I tried to try The Secret World Free trial.. but ... I can't find it.

I go to http://thesecretworld.com/news/sign_...hree_day_trial
and all I get is a news page... no way to sign up for it. Seems a lot of people are able to do it... but I'm not seeing any way to do it.

Your character does not have capped defense. Depending on your AT the cap is between 175% - 225%. Your defense is not teal in the combat window, it can go higher. STOP SAYING IT IS CAPPED! The correct term is Soft Cap.
I enjoy playing in Mids. I specialize in Melee Characters, other AT's usually bore me.

I had the same problem. Apparently the game is too "secret"

Also, I can't believe I haven't seen a single mention of Star Wars The Old Republic. I am kinda trying it, but I'm not really sure what to think so far. Would like to get others' opinions.

I like the Star Wars world overall, but the graphics in this one seem way outdated, considering how new it is. Also I don't seem to really like the melee lightsaber combat, which is probably not good in a Star Wars game

So far the only class I've enjoyed is the trooper, which plays exactly like a CoH blaster pretty much.

Anybody playing this or have played it before? Could it ever be a replacement for CoH?

Actually was coming back to CoX because I was getting bored of Star Wars. I am a fairly causal player but it was easy to get to max level (50). And (unlike CoX) altitis is hard to catch on SWOR.

That said, Bioware does a great job with personal story of your character. If you think of it less like an MMO and more like a great single player that other people happen to be playing at the same time, you won't be dissappointed.

I am also something of a PvP nut and I really like the system they set up (others might disagree). Never really got into CoX pvp though.

In the end, if want to be Darth Vader or zap people with force lightning (or whatever star wars fantasy you have) you will enjoy it.

I was going to try GW2, but screw that now. Will try Secret World next.

PLayed it when it first came out, stuck around for about 2 months and it became very BORING since my alts did exactly the same arcs to level. Well the exact same outside their own storyline. Since the awful announcement I have been playing on Beta just to see what "could have been."

I have also tried out about 4 different games (all the ones mentioned herein) and couldnt play more than 10 minutes. I will probably go back to SWTOR since it has been awhile and i may have forgotten the storylines. But after a couple months of that I think I am done with MMORPG's.

CoX was my first and by far my favorite and nothing else compares.

Will definetely check out The Secret World. I tried CO last weekend but I was motion sick within 10 minutes....the game engine doesn't work for me like CoH which I could play for 8+ hours nonstop with no worry of motion sickness.

To my knowledge, just registering with the site grants the option to download and play TSW for 3 days, and can be extended by 2 more days if you complete 30 missions.

Personally I really like the game, but it's not for everyone.

But in order to register, you have to have a serial number.... Circular Reasoning Works Because Circular Reasoning Works problem >.>

Just talked to their live chat. They no longer are offering a free trial. I'm not going to plop down $50 on a game that I doubt I will like.

Same here.

I don't want to be an elf, or a gnome or a fairy (not that's there's anything wrong with it). I want to be in the modern world (or post modern). However, I won't plunk down 50 bucks on a game I'm kinda 'meh' on.

(In full disclosure I didn't like CoH when I first played it...damage was too little....then again on an emp/energy def what did I expect? stuck with it, changed to an issue 0 AR/Dev blaster and loved it)

There's a campaign of their players going on on their forums right now to get the free trial back asap - their primary argument: CoX folk need somewhere to land

I too was disappointed to see the 3 day trial gone when I tried to get in on it.

Oh well that sucks. I was definitely going to try the free trial, but I don't know or understand enough about the game to spend $50 on it.

Guess I will try to stick with SWTOR and see how it goes.

ToR was a great playthrough the first time. I think I did just about every side quest they gave me along with the main story. The gameplay was nothing special really. Basically stand in place and channel a 3 second cast where you throw pebbles at people (I was a seer/sage) Any difficult encounter I pretty much solo'ed by letting my tank companion aggro and just funneling heals on him.

Team play pretty much meant "Stand there and cycle heal/cleanse on the team because no one ever heard of healing before" granted it was when the game first released and maybe every pug I played with wanted to be super leet jedi's who scrapper locked everything.

I left about the time I was stuck running the same daily missions (PvP and otherwise) to slowly build up decent end game gear. I stopped and asked "Why am I doing this an hour or so each day?" and didn't really have an answer that equated too "Fun"

Does anyone have a Buddy Code they could give out for The Secret World? I am interested, but not willing to pop down 50 bucks just yet.

