Yes I have to brag a little but I just lead a late night Keyes trial... and at the end "Badge Earned" appears... well I got the avoids the green stuff badge. We weren't even trying So happy!

A group of monkeys with keyboards, given infinite time, will eventually reproduce the works of Shakespeare, if you can get them to stop joining PUG trials.

Congratulations on your badge and your good fortune!

Posted

Yeah was quite a nice surprise, I pretty much almost got all of the trial badges now. I just need the door smasher in keyes and the other badge where you let him heal up each time.

I have had similar luck (however it was broadcasted as an Avoids the Green stuff trial) but even more lucky, about halfway through the fight the obliteration beam would count down but wouldn't fire! We all thought that some jerk was in the corner failing the challenge, so you can imagine our surprise when we got that same badge earned title! But congratulations it's a great feeling to get one of the hardest badges in the game out of the way!

Haha, I had similar luck last night. I was running consecutive Magisterium trials on a PUG, we all wanted to finish it instead of farm so we could get goodies AND xp, and the first run went really well, we DPS'd the hell out of Tyrant and he went down VERY quickly, faster than I've ever seen in fact. The second round he went down even faster and I notice a badge notification. Cue the entire leauge just guffawing in amazement as we just earned The Hard Way and didn't even TRY. Made me feel pretty awesome.

Because I do.

Well, not really, but I'd -like- to hate you. Can we call it mild annoyance mixed with seething jealousy and call it even?

But no, seriously, grats!

What makes the Avoids badge hard to get is not that you have to avoid the green stuff as an individual player. I've run the Keyes trial probably close to 100 times now and I've only gotten stuck in the green stuff myself maybe a few times total. What makes the Avoids badge hard is that you have to hope that at least 11 or more other people have enough desire and/or common sense to avoid it at the same time. For that reason alone it's probably one of the most nerve-rackingly "team" oriented badges in the game.

I would obviously never try to claim that a PUG could not randomly get it when they weren't actively trying for it. But by the same token I never assume such a feat wasn't just a matter of pure dumb luck either.

Gratz!

Most times I've seen a successful ATGS is from a group that kept trying it again and again until they got it. Practice makes perfect.

And if a Trial is attempted by a player base often enough... practice makes perfect.

Someone was trying: the beam always targets a player and it never misses (short of an instance bug). So while the league might not have been trying, you probably got lucky and the beam kept targeting isolated players that individually decided to get out of the way.

There was one Keyes where I was targeted literally half the time. If the RNG was targeting players good at avoiding the patches, that was bad luck for them but good luck for everyone else.

When we were first attempting this on Triumph, I suggested (after a few failures) to the league leader that we just park everyone in the hospital and I and a few other players good at Oblit dodging would take out AM. We got it on the second or third try with five players.

I can't imagine the devs thought that anyone would use that tactic. I was a bit worried that players would not want to go along with that, but everyone gets the badge whether they are actually at risk of being targeted by Oblit or not, and it seemed most people would rather get it quickly in one go than be the one to accidentally fail it and have to go again.

We also were able to successfully use this exact tactic on Victory any number of times.

Heck, it seems like it's next to impossible to get the badge for the Vahz AV int he DfB trial on a pug, let alone ATGS. Nice work/luck, etc. Happy for your fortune..

I've been on a team that got Hard Way more or less by accident as well. I think part of that is the sheer level to which we've been forced to apply overkill when the lights were broken; now that's its fixed some teams just have everything ready to go.

Yes I am (and was at the time) aware of the "hide in the hospital" tactic. Ironically despite that being an obvious way to make that badge easier to get I've never once been in a league that actually used it for any of the Avoids badges I currently have on my main badgers. Perhaps I'm just a masochist at heart.

Besides (for the purposes of this thread) I would argue that any league disciplined enough to do the hospital trick for that badge probably couldn't be strictly called a pure PUG in the classical "totally random and zero organization" sense anyway.

Over half the league in Arcanaville's case was random people joining my league at that point.

Yeah, in fact I completed a Mag. trial run with only 13 people (the 13th person came when we were fighting Black Swan).

The 12 man (at first) league was having issues at first with the 3 AVs...in fact we finished off Chimera with like 5 seconds to spare heh.

Then Black Swan and got the 13th player (he was a tanker but the extra Lore pets were nice ) and I think we defeated BS with 3 or so minutes to go.

Tyrant?! Lulz, he went down in about 3 minutes.

And one of our 12 people (possibly 2, don't remember now) were lvl 50 (no lvl shifts but had the slots unlocked)....(s)he was an Emp./* defender so..*shrugs*

But grats to the OP!

If I'm at the end of a Keyes, and the leader allows me to AFK in hospital until it's finished, I know I'd love it. It's less discipline and more "laziness", and you can definitely expect laziness from a PUG.

If I'm correct, isn't the difference between threads and a component staying with your team anyway? Leader's happy, less work and I got something out of it...and a badge I suppose.

It started that way, and "die and stay in the hospital" is an instruction that's easy to communicate, easy to follow, and easy to see if anyone has failed to notice the instruction (the instruction was/is given before the final terminal in the final reactor is completed, so there's lots of time to ensure everyone hears and follows the instruction, even in a league where people have little to no experience with Keyes, trials, or even reading English).

If its an announced badge run, I don't think there exists a badge hunter worth the name that wouldn't trade a component for ten threads and an easy shot at ATGS.

If we assume it's a PUG, even if it's annouced as a badge run, you'll get people who don't care either way about the badge.

I'm one of them for starters. I think I hit 500 badges once by accident.
I won't join a badge run if getting the badge will prolong the trial to long, but it's always a pleasure to team with people who are concentrating on teamwork rather then people just mindlessly grinding. Some of the best and fastest runs I've had are from badge runs.

That being said, I'll usually find one of Snow Globe's posts on what needs to be done so I don't mess everyone up either.

I wouldn't give up 1 thread for a badge (Unless it had a title I fancied), and I could be the guy on any of the badge runs people here run

You'd only get one chance to do so on one of my badge leagues... ever.

I generally don't mind people like this, as long as they cooperate with the team.

You are better informed then than some other players I've dealt with during my time with this game.

Maybe, but I tend to limit my badge running to Triumph, and I generally know everyone in Triumph's badge community.

I've seen it happen through sheer stupidity lots and lots of times. But I would react poorly to someone I knew for a fact did it deliberately.

That's one of the reasons I don't volunteer to lead leagues. Anymore.
