City of Steam

For 2 weeks - since black Friday - I have been grieving and moping and depressed at the thought of losing this beloved game.

In those 2 weeks I have been actively promoting our plight to many as well as engaging in the preservation activities. Also I have been looking for a replacement should our efforts come to naught.

I think I have found where I will be going. I have watched dozens of reviews and played 20 or so trials, none of which came close to CoH. Then I saw a review of City of Steam on mmohuts.com.

I was so impressed with the review that I joined CoS and purchased a beta key. It is the only game I have found to be the beginnings of a match to CoH. It is steam-punk based and appears to be unlike the generic tripe which is fantasy. The missions are instance based but hey, so is much of CoH.

If you haven't found a sanctuary yet maybe this is up your street.

Is City of Steam the MMO by former CoH players? I've lost track.

I have no idea. If it is then that could be why I like it. I would be interested to know if anybody could verify if it is by former CoH players. Or if it isn't and what actually is. Some of the lore reminded me a little of CoH but also of other, lesser games too.

I think it was. There was a forumite that was developing and designing a steam punk style of MMO/Online game. he/she is currently on Paragon Unleashed as Steampunkette and I think that's the handle that she/he was using here also.

Thank you for the name of this game....it sounds like you can both team and solo in it much like City Of Heroes, and the graphics are beautiful.

If that's them then they are porting over some of CoH's ideas. I participated in some of the earlier design discussions but I didn't follow up as a year or so went by.

Well I know that one of the devs for City of Steam does post over on Unleashed and Steampunkette is there as well so the simplest option would be to go and ask .

I've been meaning to take a look at it but haven't gotten around to it. TBH the fact that it's browser based has been putting me off, I've had bad experiences with browser based games in the past.

Ooh, that game looks fun! I may have to give it a go.

Devs are hoping CoS is going to be available for open beta in November. Perfect timing.

I got to play City of Steam every Alpha weekend they had and I have to say I quite enjoyed it. For a browser based game it is amazing. I highly recommend it to anyone.

I did several reviews after each weekend of the Alpha on OnRPG.com and will be getting another sneak peek at it before it goes into beta in November.

I will certainly be adding it to my long list of games.

Well, last night and tonight, I've watched some gameplay videos and read some game information and lore and commentaries; and I'm really interested to know if this sprung from the mind (partly at least) of one of our community members. It's really a very impressive looking game, even more so when you consider how rich and full-bodied it appears even in its alpha stage. In some of the city area fly-through videos, I got a strong sense of inherent personality and just, well, tender loving care that few MMOs come out of their generic boxes with these days. I'm also curious whether "City of Steam" was inspired by the name of our currently embattled game universe here. That would be a nice touch.

I'll definitely be giving this a more thorough look-see, after November at the very earliest. For now, I'm going to log into City of Heroes and play some missions.

I'm not a die-hard fan of all things steampunk, but the aesthetic does entertain me. Enough so that several of my characters in City of Heroes have steampunk alternates...even if I've never seen fit to graduate most of them from the editor to a costume or character slot, I spent quite a bit of time on making them for my own personal amusement; and a couple of my characters are known ICly to have visited steampunk-themed dimensions via Portal Corp.

Meh.... I looked it over via their website. To me it just looks like fantasy land set in the Steam Punk era.

I've asked my contact at City of Steam if anyone on the team plays City of Heroes but I imagine right now they're pretty busy and I won't get an answer anytime soon.

Also, don't dismiss the game because its browser based. Browser based games have come a long way. Check it out for yourself before you judge.

City of Steam is based on The New Epoch, a series of table-top RPG books written by David Lindsay.

What's impressed me most about City of Steam is the conceptualisation of the world itself - it's like D&D's Planes of Existence were introduced to Discworld by Jules Verne!
The history and backstory is not only clever and imaginative, but also chock full o'potential for future content and expansion.

City of Steam certainly gets my vote!
