That's exactly right, except you stopped the train of thought a stop early - now assume that NCSoft came by for a milestone check on GW2 and looked at what they saw and realized that there was no way it was going to sell in any significant numbers.

Well, they'd have to kill GW2, wouldn't they? And at that point would it really be worth keeping GW1 around for a trickle of income? A trickle that would become even smaller after the inevitable losses in players when the news gets out that half the studio was laid off?

Maybe it would be reasonable to close down Arena.net entirely and call it a day?

(Obviously, this is an analogy, since the Arena.net/NCSoft relationship was different than Paragon/NCSoft).

Um.. yeah, I'm pretty sure ML isn't any more trustworthy than you or I. What if I made a thread talking about how Sony was in the final stages of talks to acquire CoH? Would that be trustworthy?

For those paying attention:

  • People from within Paragon Studios have claimed that CoH was indeed profitable and doing well
  • Numerous people have stated that they've been told (by a reliable inside source) that CoH was more profitable than what the NCSoft financial reports show
  • The people making these reports were not just GG and Mercedes Lackey
  • The 800k gross revenue figure that some people keep throwing around is an outsider's view from the only information they have (understandable to cling to that, since it is the only public source)
  • The people claiming that this, that or anything is true or untrue about the profits from CoH do not have the full information and have no right to claim knowledge on them, especially to the point to constantly badmouth someone that reported numbers they were told and certainly not to the point where they should be respected for claiming they know better than Brian Clayton or any other source.
  • Lastly, none of this should need be said.


Additionally... did anyone else ever play Pigskin Footbrawl?

I'm shocked that you guys are bothering to acknowledge Brillig and Another_Fan. The "proof" that they are unicorns is in the level of their argument. If they had something more relevant than "did not" and "I know you are but what am I," then they would be somehow worth notice.

Indeed. I only wanted to share those pictures, because I just found them and anyone else who used to play that game may have gotten a good smile from them like I did.

Then, I figured I'd just lay out my thoughts, since I was replied to.

Any replies I offer to the usual gang is not for them, but for anyone else who may not have followed the course of things.
It's like turning on a show or "news" and they're all talking about that thing that everyone already knows about... except for you, haha. Just figured I'd offer my recap of it.

A far more likely reason is that either he or Mercedes didn't understand what those numbers represented, or used the wrong term in referring to those numbers. In some of the posts from that search link AF posted, it's clear that the people were talking about sales, and mislabeled them as profits. I'm not surprised; even most businesspeople are not financially-minded, and will misuse or not fully understand financial and accounting terminology. It's happened on these boards too, and I generally didn't consider it important enough to correct.

Technically, one does not need to steal to be a thief, one need only take what does not belong to one's self. Largely, what I take I return to its rightful owner.
