If CoH does get shutdown, I need a new MMO...

Must be some kind of record.

No, I don't work for Ncsoft, have never worked for NCsoft, although I have helped out in the past with an NCsoft ran event, and also helped organize the past 3 EU CoX player meets (these 3 were organised by a player).

I have also ran a set of forums for Tabula Rasa in the past.

So, am I affiliated with NCsoft or not?

Don't feel bad, I may yet catch up to you.

Apparently, being rational, calm and even-tempered is a sign that you might be an NCSoft employee.

I'm not sure that was what the hysterical mob was going for, but oh well.

Ok this explains your bias then. Thanks for the honesty.

Side note: The last EU player meet for CoX was a week after the Closure Announcement, and to be fair NCSoft were about as much use as a chocolate fire guard in helping us. If anything, they were a waste of time (we initially started planning the event in February 2012, but didnt get everything finalised until August 2012... and that was after several months of waiting for NCsoft to get their fingers out of their rear ends and in the end say that they are unable to help out in any way shape or form).

Here is a list that I have contested (or clarfied) in the past few weeks from both sets of forums
  • The game was making $800,000 profit per month (have seen it quoted both here and on Titan Network forums).
  • Richard Garriotts resignation letter was forged (Both here and on Titan Network forums).
  • The game had 100,000 subscribers at the time of closure (comment on Toms Hardware, it was made by a CoX player)
  • That City of Heroes is the 1st game that NCsoft have voluntarily given refunds for (both over here and on Titan network forums)
  • That in the initial announcement the forums were due to be closed on September 1st (Titan network)
  • There are others if i can be *arsed* to drag them up from my post history.

*edit* Just to make sure you read this part: ALL OF THE STUFF I HAVE JUST LISTED IS INCORRECT. THERE IS NO EVIDENCE THERE TO SUPPORT THESE!

I have however tried to correct them when I initially read the posts.

So, am i biased? Or would I rather have substantiated evidence to help *you guys* make your choices.

Sure, it does appear that I am defending NCsoft, but that is because people are saying untrue things about NCsoft.

If someone says something untrue about City of Heroes, I will correct them (for better or for worse).

Hell, it doesn't actually matter what the subject matter is, as long as i can get the correct information (or enough preponderance of evidence to back up what I am going to say) then I will correct people.

If someone corrects me, I will try to see where they are coming from, but I will always ask for *their* evidence as well.

No one is *perfect*, but i try to make sure that what I am saying is correct (and I do always welcome corrections!).

Btw, Brillig is next up to be accused of working for NCsoft...

No a thousand times no. The game had gross sales of 2.5 million per quarter. That is before expenses. So if their monthly expenses were ZERO, they made 800,000 a month.

We have no idea what their expenses for the studio, for the GMs, for payment processing, for anything else was.

What is more important we have no idea what the character of the sales were or where they were going. Want to bet we hadn't fallen off that 2.5 million/quarter cliff ?

Read my post, I said that I had contested it (or corrected it). I was just listing the *original* facts, and not listing the corrected facts.

I actually started playing CO again, and I proved this statement to be FALSE when I came back. Not to offend you or something.

The game has improved drastically, even I who quit CO years ago for the same reason as yours.

Here is how I fixed the combat settings in CO:

1. Go to options.
2. Click Controls Tab. (Not Controller)
3. Find "Only Attack if Target Selected," and turn if OFF! Yes, OFF!
4. Recommend this to anyone who played or is playing CO who has not found out about this setting.

You can copy my setup. Ever since I found out about this settings, I've enjoyed CO and been my CoH substitute.

I asked one of the Veteran players in CO who is closed with the devs. He mentioned that it was suggested by many players to be used as default. But no responses. I figured, some sets like Celestial set cannot benefit from this settings. Because some of the powers are used to target self or heal self and not just for the purpose of attacking critters.

Many players have thanked me for this information. Please pass this along!

I played TERA for about a month. It's probably the best fantasy MMO I've played, but the BAM combat can be ridiculously tedious and/or difficult, numerous missions (particularly the instances) tend to be buggy, and they merged the server I chose specifically because it was low-population with a bunch of other servers. So I let my sub lapse after a month, but I had a character at level 55 and several in the 20-30 range. The combat was pretty good, though, and since my level 55 was a Priest I can say that the mechanics of healing aren't all that annoying - what's annoying is the amount of aggro it generates.

I think I'm going to try a few of the F2P MMO games such as Vindictus and Raiderz, before I decide whether to sub to Tera or not.

