  1. Hm, timing might be difficult, but I'll give it a try. I've got a copy of my second toon, Pale Fallen Angel, on Virtue, but my first, Angel of Retribution, had that name taken(grumble grumble).

As to TSW, I'll definitely make that one; Jennifer "DreamingAngel" Shepard.

Just a question: what happens if there are enough people that we have multiple instances?
  2. I regret nothing!

Actually, that's not true. Some things I regret:

    - Not getting either of my toons to L50. Angel is 35 so it MIGHT be possible for her to hit 50 by the 30th, but I work full-time so probably not.
    - Never actually coming up with a Battle Cry for my Peacebringer, Pale Fallen Angel. Just couldn't figure out one that fit with her character, so she's the "strong silent" type I guess.
    - Never playing a Mastermind. Had I known then what I know now, when I bought the PB option I would have picked up MM as well; I just figured I'd either get it the next time it went on sale or when I filled out Tier 5, whicever came first. I was so gonna channel Overlord with it; the summons would have yelled out "For the master!" as they attacked. Ah, lost opportunities.
    - Being perhaps a touch too anti-social. I guess it's from being a 360 gamer; whenever I logged in, I would set "not looking for team" so I could concentrate on what I was doing. Ironic considering that I had like one bad experience, and that was a DFB my first week, when I had no clue what the hell I was doing.
  3. I have to agree with Cende, TSW is a pretty good game, but it seems like it could easily have been more like Diablo 3, where it's single-player with multiplayer option, instead of making it an MMO.

That being said, here's what I like:

    - Personally, I like the graphics, especially the environments. Cutscene animation for toons is a bit lacking, but that's a problem with most CGI.
    - I'm loving the story, even just at The Savage Coast.
    - I like the "anything-ness" of the leveling system.

    But what I don't like...

    - In a lot of places, mobs are packed so close together that you pretty much can't help drawing aggro from several just to get where you're going.
    - And speaking of aggro, out of all the MMOs I've played, it seems like the mobs in this one have the highest aggro and largest aggro range I've ever seen. They're like killer bees. If you get within fifteen feet of one, you're screwed, and you can't run away because getting hit puts you in 'combat' mode, where you can't Sprint.
    - You have to learn every single ability in a weapon tier to get to the next tier, but you can only use 14 total? WTF. And while I'm at it, who decided on a 1-tray, 7 ATK-power system? Compared to WoW, TOR, and most especially CoH(10 trays FTW), that is horribly limited.
    - The keybinding interface is...well, it's not 'bad', I think, it's just gonna take some getting used to. There are so many different things auto-bound to keys that are easy to press by accident that it feels odd.

  6. My favorite toons? Well, I only have three, so this is easy!

The first one I created, TheCommander

was a very sad Mass Effect FemShep knock-off, right down to her red on black was-supposed-to-be-Colossus X-but-in-reality-she-looked-like-an-Arachnos-agent armor. I also didn't work on the face at all, so she looks like quite an angry lady. Which...would fit in with her being an Arachnos agent, now that I think about it. She was a Magic/Blaster, and though I never did anything with her(I think she's still at L2), I did at least get her powers colored pretty much exactly like biotic powers. So there's that. And if nothing else, the time it took to create her proved to me that I could be a lot more original with the design.

My second toon, Angel of Retribution,

was originally going to be a Magic/Blaster as well, but I decided to go Magic/Scrapper/Longsword. I came up with what I thought was a nice story.

    Angel of Retribution

Amber Mitchell was a U.S. Government researcher doing advanced testing on relics found by Hero-turned-archaeologist Doc Delilah. As she was taking an ancient stone tablet to the mass spectrometry lab, an electrical storm blew out the lights of the research facility, causing Amber to stumble and fall in the sudden darkness. The tablet shattered and a nimbus of mystical energy enveloped her body. Stunned by what was happening, Amber heard a ghostly voice.

"Whilst I have slept the otherworlders have grown bold; but I am too weary to put matters right. My life now ends but my purpose endures, and your bloodline shall continue my legacy. Henceforth, you bear the power of Nemesis, goddess of retribution."

