Yep, they can do that. Probably the easiest way is to look at the list of who's online now, and PM a redname. They usually respond pretty quickly.
I managed to get "Flavor of the Month" for my ice cream themed Stj/Ice stalker.

When GR launched my girlfriend made a dual pistols catgirl and managed to get the name "Tigger Happy" which surprised both of us.
So to add to the discussion, what names were taken that surprised you?
A good week (I think) after Freedom launched, I decided to roll a Beam/Time Corruptor. I got the name 'Beam Line' as my first choice immediately, which caused me a brief brain failure as I wasn't expecting to get it....

Similarly, "Sticks and Stones" was not available for my staff/stone brute, but "Stick and Stones" is more accurate anyway.

Lately...
Lemon Law - Water blaster.
Slightly less surprised - For Grape Justice. Also water. (Cold/Water defender. Which itself is just kind of fun to say. "I'm a Cold Water defender!")
Last night I wandered over to Justice, where I tend to make punny names for the Iron Eagles hardcore group, and created a big yellow bird named SesameStreet Justice.
(The name field is one space too short for "Sesame Street Justice.")
