Well thank-you for the Trial Freebie Fridays, it was fun & I look forward to when it goes live! I can sort of understand the odd time since that was also closer to the EU friday time period & I would suggests just as something to consider. Maybe have it start say @ 12:01 AM Friday GMT & run till Friday 11:59 pm PST? This gives the players in EU (further ahead like Auz & NZ) as well as NA players a balanced time window so to speak.

Yes - I want one as a villain character - but I can't see that AT ever getting unlocked.

They're clearly Nemesis' super automatons - able to soak more damage than would one shot a maxed out Granite tank. Haven't you noticed that they also have a summon havoc power - the animation for it being to run around office blocks waving. Then there's the ones who pretend to be in trouble so we risk our lives to go in and show them the way out just to run back in once we get then to a door.

I'm just wondering if it is truly random or if it's a fudged random? Is it possible to get really expensive stuff, or is it all cheap stuff? Or a midling range with some extreme kickers, essentially a bell curve? I'm just curious. I noted that for the most part, the stuff that was showing up was stuff I would never actually pay hard cash for. Except the costume pieces. Those I pay hard cash for, and they are the most worthless item from a power level point of view. Except vanity pets.

Another question I had that is totally off topic here. Why did the devs make the vanity pets all the same slot summoning wise? Why not allow more than one? I had fun running around with three vanity pets at a time. I miss being able to do that.

It's not random at all. The producers and/or marketing guys choose one item and everyone gets the same thing. (Or they did back during the trial... Freebie Fridays is offline until further notice.)

It's whatever the people in charge decide on. The most expensive thing that was put up for free was worth 100 points.

It was choking the servers. Pets are very resource-intensive for servers to process (which is why Masterminds were chosen to be a premium AT). Players with a ton of pets could intentionally slow down or crash players with poor connections, or could feasibly group together and crash an entire map.

Thanks for the reply. It was a point of curiosity, not something that I was ticked off about. Anyway, too bad about the pets crashing things. That's a bummer. As for being an exploit, well, good for them shutting it down. I may miss having multiple vanity pets, but anything that prevents what the griefers do makes me happy.

Hmm...now that I think about it, I'm not sure that they'd be able to do a randomized draw for each person. Wouldn't that fall under gambling or lottery laws?

Seems unlikely, since there are no tickets sold, or entry requirements.

I seem to recall some giveaways (where some can win a big item and others get nothing or the equivalent of a pack of tissues) are restricted from some locales due to various criteria that it falls under, like needing some form of 'skill' to enter. Since everyone was getting the same item, it doesn't really qualify as a contest.

Just because there is no purchase doesn't mean it isn't a lottery. If they're giving away randomized things of 'value', then some people would most likely get nothing, while some get things like a powerset. It could very well be deemed a lottery of sorts (especially if someone keeps getting nothing of worth).

Just something worth considering. *shrug*

Unfortunately, you are most likely right. However, I feel that if everyone got the same item, that would take out the gambling aspect. Also, you might have to consider the game fee to be the cost of the ticket. Some would.

I hate it when reality intrudes on my fantasy roleplaying, even if this isn't a real roleplaying game, LOL. Eventually, I'm sure somebody in government is going to try to regulate MMORPGs, try to tax them, or whatever. It's inevitiable. I just hope it takes a long time coming. (I don't include the netnanny laws, those are not really regulating games, I'm more concerned about time spent online, content, and social restrictions).

If it were a problem then the super packs would be subject to it and they seem not have a problem with it yet, but then maybe no one has reported them to the appropriate people. The problem with random is the same as with the packs and every other random thing, someone get 'uber shiny thing #1' and someone else gets an insp, or an enh they cant use. Far better to give everyone the same thing, and save those problems. Computers can't do true random anyway, they always get stuck in strings. One of the reasons electronic "dice" were not allowed in tournaments.

Except that isn't really 'gambling' any more than a kid buying a pack of CCG cards is, which is functionally what happens. Sometimes you get the holo card and sometimes all you really get is the gum.

You assume they'll EVER give away something equivalent to 800 Paragon Points. If they did decide to offer a random choice of, say, 10 possible items, they'd probably make all of them of equal monetary value (like 40PP). Then nobody's getting anything of higher value than anyone else.

But this is a moot point unless they actually start randomizing the Freebie Friday offers, and is even MORE moot since we don't know for sure that Freebie Fridays will be coming back.

Except the kid buying the pack of magic cards, at least get the cards. Even a card you have 6 or more of, has value, if one gets destroyed, or lost, or traded. AND as a card collector, you have the option to trade for the card you want, or buy it outright from a shop, and this doesn't have that option. (and frankly the buying of random cards is just as much gambling as playing the slots, its just not as bad, because you will always get cards). IF this was like a real collector card game, and it's not even close, and all I wanted were these 12 cards from the whole set, I would just wait and buy those cards, and not waste my money for a chance at 'winning' the one I want from a random 'drawing'. (But then that's comparing to the stuper packs, not the freebie friday, I liked the way it worked before, just of 75% of the items, only liked the hat myself, but its free and I don't have to claim them)

More specifically all laws regarding gambling that I'm aware of require the prizes to have specific and explicit monetary value. As none of the virtual goods sold for City of Heroes has sanctioned monetary value and as selling them outside the game is forbidden by the EULA, legally there is no money involved, so there is no gambling happening in the legal sense.

Incidentally, within this context what you pay for an item is not legally its worth. What its worth legally in this context is what you can sell it for. So just because the items in the store cost points, which cost money, doesn't mean legally that can be used to state their monetary value.

Interesting how this string was warped out of the original discussion by my questions.

Back on topic, I do hope Freebie Fridays return, and I hope people enjoy the offerings. I know I did, even the ones I didn't think I would actually want, but got anyway.

I do as well. While a dual insp isn't all THAT great, getting it for free is ok with me. I'll take it, I'll even use it, and then I'll move on.

The Princess Hat was really nice. I like free costume pieces, though I doubt I'll ever use that particular one, At least I have it.

If they are asking what I would LIKE to see in Freebie Fridays:

More costume pieces. Mostly ones that don't fit into a themed pack, so they are "Extra"
5 packs of inspirations. Give out a 5 pack of medium regular, dual, and/or team inspirations.
XP Boosters: The 1 hour 50% kind.
Temp Powers: Give out charges of St. Louis Slammersm, St. Gabriels Hammers, or Revolvers. Maybe even Holy Shotgun shells, War Wolf Whistles, Summon Tsoo Sorcerers or the dreaded Iron Blade.
Enhancements if possible (SO's, level is the same as the level of the claiming character +3)
Possibly a "one off" IO. Example: Paragon Brawler (can be slotted in Brawl only, +Accuracy/Chance for Stun) or Take That (Universal Damage, +Damage, increases accuracy of all powers by 2%)

Just some thoughts.