As the voice faded, Amber became aware of the power left behind in its wake. Reporting to her superiors, she was put through a battery of tests to confirm her new abilities and after being registered as a Hero, was sent to Paragon City for on the job training.
I spent literally days going over the costume, getting each piece to 'fit' with the others, trying color scheme after color scheme until it 'felt' right. She was also given an alternate costume with wings("Angel", remember) to use in boss battles(...I'm such a geek), hell, I even colored her longsword differently for that outfit(...I'm really a geek). This was the character that showed me how truly fun and different this game was. I can honestly, no-BS say that the time I've spent playing as her was some of the best I've had in over 25 years of playing games(I'm 35). Dropping out of the sky and busting out a Whirling Sword on a group of mooks never got old, nor did standing toe-to-toe with EB's and mashing their faces in. She was my first, and she'll always be my favorite, the one I ran around with, the one, when I was bored, that I'd simply fly around and explore an entire zone with.

My third character, Pale Fallen Angel,

was created on a lark. My best friend -- who was actually the one that got me into the game -- sent me an email about Peacebringers and Warshades being on sale, and I thought "Why not?" I immediately created her and reserved her name(got burned on that with AoR, which wasn't her first name choice, though I honestly can't remember what was), then just left her in Icon for a few days while I tried to figure out an outfit. But while I was doing that, I ended up writing a story for her, though the name comes form Hideyuki Kikuchi's eleventh Vampire Hunter D novel; it's not a 'by the book' PB name, but darn it, I wanted to use it.

    Quote:
    Pale Fallen Angel

As an FBSA agent, AnnaSophia Shepard knew about the Kheldians, but since they didn't work with her section, she rarely thought about them until she watched a Nictus attack kill her husband and infant son. As the devastated Anna cradled her child's body, she saw nearby a fatally injured Peacebringer who had attempted to stop the slaughter. Filled with grief and hatred, Anna impulsively offered to become the alien's new host. After the joining, she took the name Pale Fallen Angel and dedicated herself to wiping out the Nictus.

Even among other Peacebringers, she rapidly became considered particularly ruthless. When the FBSA questioned their former agent about her methods, they received a blunt response.

"The Nictus must be destroyed. I cannot compromise, I will show no mercy. To achieve this goal, there is no enemy I will not assist, no friend I will not stab in the back, no ally I will not betray. The end of the Nictus will justify my means."
Yeah, I'm a sucker for tragedy, sue me. I died more than my fair share of times while learning the difference between a Scrapper and a Peacebringer. Although I have to admit that hovering in mid-air over Nocturne, blasting her while she ran around raging impotently below me, made up for all the Void Hunters. For a time, she was my favorite, I think more because of the "newness" of getting used to a ranged powerset instead of melee, though I did get used to it enough that I can switch between her and AoR effortlessly. But she was the one who gave me the deepest emotional connection to the game, someone who'd had it all and then lost everything, with only revenge to hold onto. I even went back later and gave her a "business suit" FBSA outfit.

So there you have it: my three characters. In closing, what did they mean to me? TheCommander, almost nothing. AoR showed me how easy it was to immerse yourself in this game. And PFA demonstrated how effortlessly any story that the players could come up with would fit into this world. That, if this does end, will be the legacy of City of Heroes to me. A game that let you be anything you wanted, and yet still made you feel like you belonged.
  7. TwitchTv, Zwill says...

    - Cryptic wasn't responsible, there were "no evil machinations", Paragon had the engine license "in perpetuity"

    - SOE buyout is "not to my knowledge".

    - "Lots of reasons" why they can't confirm or deny whether NCSoft is even considering selling; NDA's mentioned.

    -
engine will not be released to public. "No. No."

    - They CAN run events if they want, it's a server code issue, like Halloween, Winter, etc.

    - Refunds for points, etc: "Anything you've heard is more than I've heard."

    - On the last day, they CANNOT blow up the world, because that would take code and devs which they "don't have anymore." But "We can maybe spawn a bunch of stuff. That would be interesting."

    - Zwill just spawned a bunch of walkers and a Lusca

This! That was actually part of the email I sent to Gabe Newell(who knows if he ever read any of them); I advised that many people would probably be willing to double the subscription fee, and floated the notion of a 20-30% price increase in the market.

Hey, I subscribed to FFXI for almost three years at $15/mo, and for literally a year of that, I logged in mayyybe twice a week. I will gladly pay $30 a month subscription if it will save the game. Hell, I'd consider it a bargain.

And the idea of crowdfunding? Works for me! I've got a bonus coming at work(in the range of several hundred $$), and I'd gladly sink it into this in lieu of putting it in the bank to earn 1% interest annually.