Thanks for the input. Right now it's free until level 15. Can make as many toons as you want. So I will definitely give it a try. The Trooper feels powerful but is kind of bland. Basically just an AR blaster. I heard marauder is the most DPS, but I didn't enjoy it. I was thinking of trying a sorcerer.

Also, not sure if I ever mentioned this before, but I really enjoyed your posts in PvP. I think I wasn't doing PvP by then myself, but any time you posted, it was like I was posting, but just more eloquently I always seemed to agree with everything you said, which was not common on these forums. So yeah, you're cool.

I am going to juice the time left in CoH, while hoping to get it saved. I am signing every petition and everything that comes online.

In case this fails, I am really curious about The Secret World. I have been reading reviews and seing gameplay videos and really liked. I have seen it mentioned several times in this thread. Are th CoH people playing in any specific TSW server?

Long life to CoH!!!

For the most part I'll be here till the servers shut down for the last time.

After that I'll more then likely be on lotro, DDO, DCU (PS3), or Shin Megami Tensei: Imagine.

See ya around.

My opinion: A very unpolished game.

The storylines are the game's biggest strength, with the crafting system being a close second (you don't sit there chained to a forge; you send your companions out to do things in the background).

However...I find the combat system to be mostly boring, most of the side quests uncompelling, and worst of all it seems like nearly every single quest NPC gives you a version of "you go do my job for me while I sit here."

I have been a long-time subscriber and enjoyer of Dungeons & Dragons Online. The character creation is rather complex, so there's a steep learning curve but also solid customization options. Others in this thread have called it "instanced hell" and maybe I'm just getting stodgy in my old age, but I prefer instanced content over the games where I'm competing with every other player in the area for kills, quest items, loot, etc.

Guild Wars 2 has also been growing on me. It's non-instanced which put me off at first, but most of the issues with open-world settings have been addressed--such as everyone who attacks monster x gets full XP and loot when it dies, crafting nodes are per-player so nobody can grab your resources while you clear the aggro mobs in front of it, etc. Yeah, it's an NCSoft game, I know. I pre-purchased well before The Announcement.

Lord of the Rings Online is a solid choice as well.

I have tried DCUO and have no need or desire to do so again. The character customization (both cosmetic and ability-wise) is terribly limited, and, at least when I played, once you hit level 30 (the cap) you were forced to group to complete content.

I'm not sure I can give a fair review of Champions Online. As someone who loves the Hero System (tabletop Champions rules), I felt very deceived when trying Champions Online. They used the Champions world and characters (which I personally have no vested interest in) and made the gameplay the polar opposite of the essence of the Hero System. Namely, character customization. I appreciate the fact that a computer game can't be as flexible in this area as pen and paper, but nothing based on the Champions RPG should have archetypes or a rigid character path.

Another game that I've enjoyed fairly recently (within the last few years) is EverQuest 2. While it doesn't stand out in any particular way, it's actually a decent game. My theory is that they looked hard at EQ 1 and said, "What don't people like about this game?" and made appropriate changes.

I personally would love some non-fantasy options, but the gaming industry seems dead-set against that.

I'm very happy with Star Treck Online right now...

I'm absolutly not a Star Treck Fan, but this game is not bad at all. It's different and not such an Fantasy Crap you played over and over again (...and every game feels like it's the same you played before). Developed by Cryptic it has a nice character costumization too.

Yes, when City of Heroes is closing end of November then I can think about it to spent some money over there, but right now I'm absolutly happy with the free to play option. I take a look at The Secret World too, I hear a lot of nice things from this.

To bad I already bought Guild Wars 2 before this crash here, because some friends played this game too, but well... Right now I don't feel to play something from NC Soft and the game is not that burner everyone is talking about. Kill something here... and something there... and over there too... zzzZZZzzz...

It's hard. When you played so many years City of Heroes then you always miss some options in other games: The Community, the chat system, the Character Costumisation so many power sets and so on and so on... Champions Online is... not that what City of Heroes was. Let's say it not in such a hard way... DC Universe Online is not a bad game with a nice presentation, but soon you find out that only the Indoor Missions are really nice, the other missions are most time crap and everyone does his own thing and is speaking a single word because most of the players are hanging on the PS3...

It seems there is a CoH refugees community building up in The Secret World, under the Arcadia server. Look at this long and warm wellcoming thread:

I will prabably join those if CoH really shuts down, I am still hoping and fighting for a change.

