I've already forgotten about most of you
Whoever runs RT cooks the books, as it were, massaging the fresh factor to come out the way they want it to. The most egregious example of that was Superman Returns. It had a solid "fresh" rating, but if you actually read the reviews you'd see they clearly should have been given the "rotten" icon. After that happened I looked at a couple other movies and the same pattern turned up.

Saw this on Cracked this morning:
George just got Star Wars WRONG somehow in the prequels. There were light sabers, there were droids and there were Jedi, but it wasn't Star Wars. When he made A New Hope, he was setting out to make a film drawing from all the old Westerns and sci-fi serials he loved as a kid. He didn't know what Star Wars was -- he just made it. When he made the prequels, however, he was actively trying to make what he thought a Star Wars movie was, and that is why he failed. Cody Johnston, Cracked.com, 11-2-12

The more recent movies were an unmitigated disaster. Disney taking over STAR WARS is fine by me. They got it out of George's hands and that is a good thing. He is a poor director. He had some amazing ideas and he should've had some assistance directing/scripting etc. Such horrid dialogue! Pod race for 10 mins +?! WTF?! JAR JAR!!! The horror...the horror...

And the shameless stealing of other people's work. I mean, "Commander Cody" homage is moderately amusing if you're 50 and recall the 1940s "Commando Cody" serials they ran on Sunday morning TV after Flash Gordon (or the band from the 70s), but you can't tell me Naboo isn't Dinotopia.
Ugh, not to mention the subtle racist things. I was not surprised people were upset with those films, especially Phantom Menace.

As you're watching those movies, you can actually see the sections that scream "video game level!" can't you? Pod race, the arena fight, the space battle, the giant poundy whatsits with molten metal....

EDIT: found this in a quick search....more later
Homing Beacon #76
The latest Homing Beacon has arrived, and today we get to talk about the Geonosian droid factory! A late addition to the postproduction of Episode II was the elaborate Geonosian droid factory set piece, which was conceived, scripted, previsualized and shot months after principal photography had wrapped. Visual Effects Supervisor Ben Snow and his unit tackled the eleventh hour action sequence.
"We used a combination of computer graphics and miniature work for the environment," says Snow. "Since everything in the factory is moving and interacting, we made a lot of it in computer graphics so we can deal with the complexity and the interaction."
The rust-hued smoke-belching clamor of the factory was a perfect showcase for the signature "used universe" feel of Star Wars. "To get a realistic grime and gritty feel, we enhanced our shots with CG and real smoke, sparks and pyrotechnical elements," says Snow. "To make the sequence tense and scary, we wanted to push for a realistic feel."
To that end, Snow took a crew of computer graphic artists and model-makers to a real automobile factory in the San Francisco Bay Area. "We looked at all these machines in action and try to get a good feel for it," he says. "One of the daunting things is just how much complexity there is in this real factory, and trying to reproduce that in computer graphics and visual effects is a bit overwhelming. But you're trying to convey an impression of it rather than having to get every bit of grime in there."
Even the car factory was judged too austere. "We decided we needed to take the team somewhere a bit nastier," says Snow. "We visited a foundry in the East Bay, and this was paydirt as far as I was concerned. Dark, and dirty, and old, I think it really defined the look we were going for. It had the texture and the sulfuric industrial smell that we wanted to try to evoke in our work. We took a bunch of photographs that we used as texture reference when painting our CG models and miniatures. It's really important to have good reference. It keeps us honest, particularly if we're doing a largely computer graphic scene."
The final factory environment was created using a combination of computer-generated elements and miniatures, with bluescreen plate photography of the actors properly aligned into the virtual surroundings. Helping add to the realism of the finished shots was a sense of purpose to the enveloping chaos. "In a lot of the shots the machines could just be whirling around threateningly, but I thought it would make the sequence more exciting to see that the machines were actually building things," says Snow. "One of the things I did was to sit down and try to work out what each conveyer belt was doing, and made little maps showing the manufacturing process for the animators and artists on the sequence."
Go Team Venture!
Wow, what a lot of work for an incredibly dull and pointless scene. Raise your hand if you thought either of the main characters were in any danger whatsoever.
It's like they watched Galaxy Quest, saw the Chompers sequence and went, "God, that's brilliant!" Completely missing the point of the joke. "Well, this episode was badly written!" Amen sister.

Wait. There were "subtle" racist things? Could you name a few? The ones I remember seemed blatantly obvious to me. I'm curious as to what I may have missed.

"Well, that's pretty clearly racist."
"What!?!?!? I didn't hear anyone use the N-word, nor are there white sheets, burning crosses or swastikas! It's clearly not racist! Also, calling someone racist is the worst thing you can call someone!"
So, yeah. By that standard, Lucas' racism in the prequel trilogy was subtle.