Excellent post! I grabbed three months of CO when the NCSoft announcement came down (I was in the CO beta and played for six months after launch, too). I won't be re-subbing after that, as the game still doesn't "grab" me, but I also take issue with the claim that the combat system is poor. For me, it's easily the best part of the game. Dynamic, with nice graphics, good "flow," and a nice pace and feel to it. I use a "target center of screen" set-up, with a reticule, as that comes closest to the actual real-time reticule (FPS-style) targeting I prefer in games.

So far, it seems like my new home is The Secret World. I'm really enjoying it, even though my current machine really struggles with playing it. When I can build a new gaming box, that will probably seal the deal. Of course, I'd been following that game's development for years, as it's setting and such are basically the game of my dreams.

TSW is nothing short of brilliantly written. The atmosphere is incredibly immersive and the focus on story succeeds because of this - truly good writing makes a story focus work (should be obvious, but so many games have story lines that read like really bad fanfic). Cutscenes are miles beyond any other MMO I've seen. The game's a dream for roleplayers, basically.

I'm not a huge fan of TSW's combat system, but I also realize a big part of that dissatisfaction lies in the stuttering and glitching that results from the game being a bit much for my machine. I doubt I'll ever love it (tab targeting, indifferent animations, long-ish activation times for some abilities...), but a faster framerate will make it a lot better.

Lots more to say about TSW...but this post is already well into tl;dr territory!

Does The Secret World have a trial? I'd like to give it a try. Also, is it possible to subscribe to the US servers? The subscription in the US is cheaper than UK.

Yes, I belive TSW has a three-day trial. There aren't separate EU/US servers, you're billed according to your billing address, I think.

Vindictus currently has a pretty nasty bug that makes it difficult to team outside of the 24 man raids. It's been around for a week or so now and I believe the community manager mentioned a fix is in the works. So just a heads up. Outside of that? Its a pretty great game if you like a challenge. (It gets *HARD* solo, but it is possible). Its 100% free to play in that you get access to all characters, content, and gear. And there is a lot of content to play through, I'm just shy of 350 hours into the game and at level 65 of 70 on a main and 53 of 70 on an alt.

For a F2P game its awful pretty too.

It does...and if you complete 30 missions in that time, you get two more days added on.

What the other two posters said about trial and billing. And TSW doesn't have "servers" as we know them. There are servers, but the only thing it affects is PvP and PvP effects. You can team cross-servers PvE, etc.

Off list: Fallen Earth, it's a FTP MMO that you can play through steam. Think of it as Fallout: The MMO.

The two MMOs I play other than COH are LotRO and RIFT. (Of the two, I like RIFT better, but LotRO is fun, too.) Personally, I would cheerfully throw some deserving soul down several flights of stairs if I could convince Trion to buy COH from NCsoft.

This is why I'm largely done with online games, at least ones where I can craft a world for myself and get super attached to. Planetside 2 is a blast, but if it gets shut down, I'm not going mourn heavily or anything.

Well, Fallen Earth is a no-go for me. I'm having a problem with the game not being able to find the correct graphics card. It's been a known issue since January this year, and nothing has been done about it yet. I'm glad it's a F2P, as I'm deleting it now.

Yeah, that was the thing with Fallen Earth: significant problems with the game just don't get fixed for months on end. It was a problem when the game was completely independent under Icarus (although not as bad), and it's worse under Gamers First (where the staff dedicated to the game is literally just a handful of people).

Just prior to selling to G1, the game was working well. The bug count was fairly low and the performance had gotten quite good. But after G1 bought the game, there was a need to migrate to G1's very different server architecture, and that migration wasn't done well at all. All the old perfomance issues (lag, rubberbanding, map geometry issues, and more) returned with a vengeance. At the time I unsubbed (played from Open Beta up to about a year or so into Live), the ongoing and unfixed performance issues had gotten to the point where they were ruining immersion and making playing the game a chore, not a joy.

And that's a damn shame. Second only to The Secret World, Fallen Earth was the most immersive MMO I've ever played. They just flat nailed the post-apocalypse vibe. In addition, the game had the best combat system I've ever played in an MMO, hands down. Just prior to the G1 change, when the game was at its performance peak, Icarus managed to grab what I consider the Holy Grail in MMO combat systems: a functional reticule (FPS/TPS) targeting system. Real targeting in an MMO, not tab-to-target and target lock...I was one happy Dollhouse, I'll tell ya. Now I've been forced back to traditional MMO combat systems...and I haz a sad.