I bought TSW yesterday and tried out some of the first things... wow it is hilarious to be such a newb again Controls and game-play are similar but just a little off so I"m feeling a lot like I did 7 years ago here. I was laughing about the tab-target in game last night - so used to being able to target anything that was close enough to render on screen; in TSW you see stuff before you're close enough to tab target (although you can mouse-target earlier). I kept hitting F to try to move into range...

The puzzle missions are very well done (and I understand the later ones are even trickier) with some actual thinking needed and a fully functional in-game web browser for people who don't enjoy the thinking so much. Apparently FunCom have even created a bunch of real-life web pages as part of some of their puzzles.

The atmosphere is fantastic... really creepy; first time in a loooong time that I"ve played with sound on. The combat is fantastic with most focus on boss fights and not so much on "trash". From the get-go you're able to fight 6-8 trash mobs and come out on top; bosses (EB's / AV's) can certainly put the hurt on you though. Big experience comes from the quest line (mission completes) and not so much from the kills, but you do get xp for kills too.

Costume fans will be disappointed with the character customization I suspect. Their characters are no where near as customizable as ours. All males are exactly the same size/shape; all females are exactly the same size/shape. They're still working on more clothes but the options are currently quite limited. The good thing is that your clothes are purely cosmetic like our costumes are.... your gear is a ring, an amulet, a belt and ??? something else for your head but it does not show on your avatar - so not everybody runs around in a blue tunic because that's the best jacket for your level.

Anyway, it is great fun for me at this point.

Likely going to buy it myself in a month or so, we're moving at the end of this month so no new purchases right now!
I had downloaded the game and was going to do the 3-day trial but it was gone before I got the chance. I will be keeping an eye out for it returning though as I really want to try it before shelling out the moolah.
I had read it was best to boost your talismans in the beginning rather than your damage and i'd heard the other pros/cons. As much as i'd like to believe there's a chance CoH will continue in some form i'm not going to invest too much hope in that chance as we all are aware of NCSoft's track record.

Great replies and ideas and I am leaning toward TSW as it looks unique.

The PLAN:

(1) Play CoX until Nov 30. Play my heart out. Do the stories I never did or haven't done in a long time. Solo AV's ITFs and spend every influence I have on ultimate toons.

(2) Dec and maybe Jan - Go Cold Turkey. No new games for a bit. Truth is I am going to be gone for three weeks on holidays anyway, so it won't be that much time away.

(3) Re-evaluate TSW and give it a whirl. I may do another game if something else is promising. I would really like to get on the ground floor and I think TSW is already about to drop "Issue 2".

Anyway, I have loved this game for almost 8 years now, and sadly, it is about to die. It has become a part of my life in a way I never expected, but like everything, existence is finite and everything eventually dies. (One day, even WoW will die). This being said, the denial stage of grieving is over. The bargaining is over and I moved onto acceptance. I salute the game, the devs and the players. I wish it could go on, but it's time to move on.

I will put in 2 cents-

Star wars TOR is offering a free play, to lvl 15. No time limit, no character limit. This allows you to make one of every class, go through the begining story for each class, and venture on into the rest of thegame just a bit. It is not like CoH, but, I found the change of pace to be a way to take my mind off of the **** situation here. it is very solo friendly(at least to lvl 15) and offers group only content too. Some of the negatives people listed here from playing at the games release(weak group stuff) appear to be addressed more recently. IMO, it is a solid game, but will not have the longevity CoH does(did) at all unless you are a PvP fanatic. Worth trying for free for sure though.

Option 2: Skyrim. Yeah its not an MMO. but they released some DLC expansions recently, and that game is awesome. When my interest in TOR fades, I will be playing Skyrim.

I am also going to try LOTRO. I was in early beta on that game. I stopped playing it in late beta when they changed it from a blended offensive(all types could solo and hold there own on dmg output) to an extreme triforce style because tank/mage/healer just was terrible out of place in tolkien. I was however very involved in the early beta stuff- In fact, (if they still are using it) the weopon crafting bit where you make your own legacy sword or whatever(I forget what they called it officially) was 100% my idea. I should probably go try the system out to see if they implemented it correctly or not at the least. The wording in the announcement they used when introduced with the Moria expansion was almost word for word from my beta post, but I guess that doesnt mean it got put into the game right. Now my interest is peaked.

Anyway, there is a life outside of CoH, it just isnt as long or fun. I really hope someone picks this title up and re-opens it.