The major comparison I can make from ME3 and us(I saw no reason to quote the entire post), is how differently the community managers handled it. The devs have been all over the board here, Zwill most prominently. BioWare's CM, Chris Priestly...was an absolute ****ing jackass. I was there day one, and at one point when someone chided him for saying nothing of importance, he actually said "How would you like it if I didn't say anything?"

My jaw dropped. I couldn't believe someone in his position could get away with that, and there can be no greater contrast between that forum(along with the immediately-pre-ME3-release-rulechange-hey you can't make fun of the developers or we'll ban you from the forum and Origin announcement) and this one.

I've actually carried on a few Twit-conversations with Felicia, and I've been trying to get her attention about this, but in the wake of DragonCon, she's probably been flooded with messages. Anyone else in the halls of Geek Royalty we can manage to bring this to their attention; Gabe & Tycho from Penny Arcade, Scott from VGCats, Wil MF'in Wheaton, Rob from ToplessRobot, anybody. Send 'em an email, a Tweet, or a blog comment.
  9. Okay, here's the situation. My parents went away -- no, no, sorry. Tired.

I'm not gonna get my hopes up, but neither will I let them be crushed. And yes, I will be playing until literally the moment they yank the cords out of the servers.

The SOE thing, that does kinda worry/reassure me. Worry, because I'm not sure how much they had to do with the SWG mess. That might have been just something they tried on a lark: "Hey, everyone likes Jedis!" Reassures, because hey, it's Sony. They've got money to burn.

Now, if I had to restart my character...honestly, if the game stays around, I couldn't give a flying **** about having to restart my character. If all the costume options, power pools, etc. are there...does it really MATTER if you have to start from scratch? This is a 'choose your own adventure' game anyway, that just gives you a chance to go back and do it again. In fairness, part of this may be because ever since I got burned by Mass Effect 1(I didn't write down the 'map' I used to make my FemShep, ergo, I've never been able to get her exactly right again), I have always made a list of everything I do when I create a character, e.g., "Nose 3 clicks from the left, etc." So I have everything for my toons -- powers, Enhancements, hell, even my menu options -- written down. So for me, this isn't a problem. Who am I kidding, it wouldn't even be a consideration.

So I'll just say I don't have a problem with this. Short of one of us winning the lottery and waving a bag of money at Kim, 3rd-party intevention is pretty much our best bet. "We shall watch, and pray."
  10. Okay, I just re-sent my email. Jesus, that email form is finicky. Firefox and Opera didn't do it, I finally had to use IE.

Anyway, here's something I wanted to say: Since I'm not VIP(I was going to subscribe this month, but...well, yeah), I can't post on the Announcement forum. So if any of you would be kind enough to take this pic I made and spread it around, I would be grateful. It's a little maudlin, I know, but hey, whatever it takes, right?

*Note - ed. pic, you were right Quinch. Me so sorry!

  11. Sent. I think. That email interface is wonky.

    Mr. Newell;

As you are by this point hopefully aware, NCSoft Publishing terminated the employment of the 80+ members of Paragon Software, and is intending to shut down their long-running superhero MMORPG City of Heroes/City of Villains. I should also point out that NCSoft has a history of doing this, and that once they shut down an IP, they are not averse to using their legal department to stifle any fan-based attempt to continue that game, in one notorious case, threatening a fan group that was running servers for their canceled game Tabula Rasa, even though the group was actually operating at a significant monetary loss.

What I, and many others in the CoH community wish for would be, first and foremost, for NCSoft to reverse their decision; however, given the company's past actions, this would seem to be optimistic to the point of foolishness. Another possibility that has been raised is a fan campaign to raise sufficient funds that would allow a new company to be formed, purchase the IP, and perhaps hire some of the Paragon Software team to once again work on the game, but this is admittedly a longshot at best.

However, if someone of your position in the industry were to indicate interest in acquiring the IP, that might get NCSoft to listen to reason. You would of course be making a significant investment, but I daresay that could be alleviated by any number of means, such as fan donations via Kickstarter, reinstituting a subscription-only system, or even increasing prices of purchasable items by 10-20%.

The bottom line, sir, is that you would also be purchasing an IP with an extremely loyal fanbase, of which a notable portion have been with the game for its entire history, spending(with subscriptions) hundreds or thousands of dollars. We simply want the game to CONTINUE, and we are willing to do a great deal in the hopes of ensuring that it does.

