Also turn antivirus off it might be blocking or slowing it down, you also need to open ports, these instructions can be found on the NCsoft website in the FAQ section.

Stage 4 is the largest part of the download - stage 1 is the costume/avatar creator, stage 2 is the tutorial, stage 3 is the starting zone, and stage 4 is the rest of the game.

Even with Stage 4 still downloading you can still start making your character, even enter the Tutorial and Atlas if you decide Hero or Mercy if you decide Villain.

Guys, thanks for the reception, I love talking to you here. I have another question, arrived at stage 4, and is more than 2G, I turn off the computer and continue later?
I'm not 100% sure but I think that you can stop there, turn off the computer, and start there next time you begin downloading.
With just Stage 3 you should be able to start playing however. It will download in the background as you play.
The Marvels - Welcome to CoH. Feel free to look me up in game if you ever want to team. You will notice some people being quite the Debbie Downer in this thread...my advice is to play the game yourself and judge it from there.
I have played for almost 8 years now...tried the other Hero MMOs..and well..they just do not compete with CoH in my opinion.
I am not sure what level of a premium player you are, but feel free to send me an in-game tell (@I Burnt The Toast) - and I will gladly show you around. FYI I play on the Freedom server.

I don't know if this helps but I know there used to be Brazilian SG's on Virtue. I stumbled across a few members because I have a couple of characters with Spanish names, and they thought I might be bilingual. (Sadly I'm not.)

Just to chime in, welcome to the City Marvels, in my personal experience (just about 3 years worth) the community is good, most well help if/when they can and will usually offer answers/advise when asked questions so don't stop asking if you need help on any other topic. But I think you'll find the game a fun experience.
Thanks to everyone that helped make me a welcomed part of the community, and for giving me over 3 years of some of the best gaming I've been able to take part in. May the next game bring many friendships and maybe reconnect to some old CoH friends.

Welcome to the game, Marvels! You picked a good one. It's a good game, great community, and has one of the best dev teams in existence. I've been playing for just about two years.
Virtue and Union are the unofficial RP servers. Freedom is the largest server (possibly after Virtue?). Justice is also full of awesome people. I've never played on any of the other servers, but no matter where you choose to create your character, you'll have a great community to help you out.
I'm going to echo the recommendation of Paragon Wiki, best resource for the game and has a few beginner guides to boot.
Quick tip for costume creation when you get into the game: Don't forget that you can UNCHECK "Costume Colors linked", below the color palette, to have more than two colors in your appearance.
