter on custom critter group composition might reduce exploitative farming maps.

The supersidekick system will should remove bridging.

I think that PL'ed noobs are self-filtering. Either they:

    1) figure things out and become competent teammates, with or without help
    2) or they get bored/frustrated/blacklisted and leave.

Anyone else that have had problems with finding him?
    Yeah, he's shy.

The only time me and my team tried to spawn Caleb, he spawned WAY UP HIGH, and may have some stealth on him or something.
  13. Once or twice, when I've gotten these requests on a higher level character, I've sidekicked up the lowbie, and jumped into a mission with them.

They earn some money, maybe get some nice drops, and gives me an opportunity to teach the newblood some tactical lessons.

If they do well, they get a bonus.

This approach presumes patience, and especially time. Which some of us don't have much to spare.
  14. Hate the little buggers.

Overall, I think it's a survival question. We didn't intend to hurt the Red Caps, but they roll in, screwing up the dimensional barriers, threatening to fold a whole damn town into $deity knows what, so they can get their giggles.

I'd prefer to negotiate. However, they don't seem to be interested in a mutually beneficial settlement with minimal harm to all. So they get their skulls caved in.
  15. Zero issues with Vista install.

I got a black screen in CoH after an Nvidia driver update, so rolled 'em back, and fine so far.

Are the August 13 Nvidia drivers okay?

The major issue is that a "family" computer may not have the graphics/memory/cpu horsepower to play this game well. Most computers will have "integrated graphics solutions" or some such, which means fine for word processing, email, and internet, but can be lacking for graphic intensive games, like this one.

    What are the system specs?

To the OP: What server, what archetype?

Also, teams are not a rarity. Although if you really want one, you should probably start your own.

    pvp server

Right now, the PvP population is low.

Making additional zones PvP, with new features, may attract more people.

The trade-off is that by adding additional PvP zones, the population will be spread out more.
  18. Any real company willing to put it's logo on costumes is going to have to risk one of the game players having an ax to grind.

    So, probably never.

From what the OP said it's entirely possible that what happened went down in a less than hostile manner and his friend just needs to lighten up a bit about "The Gays". Victory is indeed the unofficial gay server, the number of GLBT SGs should tell you that. Q Patrol hosts the annual Q Pride Prom on Victory every year, last year it was an event that turned out so many people we spawned Pocket D 2 and Ghost Widow made a personal appearance along with Lighthouse. Anyway, as I read the first post I take from it that someone could have said to him when he questioned one of the more obvious toons running about (There are a myriad of rainbow costumes and names like Sizequeen and the aforementioned Nova Gina) that someone told him "Yeah, Victory is the unofficial GLBT server, if you're uncomfortable with that then you might want to find another server to play on." I don't consider that trying to force someone off the server or run them out, just a simple statement, like if someone on Virtue was annoyed by RP, they indeed would probably be better off finding another server to play on.

Either way, just from the tone and language used in the first post it seems like the OP and friend might be a little ignorant on the subject, like the fact that alot of us really dislike being called "The Gays", it's not a noun, it's a descriptor thank you very much. But that aside it just seems like the reaction you'd get if a couple drunk frat boys stumbled into a gay bar and then very quickly out. Victory is a painfully friendly server. In all my time playing there I've never had a bad encounter with another player, never had anything raunchy in broadcast, and generally just had a blast playing there. If there IS someone (or several someones) being rude and trying to run people off, they are in the minority and the general populace would be just as glad to be rid of them as anyone else. There's a reason people in general call it the GLBT server but most of us members call it the Family Server. We're all about friendship and tolerance.

Anywho, just had to get that out of my system. Now what's this about hipsters not knowing about the Hanky Code? Really?
I've spent most of my time on Victory, and found it to be a pretty decent place. Members of prominent LGBT groups like Rainbow Alpha Force and Q Patrol have always been good teammates, not rude or disruptive or impolite.

Victory as Prejudice server? Not in my experience!

    Awww! I'm blushing! Thank you.

Generally, someone will always be levelling faster than you. Unless you've decided that you have fun by levelling as fast as possible, and some do, then you should not worry about it.

I have a pretty vanilla motorcycle (pictured at left), and there sure is a bunch of bikes out there that can smoke me, but that doesn't prevent me from enjoying putt-putting around town at my own speed.
  22. ATI Vid Card driver dates.... For those with more knowledge... do they usually show wonky dates?

First thing, is are your ATI vid card drivers current?
  23. Nothing can stop you from making a claws/regen scrapper. Period.

However, using the name Wolverine, or some 733t version, or some variant in this game, even if the powers are very different from the classic Canucklehead, might get you genericed. You can talk copyright/trademark all you want, but one dissatisified customer is a lot cheaper than a battery of Marvel corporate lawyers/mutant sharkodiles taking a chunk out of the quarterly earnings.

Similar with costumes. Use at your own risk.
  24. Windows 7 AND City of Heroes with 1GB RAM? Seems low.

ATI 2400 card, although I'm not familiar with ATI cards, seems on the older side.

What other games are your specs sufficient for?

What is your free hard drive space?

CoH really is a system hog. Try disabling all non-essential systems and programs.

Post the results of CoH Helper, and HiJackThis to let the tech gurus have a better look at your system.
  25. Yes. If you have four completed sets, all the same set, you get all the bonuses from each.