I would finish this email by thanking you for the time you spent reading it, and humbly requesting that perhaps at the least, you could have someone in your company do a cost/benefit analysis on this scenario.

Again, thank you for your time,

    name
  12. I work nights, so Friday afternoon before I went to bed, the last CoH related thing I did was make vague plans with my friend to run Katie Hannon's TF sometime this month.

Then I get home this morning, check my email, and...he's written to me telling me about the game getting killed.
  13. Angel of Retribution

    To all of you...

I want to thank all of the Devs for this game. I've only been here since April, but already, it's some of the most fun I've had in my gaming career of 25+ years.

What can I say that hasn't been said? Thank you, this sucks, au revoir.
  14. Hm.

My main character, Angel of Retribution(Magic/Scrapper/Longsword), real name Amber Mitchell. She was a US government research technician working on artifacts that Doc Delilah found, but while taking an ancient stone tablet to be tested, the lights of her facility blew out and she fell, shattering the tablet. Turned out that the essence of Nemesis, the Greek goddess of retribution, had been trapped in the tablet, and she gifted Amber with her powers. Amber then got hired by M.A.G.I. as a full-time hero, and threw herself headlong into the work, with a particular emphasis on batlling the Circle of Thorns and the Banished Pantheon. So I think she'll head to Faultline and just hang out next to her old boss.

My second character, Pale Fallen Angel(Natural/Peacebringer), was an FBSA Special Agent named AnnaSophia Shepard. She had just gone back to work after her son was born, and then watched her husband and son both killed in a Nictus attack. There was also a Peacebringer there, fatally injured, and the grief-stricken AnnaSophia offered to become his new host. After that, she went on an anti-Nictus tear, and became regarded as particularly ruthless by her fellow PB's. A perfect way for her to go out would be in the middle of a battle against the Council, but of course there's almost no way to time that right. So instead, she'll head up to her 'perch', which is where I always go to log her out. I have no idea what the coordinates are, but it's a medium-height building just across from the statue of Atlas, with several air-conditioning units on the top. She goes up there, sits on the wall surrounding the roof, and looks down at Atlas Park.
  15. Where am I going? I have no *expletivedeleted* clue. My best friend since high school, who I don't get to see that often, started playing this game, and it was actually THIS GAME which got me to completely upgrade my obsolete, nearly ten-year old system, just so I could play this game. Which I was then able to do, and had an absolute, thrilling blast running around Paragon City.

    Since April.

I mean, come on, if this game could instill that kind of passion in a relative short-termer like me, what about ppl that have been here since day 1?!

This is an unbelieveable...um..."D move". I mean, there's so many ways it could have been handled differently! If you want to close the company down, fine, it's your company. Release a few months of "Things are going bad, we don't know how long we can keep going", so that you don't give ppl *expletivedeleted* heart attacks when they sign in to the forums!

Where am I going? Honestly, probably back to my 360. I'm mainly a console gamer anyway, but since I created my first character, Angel of Retribution(as said, in April), I have literally only turned on my 360 like five times. And one of those was to watch an episode of Doctor Who.

But MMO-wise? Most likely, nowhere. I'm trying TOR, but CoH has spoiled me on speed and jumping. And I liked the story better the first time they did it, back in KOTOR.

Played FFXI back in the day, until all my friends quit. And I was only L22 in it. I'm L32 now with AoR, and my Peacebringer, Pale Fallen Angel, is L23, but...I work full-time, and I do have a life. There's almost no way I can get them both to L50 by November. So I guess I'll just hang around and keep fighting the good fight until then.
  16. Couldn't find an answer anywhere, so here 'tis. Has Shadowstar's real name ever been revealed, other than some variant of "Mrs. Issan"?
  17. My main toon, Angel of Retribution, doesn't really have an origin that lends her to having arch-nemesisis...nemesises...nemisisi...whatever. But as she runs around, she tends to make an extra effort when it comes to the Banished Pantheon or the Circle of Thorns.

My alt, a Peacebringer called Pale Fallen Angel, was in-story an FBSA agent who saw her husband and infant son killed in a Nictus attack, then became the new host of a dying PB to take revenge on them. Nothing like a little tragedy to bring out the best in a character!
  18. Never mind, AVG had frotzed its update and somehow that was monkeying with CoH.
  19. So I just got done w/The Dark Host, and jumped into the TUNNEL to head back to Talos Island and put some stuff up at Wentworth's. Once I got there...the game froze, and the little 'report crash' window came up.

