Sorry Dude, it wasn't my phone number.

You see, I was sitting in Red Robin with my girlfriends and their children on our weekly lunch outing when three guys waltzed in and took the table just to the side of us.

I paid no mind, chatting with the girls, playing with the babies, and coaxing the 3 year old that calls me "Auntie" to eat her mac and cheese. I paid no mind, that is until a few key words jumped into my ears. Here's the partial conversation from my perspective:

"Did you hear about the accident in the news? about the ambulance that hit someone in an intersection?"
"Wow, some people just don't pay attention. How did they miss the sirens?"
".... best game ever..."
"... technically ambulances aren't legally supposed to run red lights, same as fire trucks. It's a 'courtesy' that drivers are encouraged to allow them the leeway"
"... just give it to the fans..."
"That's not what everyone is taught in driver's ed..."
"Missy, take a bite of your mac..."
"It's hot!"
"Is the li'l man hungry?"
"He ate already, but I'll give him some more..."
"... being in the industry ..."
"He finally tried some avocado and I think he was surprised by the texture, but then demanded more"
"Oh yeah, Missy loved avocado... still does"
"... Felicia Day... 'nuff said..."

(OMG my ears were burnin')

"I like avocado!"
"Do you like mac & cheese too?... take a bite!"
"Yes, you need to eat if you want to stay bigger than your brother"
"I have a feeling he's gonna outweigh her in a month!"
*snickers all around*
"... met some people... steampunk costumes... didn't realize.. a group here in town"

(ACK! must find a way to talk to these guys!!)

I sat there with my girlfriends, looking oh so white bread suburban housewife in my jeans and light blue and white striped tee shirt: cooing at the babies, coaxing the three year old to eat, and furiously trying to think of a way to communicate to the guys at the next table.

Obviously I couldn't just up and say "Oh hai, sorry for evesdropping, but I'm a gamer here in town, and I have a friend who is a costumer that specializes in steampunk and renaissance. Maybe we know some folks in common. Oh, and I assume you've heard the news about CoH? There are some petitions going around, it'd be great if you would toss your voice in by signing them."

No, no that would be waaaaay too awkward, right?

So instead, I whipped out my small notepad that I keep for such situations, and quickly scribbled down this brilliant message:
Vegas CoH Players
Impish Kat (forums)
@Bo'Tanika
and
@Rangle M. Down

Then I waited.

I watched surreptitiously as they received their bill. Two of them got up and wandered in the direction of the bathrooms, one headed out to the lobby. I kept glancing at the restroom hallway, and soon saw the reflection of one of the guys in the pictures hanging on the walls.

Quickly, I got up and went in the direction of the bathrooms... As I approached the man, a largish man in a tropical themed black button down shirt (not overdone, it was nice), with nice... ermm.. pale hair... I smiled brightly. Those of you who have seen my smile, you know what I mean... brightly, with a little glint... my "oh hai" smile. He smiled back, but ducked quickly to pass by. I grabbed his arm (dear lordy... that just sounds terrible, but that's what I did) to stop him mid stride, and handed him my little slip of paper.
"Oh, thank you!" he said in a rather surprised voice. And I kept going, glancing over my shoulder to see him reading it.

It didn't really hit me until later, when my dear hubby teased me about hitting on random gamer geeks, that he might have expected something else on that paper...

Oh dear... I am sorry dude, it wasn't my phone number.

We need a missed connections sub forum.

I am amused at the thought of the dude trying to plug your globals into working phone number.

Yes, Jack... perfect summation.

Believe me... I am very aware of the ridiculousness of the situation. I don't think I have ever felt more silly... which is why I had to share.
Sometimes ya just gotta laugh.

Oh my gosh that is epic! How red are you now dear? Being a clueless woman fighting for our game myself I'd have likely done the same for what little that's worth...and my hubby would have made fun of me too. =D

Aw man I've actually been craving food from there. Especially their fries.

And personally if I'd have gotten that message I'd be hoping the the global Rangle M. Down was her way of saying what she wanted to do to me, and not her boyfriend/hubbie's global.

Shame I couldn't watch that scene unfold at the restaurant.

There's nothing wrong with being outgoing, Impish. Makes life interesting. Plus, you probably seriously made that guy's day. Of course, since he was a gamer geek, you very well may get a tell online saying Hi! Hope he sends it to Rangle's global; that would be fun.

Impish, thanks for sharing.

I really needed something to lighten my spirits tonight.

Putting myself in that man's shoes, if an attractive redhead such as you grabbed my arm, smiled at me with that impish little smile of yours and slipped me a piece of paper, I'd be thinking it was either a hotel room number, time and cost/hour or a phone number.

I would, as usual, be disappointed that it was neither.

Although, I could see him taking the @Rangle M. Down as a hint of what was expected.

I seriously hope he messages you. And Rangle.

If the game spit out 20 dollar bills people would complain that they weren't sequentially numbered. If they were sequentially numbered people would complain that they weren't random enough.

I have actually done that exact thing before. I overhear people talking about a subject that I am familiar with and I will occasionally chime in with a few facts. Especially if they are wondering what is happening with something or other. Then, I wish them a pleasant day and go back to what I was doing. Usually, it's playing Sudoku on my phone...or reading a book on the kindle app on my phone. Nothing wrong with interrupting other people's conversations and providing helpful information. you never know, you might make new friends that way. Although, looks like you made a new friend your way too.

I was eventually amused by this. But I'm also glad that it took my brain a minute to get there.

Hey, I just met you

But here's my global
Save the city, maybe?

...Yeah, maybe this isn't that great of a protest song.

See, now THIS ^^ is what I was thinkin'... lol

Jack, those lyrics are quite clever... glad I could provide some inspiration.

Oh, I doubt it was them... unless they are really familiar with the Vegas suburbs, we were pretty far from the strip. I'm pretty sure they were locals. Thanks for the link.

And TT, I have struck up random conversations with folks before, but here's the thing... I was sitting there with my girlfriends who are not gamers in the least bit. They're not prudes by any means, but it was "our time" together, if that makes any sense.

The scary thought to me is, the steampunk costuming community is rather tight. I've been to a couple of their events, and counted maybe 50 actual costumers (maybe even less). I just can't help but wondering if I'm gonna spot them at one of those events in the future.

If it's any consolation, I'm pretty sure my first thought would've been "Hey! A CoH global name! I bet she overheard us talking!"

My first reaction when a strange woman approaches me out of nowhere is to immediately think, "Hey, she totally wants me... to get something off a high shelf for her."

Understandable. I'm sure your friends would have understood the interruption of the "our time" moment in order to help save Paragon City.
