Small Request for some folks: Please stop blaming GW

I've actually seen a few people blaming City of Heroes' closure on the launch of GW2, which is really kind of sad and baffling since Guild Wars is developed by ArenaNet and is PUBLISHED by NCSoft.
Really, the sad truth is that Anet and its games are just as much at the mercy of NCSoft's 'keeping the books LOOKING good' as Paragon Studios has been.

Ah, ArenaNet is wholly owned by NCSoft since 2002. It's listed as an overseas subsidiary in their financial reports just like NCSoft's NA and EU divisions.

Don't believe me, then how about from the mouth of ArenaNet itself.

I understand that someone who enjoys GW2 doesn't want to see that game blamed for what happened here but at least check your facts first.

Well if the rumors are true and the engine still belonged to Cryptic and was just leased to NCSoft, that might explain a lot...

I couldn't agree more.

Yeah, Arenanet has good people and good games. Don't trash them for this.

I don't blame Guild Wars 2. I blame some executive who needed to make it look like they were doing something in the wake of a bad quarter, so they shut down an 'expendable' studio.

I will, however, have a hard time playing GW2 after this, and I will DEFINITELY not be buying anything NCsoft ever again. This is the FOURTH game I have been actively playing when they shut down, and I don't think I'll take that risk again.

Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me 4 or more times...

My understanding was that a significant part of the six million or so dollars NCSoft was under for Q2 was due to gratuitous marketing expenditures for Guild Wars 2. I don't blame the game, I blame NCSoft.

If I say anything negative specifically about Guild Wars, it's because I hated the series before any of this happened.

Then I am a complete *******, yes. *Laughs* My fault entirely. But it won't happen again. While I was fond of the other games, City of Heroes was something else entirely.

No that was Blade and Soul, a different MMO.

Does it suck as much as Guild Wars?

Ha!

It's funny - even if jumping doesn't serve any *real* purpose, it's just about the first thing I want to do when I log into a game for the first time.

When GW2 is curently having trouble with its servers, and NCSoft's CoH closure statement mentioning "refocusing publishing support", it's hard not to think that part of the reason that they may have decided to cut CoH is to help GW2.

Ditto. I also blame that WoW-ripoff for Tabula Rasa shutting down (which I'm still somewhat bitter about, even more so now).

(I liked TR)

An MMO closure is definitely not a joke, and I have no intention of making light of it. And it can be a tough and emotional thing for players to go through, speaking from personal experience. And I know that it's often much harder on the developers than on the publisher. However, I also know that it doesn't necessarily turn you into a sad, depressed sack of tears for the rest of your life. People can move past it, and heal.

Until I hear the real cause behind all of this, not just rumors, I'm assuming that NCSoft had a hand in this decision and I'll be acting accordingly. There is also a possibility that it is just Cryptic/Atari/Perfect World. I'll also be treating them to my no-buy, warn-others-away approach. If they want to salvage *any* goodwill from a person who spends a bunch on games, they'll tell us what really happened. Until such time, GW2 might as well have been made by EA.

Until we start holding companies accountable for decisions we don't like, they'll keep screwing us over. "But I like X game they make, even if they've done bad things before!" Just wait til they screw over that 1 game you do like. It'll happen. And if you keep spending with them just because of that 1 game? I hope it crashes and burns hard...right after you spend $100 on it.

NCSoft will be getting no more of my money and my GW2 purchase was halted the day of the announcement. I'm a loyal and very profitable customer. I hope to return to giving them all of my money, should CoH survive.

Actually I blame anyone still willing to pay NCSoft money after they fired us from our game. If you really care about COH and the community you'd cancel any active subs with any NCSoft game.

And if you don't, **** you.