Reloaded and tried again, and after a few seconds, crash #2.

At this point I decided to switch characters, and logged in my 2nd character, who's in Atlas Park. No problem, so it's obviously not a video card/driver issue.

Tried a few more times to log in with the other, and it either crashes just as the load bar fills up, or crashes right as I can see TI, or lets me run around for a few seconds and then crashes.

I sent a Support ticket, how long is the typical wait for something like this? I'm on vacation this coming week, I'd hate to not be able to play.

I'm here to talk to people who have more to contribute than half-baked insults. I've dealt with your kind since 56.6 was cool. And sad to say, with only three weeks in I've also met a few of you in this game, which I had, probably foolishly, believed was different.

Just because you've been here 8 years doesn't make you better than anyone else, nor does it make you some kind of game god. More the better for us, I think.

Someone comes in, gives the canon description of where the Rogue Isles are, and you probably just clicked on the profile, saw a relatively short-time player, and decided to get your jollies. Despite your blustering, you had not covered that in this topic, so how was someone supposed to know? Not all of us can commit every factoid to memory, not all of us have the time to scroll through years-old thread archives that discuss where the Isles are. Not all of us, but apparently you.

I've seen this happen so many times -- on the FFXI boards, with Bungie.net, hell, even on the repressive BioWare forums. New player comes in, asks a question, gets attacked for being a "stupid noob". New player comes in, joins a conversation that looks interesting, and gets flamed for being a "stupid noob" and not knowing something. People give up playing games over things like this, they willingly forgo some tiny little bit of joy just so they won't have to deal with idiots like you.

Newsflash, jackass: just because you think you're all that doesn't mean you are. You're no better, and from the tone of your posts most likely a worse, person than most of the people on these forums. But I have to give you this; you're the one people remember. When they're deciding whether to try out a new game, go back to an old one, or join a new message board, you're the type of person who influences their decisions. A troll.

An ill-tempered, mean-spirited, sad, powerless little troll.
  22. *reads post*

    *checks CoH window*

    *hangs head in shame*

    Eugh...Of course.

Both times, I'd been on teams. I guess I never changed out of the Team channel. Grrr argh.

    *smacks self in head*
  23. I finally came up with a workable Battle Cry(fits character, under 32 chars.), enter it in the Battle Cry field on the I.D. Option...and instead of doing the Attack emote and yelling the cry, my character does the Attack emote and a message pops up in the window saying "You are not on a team!"

Uh, yes, as I am a solo player, I am aware I'm not on a team, thanks for sharing. So I delete, retype and retest the cry a few times (mindful of the definition of insanity), and the same thing happens each time. Finally, however, I try it once and it works. And I did nothing differently.

Then, however, I started messing around with my keybinds. Got to the point where it was such a hassle changing what I had to the new system that I'd mapped out on paper, I just Reset Keybinds and started over. Only realizing after the fact that of course, this also reset F10 and started it doing whatever wonky thing it was doing before, again.

So then I start delving in the bind specifics, and thanks to the talented ex_libris, I am finally able to come up with this sequence of events.

    - F10 for Battle Cry is not working properly: triggers Attack emote and window message saying "You are not on a team!".
    - Enter /bind F10 "nop" to strip bind.
    - Enter /bind F10 "local This was my battle cry! $$emote attack".
    - Test F10.
    - Success!

So is this a known issue, or did I somehow just find an odd glitch? I know from a buddy that's been playing for a while that he never had that issue.
  24. So...it's 12:35 EDST and nothing seems different.

Oh well. Time to level up some more!
  25. Angel of Retribution

    Mutant issue....

Two quotes have usually come to mind when thinking about X-people in the MU. First, from Twisted Toyfare Theatre

Cyclops: "Sorry we're late, everyone, but we were busy saving a world that fears and hates us. Then I had to send my son into the future --"
Beyonder: "Oh, shut up! Teenagers with cool superpowers, surrounded by hot chicks? I wish I had your problems!"

And more recently, from Mass Effect 3:

Joker: "Hey, I'm just tired of them"(meaning biotics) "stealing the spotlight from people with actual disabilities. I break ribs if I sneeze too hard. Being able to move crap with your mind is not a handicap."
